Summary

  • Merges test_baremetal_instance_restart into test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle.py (single file) so that --dist loadfile keeps both tests on the same xdist worker
  • This forces sequential execution without any config changes — loadfile already serializes same-file tests
  • Deletes the separate test_baremetal_instance_restart.py file

Why

PR #302 added the restart test in a separate file. With --dist loadfile, each file goes to a different xdist worker, so both tests ran in parallel — each provisioning a BMI simultaneously through the single-threaded sushy-emulator. Pass rate dropped from ~90% to ~24%.

The xdist_group("bmaas") fix attempted in PR #350 was ineffective because --dist loadfile ignores xdist_group markers — only --dist loadgroup respects them.

Putting both tests in the same file is the simplest fix: no global config changes, no risk to other test suites (vmaas, caas, catalog).

Context

This PR and #354 run in parallel as two investigation tracks:

Test plan

  • bmaas E2E CI pass rate returns to ~90%+ (matching pre-PR-302 baseline)
  • Both test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle and test_baremetal_instance_restart run on the same xdist worker (gw0)
  • No regressions in other test suites
  • ruff check passes

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for triggering a bare-metal instance restart through the public API.
    • Added lifecycle validation for restart progress, completion, power restoration, and restart conditions.
  • Tests

    • Added automated coverage for bare-metal instance restart behavior, including cleanup after successful or failed runs.

Walkthrough

The change adds a gRPC helper for updating a bare-metal instance restart trigger and an end-to-end lifecycle test that validates restart progress, completion, power restoration, restart conditions, and cleanup.

Changes

Bare-metal instance restart

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restart trigger update client
tests/core/grpc_client.py
GRPCClient updates spec.restart_trigger through the public BareMetalInstances endpoint.
Restart lifecycle validation
tests/bmaas/test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle.py
The lifecycle test reads restart state, polls for completion, verifies conditions and power state, and deletes the BMI. Failure cleanup logs deletion errors.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Mergeability Score: 🟡 Moderate · up to bc34a

Test cleanup may finish before the BareMetalHost is fully available, allowing later tests to contend for the same host and causing unreliable CI results. The cleanup wait should be added before merging.

I thought the idea was to do the restart test in the same test as the existing one so we don't have to reprovision?

wait_for_bmi_deletion(k8s=k8s_hub_client, name=bmi_cr)
wait_for_bmi_grpc_removal(grpc=grpc, uuid=bmi_id)
if bmh_name:
wait_for_bmh_available(k8s=k8s_hub_client, name=bmh_name, bmh_namespace=bmh_ns)

because there is 2 tests that run in sequence. in case the first failed and the second start right after it without waiting to the instance to be ready again we can failed due to unrelated problem.

This way we sure the next test will run with the right instance state

Right, but I was suggesting we don't have two tests that run in sequence in part for this reason. Just add the restart call to the existing test like we do for power ops.

…execution

Move test_baremetal_instance_restart into test_baremetal_instance_lifecycle.py
so that --dist loadfile keeps both tests on the same xdist worker, running
them sequentially. This avoids concurrent Ironic provisioning through the
single-threaded sushy-emulator, which caused ~76% CI failure rate when the
tests ran in parallel from separate files.

Also adds update_baremetal_instance_restart_trigger() helper to GRPCClient
for field-masked restart_trigger updates.
