Summary

  • turn a stored numeric Tailscale peer address into a fallback-only Iroh direct-address hint
  • require an active Tailscale tunnel before authorizing that private-network hint
  • preserve exact EndpointID pinning and keep raw Tailscale bearer transport disabled
  • attach trusted persisted or team Tailscale addresses to broker-discovered personal Iroh routes

Security model

Tailscale supplies an optional network path. Iroh still authenticates the Mac by EndpointID before cmux sends its session token. A stale address or wrong tailnet cannot substitute another endpoint, and raw-only legacy routes remain fail-closed until authenticated discovery supplies an Iroh identity.

Verification

  • CMUXMobileCore: 193 tests passed
  • CmuxMobileTransport: 32 tests passed
  • CmuxIrohTransport: 344 tests passed
  • focused reconnect route and no-downgrade tests passed
  • isolated iOS Simulator composition suite: 14 tests passed
  • tagged iOS Simulator build tscont succeeded

The full CmuxMobileShell suite still has its existing foreground-resume timing failure on the unchanged non-Tailscale path; focused route and security coverage passes.

Summary by cubic

Route Tailscale connectivity through authenticated Iroh by attaching short‑lived private .directAddress hints to Iroh routes and pinning connections to Iroh. This prevents raw Tailscale downgrades while still letting Tailscale carry Iroh when a tunnel is active.

  • New Features

    • Add a synthesizer that turns numeric Tailscale IPv4/IPv6 peers into fallback‑only Iroh hints with TTL and activeTailscaleTunnel; rejects LAN, public, MagicDNS, and generic hosts.
    • Attach these hints during broker merge and reconnect/ticket route selection, then pin to .iroh and drop raw host/port fallbacks once Iroh exists; EndpointID pinning is preserved.
  • Hardening

    • Preserve route count and order; de‑dupe/refresh same addresses; bracket IPv6; enforce hint limits; ignore expired hints so they don’t consume capacity.
    • Gate private hints on CmxIrohNetworkProfileKey.activeTailscaleTunnel; stale or wrong tailnets cannot bypass Iroh; tests added across CMUXMobileCore, CmuxMobileShell, and cmuxFeature.

Written for commit 879c4ee. Summary will update on new commits.

    • Applied private-path hint decoration earlier during device route merging and composition.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Avoided duplicate or stale private-path hints by refreshing/replacing per address.
    • Ignored non-applicable Tailscale endpoints (e.g., Magic DNS) and ensured expired hints don’t consume capacity.
  • Tests
    • Expanded iROH reconnect, hint metadata, refresh/expiration, and active-Tailscale authorization coverage.

Greptile Summary

This PR routes Tailscale connectivity through authenticated Iroh by synthesizing short-lived fallback-only directAddress hints from numeric Tailscale IPv4/IPv6 peers and attaching them to existing Iroh routes at reconnect, ticket, and broker-merge time. The Tailscale address never contributes identity — Iroh EndpointID pinning is preserved and hints are gated on an active Tailscale tunnel via MobileIrohNetworkPathState.snapshot().

  • CmxIrohPrivatePathSynthesizer — new file adds addingIrohPrivatePaths(to:observedAt:) (a count-preserving map that injects de-duped, capacity-bounded hints) and irohTailscalePathHint(observedAt:) (rejects LAN, public, MagicDNS and generic hosts; brackets IPv6 correctly).
  • MobileIrohNetworkPathState — snapshot() now computes Tailscale presence live from an injectable NetworkInterfaceAddressProviding dependency, keeping the profile fail-closed when no utun-style interface with a CGNAT address is present.
  • MobileIrohRouteCatalog.merged — passes personal + team to the synthesizer so team Tailscale addresses contribute hints to personal Iroh routes, takes prefix(personal.count) guarded by a precondition, then merges original team routes (team Iroh routes intentionally receive no private path hints).

Confidence Score: 5/5

Safe to merge — the synthesizer is a pure count-preserving transformation with no identity side-effects; the Tailscale profile is always computed live and fail-closed; EndpointID pinning and the no-downgrade invariant are unchanged.

All three call sites (reconnect, ticket, broker merge) apply the transformation before filtering, so hint collection sees the full route set. The per-route injection logic correctly handles de-dup, refresh, and capacity limits in every traced edge case. The precondition in merged and the static let + preconditionFailure for activeTailscaleTunnel address the two invariant-enforcement concerns from the previous review cycle. Test coverage spans hint metadata, IPv6 bracketing, MagicDNS rejection, expired-hint slot reclamation, Tailscale profile gating, and dial-plan authorization.

Important Files Changed

Filename Overview
Packages/Shared/CMUXMobileCore/Sources/CMUXMobileCore/CmxIrohPrivatePathSynthesizer.swift New synthesizer correctly extracts numeric Tailscale IPv4/IPv6 peers as fallback-only Iroh path hints; de-dup/refresh and capacity logic is sound.
ios/cmuxPackage/Sources/cmuxFeature/MobileIrohRouteCatalog.swift merged() now decorates personal+team routes for hint collection then takes prefix(personal.count); precondition guards count preservation; team Iroh routes intentionally receive no hints.
ios/cmuxPackage/Sources/cmuxFeature/MobileIrohNetworkPathState.swift snapshot() now computes Tailscale active status live via injected NetworkInterfaceAddressProviding; actor isolation is correct and the provider dependency is injectable for tests.
Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileShell/Sources/CmuxMobileShell/MobileShellComposite+ReconnectRoutes.swift storedReconnectRoutes now prepends addingIrohPrivatePaths before filtering; Tailscale hints are collected before the supportedKinds filter removes raw Tailscale routes.
Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileShell/Sources/CmuxMobileShell/MobileShellComposite.swift supportedRoutes(for:supportedKinds:) applies addingIrohPrivatePaths before sorting; one-line change with no side-effects on the Iroh-pinning logic downstream.
ios/cmuxPackage/Tests/cmuxFeatureTests/MobileIrohRuntimeCompositionTests.swift Adds MobileIrohInterfaceProvider test stub (correctly test-scoped), updates existing path-state tests to pass the stub, adds Tailscale activation coverage and dial-plan assertion for private fallback paths.

216-228: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔴 Critical | ⚡ Quick win

Use the decorated team routes instead of discarding them.

The logic applies addingIrohPrivatePaths to personal + team, which correctly generates decoratedRoutes. However, the loop then iterates over the original team array, causing any Tailscale path hints added to the team routes to be silently discarded.

To preserve the private-path decorations on team routes, use the suffix of decoratedRoutes.

🐛 Proposed fix
-        var routeIDs = Set(personal.map(\.id))
-        var peerIdentities = Set<CmxIrohPeerIdentity>(personal.compactMap { route in

+        var routeIDs = Set(personalWithPrivatePaths.map(\.id))

             guard case let .peer(identity, _) = route.endpoint else { return nil }
             return identity

-        for route in team {

                 continue
             }
