WalkthroughChangesThe Unix socket URL formatter now separates Unix and abstract protocols, distinguishes host-like and path portions, and applies slot-aware percent encoding. HTTP and HTTPS formatting remains explicit. Tests cover Windows paths, relative and absolute paths, special characters, abstract sockets, and object coercion. Unix socket URL handling

All prior findings have been addressed and I found no new issues. Deferring to a maintainer because this tightens user-facing Bun.serve behavior — unix: "" and non-string unix values now throw where they previously fell through to TCP or coerced — and there is stated overlap with #28342 on the URL-encoding hunk that may want coordinating.
What was reviewed:
URLFormatter::fmtpercent-encoding for unix/abstract paths — only caller isget_url_as_stringinsrc/runtime/server/mod.rs; abstract keeps its trailing/sofetch.unix.test.tsstill matches.unixtype gate — now string orUint8Arrayonly, bytes read viaas_array_buffer().byte_slice();arg.get()already mapsundefined→Noneso the inneris_undefined_or_null()coversnull.- Updated tests replace the old TCP-fallthrough / coercion assertions with throw assertions rather than deleting coverage.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Two coupled changes to Bun.serve: (1) ServerConfig::from_js now validates the unix option instead of ToString-coercing it — undefined/null are absent, string/Uint8Array must be non-empty, everything else throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE; (2) URLFormatter percent-encodes unix/abstract socket paths so server.url never fails the WHATWG parser. Tests in bun-serve-args.test.ts, serve-listen.test.ts, and server-url-invalid.test.ts are updated to assert the new behavior.
Security risks
None introduced. If anything this is a hardening: unix: "" previously fell through to a TCP listener on the default port, which is a surprising public bind; it now throws.
Level of scrutiny
Medium-high. Bun.serve is production-critical and this is a user-visible behavior change: previously-accepted inputs (unix: "", unix: 42, unix: {toString(){...}}) now throw. The change is defensible as a bugfix, but whether to break the coercion path (and whether the empty-string case should throw vs. warn vs. keep the old fallthrough) is an API decision a maintainer should sign off on. There is also acknowledged overlap with #28342 (percent-encoding, currently conflicting with main) and #32287 (the WTFStringImpl leak this PR removes as a side effect).
Other factors
Three prior bot review rounds were addressed in follow-up commits: the abstract-socket trailing / was restored, the type gate was narrowed from is_array_buffer_like() to exactly Uint8Array with raw-byte reads, the hex_byte_upper canonical helper is used, and the author intentionally kept the error message as "string" (Uint8Array acceptance is undocumented back-compat). I confirmed URLFormatter with URLProto::{Unix,Abstract} is only constructed by server/mod.rs::get_url_as_string, so no other consumer is affected by the encoding change. Test coverage is thorough (empty string, empty Buffer, ten non-string variants, Uint8Array raw-bytes, undefined/null absent, special-char paths, relative path with space) and the old coercion tests were converted to throw assertions rather than removed.

No bugs found this pass — the earlier findings (abstract trailing /, over-broad is_array_buffer_like gate, hex2_upper alias, tmpdirSync) are all addressed. Deferring to a human because this changes user-facing Bun.serve validation semantics (unix: "" and non-string values now throw where they previously bound a socket or fell through to TCP) and overlaps with #28342 / #32287, so a maintainer should decide which lands and confirm the breaking change is intended.
What was reviewed:
URLFormatterpercent-encoding: unreserved set +/for unix,/encoded for abstract (authority position), trailing/for abstract preserved —fetch.unix.test.ts:64will still pass.ServerConfigunix gate: string viato_slice,Uint8Arrayviaas_array_buffer().byte_slice()(detached → empty → throws non-empty error), everything elseERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE;has_hostnameconflict check preserved.- Test updates: removed the
unix: ""/unix: Buffer.from("")→ TCP permutations that this PR intentionally breaks; new coverage for each rejected type.

Overview
Two focused native changes plus test updates:
src/bun_core/fmt.rs—URLFormatter::fmtgains a dedicatedUnix | Abstractbranch that percent-encodes the socket path (RFC 3986 unreserved +/for unix;/is encoded for abstract since the name sits in the authority) and appends a trailing/for abstract to preserve the pre-existing output shape asserted byfetch.unix.test.ts.src/runtime/server/ServerConfig.rs— theunixoption is now read viaarg.get()and type-checked directly instead ofget_stringish's ToString coercion:undefined/null= absent, string viato_slice,Uint8Array(coversBuffer) viaas_array_buffer().byte_slice(), anything else throwsERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. Empty path throws instead of silently falling through to a TCP listener.- Tests: new
unix option validationdescribe block inbun-serve-args.test.ts(empty string, empty Buffer, 10 rejected types, Uint8Array raw-bytes read,undefined/nullas absent, special-char paths, relative path with space);serve-listen.test.tscomputes the expected unix URL via the same encoding rule instead of the old Windows-specificC:split;server-url-invalid.test.tsupdated to expect construction-time rejection ofunix: Bunand a parseable URL for[weird name].sock.
Security risks
None introduced. The change is net-positive on the security axis: unix: "" previously fell through to binding a public TCP listener on port 3000 when the caller thought they'd asked for a local unix socket — that footgun is now a construction-time error. Percent-encoding is output-only formatting and does not touch the bind path.
Level of scrutiny
Medium-high. Bun.serve is core public API and this is a behavior change: inputs that previously succeeded (unix: "", unix: 42, unix: {toString(){…}}) now throw. The change is well-justified (each of those was a footgun) and the .d.ts type has always been unix?: string, but a maintainer should sign off on the breaking-change aspect and on how this coordinates with the two overlapping open PRs (#28342 does a more nuanced authority-vs-path encode set; #32287 fixes the same WTFStringImpl leak this PR eliminates as a side effect).
Other factors
- All four prior review rounds' findings are resolved (abstract trailing
/restored in 4c415f3; type gate narrowed toUint8Array+ raw-byte read in 4c415f3;hex_byte_upperin ec0eacf;tempDirin 7959988). The one intentionally-declined nit (error message says"string"not"string or Uint8Array") has a stated rationale (Uint8Array is undocumented back-compat). - Test coverage is thorough for the validation matrix; the URL-encoding tests are
skipIf(isWindows)which is appropriate since AF_UNIX path semantics differ there. - The
serve-listen.test.tschange replaces a hard-coded WindowsC:split with a computed encoding — this now runs the same expectation on all platforms, which is a small robustness win but also means Windows CI is the only place that exercises the%3Acase for the drive colon.

I reviewed this PR and the earlier findings have all been addressed; nothing new turned up on the current revision. Because it changes user-facing Bun.serve behavior (unix: "" and non-string unix now throw instead of falling through to TCP / coercing) and overlaps with #28342, a maintainer should sign off on the behavior change and PR coordination.
What was reviewed:
URLFormatterpercent-encoding: unreserved set +/for unix paths,/encoded and trailing/kept for abstract —fetch.unix.test.tsshape preserved.unixtype gate: string viato_slice,Uint8Arrayviaas_array_buffer().byte_slice()(raw bytes, not ToString); everything else rejected before any coercion runs.- Test updates: dead toString-trap tests removed, new
tempDircall sites useusing,serve-listen.test.tscomputes the expected URL with the same encoding rule.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR touches src/bun_core/fmt.rs (URLFormatter::fmt for unix/abstract sockets), src/runtime/server/ServerConfig.rs (the unix option read in ServerConfig::from_js), a one-token visibility change in src/jsc/JSGlobalObject.rs (throw_invalid_property_type back to pub), and three test files. It fixes #40182 (server.url throws for socket paths with URL-hostile bytes) and closes the "non-string unix coerces to a garbage socket path" bug class.
Security risks
None introduced. The change is arguably a hardening: unix: "" previously fell through to binding TCP *:3000 publicly; now it throws. Percent-encoding is output-only formatting for server.url and does not touch the bind path itself.
Level of scrutiny
Medium-high. The code changes are small and well-tested, but this is a deliberate behavior change on a core public API — values that Bun.serve previously accepted (empty string, numbers, objects with toString) now throw. The author explicitly flagged this for maintainer review ("Ready for maintainer review on the behavior change"), and the PR description notes overlap with #28342 (which uses a different escape-set split for authority vs path) and #32287. Whether to break unix: "" → TCP fallback, and whether to defer the URLFormatter hunk to #28342, are maintainer calls.
Other factors
All seven prior review comments (two blocking, five nits) are resolved in the current diff: the abstract-socket trailing / is restored, the type gate is narrowed to Uint8Array with raw-byte extraction, hex_byte_upper replaces the compat alias, new tests use tempDir with using, the redundant toString-trap tests are removed, and ZBox is written unqualified. CI on build 105010 was green except for a known main-flake in require-cache.test.ts. Given the explicit request for maintainer sign-off on the behavior change and the open-PR overlap, deferring rather than approving.

unix option and percent-encode unix socket paths in server.urlURLFormatter wrote the raw socket path after "unix://". A relative path
or a Windows drive path landed in the URL host slot, so
Bun.serve({ unix: "C:\\test" }).url threw TypeError: Invalid URL, and a
"#" or "?" in any path truncated the URL.
The formatter now percent-encodes the bytes the WHATWG parser rejects,
strips, or reads as a delimiter, per slot: the first segment of a
relative path is the host, the rest is the path. "%" is encoded too, so
decodeURIComponent returns the original path. Bytes the parser accepts
stay as-is, so a URL that parsed before serializes the same.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
I reviewed this revision and the bug hunting system found no issues. My earlier concern (title/description mismatched the descoped diff) has been addressed — the PR now accurately describes only the percent-encoding fix.
Deferring to a maintainer because this is a user-visible server.url output change: serve-listen.test.ts on Windows now expects hostname "C%3A" instead of "C", and the per-slot minimal-encoding approach supersedes two other PRs (#28342, #40307) that took different shapes — worth a human confirming this is the encoding they want to ship.
What was reviewed:
URLFormatterUnix/Abstract branches and the newPercentEncoded/needs_percent_encodinghelper — sole caller isget_url_as_stringinsrc/runtime/server/mod.rs; http/https branches are unchanged.- Checked the CodeRabbit dot-segment concern: not a regression — the raw path was written before too, so
/../normalized identically pre-PR. - Verified
hex_byte_upperandstrings::index_of_char_usizeexist; abstract-socket trailing/preserved; no CODEOWNERS on the touched files.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR touches one Rust source file (src/bun_core/fmt.rs, ~65 net lines) and three test files. It rewrites the URLProto::Unix and URLProto::Abstract arms of URLFormatter::fmt to percent-encode socket-path bytes per URL slot (host vs path), so server.url never throws TypeError: Invalid URL for paths with characters the WHATWG parser rejects (Windows drive letters, backslashes, spaces, #, ?, etc.). A new private PercentEncoded Display helper and needs_percent_encoding predicate hold the byte table. The only runtime caller of this code path is Server::get_url_as_string in src/runtime/server/mod.rs:514. The earlier validation half (ServerConfig.rs, JSGlobalObject.rs) was intentionally dropped per the author's 2026-08-24 note, and the description now records that.
Security risks
None identified. This is display-string formatting for an informational property (server.url); the socket bind itself uses the raw path via config.address, and server.address still returns it unchanged. No parsing of untrusted input, no memory management, no auth/crypto.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate. It is small and self-contained, but it is a user-visible API-surface change: the observable value of server.url.hostname on Windows changes from "C" (lossy — the colon was dropped) to "C%3A", and serve-listen.test.ts was updated to pin the new value. The PR description states this supersedes #28342 (host-only encoding for abstract sockets) and #40307 (Windows-only backslash→slash) — three approaches to the same problem is a signal that a maintainer should confirm the chosen design (per-slot minimal encoding, roundtrippable via decodeURIComponent(hostname + pathname)).
Other factors
- All prior review threads (my nits, my 🔴 description-mismatch, CodeRabbit's error-message and dot-segment comments, the comment-cop long-comment flags) are resolved. The dot-segment normalization CodeRabbit raised is not a regression: before this PR the raw path was written and the parser normalized
/../identically; this PR does not change that. - Test coverage is good: the #40182 drive-letter case runs on all platforms, a per-byte encoding table on POSIX asserts exact
hrefand roundtrip, an abstract-socket test on Linux, andserver-url-invalid.test.tsflips fromtoThrow()to asserting the encoded href. - No CODEOWNERS cover the touched files.
- Given I have already left three review comments that shaped this PR (tempDir nit, ZBox nit, description mismatch), a fresh maintainer eye on the final shape is appropriate rather than an auto-approval.

Problem
Bun.serve({ unix: "C:\\test" }).urlthrowsTypeError: Invalid URLon Windows (Bun.Server.url can return invalid url in windows #40182).URLFormatter(src/bun_core/fmt.rs:1137) writes the raw socket path afterunix://.
