feat(cloud): add read-only fork-candidate provenance and comparison receipts - #27402
Add a read-only, provider-neutral evidence contract for future parallel VM-fork candidates. This is the first bounded slice of HQ #5072 and #4864; Chief RunSpec ownership remains with #2358.
ForkSourceEvidence records requested+observed full Git SHA, optional captured dirty-tree digest, image/setup/checkpoint/input/context digests and context coverage.
compareForkCandidateReceipts refuses to call different start states/test suites comparable; reports missing test/review/artifact/identity evidence; requires independent reviewer identity; reports missing cost as unknown instead of zero.
Pure functions only: no VM allocation, credentials, backend routes, fork activation, winner promotion or change to existing Cloud behavior. Producer-side verification and persisted RunSpec receipts are follow-up work.
Testing
tsc --noEmit --target ES2022 --module nodenext --moduleResolution nodenext --strict --skipLibCheck web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts — passed against the standalone module.
The eight bun:test cases were run against Node 22's built-in test runner using a temporary assertion shim (8/8 passed). The repository's Bun suite/CI has not run locally because Bun is unavailable here; PR checks should run the authoritative tests.
Review notes
This is intentionally a contract, not a security guarantee; workers must attest the fields from the actual guest and avoid accepting candidate-provided receipts as trusted facts.
Compare permits missing cost as an explicitly flagged limitation; promotion policy must require the appropriate cost evidence if hard all-in spend admission is claimed.
Please review whether the existing RunSpec schema already has canonical field names to reuse before integrating producers.

Summary by cubic
Adds a provider-neutral evidence contract for future parallel VM-fork comparisons. This first slice is pure and read-only: it never allocates VMs, reads credentials, or changes existing Cloud behavior.
ForkSourceEvidence captures requested and observed Git SHAs, optional dirty-worktree digest, image/setup/input/context digests, and context coverage.
forkExperimentBranch generates deterministic Git-safe refs like cmux/exp/<run>/<variant>-a<N>.
compareForkCandidateReceipts flags missing or duplicated identities, unverified inputs, incomplete context, skipped tests, non-independent reviews, and unknown costs. Costs are never treated as zero.
Tests cover the comparison logic and branch-name validation.
Written for commit e2d2e9d. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added comparison of VM fork candidate results, including checks for matching starting inputs and test suites, evidence completeness, and independent reviews.
Comparisons now report whether cost data is complete, partial, or unknown, and identify when candidate results are not comparable.
Added consistent experiment branch naming with validation for run, variant, and attempt values.
Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.
CI fast guards passes on 26d23ea6ee (run). This covers only the fast guards, not CI: CI's result is ci-status.
Adds VM fork candidate receipt types and comparison logic. The comparison validates evidence, identifies differing source or test-suite inputs, classifies cost coverage, and reports a result. The change also adds deterministic experiment branch naming and tests for comparison outcomes and invalid branch inputs.

Summary
Receipt contracts and branch names web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts, web/tests/vm-fork-candidate-receipts.test.ts
Adds source evidence, candidate receipt, and comparison types. Adds branch naming that validates run and variant IDs and requires a positive safe-integer attempt number.
Receipt validation and comparison web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts, web/tests/vm-fork-candidate-receipts.test.ts
Validates candidate evidence and compares source fields and test-suite digests. Classifies cost coverage and determines comparison status. Tests cover matching and differing inputs, incomplete evidence, cost coverage, and insufficient candidates.
The receipt contract needs a complexity reduction before merging. Equivalent test-suite digests with different casing also incorrectly report different inputs. Existing Cloud behavior is unaffected by these isolated additions.

Explanation
PASS: The PR changes only a new pure receipt-comparison module and its tests. The diff adds no Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui client, physical transport, renderer readiness gate, input routing, snapshot path, authentication, idempotency, revision fence, or lease behavior. The custom check is therefore not triggered.
Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation
Explanation
The pull request changes only two TypeScript files: web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and its Bun test. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files, so it introduces no Swift 6 actor-isolation issue.
Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
The pull request changes only web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and its test. It does not modify Sources/TerminalController.swift or ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift, and the changed diff contains no browser, WebKit, AppKit, main-actor, or socket-worker automation code. The browser automation rule is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

The pull request adds only TypeScript files: web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and its test. The authoritative diff contains no Swift changes and no synchronous agent-history load, main-actor load, or interactive Swift call-site change.
Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness
Explanation
PASS. The PR adds a new pure receipt type and comparison module. The diff contains no cache, authoritative-read, persistence, history, undo, or snapshot substitution. The only usage is the new test file, so cold-cache and stale-cache handling do not apply.
Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps
Explanation
PASS. The PR adds pure receipt comparison logic and deterministic branch naming, plus tests. The authoritative diff contains no sleep, timer, polling, fixed-delay, backoff, or wall-clock synchronization code. No production lifecycle race is introduced.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
PASS. The production function in web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts:91-148 makes one linear pass over receipts. Its inner loops scan only fixed-size field lists (4 identity fields and 10 source fields), not the receipt collection. The cost checks at lines 154-156 add only constant-count linear passes. The implementation is therefore O(n) for the receipt collection and introduces no nested full-collection scan, per-target rescan, sorting/filtering hot path, or in-memory join.
Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency
Explanation
The pull request changes only two TypeScript files: web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and its test. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files, so it does not introduce or expand Swift legacy async patterns.
Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`
Explanation
The pull request changes only two TypeScript files. It introduces no Swift files, Swift async functions, or Swift call sites, so the .github/review-bot-rules/swift-concurrent-annotation.md conditions do not apply.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
The pull request changes only two TypeScript files: web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and its test. It does not change SwiftPM packages, Package.resolved, Xcode projects, .gitignore, workflows, or dependencies. The SwiftPM lockfile policy is not applicable.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
The diff adds a pure receipt module and tests only. The two new thrown errors contain generic validation text and no secrets, identifiers, payloads, provider names, or raw upstream messages. Repository search found no non-test consumer, route, CLI path, or UI path that could send these values to a cmux end user. The changed test strings are explicitly allowed.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
The diff adds only a provider-neutral service contract and its tests. It adds no web UI, metadata, API response, rendered markdown, changelog, or user-facing data integration. The only new text is in developer comments, validation errors, and comparison reason tokens within an unused pure module. No localization entry is required by this check.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
The authoritative pull-request diff adds only web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and web/tests/vm-fork-candidate-receipts.test.ts, with no Swift files or SwiftUI code. Therefore none of the SwiftUI state-layout failure conditions apply.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only two TypeScript files: web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and web/tests/vm-fork-candidate-receipts.test.ts. It introduces no Swift architecture changes, timing repairs, extra state owners, duplicate UI wiring, or split SwiftUI/AppKit lifecycle ownership.
Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts
Explanation
The pull request changes only web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and web/tests/vm-fork-candidate-receipts.test.ts. It adds no Swift code and does not add or change cmux-owned windows, so the auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule does not apply.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
The PR adds only two intentional hand-written files: web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and its test file. The diff contains source types, pure functions, and tests. It adds no logs, screenshots, recordings, temporary folders, caches, build output, dependency checkouts, or broad artifact directories.
Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source
Explanation
The pull request changes only web/services/vms/forkCandidateReceipts.ts and web/tests/vm-fork-candidate-receipts.test.ts. It contains no Swift files and no production Sources/ path changes, so the specified Swift test/debug seam conditions do not apply.

The current test also changes observedSha, so different-inputs can come from the cross-candidate comparison. Add a case where both otherwise matching candidates use contextCoverage: "truncated" and assert incomplete-evidence with context coverage is incomplete. This protects the incomplete-context check without duplicating the existing mixed-fault coverage.
Suggested test

Add a test near the existing truncated-context case for two otherwise matching
candidates whose contextCoverage is “truncated”; assert
compareForkCandidateReceipts returns incomplete-evidence and reports “context
coverage is incomplete,” without changing observedSha or adding other faults.
Split the review-validation assertions into separate tests.
The combined test can pass without review validation because skipped checks and an invalid artifact digest each produce incomplete-evidence. Keep a separate valid-review test that asserts both reasons.

Orphaned: no activity for 20 h, and no lane holds a lease on it. Adopted by the orphan sweep: merged main in at 26d23ea. A later pass queues it for the merge hub if it is reviewed, small and red only on base reds.
Suggested future producer contract, while preserving this PR's scope: link each candidate receipt to (a) one user-consented stable-ID journey digest and exact step/assertion coverage, (b) observed base failure and candidate pass, (c) identical owner/repo/source inputs or explicit expected candidate revision, dirty-tree/env/fixture/localhost origin, (d) actual isolated runner identity/proof and side-effect/effect budget, and (e) the current worktree CAS generation at Keep, rather than assuming comparison is safe for application. Missing cost stays unknown; mismatched input/fixture cannot be called green. If replay was skipped, status is unknown, even when a candidate's own tests pass.
Important security limitation exposed by the synthetic model: its producer: independent-runner string is easy to forge. Model unit tests only enforce declared-field logic, so production must fetch/server-sign the runner's observed facts and enforce isolation outside agent-controlled JSON. This is a proposed consumer/producer integration seam, no change requested to this PR's current read-only comparator, no Cloud runtime attempted, and no blocker or merge instruction. Owning #5846 finding.
Concrete producer-side finding, follow-up to my brief-32 comment; advisory only, no change requested to this read-only comparator.
The standalone Proof Loop Chromium runner originally accepted candidate Dark text as a green assertion when CSS hid it (display:none, opacity:0, or outside viewport): three reproducible false greens against a real browser DOM. This is the exact risk in treating a candidate/agent-supplied afterPassed receipt as sufficient to accept a fork winner. Regression suite now has 17 Chromium cases and visible-state checks; before/after evidence requires a visibly rendered red then green after a bounded 250 ms window. The research receipt remains keepAllowed:false with explicitly unattested producer identity and offline simulated Reload. Full owning HQ evidence.
Integration suggestion for future producer work: distinguish assertionTextMatched from assertionVisible, store an observed failure reason, exact source/fixture/runner identity and attempt evidence. Fail closed on missing visual outcome, and require authenticated replay plus worktree CAS before promoting a candidate. This does not establish a security guarantee from our DOM heuristic, and it does not block or alter #27402's current read-only comparison contract.
A candidate that hardcodes a successful final UI string instead of implementing persistence previously received a green observed receipt. A second, different Light → Save → Reload outcome, required after the Dark acceptance sequence, catches it. new WebSocket(...) and window.open(...) also produced green because the prior route caught HTTP only; CDP WebSocket and popup/worker monitoring now marks these attempts and refuses green. Real browser network isolation is still unverified: this environment blocks localhost HTTP at navigation and uses an offline replacement/storage shim. 21 browser regressions plus 12 receipt-readback tamper cases passed. The new auditor recomputes source/journey/screenshot hashes and outcome semantics but cannot attest independent producer identity or an OS sandbox; keepAllowed always stays false.
Possible future owner-approved seam: an authoritative fork candidate receipt should bind at least one disconfirming/contrasting acceptance control, observed full step coverage, actual runner identity/egress policy, and independently verifiable artifacts. Keep the current comparator pure/read-only; the new checks belong in a producer and signed execution envelope, with separate owner-CAS if ever applied. No code, review verdict or merge request against this PR.
Research-only producer/verifier contract finding (HQ #6236 brief 32). On HQ draft PR #6648, exact head a4ff075d1015845c14a29101b111e76e5c3c8ca1, I demonstrated that a purely SHA-256–backed red→green receipt could be recreated with forged candidate screenshot bytes and new matching hashes; the existing unsigned readback auditor returned zero problems. The immediate identical-before/after screenshot contradiction is now detected, while other regenerated screenshots can still pass unsigned self-consistency.
I prototyped a detached, review-only Ed25519 evidence envelope, challenged by a reviewer-held 256-bit nonce with 15-minute expiry, pinned verifier key, exact repo + caller-supplied full SHA IDs, source hashes, journey digest and manifest of the receipt plus six PNGs; optional SQLite consumption rejects nonce replay. Source, alternative analysis and reproduction. 23 signing tests + 14 audit tests passed (37/37), with disposable keys and no remote runner.
Implication for this PR: leave its read-only, provider-neutral comparator intact. Its candidate-provided facts and hashes should remain evidence, never trusted runner attestations. A future producer must bind actual execution + source identity to an independently controlled signer. Prefer investigating existing GitHub Actions artifact attestation verification (pin the workflow/repository signer identity and predicate) instead of expanding custom key custody. SLSA's provenance distinction emphasizes that signed artifact bytes and protected execution are different guarantees.
The research signer itself is ordinary Python and does not prove real isolated runner identity, actual Git checkout-to-commit binding or valid screenshot content. It always says keepAllowed:false; there was no production change, account/Cloud use, owner branch write, permission or merge. Primary HQ result. Nonblocking input for owner future design.
Classic auto-deploy audit (Leo, 2026-11-04: "apparently the api if we change it it'll auto deploy so we wanna make extra sure we dont change it for clasisc"): this PR adds new behaviour to classic's web/ API, which ships to cmux.com production when it merges to main. Since 2026-11-04 no new work goes into classic. If customers need it, add a Classic API change: <reason> line; otherwise the owner closes it with a comment and the work moves to manaflow-ai/cmux-platform. Once #35081 lands, the classic-api-guard check fails this PR until one of those happens.

Summary
Add a read-only, provider-neutral evidence contract for future parallel VM-fork candidates. This is the first bounded slice of HQ #5072 and #4864; Chief RunSpec ownership remains with #2358.

Adds a provider-neutral evidence contract for future parallel VM-fork comparisons. This first slice is pure and read-only: it never allocates VMs, reads credentials, or changes existing Cloud behavior.
ForkSourceEvidencecaptures requested and observed Git SHAs, optional dirty-worktree digest, image/setup/input/context digests, and context coverage.forkExperimentBranchgenerates deterministic Git-safe refs likecmux/exp/<run>/<variant>-a<N>.compareForkCandidateReceiptsflags missing or duplicated identities, unverified inputs, incomplete context, skipped tests, non-independent reviews, and unknown costs. Costs are never treated as zero.Tests cover the comparison logic and branch-name validation.
