In the absence of a prominent map legend (#332), the user may be confused by or misinterpret the line treatment for some relatively rare or obscure road attributes. For example, this style has different kinds of dashed lines for unpaved roads versus roads under construction, and we may introduce more in the future for tracks (#216) and access restrictions.

For attributes that aren’t tied to the road’s classification, the label should include a gloss, a brief description of the attribute in parentheses. This redundancy will reinforce what the line treatment indicates, giving us more flexibility to support new attributes without worrying as much about collisions. Examples of attributes to gloss:

While we may be able to represent some of these attributes language-agnostically using icons, most will require user-facing text. #215 included a rudimentary localization system for user-facing text in the style.
