Description of Change
This sort of started with #1657 where I was a bit hesitant to decide what to do with this type of thing. I though reflection would be good enough for the very few people, but it will probably annoying. So, a better way is to make certain externally-configurable points public and embrace it.
So the first bit is with a way to configure the linux flavor and then the next will be #1817 for the locking where things need to be different.
