LGTM — small, pattern-matching fix with solid subprocess coverage.
What was reviewed:
markAsHandled()on the internal promise in bothPendingbranches mirrors the adjacentRejectedbranches and the require(esm) path inZigGlobalObject.cpp; the flag is checked before the rejection tracker fires, so setting it on a still-pending promise is sufficient.- The already-rejected short-circuit in
handleVirtualModuleResultreuses the sameRELEASE_AND_RETURN(scope, reject(...))shape as the existingOnLoadResultTypeErrorarm; checked that theallowPromise=falseinstantiation (viafetchESMSourceCodeSync) now throws immediately instead of returning a pending promise where source code was expected — an improvement, not a regression. - Tests cover pending→reject, pending→invalid-resolve, already-rejected (plugin-handled and unhandled), and confirm
import()still rejects with the original reason;stderr === ""asserts no unhandled-rejection banner.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR touches src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp (9 lines across three sites) and adds two subprocess tests to test/js/bun/plugin/plugins.test.ts. It fixes an unhandled-rejection leak when require() is called on a Bun.plugin virtual module whose module() callback returns a promise: the loader chains the plugin's promise to an internal PendingVirtualModuleResult promise, then throws synchronously, orphaning the internal promise. When it later rejects, the process reports an unhandled rejection and exits 1.
Security risks
None. The change adds markAsHandled() calls on internal promises that are unobservable by user code, and short-circuits an already-rejected user promise to surface its rejection reason directly instead of chaining. No new inputs are parsed, no allocations, no pointer lifetime changes.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate — this is JSC bindings code in the module loader, but the change is purely additive in the Pending branches (marking a promise handled cannot break anything that worked before) and the already-rejected short-circuit follows the exact shape of the existing OnLoadResultTypeError case one arm above it. I traced all three call sites of handleVirtualModuleResult (fetchCommonJSModule with allowPromise=true, fetchESMSourceCode<true>, fetchESMSourceCode<false>, and jsFunctionOnLoadObjectResultResolve with allowPromise=false) and each handles the new eager-rejected return correctly — the sync path now throws immediately instead of returning a pending JSPromise where a JSSourceCode was expected, which was already broken.
Other factors
All prior bot feedback has been addressed: the comment-cop paragraph comments were trimmed to single lines in c8ff906, and CodeRabbit's request to strengthen the stderr assertions to toBe("") was applied in the same commit. The evidence block shows the two new tests fail on the debug ASAN build without the fix and pass with it. The tests use it.concurrent, spawn with bunEnv, drain stdout/stderr/exited concurrently, and assert exact output — consistent with the harness conventions in this file. The markAsHandled() pattern matches existing usage in ZigGlobalObject.cpp:825 and NodeVMModule.cpp:207.

LGTM — narrow fix that silences orphaned internal promises in the require()-of-async-virtual-module error path.
What was reviewed:
- The two
markAsHandled()additions infetchCommonJSModule's Pending branches mirror the existing require(esm) Pending handling at ZigGlobalObject.cpp:850 and the adjacent Rejected branches — pure flag set, no control-flow change. - The already-rejected fast path in
handleVirtualModuleResultreuses the samereject()shape asOnLoadResultTypeError; traced through bothallowPromiseinstantiations (fetchCommonJSModule → Rejected case marks handled and throws; fetchESMSourceCode → returns rejected promise to loader). - Checked that
status()/result()/markAsHandled()are non-throwing so no exception check is needed between them. - Tests are hermetic subprocess spawns, drain pipes concurrently, and assert exact stdout + empty stderr + exit 0; cover late-reject, late-resolve-to-invalid, already-rejected (handled/unhandled), and
import()still rejecting with the original reason.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR touches src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp (+9 lines across three sites) and adds two subprocess tests to test/js/bun/plugin/plugins.test.ts (+77 lines). It fixes a leak where require() of a Bun.plugin virtual module returning a promise would throw synchronously (correct) but leave the internal PendingVirtualModuleResult promise orphaned; when the plugin's promise later settled by rejecting, that orphan surfaced as an unhandled rejection and killed the process with exit 1.
Security risks
None. This is error-path plumbing in the plugin virtual-module loader — no parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto/permissions, no new user-controlled data flowing anywhere. The only observable change is that a previously-unhandled internal rejection is now marked handled (matching the caller's already-delivered synchronous throw), and an already-rejected plugin promise now surfaces its real reason instead of the generic "async module" message.
Level of scrutiny
Medium. ModuleLoader.cpp is a critical path, but the diff is confined to error/edge branches that were previously broken:
- The two Pending-branch
markAsHandled()calls are additive only — the very next line still throws the same TypeError. They match the identical pattern already used inZigGlobalObject.cpp:850for the require(esm) Pending case, and the sibling Rejected branches in the same switches. - The new Rejected early-return in
handleVirtualModuleResultshort-circuits beforeperformPromiseThenchains the plugin's promise. It uses the sameRELEASE_AND_RETURN(scope, reject(...))shape as the existingOnLoadResultTypeErrorarm two cases up. I traced both template instantiations: for<true>callers the returnedrejectedInternalPromisehits the caller's Rejected switch arm (which marks it handled and throws), and for<false>(jsFunctionOnLoadObjectResultResolve) the thrown exception is caught and rejects the pending module's promise.status(),result(), andmarkAsHandled()read/write internal fields and cannot throw, so no intermediate exception check is needed.
The already-fulfilled case is untouched (still falls through to performPromiseThen), so the documented "require() async module … unsupported" behavior for genuinely-pending promises is preserved — the second test's import() case confirms the ESM path still rejects with the plugin's reason.
Other factors
- No CODEOWNERS for the touched paths.
- All prior bot feedback (comment-cop on long comments, coderabbit on strict stderr assertions) is resolved; comments are now single-line and both tests assert
expect(stderr).toBe(""). - Tests follow harness conventions:
bunExe()/bunEnv,it.concurrent, concurrent pipe drain, exact-stdout snapshot, exit-code asserted last. They cover both twin sites (isBunTest and non-isBunTest branches share the same shape) via the require() path plus theimport()path for the new Rejected fast path. - The bug-hunting pass found nothing.

What was reviewed
- The two
markAsHandled()calls in the Pending branches mirror the adjacent Rejected branches and the identicalrequire(esm)Pending path atZigGlobalObject.cpp:814. - The already-rejected short-circuit in
handleVirtualModuleResultreuses the existingreject()lambda exactly asOnLoadResultTypeErrordoes; traced both<true>(CJS/ESM fetch) and<false>(jsFunctionOnLoadObjectResultResolve) instantiations — behavior is unchanged for pending/fulfilled plugin promises. status()/result()/markAsHandled()are all non-throwing;RELEASE_AND_RETURNplacement matches sibling arms so exception-scope discipline holds.- Tests drain pipes concurrently, assert exact stdout + empty stderr under
bunEnv, and cover late-reject, late-resolve-to-invalid, pre-rejected (handled/unhandled), and theimport()path.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Fixes an unhandled-rejection leak when require() is called on a Bun.plugin virtual module whose module() callback returns a promise. Three small additions to src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp (9 lines total): a 4-line already-rejected short-circuit in handleVirtualModuleResult's OnLoadResultTypePromise arm, and a one-line promise->markAsHandled() in each of the two Pending branches of fetchCommonJSModule. Two new subprocess tests (77 lines) in test/js/bun/plugin/plugins.test.ts.
Security risks
None. This only affects whether an internal loader promise is flagged as handled before require() throws its documented synchronous error, and whether an already-rejected plugin promise's reason is surfaced directly vs. lost behind a generic message. No new inputs are parsed, no allocation/lifetime changes, no user-controllable data reaches new code paths.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-medium. The change is in module-loading C++ but is mechanically identical to established patterns:
markAsHandled()on a pending internal promise before throwing synchronously is exactly what therequire(esm)path already does atZigGlobalObject.cpp:814, and what the adjacentRejectedarms in the same switch do.- The already-rejected short-circuit uses the same
reject(...)lambda andRELEASE_AND_RETURN(scope, ...)shape as the neighboringOnLoadResultTypeErrorcase. markAsHandled()is idempotent and only suppresses the unhandled-rejection reporter; it cannot cause a promise to be observed differently by user code, since the internal promise was never exposed.
I traced the effect on all callers of handleVirtualModuleResult: fetchCommonJSModule (both isBunTest branches, <true>) now sees Rejected instead of Pending for pre-rejected plugin promises and throws the real reason via its existing Rejected arm; fetchESMSourceCode<true> returns a rejected promise one microtask earlier with the same reason (test confirms import() still rejects correctly); fetchESMSourceCode<false> and jsFunctionOnLoadObjectResultResolve (<false>) throw synchronously, which their callers already handle via scope.exception(). Fulfilled and genuinely-pending plugin promises are untouched.
Other factors
- The PR evidence shows both tests fail on the base commit (rc 1, unhandled-rejection banner) and pass with the fix on debug+ASAN and release.
- All prior review feedback (comment-cop on long comments, coderabbit on strict
stderrassertions andsetImmediatesentinels) was addressed and the threads resolved. - Tests follow harness conventions:
it.concurrent, await using, concurrent pipe drain, exact-output assertions, bunEnv, exit code asserted last. - No CODEOWNERS entry covers these paths.

…ait for a plugin's promise require() of a module whose build.module() or onLoad callback returns a promise throws the "async module ... is unsupported" TypeError. The loader had already chained the plugin's promise to an internal promise, and require() dropped that one. When the plugin's promise rejected later, or resolved to a shape the loader rejects, the internal promise rejected with no handler: an unhandled rejection and exit code 1 after the caller had caught the error. bun 1.3.13 exits with code 0. The rejection tracker stopped skipping loader promises in #29393. require() now marks that promise handled before it throws. It also throws the reason of a plugin promise that is already rejected, where it threw the "async module" TypeError before. import() is unchanged.

I re-reviewed after d0f7ef3 and found no bugs; the commit addresses the three points from my earlier pass (the Handle operation now runs on the plugin's rejected promise, the bun test branch of fetchCommonJSModule is now exercised, and the async-module message is asserted verbatim). A maintainer look is still worthwhile because the description leaves open a behavior choice this PR decides: a plugin promise that rejects after require() already threw is now silent rather than reported.
What was reviewed:
markRejectionAsHandledat ModuleLoader.cpp:74:Bun__handleHandledPromiseonly enqueues a task, so no user JS runs under it and no exception check is needed after the call.- The new Rejected short-circuit at ModuleLoader.cpp:458 is gated on
commonJSModule, which only the twofetchCommonJSModulecall sites pass, soimport()and theallowPromise=falseinstantiation keep the existing chain. - Both Pending arms (isBunTest and !isBunTest) carry the same
markAsHandled(), and thedescribe.each(["bun", "bun test"])matrix covers both.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds about 20 lines to src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp: a helper that runs the rejection tracker's Handle step, an early return in handleVirtualModuleResult for an already-rejected plugin promise on the require() path, and markAsHandled() on the orphaned internal promise in both Pending arms of fetchCommonJSModule, plus subprocess tests in plugins.test.ts and one in mock-module.test.ts. It touches no security-sensitive surface (no auth, crypto, or untrusted parsing); the sensitive part is promise-rejection bookkeeping in the module loader. Approve was not chosen because the PR author explicitly asks a maintainer whether a late rejection after require() threw should be silent or reported, which is a product decision this diff settles one way, and because the loader is core runtime code without an existing human review on the thread. The latest commit visibly addressed all three of my prior inline comments, so acknowledging that progress is new information.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I re-reviewed the latest two commits and found no bugs; the three points from my earlier review (Handle-step on the plugin's promise, bun test coverage, exact error-message assertions) are addressed by the current diff. Because this changes user-visible require() semantics for an already-rejected plugin promise and the description leaves a design question open for a maintainer (whether a late rejection after require() threw should stay silent), a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
markRejectionAsHandled:promiseRejectionTracker(Handle)only enqueues arejectionHandledtask (Bun__handleHandledPromise), so no user JS runs beforeRELEASE_AND_RETURN(scope, reject(...)); the internal promise it returns is marked handled before notification in the existing Rejected arm, andhandleRejectedPromisesskips handled promises.- The
commonJSModule &&gate: only the twofetchCommonJSModulecall sites passtarget; the ESM/import()sites and the resolve thenable still take theperformPromiseThenchain, soimport()of a rejected plugin promise is unchanged. - Both sync/async
Pendingarms get the samemarkAsHandled(), and the new tests run every scenario under bothbunandbun test, so each copy is exercised.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the CommonJS virtual-module path in src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp (a new helper, an early return in handleVirtualModuleResult for already-rejected plugin promises when a JSCommonJSModule is present, and markAsHandled in both Pending arms of fetchCommonJSModule) plus subprocess tests in two test files. It touches no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface; the sensitive part is promise rejection tracking, where the only side effect is an enqueued event-loop task rather than synchronous user JS. It is not covered by CODEOWNERS, but it alters observable require() behavior (reason thrown instead of the TypeError) and the author explicitly asks a maintainer to decide whether late rejections should be silent, so a human should weigh that rather than an automated approval; a coderabbitai inline thread from the latest push also appears unresolved.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline nit, I also checked that the new early return in handleVirtualModuleResult is reached only via fetchCommonJSModule (the ESM <false> instantiation at src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp:1340 passes no commonJSModule) and that its rejected internal promise lands in the existing Rejected arm, so import() is unaffected. The latest push covers the points from my earlier inline comments (tracker Handle step, bun test coverage of the second switch block, exact message assertions); whether require() of an already-rejected plugin promise should throw the plugin's reason rather than the TypeError is the maintainer call the description asks for.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds an early rejected-promise path and two markAsHandled calls in src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp plus subprocess tests; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Not approved because it changes user-visible require() behavior in the module loader and the author explicitly leaves a design question open for a maintainer.

| if (i % 2) reject(new Error("late failure " + i)); | ||
| else resolve({ loader: "object", exports: 7 }); |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
🟡 nit (optional): the "resolve" half of this scenario never exercises a late fulfilment, so maintainers get no coverage of the resolve path the test name promises. exports: 7 is not an object, so handleOnLoadObjectResult at src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp:162 turns every even call into the TypeError '"object" loader must return an "exports" object' and all 12 late settlements reject the internal promise. Fix: resolve with a valid result, e.g. { loader: "object", exports: { n: i } }, so the even calls reach promise->resolve at ModuleLoader.cpp:1350 while the odd calls still cover the rejection.
Why this was flagged
The fixture at test/js/bun/plugin/plugins.test.ts:383-385 settles the 12 pending plugin promises: odd ones with reject(), even ones with resolve({ loader: "object", exports: 7 }). The late resolve runs jsFunctionOnLoadObjectResultResolve (src/jsc/bindings/ModuleLoader.cpp:1318), which calls handleVirtualModuleResult with wasModuleMock false, so the object goes through handleOnLoadResultNotPromise to handleOnLoadObjectResult (ModuleLoader.cpp:141). There exportsValue 7 fails isObject() at ModuleLoader.cpp:156 and the result is OnLoadResultTypeError, so ModuleLoader.cpp:1345 rejects the internal promise with the caught TypeError. Thus every late settlement, resolve or reject, ends as a rejection of the internal promise that the new markAsHandled at ModuleLoader.cpp:714 and :785 silences; the fulfilment branch at ModuleLoader.cpp:1350 is never reached. The test still fails on the base branch and passes with the fix, so the fix is covered; what is missing is the behaviour the title claims for a promise that later fulfils validly. No runtime defect; a test-coverage nit.
Verification: nit. The even-indexed late settlements at test/js/bun/plugin/plugins.test.ts:383-385 (resolve({ loader: "object", exports: 7 })) never fulfil the internal promise. exportsValue.isObject() at ModuleLoader.cpp:156 is false, and :162 throws "object" loader must return an "exports" object. So every even call rejects the internal promise; promise->resolve at :1350 is never exercised.
