[JSC] AOT: retire the records of a load that settles inside a require() when the VM is idle - #981
In a bun build --compile --aot executable, an import() whose load settles inside a require() keeps its module record. 121 records stay behind 120 modules, where Bun's test allows 12. About 690 bytes a module, once. Never reported.
Modules::retireRecordsOfSettledLoads() (aot/runtime/AOTModules.cpp) returns while a synchronous module queue is open or an evaluation runs. The frame that holds either ends with no settled load, so nothing calls it again.
Fix
A call that one of these two guards refuses while the loader holds records registers one VM::whenIdle() listener. It calls the function again.
A require() that asks the loader already retires behind its own load: a refusal inside registers nothing.
Then the program collects six times, each behind a turn, and prints heapStats().objectTypeCounts for CompiledModuleRecord, ModuleRegistryEntry and Promise. It prints 1 1 14 before the calls and 121 121 496 behind them. With the change it prints 1 1 14. The live heap behind the calls is 226,375 bytes without the change and 143,543 with it (1,107,655 and 281,783 for 1,200 modules): 690 bytes a module.
A later load retires these records only if the loader takes it. An import() of a CommonJS file or of a built-in module does. An import() of an ES module of the program or another require() does not.
The bound is the one of test/aot/a-module-that-has-run-keeps-no-record.test.ts in oven-sh/bun: "behind a hundred and twenty modules a program holds a handful of records". Nobody reported the leftover. #961 names it in its Notes.
The path
Read with lldb on an engine built from source.
require("./running_i.ts") is Modules::evaluateSynchronously. It opens a VM::SynchronousModuleQueueScope and takes the arm for a module without top-level await (evaluateWithOwnStack, then JSModuleLoader::drainSynchronousModuleQueue).
running_i calls import(). askLoaderForImport hands the loader a record, which goes into m_modulesWhoseRecordsLoaderHolds. didStartLoad keeps the promise in m_loadsInFlight.
The drain runs ImportModuleNamespace, which calls AOT::didSettleLoad. That calls retireRecordsOfSettledLoads(), which returns at its first guard: the queue of the require() is open.
The arm returns. Nothing calls retireRecordsOfSettledLoads() again.
The function has three call sites: two in AOT::didSettleLoad, and the tail of evaluateSynchronously. Only the arms that ask the loader and the arm for a module with top-level await reach that tail.
What the change does
retireRecordsOfSettledLoads() splits its first guard. vm->synchronousModuleQueue() and m_innermostEvaluation are held by a frame. The other four (m_rootWhoseFilesRun, m_rootWhoseFilesRanAhead, m_fileWhoseJobsWaitForLoader, m_levelsOfLoads) return as before.
A refusal by the first two, while m_modulesWhoseRecordsLoaderHolds is not empty, calls the new Modules::retireRecordsWhenVMIsIdle(). It sets m_retiresRecordsWhenVMIsIdle and calls VM::whenIdle() once.
The listener walks VMState::instances under instancesLock, as forgetUnfinishedLoadsOfRetiredRealms() does. For each Modules with the flag it calls retireRecordsOfSettledLoads() and then clears the flag. By reading, the pass allocates no cell and takes two locks: the one of the caches and the cell lock of the loader.
m_isLoadingForRequire is set in the two arms of evaluateSynchronously that ask the loader. Their tail calls the pass, so a refusal inside them registers nothing.
The second call is the same pass. It retires only what a call from didSettleLoad retires.

Not built: an own bit of VM::EntryScopeService. It saves the 2 allocations of a turn with a refusal. It puts a test for aot/ into VM::executeEntryScopeServicesOnExit().

With #961 below this commit (4d45755 lineage), the shape of #961's Notes, where the required module is imported back, goes from 121 121 375 to 1 1 14. The two changes do not depend on each other.
Under bun test --aot --isolate a test file that did such a require() kept its realm, because m_loadsInFlight holds the promise. Eight such files and a file that counts: 9 globals without, 2 with (2 also where the files do nothing). #974 forgets the loads of a retired realm at their owner, so on main this may already hold. Not measured: no Bun tree for main is pushed.
What stays
The imported module exports then and the require() runs in a timer: 121 121 734 with and without. The promise is still pending when the VM is idle, because the job that calls then runs later. The pending load refuses, not the stack, and nothing asks again. From a job the drain is one VM entry and the records go.
A module that awaits keeps its record, with every module above it: 120 await import() of modules with await null print 121 121 494 with and without, with no require() anywhere. hasRunToItsEndWithItsCycle() asks for asyncEvaluationOrder().isUnset() (question 2).
A CommonJS file that an import() loaded keeps its record: 121 121 494 behind 120 await import("./file_i.cjs"), with and without.
A module that failed keeps its record, with the error.
A file on disk that imports a module of the program with an import statement: 241 records behind 120 files with and without (the entries go from 361 to 241).
A refusal by a guard that a load holds returns as before. The settle of that load calls again. m_rootWhoseFilesRun is in this group: none of the shapes above needs it.
A require() that asks the loader and returns at one of the two exception checks in front of its own call leaves what its load made, as before. The error of the module does not go this way: it rejects the promise, and the call comes first.
A refusal where nothing has entered the VM is dropped as before: VM::whenIdle() calls at once, under the guard. The next pass takes the records.
Tests
Six native tests in aot/tests/AOTModuleProgramTests.cpp. Five run an IR program in the shell and count, in a heap snapshot, the CompiledModuleRecord cells that a ModuleLoader or a ModuleRegistryEntry names.
no-record-of-import-settled-inside-require: the refusal by the queue.
no-record-of-import-settled-inside-require-under-evaluation: the require() returns under an evaluation. Fails with a call at the return of require().
no-record-of-import-settled-in-jobs-that-running-module-has-host-run: the refusal by the evaluation alone. Fails if only the queue registers.
no-record-of-imports-settled-inside-requires-of-two-entries: two timers, counted in the first job behind the first one. Fails if the flag is never cleared.
no-record-of-import-settled-inside-require-by-native-code: in process, first with nothing entered in the VM, then under a VMEntryScope. Crashes if the flag is cleared before the second call.
Results:

Bun main (3f3a9ff87c) on 4d45755 + this commit, release with assertions: the tests of Bump WebKit (oven-sh/WebKit#981): --aot retires the records of an import() that settles inside a require() bun#47686 pass, and eight of them fail without the change. The same holds under bun bd (debug with ASAN) with the prebuilt engines. The 439 programs of test/aot/parallel/modules give the same result with and without (435 pass, 3 skip, 1 fails in its reference run under plain Bun with assertions). 11 of the 13 files of test/aot/modules-in-a-test-run*.test.ts pass. In the other two, six mock.module tests fail, with and without the change.
Not run here: the rest of test/aot, and any ASAN build. Bun's CI runs both on the pinned build.

The retire itself is about 890 instructions a record. An import() that settles in a job pays the same on both engines.
A module that the loader loads is one above an import cycle (IsLoadedByLoader). The +10 is the flag in the arm and one refused call that registers nothing.
Code, release jsc: text +576 bytes. retireRecordsOfSettledLoads 1,047 to 1,082 bytes, evaluateSynchronously 3,560 to 3,609, new: retireRecordsWhenVMIsIdle 98, the listener 338, its vtable 40. sizeof(Modules) is 2,904 with and without: the two flags lie in padding.
objdump of both shells: VM::drainMicrotasks (258 instructions), VMEntryScope::tearDownSlow (33), VM::whenIdle (37) and AOT::didSettleLoad (34) are the same. evaluateSynchronously has 846 where it had 838: the 8 are in the two arms that ask the loader.
In a layered bun test --aot run one later import() of such a module takes 12 jobs where plain Bun takes 8. Without the change it is the second one behind the require() (8 12 8), with it the first (12 8 8).
Self-review
33 concerns. Addressed, among others: the commit is on main and needs no #961, nothing registers inside a require() that asks the loader (it was +400 instructions for a first require() alone in its turn), the flag is cleared behind the second call, m_rootWhoseFilesRun does not register, the native tests count what the loader holds and cover the evaluation alone, two VM entries, a throw and native code, and the Bun tests cover a test run, a file on disk and a throw.
Declined:
The shape with then (4 concerns): a test of one more flag of the promise, where the pass asks for a pending load, would take it. Modules::isAnythingBeingLoaded() has the same test and would then disagree with the pass. Not built. The shape is named above with its counts.
Done in part: one order program of the three asked for, and no native program with a load that is still pending when the VM is idle.
Two questions
The records go at the end of the turn. A call at the return of require() as well would take them in the same task, for +2 instructions on every first require() of an ES module. Is the end of the turn soon enough?
hasRunToItsEndWithItsCycle() keeps the record of a module that awaits. Is that a decision, or the same leftover one step further?
The branch
One commit on main at 9f5001e. main has taken #979 since (f25de97): the commit merges with it without conflict, and I did not build it there. The Bun tests ran on 4d45755 plus the same commit, because oven-sh/bun main pins 4d45755 and has not taken #967 to #978 yet. The shell and testaot of this branch were built with the build scripts of oven-sh/bun#47605, plus the 39 feature names that #978 adds.
…() when the VM is idle
Modules::retireRecordsOfSettledLoads() returns where a synchronous module
queue is open and where an evaluation is under way. A frame on the stack
holds each of the two, and what ends that frame settles no load: a
require() returns, a body goes on behind the jobs that it had the host
run. So nobody called again, and what a load had made inside stayed: one
CompiledModuleRecord and one ModuleRegistryEntry for each module that an
import() loaded before a require() returned.
A call that one of the two refuses while the loader holds records now
asks VM::whenIdle() once. The listener calls
retireRecordsOfSettledLoads() again for each Modules that was refused,
under the same guards. A require() that asks the loader calls it behind
its own load, so what is refused in that load waits for that call and
asks for no listener. Nothing changes on the path of a require() of a
module without top-level await, or on the path of an import().
Six native tests under module-programs/: five programs in the shell that
count the records which the loader holds in a heap snapshot, and one that
calls require() from native code with nothing entered in the VM.
Status: reproduced with Bun main (3f3a9ff87c) on the engine commit that it pins (4d45755). A program that calls require() on 120 ES modules, each of which calls import() on another module, prints 121 121 496 records, registry entries and promises. The bound of Bun's test is 12. With this commit on that engine it prints 1 1 14.
On main (9f5001e) the six new native tests fail without the change and pass with it. testaot native passes (3,069).

Walkthrough
Require-time module evaluation now tracks active loading. Record retirement can be deferred and retried when the VM becomes idle. New tests check record retention and cleanup across nested imports, separate VM entries, throwing modules, and native-code require.

Modules tracks require-time loading. When retirement encounters an active synchronous queue or nested evaluation, it can schedule a retry for VM idle. The retry checks eligible instances under their running images and clears their retry flags.
Validate require-time record retention and cleanup Source/JavaScriptCore/aot/tests/AOTModuleProgramTests.cpp
New tests check loader-held records and module evaluation status across nested imports, microtask drains, separate VM entries, thrown evaluations, and native-code require.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 9614a
A native require can leave module records retained until another VM entry. This is a bounded merge risk, but the retry should be preserved through the end of synchronous evaluation.

Explanation
The title names the main change: when a load settles inside a require() and the VM is idle, the module records are retired. This matches the summary, which adds a VM::whenIdle() listener that retries retirement of records when the synchronous module queue or an evaluation blocks the normal path. The title is specific and identifies the primary change, so it passes.

Explanation
The description is long and detailed, and it covers the problem, the fix, background, downsides, tests, measurements, and open questions. It does not follow the required WebKit template, though. It lacks the bug title and the Bugzilla link (https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=#####). It lacks the 'Reviewed by' line. It also lacks the explicit ChangeLog-style file list, with each changed file and the function names touched. The PR links an oven-sh/bun PR and a WebKit PR, but no WebKit Bugzilla bug.

bun test --aot --isolatea test file that did such arequire()kept its realm, becausem_loadsInFlightholds the promise. Eight such files and a file that counts: 9 globals without, 2 with (2 also where the files do nothing). #974 forgets the loads of a retired realm at their owner, so onmainthis may already hold. Not measured: no Bun tree formainis pushed. What stays
thenand therequire()runs in a timer:121 121 734with and without. The promise is still pending when the VM is idle, because the job that callsthenruns later. The pending load refuses, not the stack, and nothing asks again. From a job the drain is one VM entry and the records go.await import()of modules withawait nullprint121 121 494with and without, with norequire()anywhere.hasRunToItsEndWithItsCycle()asks forasyncEvaluationOrder().isUnset()(question 2).import()loaded keeps its record:121 121 494behind 120await import("./file_i.cjs"), with and without.importstatement: 241 records behind 120 files with and without (the entries go from 361 to 241).m_rootWhoseFilesRunis in this group: none of the shapes above needs it.require()that asks the loader and returns at one of the two exception checks in front of its own call leaves what its load made, as before. The error of the module does not go this way: it rejects the promise, and the call comes first.VM::whenIdle()calls at once, under the guard. The next pass takes the records.Tests
Six native tests in
aot/tests/AOTModuleProgramTests.cpp. Five run an IR program in the shell and count, in a heap snapshot, theCompiledModuleRecordcells that aModuleLoaderor aModuleRegistryEntrynames.no-record-of-import-settled-inside-require: the refusal by the queue.no-record-of-import-settled-inside-require-under-evaluation: therequire()returns under an evaluation. Fails with a call at the return ofrequire().no-record-of-import-settled-in-jobs-that-running-module-has-host-run: the refusal by the evaluation alone. Fails if only the queue registers.no-record-of-imports-settled-inside-requires-of-two-entries: two timers, counted in the first job behind the first one. Fails if the flag is never cleared.records-of-import-settled-inside-require-that-throws.no-record-of-import-settled-inside-require-by-native-code: in process, first with nothing entered in the VM, then under aVMEntryScope. Crashes if the flag is cleared before the second call. Results:

The same holds underbun bd(debug with ASAN) with the prebuilt engines. The 439 programs oftest/aot/parallel/modulesgive the same result with and without (435 pass, 3 skip, 1 fails in its reference run under plain Bun with assertions). 11 of the 13 files oftest/aot/modules-in-a-test-run*.test.tspass. In the other two, sixmock.moduletests fail, with and without the change.test/aot, and any ASAN build. Bun's CI runs both on the pinned build.Measurements

The +10 is the flag in the arm and one refused call that registers nothing.require()of a module whose own record waited (the shape of [JSC] AOT: settle the import() of a module that a require() still evaluates #961) takes 450 instructions from a later turn where it took 749. 33 concerns. Addressed, among others: the commit is on
mainand needs no #961, nothing registers inside arequire()that asks the loader (it was +400 instructions for a firstrequire()alone in its turn), the flag is cleared behind the second call,m_rootWhoseFilesRundoes not register, the native tests count what the loader holds and cover the evaluation alone, two VM entries, a throw and native code, and the Bun tests cover a test run, a file on disk and a throw.Declined:
then(4 concerns): a test of one more flag of the promise, where the pass asks for a pending load, would take it.Modules::isAnythingBeingLoaded()has the same test and would then disagree with the pass. Not built. The shape is named above with its counts.require()with a termination (1): the shell has no hook for it. [JSC] Test hooks for a termination inside a module load: $vm.callWithTerminationAtTrapCheck(), $vm.moduleLoaderLoadSync(), setModuleLoaderFetchHook() #975 adds one and is open.Done in part: one order program of the three asked for, and no native program with a load that is still pending when the VM is idle.
Two questions
require()as well would take them in the same task, for +2 instructions on every firstrequire()of an ES module. Is the end of the turn soon enough?hasRunToItsEndWithItsCycle()keeps the record of a module that awaits. Is that a decision, or the same leftover one step further? The branch
One commit on
mainat 9f5001e.mainhas taken #979 since (f25de97): the commit merges with it without conflict, and I did not build it there. The Bun tests ran on 4d45755 plus the same commit, because oven-sh/bunmainpins 4d45755 and has not taken #967 to #978 yet. The shell andtestaotof this branch were built with the build scripts of oven-sh/bun#47605, plus the 39 feature names that #978 adds.
