Chief Home gains a Work control showing its own subagents and harness background commands on this machine. Active work stays visible; finished commands fold into a count and expand for command/detail text. Loading, empty, partial and unavailable states remain distinct, and a failed refresh keeps the last verified snapshot.

Leo, verbatim (ask-1b0fa5bed7):

how about being able to see background tasks and subagents within the chief ui?

The Rust owner resolves the selected Chief’s configured identity and reads its acpmux family and process registry. Remote devices, unrelated pages and agent principals cannot use this private inventory. The interface explicitly says Background commands because this source excludes daemon background-task jobs; their person-proof boundary remains intact. There are no lifecycle actions or polling. Stale replies are ignored after close or Chief switch.

Design: leo-workspace/design/chief-work.md (merged notes PR #2847), mapped in .github/design-surfaces.json. Gallery pages.home-chief-work selects active, with phone, empty, loading, error, refreshing, partial and failed variants. Private reference IDs: claude/live/subagents-panel-running-waiting-done, claude/live/panel-context-and-background-tasks, claude/live/status-background-workflow-agent-progress, chatgpt/live/sidebar-session-info-rail-sections.

Validation for reviewed parent 8506f0f19d2f335005f83a5815a1aee673cc1aea and base-merge head 47a8b3a280a6a4bfb77662d8141bdb2019b34e48:

  • Claude Opus 5.5 medium carry SHIP at the new exact head confirms the base merge preserves the feature. Both 74-file feature diffs have stable patch-id 1ca6c53df2d99905ab4315c78dfd984de55723e4; the only overlapping file is capabilities.rs, where base adds an independent capability above the feature's hunk. Product components, styles and tests are unchanged.
  • Claude Opus 5.5 medium exact-head SHIP, with visual ACCEPT, plus primary integration review. The reviewer inspected the full feature diff, ownership and admission boundaries, lifecycle handling, generated contracts and product captures. The final delta supplies motion preferences before mounting fresh gallery frames and waits for the actual desktop composer/panel boundary before asserting it; product code is unchanged by that test-only delta.
  • Current-head CI run 41668124519 completed SUCCESS at 47a8b3a280a6a4bfb77662d8141bdb2019b34e48. The live job readback confirms all eight named web / react-apps-base-check (1..8) verdicts completed SUCCESS on this exact head.
  • Current-head focused Rust run 41678213705 completed SUCCESS: ten inventory tests, five page-admission tests and the actual owner/acpmux daemon smoke all pass. The readback contains the owned child “Build hello page” and running npm run dev, excluding unrelated work, over Unix and authenticated Channels WebSocket. The snapshot tree is the exact feature tree and the harness verified checkout preservation.
  • The Clippy context's only red is the panic ratchet for unchanged acpmux: indexing/slicing count 703 versus the committed baseline 686. The same focused run uses the existing --compare-base mode and positively reproduces 703 on exact base a8aa75879e24cab66539d79260362fcbf1ab1a52; it judges the result as a base warning. Normal all-target Clippy passed.
  • Reviewed-parent CI run 41652984932 completed SUCCESS. All eight named web / react-apps-base-check (1..8) verdicts are finished and green, including the committed phone/desktop browser cases under normal and reduced motion and the shared-spinner contract.
  • Rust run 41639973167 passed API compatibility, 10 inventory tests, five page-admission tests and an actual owner/acpmux daemon smoke. Readback contains the owned child “Build hello page” and running npm run dev, excluding unrelated work, over Unix and authenticated Channels WebSocket. The entire cmux-tui subtree is identical in the reviewed parent. The subsequent base merge changes that subtree through unrelated base commits; the feature patch and its inventory/admission files remain unchanged, as independently checked in the carry review.
  • Generated SDK check and git diff --check pass. Phone and desktop captures were visually inspected; the normal and reduced-motion Home variants preserve the layout. The last product change uses the existing shared Spinner and removes the custom spinner styles.
  • The reviewed-parent gallery-health failure is an existing base flake tracked in #32359. A same-worker replay of the recorded CI merge and exact base 8100c5157e78c5f79889e8594e91ee183aab92b8 reproduces agent-pane.new-tab#suggestions-session on base pass 2: shift 0.01916 versus baseline 0.01139, with the same 28px row movement while typing app-efficiency. The targeted head passes. Checker hashes, manifests and the New Tab source match; independent primary inspection confirms this attribution. The replay command's generic classifier returns “not a gallery red” for its now-green head; its raw base artifact supplies the positive reproduction.

Follow-ups: #33724 adds daemon-job coverage through its existing permission boundary; #33747 covers pagination and peer-copy edge cases; #33748 retains active commands in a full history; #33855 stabilizes the phone scope caption during first load. #34005 bounds concurrent owner inventory reads; #34006 matches native disclosure chevrons to Home styling. These are nonblocking follow-ups in new behavior, with no existing behavior regressed.

After, 2x captures of the reviewed feature at 8506f0f (the subsequent base merge preserves its components and styles):

Phone, light Phone, dark
Chief Work panel on a phone in light mode Chief Work panel on a phone in dark mode

Chief Work opened from the phone conversation

Chief Work beside its conversation on desktop

The feature stays together so the UI ships with its scoped owner and protocol contract. Most changed lines are generated SDKs and the 14 new keys in 21 locales; existing catalog values are preserved. The endpoint has a shared 15-second deadline. The page adds no timers or observers; its working spinner obeys the motion gate and disappears with its row or panel.

Independent review at 0efedb95ba3d9410d0706250379e17677f828be6 returned SHIP (Codex gpt-6.1-sol xhigh). The review completed after a test-only commit moved the head, so the final head is being reviewed separately.

Follow-ups identified:

  1. Use stable local session pagination; mutable updated-time order can omit a session changed between pages.
  2. Preserve running commands before the bounded history cap; old finished commands can otherwise fill it.
  3. Attach the phone and desktop captures once the fleet browser run returns them.

No blocking finding was reported. Visual verdict at that review: no images available.

Review (codex, router-review): SHIP at 1395e4f

Reviewer: codex gpt-6-astra high, fast tier.

Follow-ups: 3. Each lands as an issue in this repo that links this receipt; the lane that opened the PR fixes it forward.

SHIP at 1395e4f

Visual verdict: no images; Leo tries the build

  1. [P2] [follow-up] cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui-core/src/server/chief_work.rs:187: Preserve the peer exclusion when selecting rows. family() excludes peers, but this filter re-admits any peer row sharing an owned session ID. Acpmux preserves those IDs across peer copies, producing duplicate agents, conflicting states, and repeated local command reads. Request localOnly: true and retain the peer filter here.

  2. [P2] [follow-up] cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui-core/src/server/chief_work.rs:224: Reserve capacity for running commands before truncating history. Process pages are oldest-first; 500 finished commands in one session hide its newer running command and prevent reading subsequent sessions. Sorting the returned rows cannot recover omitted work. Keep this covered by the existing large-history follow-up.

  3. [P2] [follow-up] webviews/src/pages/home-channels/ChiefWorkPanel.tsx:45: Supply desktop and phone after screenshots for visual comparison; none were available.

Follow-ups:

  • Exclude peer copies throughout inventory selection.
  • Preserve running commands when history exceeds the limit.
  • Capture desktop and phone screenshots.

Review (claude claude-opus-5-5 medium): SHIP at 8506f0f

Independent review of the merge-base diff (2b903b0..8506f0f), read from the mirror. This is not a carry of the Codex verdict.

Visual verdict: accept. The Work sheet in the desktop light and phone dark product captures fits next to ChatGPT or Claude: a plain header with Refresh and close, grouped Subagents and Background commands, finished commands folded under a count, and a spinner (not a pulse) for working. It does not open with a fade. The toggle shows only for a local Chief.

What I checked

  • chief_work.rs admission: it is refused for remote clients, non-user_local principals and bound agents. On WebSocket it uses the Chief registry's person_page, so it is refused for other pages and pairing credentials. The person_page extraction from chief_registry_resource::caller keeps its behavior (that caller already refused remote clients first). The Chief id must exist in the store. The home is resolved from the configured root, and a named home must carry a matching chief-id. Nothing is taken from JS paths or session ids.
  • Ownership: home_id matches optchat-chief paths::home_id (pinned optchat/home-id, else path FNV-1a), and cmux.chief/mux.parent=optchat-chief:<id> match agents::owned_by/parent_tag. Peers and other-Chief tags are excluded. Descendants are walked breadth-first with the visited set, so a cycle is safe.
  • Bounds and truthfulness: there is one shared 15s deadline. A repeated or empty cursor, a malformed page or a mismatched sessionId row returns an error, never a partial success. truncated only reflects the 200/500 caps. Tests cover these cases.
  • Frontend: ChiefWorkStore fences late replies with a generation counter on select/close/stop. A failed refresh keeps the stale snapshot. The pane hides the previous Chief's rows during the hand-off. There is no polling. Escape and mutual exclusion with Run and Thread are wired into HomeChannelsPage.
  • Generated/locale bulk: there are 14 new work.* keys, each with 21 localizations, and no existing key changed. work.waiting, run.status.* and chief.working/chief.idle already exist. The SDK/schema/spec additions match the chief-work doc in commands.md. Generated parity relies on the green CI run at this head.

Findings (none blocking)

Review (claude opus-5.5 medium): SHIP at 8506f0f

Visual verdict: SHIP. Desktop and phone captures read cleanly next to Claude's subagent panel: quiet grouped rows, state on the right, finished commands folded, and the panel takes the right side without covering the conversation.

Checked: chief_work.rs (admission through the shared person_page, which is an equivalent refactor of the registry gate; Chief resolution from the daemon's own store and chief-id; family/peer filtering; pagination, cursor-loop and deadline handling; strict per-session process rows), the dispatch/hello wiring, and the page side (ChiefWorkStore generation guard on close/switch, the pane hand-off, Escape order, web-swap hold, capability gating). Nothing here changes existing behaviour outside the new control. Localizable adds keys only, and the SDK files are generated.

Coordinator note for this PR's lane: the Claude Opus 5.5 medium review you asked for is already posted at the exact head. It is a SHIP at 8506f0f (#33682 (comment)). The reviewer session you started on the lane VM is now redundant; stop it if it is still running. Review (claude claude-opus-5-5 medium): SHIP at 47a8b3a

This is a carry review after a GitHub web-flow base merge (Merge branch 'feat-cmux-next' into lane/chief-work-panel, author cmux-bot, committer GitHub). The owner pushed no new source. The full feature review at first parent 8506f0f19d2f335005f83a5815a1aee673cc1aea is the earlier Claude Opus 5.5 medium review: #33682 (comment). I checked that the base merge is source-neutral before carrying it.

What I checked, from the mirror (no checkout, no test runs):

  • Parents: first parent 8506f0f, second parent a8aa7587 (feat-cmux-next). The new merge base is a8aa7587; the old one was 2b903b0d. There are 143 base commits between them.
  • Feature diff is the same. git diff 2b903b0d 8506f0f and git diff a8aa7587 47a8b3a both cover the same 74 files (+6605/−193) with identical name-status. Their stable patch-ids match. With index lines removed, the two diffs differ in exactly one line: a hunk header offset in server/capabilities.rs (@@ -108 became @@ -109). That offset comes from the base adding one line above the hunk.
  • The merge resolved nothing by hand: git show --remerge-diff 47a8b3a is empty, so there was no conflict.
  • Where base and feature meet:
    • capabilities.rs is the only file both sides touched. The base added AGENT_SESSION_CONTENT_CAPABILITY in the agent-session-attach block, which is separate from the feature's chief-work-v1 push.
    • The base did not touch cmux-tui/spec, the SDK bindings, server.rs, command_dispatch, client_hello, connection_frame, chief_registry_resource or the locales. The generated SDK and inventory therefore still match their schema as reviewed.
    • In chief_brains.rs, the base changed only the supervisor's idle deadline (it ignores brains that are still typing) and added a test. configured_home() and brain_home(), which chief_work::target uses, are unchanged.
    • In home-channels, Home and New Tab: rows on the layout grid and type tokens #33750 moved ledger.css and styles.css from px values to --ds-* tokens. The selectors the Work pane reuses (.lg-main, .lg-sheet, .lg-stage) and the variables --lg-line and --lg-sheet are all still defined, with the same counts as before. So the Work pane's integration is unchanged except for those tokenized spacing values.
  • The feature code still reads correctly at the new head. In chief_work.rs I re-read the admission check (reader: local person only; Unix socket, or WebSocket that passes person_page), the configured-home resolution (no paths or session ids from the caller, and named homes are checked against chief-id), and the 15s shared deadline in inventory.

Verdict: the base integration changes none of the feature's behaviour, so the earlier Claude SHIP carries to this head. The final CI run cited for the first parent (run 41652984932) is that parent's receipt only. It is not evidence for this head. The owner is tracking the exact-head webview verdict separately, and this receipt makes no claim about it.

Visual verdict: unchanged by this merge. The Work pane's own CSS and components are byte-identical to the reviewed parent. The only nearby change is the base's token swap in the shared ledger styles, which these synthetic captures do not show. The earlier visual verdict on the PR-body captures stands: it would sit fine next to ChatGPT or Claude.

Findings: none new.

Follow-ups (already filed, none blocking): #34005 (bound on concurrent owner inventory reads), #34006 (disclosure chevron styling), #33724, #33747, #33748, #33855.
