Problem

  • export 1FOO succeeds silently and inserts 1FOO= into the export env. bash prints export: `1FOO': not a valid identifier and exits 1.
  • The Rust port of the builtin (src/runtime/shell/builtin/export.rs) dropped the is_valid_var_name check that the Zig reference runs on the no-= arm (export.zig:89-93). The None arm fell through to (s, &b""[..]) and inserted the name unchecked.

Fix

  • Validate the name with bun_shell_parser::is_valid_var_name for every argument: a bare NAME and the part before = in NAME=value. The function was pub(crate), so it is now pub and re-exported through bun_shell_parser and crate::shell.
  • Follow bash, not the Zig reference, on the error path. Each invalid name gets one diagnostic line, the loop continues so later assignments still apply, and the builtin exits 1 when any name was rejected. The Zig code returned after the first bad name and exited 0, which REVIEW.md forbids (exit nonzero after an error).
  • The error report goes through the shared Builtin::write_failing_error, with a new WaitingWriteErr state so the queued stderr path also reports exit 1. This is the same idiom cp.rs uses. The empty name (export "") is no longer skipped and gets the same diagnostic.
  • Verified: test/js/bun/shell/bunshell.test.ts, five new cases in the env variables block. Four fail on the system bun (empty stderr, exit 0) and pass with this change. The full bunshell.test.ts and pipeline_stack.test.ts suites pass (492 tests). Also ran test/internal/source-lints/byte-search.test.ts.

Background

  • export is a shell builtin in src/runtime/shell/builtin/. Each builtin is a small state machine: start runs the command, and when output must go through the async IOWriter it sets a Waiting* state and finishes in on_io_writer_chunk.
  • stderr.needs_io() is Some when stderr is a real fd (redirect or inherit) and None when the shell captures it into a buffer. Both paths must produce the same bytes and exit code.
  • is_valid_var_name accepts [A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*. The parser already uses it for FOO=bar assignments at statement level.
Notes

Repro:

const { $ } = require("bun");
const r = await $`export 1FOO`.nothrow();
console.log(r.exitCode, JSON.stringify(r.stderr.toString()));

Before: 0 "". After: 1 "export: `1FOO`: not a valid identifier\n".

bash reference for the multi-arg case:

$ bash -c 'export A=1 2B C=3; echo "rc=$? A=$A C=$C"'
bash: line 1: export: `2B': not a valid identifier
rc=1 A=1 C=3

Bun's shell does not expand $?, so the multi-arg test checks the exit status through ||.

Walkthrough

The export builtin now validates all arguments with is_valid_var_name. Invalid identifiers produce accumulated stderr diagnostics and status 1. Valid arguments continue processing. The validation function is publicly re-exported, and shell tests cover these cases.

Reproduced with:

USE_SYSTEM_BUN=1 bun test test/js/bun/shell/bunshell.test.ts -t 'env variables'

Four of the new cases fail on the system bun (empty stderr, exit 0) and pass with bun bd test.

CI on c00aa6f (build 107407): every lane passes except test/js/web/url/url.test.ts on darwin 14 x64 (TypeError: Invalid URL for a Unicode 16 IDNA host). That test is red with the same error on main builds 107291 and 107413, and this PR does not touch URL or ICU code. It is reported separately. The diff is ready for review.

Superseded by #40710. That change validates both export 1abc and export a-b=5, reports every rejected word, keeps the valid ones, and exits 1 like bash.

The Rust port of the export builtin dropped the is_valid_var_name check
on the no-'=' arm, so 'export 1FOO' silently inserted 1FOO= into the
export env instead of writing the 'not a valid identifier' diagnostic
to stderr. Restore the check to match the Zig reference behavior.

Beyond the inline findings, I verified the latest push fixes the two blockers from the earlier review: the loop now accumulates errors and continues (so export A=1 2B C=3 exports A and C), the invalid-identifier path exits 1 on both the sync and WaitingWriteErr async completions, and the doubled export: export: prefix is gone — the diagnostic is now formatted once via writeln! with a single Kind::Export.as_str() prefix.

Extended reasoning...

Confirmed the three previously-raised issues are addressed in commit 8dab31a: the early return became continue with an accumulated error buffer, Builtin::done now carries exit 1 (with a WaitingWriteErr state so the async on_io_writer_chunk completion also exits 1), and the error string is built with a single prefix. The new multi-arg test exercises both invalid-then-valid ordering and the non-zero exit via ||. The remaining inline comments cover items not previously raised.

Validate assignment names before insertion.

Line 33 validates s only when eq.is_none(). Therefore, export 1FOO=5, export a-b=5, and export =5 bypass is_valid_var_name, insert invalid keys into export_env, and return status 0. Extract the name before = and validate it for both bare arguments and assignments.

LGTM — all earlier feedback has been addressed.

What was reviewed:

  • Confirmed the loop now buffers errors and continues, so valid assignments after an invalid one still land in export_env; both the NAME and NAME=value arms validate name, and the removed is_empty() guard lets "" fall through to is_valid_var_name (which returns false on empty per parse.rs:3829).
  • Checked the error path: single export: prefix via Kind::Export.as_str(), routed through the shared Builtin::write_failing_error, and WaitingWriteErr preserves exit 1 in on_io_writer_done on the async stderr path.
  • Verified bstr::BStr::new and index_of_char_usize match the module's existing conventions and the byte-search lint; the five new TestBuilder cases cover each concern raised in earlier rounds.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR makes the Bun shell's export builtin reject invalid variable identifiers, matching bash. is_valid_var_name is widened from pub(crate) to pub and re-exported through bun_shell_parser and crate::shell; export.rs now splits each argument on =, validates the name portion, buffers a bash-style diagnostic for each invalid name while continuing to apply valid assignments, and finishes via Builtin::write_failing_error with exit 1 (with a new WaitingWriteErr state so the async stderr completion also reports exit 1). Five new TestBuilder cases in bunshell.test.ts cover the single-invalid, multi-invalid-mixed-with-valid, empty-string, NAME=value-form, and bare-valid-identifier cases.

Security risks

None. This is input validation in a shell builtin — it tightens behavior (rejecting names that were previously silently accepted) and does not touch auth, crypto, filesystem, or network paths. The error message echoes the argument via bstr::BStr, which is the same display idiom used throughout the shell module.

Level of scrutiny

Moderate, and it has already received it: this is the fourth review pass. Earlier rounds flagged a doubled export: prefix, the NAME=value arm bypassing validation, early-return dropping later arguments, exit code 0 after printing an error, hand-rolled needs_io branching instead of the shared helper, and the empty-string special case — every one of those is fixed in the current diff, and each has a corresponding test assertion. The remaining change is ~30 net lines in one builtin plus visibility widening on an existing pure function.

Other factors

No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed paths. No outstanding CHANGES_REQUESTED reviews; the coderabbitai inline threads were resolved by a non-author. The implementation follows local conventions (bstr::BStr::new is used across 15 files in src/runtime/shell/; use std::io::Write as _; writeln! mirrors cmd_write_failing_error in Builtin.rs; bun_core::strings::index_of_char_usize satisfies the byte-search lint). Tests were added to the existing bunshell.test.ts per test/CLAUDE.md, assert stderr before exit code, and the multi-arg case verifies both the || branch and that valid vars were exported.

Closing in favor of #40710. Both PRs are the same fix for the same bug: the export builtin now checks each name with is_valid_var_name, prints export: `NAME`: not a valid identifier per bad word, keeps the valid words, and exits 1.

#40710 also skips a leading -- and runs its tests through the real fd path (bun run script.bun.sh). The five test cases from this PR pass on the #40710 branch. The three cases it did not have (export "" exits 1, and the exit code for mixed valid and invalid words, for bare names and for assignments) are now part of #40710.
