(Tentatively labelling as semver-major, but happy to land this as-is on v12.x as this is unlikely to be used in practice.)

This option is not useful in practice, as mentioned in comments and the
documentation, because the overhead of calling into JS makes it
unreasonably expensive.

an argument could be made for a proper deprecation cycle but I'm good with this approach also
