Problem

  • simdutf::validate_utf8_with_errors reads up to 5 bytes before its input when another thread or process writes the first byte between two reads. rewind_and_validate_with_errors (Source/WTF/wtf/simdutf/simdutf_impl.h:3798) checks *start, then walks buf-- while *buf is a continuation byte. The walk has no lower bound.
  • In Bun, Bun.XML.parse and Bun.TOML.parse of a file mapping whose first byte another process rewrites: panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0x7FCFBA1D3FFF. The address is the mapping minus 1.

Fix

  • The walk also stops at start.
  • Correct because memory that nothing writes takes the same path as before. The check above saw a leading byte at start, so the walk never stepped over it.
  • Verified with two release builds of Bun, see Notes: without the bound 6 of 6 runs end in that fault, with it 0 of 6.

Background

  • validate_utf8_with_errors finds an error with the SIMD kernel. It then calls this scalar helper to find the position of the error. For an error in the first 64 bytes it passes buf == start.
  • WTF::Unicode::checkUTF8 and checkUTF8WithoutUTF16Length call it too.
  • The convert helpers (rewind_and_convert_with_errors) already take prior_bytes as a bound.

Downsides

  • simdutf_impl.h is an imported file ("auto-generated, do not edit"). An import of a newer simdutf must keep this hunk. I did not open an issue at simdutf/simdutf.
  • No test in this repository. The read needs a second writer between two loads, and jsc has no caller of this function over memory that another agent writes.
  • Cost: one pointer compare per step of a walk of at most 5 steps, on the error path only. Notes has the instruction counts.
Notes

What happens without the bound. generic_validate_utf8_with_errors calls rewind_and_validate_with_errors(input, input + count, length - count) for the block that has the error, with count == 0 for the first block. The helper returns TOO_LONG at 0 if *start is a continuation byte. Otherwise it walks back from buf over continuation bytes, at most 5 times, and validates from where it stopped. If a writer puts a continuation byte at start after the check, the walk leaves the input. res.count -= extra_len then wraps, so the caller also gets a position above the length. With the bound the position stays in [0, length].

The probe. One process maps a 20 byte XML file (or a 12 byte TOML file) with Bun.mmap, makes an alias of the mapping with bun:ffi (toArrayBuffer(ptr(view), 0, view.length)) and calls Bun.XML.parse(alias) in a loop for 5 seconds. A second process maps the same file and writes 0x80 and the original first byte in turn.

Build of Bun (release, linux x64) XML, 3 runs TOML, 3 runs
oven-sh/bun@963452075e, WebKit 7d0c8a7 3 faults at the mapping minus 1 3 faults at the mapping minus 1
the same sources, WebKit with this change 0 faults, 3.2 to 3.4 million parses each 0 faults, 3.4 to 4.1 million parses each

Cost. Release Bun, instructions:u per call, (I(2N) - I(N)) / N, minimum of the runs, concurrent JIT and GC off. The third column is a second copy of the first binary.

Bun.XML.parse of without with without, again
64 valid bytes 5,371.7 5,390.5 5,344.3
1 MiB, valid 2,207,376 2,209,228 2,211,370
1 MiB, a bad byte at offset 10 17,847,783 17,847,168 17,847,893
1 MiB, a bad byte at the end 25,518,681 25,518,690 25,518,561

The build "with" also has #872 and #862. Neither touches this code.

Where it came from. #872 carried this commit at first. It is independent of that change, so it is here alone.

…the input

validate_utf8_with_errors finds the position of an error with rewind_and_validate_with_errors, which
checks that the input starts with a leading byte and then walks back from the failing block over
continuation bytes. For an error in the first block the walk starts at the first byte. If another
thread or process wrote a continuation byte there after the check (a SharedArrayBuffer, a file
mapping, a buffer a read is filling), the walk read up to five bytes before the input and validation
started there.

The walk now also stops at start. Input that nothing writes takes the same path as before.

Walkthrough

The backward scan in rewind_and_validate_with_errors now checks that buf > start, while retaining its five-iteration limit.

*

* Two modes via `cfg.webkit`:

*

* **prebuilt**: Download tarball from oven-sh/WebKit releases. Tarball name

* encodes {os, arch, musl, debug|lto, asan} — each is a separate ABI.

* ASAN MUST match bun's setting: WTF::Vector layout changes with ASAN

* (see WTF/Vector.h:682), so mixing → silent memory corruption.

*

* **local**: Source at `vendor/WebKit/`, or `$BUN_WEBKIT_PATH` if set. User

* clones manually (clone takes 10+ min — too slow for the build system

* to do). Set `BUN_WEBKIT_PATH` to share one clone across worktrees. We

* cmake it like any other dep. Headers land in the BUILD dir (generated

* during configure), which is why `provides.includes` returns absolute

* paths.

*

* ## Implementation notes

*

* - Build dir is `buildDir/deps/webkit/` (generic path), NOT CMake's

* `vendor/WebKit/WebKitBuild/`. Better: consistent, cleaned by `rm -rf

Both minima are thai.utf8.txt, the one file that loses. ... * src/icelake/implementation.cpp[diff] ... For validation and transcoding, we also provide functions that will stop on error and return a result struct which is a pair of two fields:
    and a branch per block that validate_utf8 does not pay -- the gap between
    the two functions is up to 29% on ASCII-heavy input. checker.error is a
    sticky OR-accumulator, so the test only has to be frequent enough to bound
    how far the scalar rewind has to back up. Testing every eighth block hands
    a detected error to scalar::utf8::rewind_and_validate_with_errors at most
    nine blocks early; since that helper re-validates forward to the end of the
    buffer, naming an earlier position costs only scalar work on the error path
    and cannot change the reported position.

    Measured on an Intel Xeon Gold 6548N (Emerald Rapids), gcc 14.3, single
    core, best-of-7, over 29 corpus files. Buffer at offset 24 from a 64-byte
    boundary:

        Latin-Lipsum   63.2 -> 80.5 GB/s  (+27%)
        english        47.1 -> 60.2 GB/s  (+28%)
        twitter.json   35.9 -> 43.0 GB/s  (+20%)
        all 29 files: min -3.6%, median +8.5%, max +27.7%

    Already-aligned buffer: min -9.4%, median +1.8%, max +13.2%.

Clamp the error position before subtracting extra_len.

If a concurrent writer changes *start to a continuation byte after the initial check, the bounded scan can stop at start with extra_len > 0. Validation then returns TOO_LONG at count 0, and res.count -= extra_len wraps the error position outside the input.

Suggested fix
result res = validate_with_errors(buf, len + extra_len);
-res.count -= extra_len;
+if (res.count < extra_len)
+  res.count = 0;
+else
+  res.count -= extra_len;
return res;

Clamp the error position in the `validate_with_errors` result before adjusting
it by `extra_len`: set `res.count` to zero when it is smaller than `extra_len`,
and otherwise subtract `extra_len` as before.
