Purpose

Two-commit follow-up to your vllm-project/vllm#58438, supplying the fixes described in my review:

  1. Use the validated diffusion sample count for preflight, streaming choice state, batched completion indexing and metrics attribution. With diffusion_samples=4 and the default n=1, the original chat/completion handlers allocate state for one child although admission produces four.
  2. Move the existing parameter clone before validation. Admission currently changes the caller's SamplingParams.n, so submitting that same object again fails with diffusion_samples and n cannot both be set. Both skip_clone modes are covered.

The fanout validation rules are shared between admission and serving. The client's request.n stays unchanged, and the existing conflicting-input checks remain in place.

This targets mmastrac/vllm:diffusion-samples at af96d8298c4c1746c35b4c1215d9794ec6098c35. Its upstream rebase is still needed: vllm-project/vllm#59107 removed the validator's async_scheduling argument, so the validator integration and tests will need adapting during that rebase.

Fresh open-PR searches found no competing correction for these two cases. The related vllm-project/vllm#63572 addresses child-seed overflow separately.

Test Plan

The same 16 tests were run with the original production files from af96d8298c and with both fixes, on CPU:

pytest -q --tb=short \
  tests/entrypoints/openai/chat_completion/test_serving_chat.py \
  tests/entrypoints/openai/completion/test_completion_error.py \
  tests/test_request_input_bounds.py \
  -k 'streaming_diffusion_samples or admission_rejection_escapes or diffusion_fanout_params or pooling_admission or input_processor_rejects_unknown'

The tests exercise real serving generators with synthetic engine outputs and the real InputProcessor. Coverage includes native-n controls, diffusion streaming, batched completions, usage/metrics, preflight counts, reusable parameters and pooling controls.

Test Result

Validated on 2026-11-05 against the branch above:

Selection Original production With both fixes
Streaming / preflight 5 failed, 7 passed 12 passed
Input admission / controls 2 failed, 2 passed 4 passed
Combined 7 failed, 9 passed 16 passed

There were no test errors. The original failures are the expected response-state/count mismatches and repeated-admission validation errors. All applicable pre-commit run --files <changed files> checks pass, and git diff --check is clean.

CPU request-handling validation only; live DiffusionGemma serving, GPU/model-quality checks and performance measurements were not rerun. Current-main composition is not claimed.

AI-assisted analysis, implementation, test development and drafting; validation ran locally.

Essential Elements of an Effective PR Description Checklist
  • The purpose of the PR, such as "Fix some issue (link existing issues this PR will resolve)".
  • The test plan, such as providing test command.
  • The test results, such as pasting the results comparison before and after, or e2e results
  • (Optional) The necessary documentation update, such as updating supported_models.md and examples for a new model.

Resolve diffusion_samples through the same checks for engine admission,
OpenAI preflight, streaming choice slots and per-request metrics. Preserve
the client n value so request conversion does not conflict with the alias.

Cover chat and completion streaming, multiple completion prompts, final
usage, non-streaming metrics and preflight accounting. At vllm-project#58438 head
af96d82, five focused assertions fail; all twelve pass with this fix.
Validation uses CPU serving generators with synthetic engine outputs,
not a live DiffusionGemma model run.

Follow-up for mmastrac's vllm-project#58438.

Keep diffusion sample fanout and read-only normalization local to each request so one SamplingParams object can be reused across prompts. Preserve shallow-copy and pooling parameter behavior.

👋 Hi! Thank you for contributing to the vLLM project.

💬 Join our developer Slack at https://slack.vllm.ai to discuss your PR in #pr-reviews, coordinate on features in #feat- channels, or join special interest groups in #sig- channels.

PRs do not trigger a full CI run by default. Reviewers with write access and configured trusted contributors can comment /ci run for upstream CI or /amd-ci run for AMD CI only whenever CI signals are needed.

Once the PR is approved or has the ready label, the PR author can also use the corresponding /ci run, /ci retry, and /ci cancel commands, or their /amd-ci variants. New commits do not start upstream CI automatically.
