BunV8HeapSnapshotBuilder: survive heaps past the Vector allocation cap - #529
Conversation
WalkthroughThe heap snapshot builder now uses segmented node storage and centralized overflow-aware edge insertion. String-table and JSON serialization allocations record overflow. Text serialization returns an empty string, and byte serialization returns an empty vector after overflow. ChangesHeap snapshot overflow handling
Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The PR improves large-heap snapshot handling, but lookup-table growth may still abort the process instead of returning a catchable overflow, and serialization continues unnecessary work after overflow. Merge readiness therefore requires addressing or explicitly accepting these bounded risks. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 3 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

A contiguous WTF::Vector caps a single allocation at about 2GiB and CRASH()es when growth passes it. The builder stored one 96-byte Node per heap cell in such a Vector, so a heap with more than about 15M cells aborted the process inside the marking walk. - Shrink Node from 96 to 40 bytes. The edges vector, traceLocation, parentNodeId, and childrenVectorIndex members were written but never read: trace_function_infos is always serialized empty. - Store nodes in a SegmentedVector. Node count no longer has a cap, no multi-GiB realloc happens, and element addresses stay stable for the atomic edge-count updates during marking. - Edges stay contiguous because serialization sorts them. Append edges and strings with tryAppend and record an overflow instead of crashing. - Serialize through OverflowPolicy::RecordOverflow (string output) and a tryAppend byte sink (bytes output). On any recorded overflow, json() returns a null String and jsonBytes() returns an empty Vector, and the new hasOverflowed() accessor reports it. Embedders can then raise a catchable error instead of dying.

WebKit WTF HashMap set tryAdd allocation failure HashMap API HashTable
💡 Result:
In WebKit's WTF (Web Template Framework) library, HashMap and its underlying HashTable implementation do not provide a standard "tryAdd" API that returns a boolean specifically to indicate success or failure related to memory allocation [1][2][3][4]. Instead, standard HashMap insertion methods like set and add are designed to be used in contexts where allocation success is expected [1][2]. WebKit generally handles allocation failures through systemic mechanisms (e.g., crashing or calling out-of-memory handlers) rather than through per-call error codes for containers [4][5][6]. Regarding your query on "tryAdd": 1. While WTF::HashMap does not expose a general-purpose tryAdd method for allocation failure recovery, specific WebKit components (such as JSC::HasOwnPropertyCache) do implement a method named tryAdd [7][8][9]. 2. In this specific context, tryAdd is used as a caching utility to attempt to insert entries into a fixed-size or specific-policy cache [8][10][11]. It is not a general error-handling mechanism for standard HashMap allocation failures [8]. 3. The underlying HashTable, which backs HashMap, manages memory via an Allocator template parameter (commonly Malloc) [12][4][13]. It contains logic to check if allocation is allowed (e.g., Allocator::isAllocationAllowed) [4][5], but these are internal safety assertions rather than APIs intended for user-space error handling during insertion [4]. For robust handling of potential out-of-memory conditions, WebKit developers typically ensure that hash containers are either appropriately sized, reside in areas where OOM is handled by the garbage collector, or use structures designed for specific memory constraints, rather than relying on an API-level tryAdd return value [4][6].

💡 Result:
The terms m_stringsLookupTable and BunV8HeapSnapshotBuilder are not standard public-facing APIs or widely recognized components within the Bun runtime or its underlying WebKit-based JavaScriptCore engine. Research into the Bun and WebKit repositories does not yield these specific identifiers, suggesting they may be internal, localized, or transient names used in private development branches, specific research projects, or internal tooling not reflected in the public source code [1][2][3]. In the context of Bun's architecture: - Bun utilizes a custom version of WebKit's JavaScriptCore (JSC) with various additions and patches (guarded by USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS)) to support Node.js compatibility, native FFI, and performance optimizations [1][2]. - String handling in Bun often involves specialized utilities, such as src/codegen/generate-compact-string-table.ts and src/comptime_string_map.zig, which are used to generate efficient, compile-time string tables and maps [4][5]. - Heap profiling and snapshotting in WebKit/JSC are typically managed via components like HeapSnapshot, HeapProfiler, and SlotVisitor [6][7]. If you encountered these terms in a specific stack trace, error message, or private code base, it is likely they belong to a non-public or highly specialized extension of the engine [2][8].

WebKit WTF HashMap fallible allocation tryReserve tryAdd HashTable add out of memory
💡 Result:
In the WebKit WTF (Web Template Framework) library, memory allocation for HashMap and HashSet is managed by the underlying HashTable implementation [1][2]. Regarding your specific questions on fallible allocation, tryReserve, tryAdd, and out-of-memory (OOM) handling: 1. Allocation Strategy: The WTF::HashTable core, which powers HashMap, typically relies on internal allocateTable routines [1][2]. These operations check if allocation is allowed (using Allocator::isAllocationAllowed()) before proceeding [1][3]. If a memory allocation fails, the default behavior in many WebKit contexts is to trigger a fatal error or panic (often via RELEASE_ASSERT or similar mechanisms) rather than returning a status code to the caller [1][3]. 2. Lack of Explicit 'try' API: Unlike standard C++ containers that might offer try_emplace or similar patterns designed for graceful error handling, the standard WTF::HashMap::add and HashTable::add methods are generally designed under the assumption that allocations will succeed [1][2]. There is no ubiquitous, standardized 'tryAdd' or 'tryReserve' API across all WebKit hash collections that explicitly returns a success boolean to handle OOM scenarios gracefully at the application level [4][5]. 3. OOM and Inconsistency: WebKit has historically addressed concerns regarding container consistency during OOM events [6]. For example, recent improvements to OrderedHashTable have focused on ensuring that if an OOM occurs during a rehash or expansion, the container does not remain in an inconsistent, corrupted state [6]. This is often achieved by calculating necessary metadata before resizing and ensuring that the new buffer is fully prepared before swapping it with the old one, allowing the operation to be atomic from the perspective of the container's integrity [6]. If you are encountering OOM issues, the architectural expectation in WebKit is that the system memory pressure will be managed at a higher level (e.g., via the JavaScriptCore GC or platform-specific memory pressure handlers) rather than through fine-grained, fallible allocation checks on every hash map insertion [1][6]. If you require specific behavior for memory-constrained environments, you would typically need to implement custom allocators or use specialized container types that are designed to handle memory failure scenarios explicitly [7].

Handle allocation failure during lookup-table growth.
When a new hashKey requires growth, m_stringsLookupTable.set() calls inlineAdd() and the underlying HashTable::add() allocation path. This path is infallible, so allocation failure can terminate before m_overflowed is set. Use a fallible lookup-table insertion path and set m_overflowed when it fails.

…wed() and bail early once overflowed
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Both earlier findings are now addressed — f1cb116 adds the early m_overflowed bail at the top of both serializers and stores the StringBuilder/JsonByteSink overflow into m_overflowed before returning, so hasOverflowed() reflects serializer-only overflow too. I didn't find any new issues; given the paired Bun-side change that consumes hasOverflowed() and the concurrency-adjacent edits in the marking callbacks, a quick human pass is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
- Node struct shrink and field reordering — removed members (
edges, traceLocation, parentNodeId,childrenVectorIndex) are not read anywhere in the file; designated initializers updated to match the new order. SegmentedVector<Node, 1024>swap — range-for iteration andoperator[]usages in analyzeEdge/serializers are the only access patterns, both supported; element-address stability now backs theatomicExchangeAdd(&m_nodes[…].edgesCount, 1).- Overflow plumbing —
appendEdge/addStringusetryAppendand setm_overflowed; both serializers early-return on entry and propagate local sink overflow back tom_overflowedbefore the final null/empty return. analyzeEdgelock narrowing — only Hidden edges now takem_buildingNodeMutex, matching the sole remaining write (edgesCount).
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR shrinks BunV8HeapSnapshotBuilder::Node by dropping four unused members and reordering fields, switches node storage from Vector<Node> to SegmentedVector<Node, 1024>, routes edge/string appends through tryAppend with an std::atomic<bool> m_overflowed flag, and makes both JSON serializers overflow-tolerant (StringBuilder with OverflowPolicy::RecordOverflow, a local JsonByteSink wrapper for the byte path). The latest commit f1cb116 responds directly to the two inline findings from earlier runs: it adds an early m_overflowed check at the top of generateV8HeapSnapshot() / generateV8HeapSnapshotBytes() and stores serializer overflow back into m_overflowed so hasOverflowed() is accurate.
Security risks
None identified. This is a diagnostic feature (V8-format heap snapshot generation) gated behind USE(BUN_JSC_ADDITIONS). No parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto/permission surface. The change reduces crash surface by replacing CRASH()-on-overflow paths with recorded failure.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate. The code runs during a GC marking walk with helper threads calling the analyze* callbacks under locks, so the atomic/lock changes deserve a look, but the edits here strictly narrow the locked region (only Hidden edges now lock to bump edgesCount) and the SegmentedVector switch removes the address-instability hazard that existed with the old Vector<Node> under concurrent atomic writes. The struct-shrink is mechanical once verified that the removed members were write-only, which they are in this file.
Other factors
Earlier runs raised two issues; both are cleanly fixed in the current diff, and no new candidates surfaced this run. A coderabbit inline comment exists at line 559 (content withheld) with state COMMENTED, not CHANGES_REQUESTED, so it does not block. I'm deferring rather than approving because the change pairs with a Bun-side PR that consumes the new hasOverflowed() contract, and the marking-thread interaction plus container swap is non-trivial enough that a maintainer glance adds value.

oven-sh/WebKit#545 completes oven-sh/WebKit#155. NativeExecutable, builtin functions written in JavaScript, bound functions and remote functions now print `function name() { [native code] }`, the same one-line shape as InternalFunction constructors and V8. lodash's isNative() builds a RegExp from hasOwnProperty's source and tests Map against it. With one shape the RegExp matches, so cloneDeep, memoize, uniq and isEqual use a native Map instead of a linear-scan ListCache under Bun. cloneDeep of 8 000 objects: 1 971 ms before, linear after. Tests: test/js/bun/jsc/function-prototype-tostring.test.ts and the oven-sh/WebKit#545 stress file as a jsc-stress fixture. Both fail on Bun 1.4.1.
Problem
A contiguous WTF::Vector caps a single allocation at about 2GiB (
isValidCapacityForVector) and CRASH()es when growth passes it. The V8 snapshot builder stores one 96-byteNodeper heap cell in such a Vector, so a heap with more than about 15M cells aborts the process during the marking walk. Reported in oven-sh/bun#40686:Bun.generateHeapSnapshot("v8")with 16M small objects dies withEXC_BREAKPOINT/ SIGABRT inBunV8HeapSnapshotBuilder::Nodevector growth.Fix
Nodefrom 96 to 40 bytes. Theedgesvector, traceLocation, parentNodeId, andchildrenVectorIndexmembers were written but never read.trace_function_infosis always serialized empty.SegmentedVector. Node count no longer has a cap, no multi-GiB realloc happens, and element addresses stay stable for the atomic edge-count updates during marking.tryAppendand record an overflow instead of crashing.OverflowPolicy::RecordOverflowfor the string output and atryAppendbyte sink for the bytes output. On any recorded overflow,json()returns a null String,jsonBytes()returns an empty Vector, and the newhasOverflowed()accessor reports it. The embedder can then raise a catchable error instead of crashing.Verification
