Based on discussion and telemetry, the new UI for the remote explorer should be similar to this:

Telemetry indicates that not many users use two different remote types (ssh, containers, wsl), and almost no-one uses more than one remote type in the same day. Therefore, to keep the UI clean, reuse an existing concept, and optimize of the most common use cases, a dropdown UI is ideal.

However, that does not take into account where the forwarded ports fit in. First the forwarded ports UI must be reconciled with the planned remote explorer UI, then the remote explorer UI needs to be implemented.
