Summary

The default terminal sizing policy is now iPhone First. While a paired iPhone or iPad shows a terminal, the terminal takes the phone's full size. When the phone leaves the terminal, goes to the background or disconnects, the size returns to the Mac (Fit everyone over whoever is left).

  • TerminalSizingPolicy gains handheld_first. While a phone or tablet counts, the most recently active one sets the whole grid; mode applies when none is attached; a fixed grid still wins. Same change in the Swift engine (Packages/Shared/CmuxTerminalSizing) and its Rust twin (cmux-tui-core/src/sizing_policy.rs), with 7 new cases in schemas/terminal-sizing/fixtures.json.
  • Default policy is {"mode":"smallest","handheld_first":true}. A policy stored or sent without the key reads it as false, so an existing explicit choice behaves as before. No migration of stored values is needed.
  • iPhone: Hand Off Terminal Sizing When Inactive (Fix iOS terminal sizing priority across background resume #18641) now defaults to on, so a backgrounded phone returns the grid. A stored choice is kept. This reverses Fix iOS terminal sizing priority across background resume #18641's default on purpose; the cost is one resize when the phone comes back.
  • Size pickers on the iPhone sheet and the Mac panel list iPhone first above the five modes. Picking a mode, or Size to My Window on a Mac, turns it off. CLI: cmux surface size-policy iphone-first; socket terminal.size_policy.set accepts handheld_first.
  • Contract doc, SDK schema and regenerated bindings updated (additive field, same path device_id took in Draw shared sizing bounds in the divider color; add Connected Devices… on iOS #15883).

Testing

Regression first: 2faf7a8a adds the failing tests, later commits fix them.

Command Base (2faf7a8a) Head
cmux-ci run … run-swift-testing-suites.sh --arg Packages/Shared/CmuxTerminalSizing fail, 20 issues pass
cmux-ci run … run-swift-testing-suites.sh --arg Packages/macOS/CmuxTerminalSharing fail, 3 issues pass
verify-cmux-tui-hosted.sh --filter sizing_policy (run 40816528709) n/a Linux lint + test pass (4 sizing tests incl. fixture replay); macOS jobs queued at time of writing
check-sdk-schema.py, bindings/generate.sh --check, localization_catalog.py check n/a pass

Observed / Not run

Observed on tag phfrst (fleet-built Mac + iOS from 23395b7c, behavior-identical to head), isolated iPhone 17 simulator paired over the real link:

  • Phone opens terminal: 94×38 (Mac) → 66×45, owner iPhone; Mac pane font-fits 45 rows with the "66×45 · cmux's iPhone" chip.
  • Home Screen → 94×38, phone dropped. Foreground → 66×45. Back to list → 94×38.
  • Fit everyone (main's default) on the same build: 66×38, phone letterboxed. Follow latest: phone becomes [viewer], Mac keeps 94×38.
  • Phone size sheet lists "iPhone first" first; choosing it switches the Mac host.

Not run: Mac size panel picker screenshot (opens only via palette/shortcut, which needs focus); CmuxMobileShellUI package tests on the fleet (runner lacks GhosttyKit; covered by this PR's iOS CI); real iPhone. The Bonsplit tab context menu and the cmux-tui menu still list only the five modes.

Proof report (local, self-contained HTML with screenshots and video): artifacts/iphone-first-sizing/report.html in cmuxterm-hq.

HIG

The picker entry reuses the existing SwiftUI menu Picker; no new component. I did not fetch the HIG page for pop-up buttons this pass.

Changelog

Changed: An iPhone or iPad viewing a shared terminal now sets its size by default, and the Mac takes it back when the phone leaves the terminal or goes to the background.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an “iPhone First” terminal sizing policy. When enabled, an active phone or tablet can set the shared terminal size; fixed sizing remains in effect when selected.
    • Added “iPhone First” to the sizing controls and CLI policy options, with localized labels.
  • Changes
    • The default sizing policy now prioritizes an active handheld device, and inactive-terminal handoff is enabled by default.
    • Existing policies without the new option retain their previous behavior; choosing another sizing mode turns off “iPhone First.”

Adds handheld-first conformance fixtures and a Mac host test for the new
default. Both fail on main, where the default is Fit everyone.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
While a paired phone or tablet views a terminal, it sets the whole grid;
when it leaves the terminal or backgrounds, the grid returns to Fit
everyone. A new handheld_first policy flag carries this in both sizing
engines (Swift and the cmux-tui Rust twin). The engine default turns it
on; a policy stored or sent without the flag keeps its explicit mode.
Size panels on the Mac and iPhone list iPhone First above the modes;
picking a mode or Size to My Window on a Mac turns it off. The CLI gains
size-policy iphone-first and the socket accepts handheld_first.

Correctness review (subagent), findings and resolution

Reviewed origin/main...11883e86 read-only. Swift and Rust engines match line for line; decoders tolerate the new key; dropped-handheld_first call sites are all intended (a user picking a mode, Size to My Window from a Mac/TUI) or preserve it.

# Severity Finding Resolution
1 High Hand Off Terminal Sizing When Inactive (#18641) defaulted off, so a backgrounded phone kept its viewport lease and, under iPhone First, the whole grid until the connection dropped. Fixed in 5a55130 (test) / 23395b7 (fix): the setting now defaults on; a stored choice either way is kept. This reverses #18641's default on purpose: the ask is that the Mac gets the grid back when the phone goes inactive. Trade-off: one resize when the phone returns to the foreground.
2 Medium When the terminal view leaves its window without being torn down (a pushed screen over it), the lease is kept. Not changed. Releasing on window detach is what #18641 and TerminalSurfaceMountOwnershipTests guard against (clear→apply resize flaps during remounts). Closing the terminal (dismantle) still releases. Checked live in the simulator run.
3 Low-Med cmux-tui menu has no iPhone First entry; doc claimed "size panels". Doc now says the Mac and iPhone panels list it; the TUI menu lists only the modes. Follow-up if wanted.
4 Low-Med Released strict SDK decoders (Python, additional_properties: false) raise on an unknown handheld_first in size-state. Same path device_id took in #15883 (added to the sizing schema without a protocol bump). Noted; bindings in this PR are regenerated.
5 Low Picking iPhone First against an old Mac/daemon snaps back to Fit everyone; an old iPhone can't turn it off without picking another mode first. Accepted for a mixed-version window; no crash.

Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.

CI fast guards failed on 0d482c69c4 (https://github.com/manaflow-ai/cmux/actions/runs/40816516118). It does not block the merge; a red guard merged into main breaks it for every open PR.

Walkthrough

The change adds an “iPhone First” sizing choice. When enabled, the newest counting handheld can own the terminal grid, while fixed sizing remains in effect. The policy is exposed through the CLI, protocol, and Mac and iOS sizing controls, with defaults, localization, and tests updated.

Changes: Handheld-first terminal sizing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Policy model and sizing selection
Packages/Shared/CmuxTerminalSizing/Sources/CmuxTerminalSizing/*, Packages/Shared/CmuxTerminalSizing/Tests/CmuxTerminalSizingTests/*, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui-core/src/sizing_policy.rs, schemas/terminal-sizing/fixtures.json
The Swift and Rust policies add handheld_first. Their default policies enable it, while decoding policies without the field leaves it off. When enabled, the newest counting handheld supplies the grid unless fixed sizing applies. Tests and fixtures cover selection and compatibility behavior.
Policy protocol and command interfaces
CLI/*, Sources/TerminalController+SharedSizing.swift, cmux-tui/spec/*, cmux-tui/bindings/{cpp,go,java}/..., docs/shared-terminal-sizing.md
CLI and socket interfaces accept or preserve the setting. The protocol schema and generated Go and Java bindings add the field; SDK hashes and manifests are updated. The documentation describes policy precedence and defaults.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is mostly complete. It explains the behavior, implementation scope, compatibility details, testing results, observed and unverified cases, proof artifact, and changelog entry. It does not include the template's explicit Proof and Checklist headings, but the related information is substantially present.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

PASS: The reviewed diff changes terminal sizing policy behavior, iOS handoff defaults, UI/CLI surfaces, schemas, bindings, and sizing fixtures. It does not change Cloud terminal creation, persistent cmux-tui transport, manual renderer admission, Ghostty startup, input routing, or auth/idempotency/revision/lease fences. The added handheld_first field is additive and does not match any stated failure condition.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

No changed Swift code introduces a new actor-isolation mistake. The shared sizing package uses Swift 6 without a MainActor default, and the changed TerminalSizingPolicy, new TerminalSizingChoice, and TerminalSizingEngine remain pure Sendable value types. MobileDisplaySettings and TerminalSharingStore are explicitly @MainActor; their changes stay within those boundaries. The picker changes are SwiftUI view code, and the iOS action closure and task use @MainActor. No new shared mutable Sendable reference type, async service protocol, or background access to a UI-bound store appears in the production diff.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS — The Swift production diff adds sizing-policy state, selection, and decoding logic only. It introduces no DispatchSemaphore, blocking wait, sleep, delayed dispatch, polling loop, main-queue sync, or manual lock. The only changed Swift test file is test-only, and no timing primitive was added there either.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes terminal sizing policy, UI, CLI, schemas, bindings, and localization. It does not change browser socket automation. The rule’s scoped files, Sources/TerminalController.swift and ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift, are unchanged, and no added or removed lines reference browser waits, WebKit, worker routing, or main-actor automation.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

The pull request changes terminal sizing policy, UI pickers, settings defaults, socket serialization, and generated bindings. The changed Swift diff adds no agent-history loads, transcript or trajectory parsing, JSONL/workstream scans, broad directory scans, per-record syscalls, or large JSON parsing. It also adds no such work to SwiftUI bodies, didSet handlers, menu or command evaluation, shortcut paths, window close paths, or socket handlers. Therefore it does not match the explicit failure condition.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

No cache substitution failure is introduced. The Swift changes add terminal sizing policy behavior and picker handling. TerminalSharingStore.setChoice uses the same published snapshots path that the base setMode already used; it does not replace a fresh authoritative read. MobileDisplaySettings still reads UserDefaults directly, with only the default value changing to true. The TypeScript changes are generated schema/binding updates and contain no persistence, history, undo, or snapshot read path.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

The PR introduces no hacky sleeps or fixed timing synchronization. The only changed TypeScript files are generated SDK bindings, and the added diff contains no sleep, timer, polling, delay, retry, or timeout primitives. No JavaScript, shell, or build/runtime script files changed.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASS. The production changes add only linear scans over the attached terminal participants: Swift filters counting handhelds once and selects the newest entry; Rust uses one iterator filter and max. The picker uses a fixed five-mode list. No changed code adds nested per-target rescans, repeated sorting or filtering of workspace-scale records, in-memory joins, or a superlinear batch path. Existing scans in counts and priority handling are unchanged, and the new handheldFirst branch short-circuits them for handheld participants.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

The pull request adds terminal-sizing policy, picker, CLI, and localization logic, but it does not introduce or materially expand any prohibited Swift concurrency pattern. The only changed Swift async-looking code is an existing SwiftUI Task { @MainActor ... } helper in TerminalSizeSheet.swift, and the diff does not add a new task, queue, Combine state model, or completion-handler API. Existing callback and queue code in CLI/cmux.swift is unchanged. The changed code therefore passes the cmux Swift concurrency check.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

No Swift concurrency violation is introduced. The changed Swift sizing logic is synchronous. The PR adds no @concurrent, nonisolated async, or actor-isolation declaration. TerminalSizeSheet keeps its existing explicit Task { @MainActor in ... } bridge, and the policy update remains an existing @MainActor async action. No changed call site adds heavy async work without an actor hop.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

PASS: The independent sizing domain logic is implemented in the existing CmuxTerminalSizing SwiftPM target, with public policy/choice APIs and TerminalSizingEngine behavior changes covered by its package tests. Mac-specific store and host behavior remains in CmuxTerminalSharing, which is also a SwiftPM target with tests. App-root changes only adapt the existing socket/CLI paths and render SwiftUI picker labels and bindings, which are app integration and UI glue allowed by the rule.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

No SwiftPM or Xcode dependency change is present. The PR changes no Package.swift, Package.resolved, .gitignore, workflow, or cmux.xcodeproj path, and no package-local ignore rule contains Package.resolved. The changed files are sizing code, tests, documentation, and generated bindings, so the lockfile requirements are not triggered.

Full details: Cmux Swift Logging

Explanation

PASS. The reviewed Swift diff adds sizing-policy behavior, UI text, CLI options, and tests, but no new or materially changed print, debugPrint, dump, NSLog, file/stdout diagnostics, or Logger declarations. The only matching output calls are pre-existing CLI output, which the rule allows. The changed code also adds no logging of secrets or personal data.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

The changed user-facing paths are the product CLI and iOS/macOS sizing pickers. The CLI error and help text add only the safe product option iphone-first; picker labels add “iPhone First” translations. The socket setting name handheld_first is an explicitly documented advanced product configuration. Diff comparison confirms the localized usage strings add only iphone-first|. No changed production output exposes vendor names, provider internals, raw upstream errors, secrets, tokens, headers, session IDs, or payload dumps. Existing help text details remain unchanged.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

PASS. The SwiftUI diff only replaces sizing-mode values with TerminalSizingChoice in the existing iOS List picker and macOS panel picker. It adds no ObservableObject, @Published, @StateObject, @EnvironmentObject, GeometryReader, or render-time state writes. Existing @State, Task, and .onAppear code in TerminalSizeSheet is unchanged. Participant rows continue to receive value snapshots and action closures; the new ForEach iterates a finite picker enum and does not add a store-backed row subtree.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

PASS. The Swift diff adds no sleeps, delayed dispatch, polling, locks, notification waits, or new lifecycle observers. TerminalSizingPolicy.handheldFirst and TerminalSizingChoice.withChoice keep policy state and transitions in the shared sizing model. The iOS and macOS pickers use that shared transition, while each existing store remains the platform transport owner. The new inactive-handoff default changes an existing persisted setting and does not add a competing state owner.

Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts

Explanation

PASS. The reviewed Swift diff only changes terminal-sizing state and the existing iOS terminal size sheet and macOS terminal size panel pickers. It adds no standalone NSWindow, NSPanel, NSWindowController, SwiftUI Window, or WindowGroup. Sheets, panels, and views are exempt. The deterministic scripts/lint_auxiliary_window_close_shortcuts.py check is therefore not triggered by this diff.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

The changed-file inventory contains only product code, tests, docs, localization catalogs, the sizing fixture, and generated binding files under the repository's existing generated-source locations. No path matches the prohibited artifact directories or local-tool-output categories.

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

PASS: The changed Swift production files under **/Sources/** add no #if DEBUG or test-build guard, no debug/test-seam-named member, and no test-only accessor or visibility-plus-wrapper pattern. The new TerminalSizingChoice, withChoice, and setChoice APIs are product sizing APIs with production callers in the iOS and macOS UI paths. The added accessibility identifier is UI metadata, not an internal-state seam.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The PR introduces incomplete internationalization. Resources/Localizable.xcstrings supports 20 locales, but the changed cli.surface.usage entry and new terminalSharing.sizeMode.handheldFirst entry contain only 9 locales, omitting bs, da, it, km, nb, pl, pt-BR, ru, th, tr, and uk. The PR also changes the user-facing CLI error at CLI/CMUXCLI+SurfaceSizing.swift:33 without a localized API. The iOS catalog's new entry covers its 9 supported locales.

Resolution

Add translated entries for all 20 locales in the changed/new Resources/Localizable.xcstrings keys. Route the changed CLI error through String(localized:defaultValue:) or an equivalent catalog-backed API, and add matching translations. Keep protocol tokens such as iphone-first unchanged in every translation.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 38.89% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 18 functions across 25 files. (12 skipped: 10 unsupported, 2 too large.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Assert the full picker sequence in pickerListsHandheldFirstThenEveryMode.

The current picker list is correct. The test does not check that, though. It checks only the first entry and the total count. A list that repeats .mode(.latest) and omits .mode(.smallest) still has six entries and still starts with .handheldFirst, so the test passes while the test name's "every mode" requirement fails. Compare TerminalSizingChoice.allCases with the complete expected sequence so that a missing or duplicated mode fails the test.

Suggested fix
     @Test func pickerListsHandheldFirstThenEveryMode() {

Assert the restored grid after switching back to iPhone First.

This test checks only the policy after setChoice(.handheldFirst, ...). A regression that stores .standard without recomputing the grid can still pass. The same fixture gives a 90×50 grid, so the test can assert that size after line 103. No other test in Packages/ calls setChoice with .handheldFirst and checks the grid.

Suggested test assertion
         #expect(store.setChoice(.handheldFirst, surfaceID: id))
         #expect(store.snapshot(for: id)?.state.policy == .standard)
+        #expect(store.snapshot(for: id)?.state.size == TerminalGridSize(cols: 90, rows: 50))

⚠️ Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The new standard policy has mode smallest but enables handheld-first. The supplied TerminalSharingDisplay.tabPresence() still derives its Bonsplit menu mode solely from policy.mode, so that menu may present the default as Fit Everyone while a phone actually owns the whole grid.

The menu indicates an effective sizing choice different from the one controlling the terminal.

This can occur when: Open a terminal using the standard policy, attach a counting phone, and inspect the Bonsplit tab size menu.

Check the applied policy after terminal.size_policy.set for iphone-first.

When the CLI sends handheld_first, the command reports success even if the running app ignores the field. The app then applies mode=smallest without iPhone First, and the command output shows mode=smallest. Check size_state.policy.handheld_first in the response, and throw if it is not true.

Gate handheld_first in size-state payloads for clients that cannot decode it.

The in-repo Python SDK rejects unknown keys in SizePolicy. The head daemon always serializes handheld_first, so a Python client built from the base schema fails on this daemon in two places:

  • get-size-state results: the client raises ProtocolError("invalid get-size-state result: ...") (cmux-tui/bindings/python/cmux/raw/client.py:402-404). The daemon handler at cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui-core/src/server.rs:12407-12415 returns the state without a capability check.
  • size-state events: a decode failure raises ProtocolError and closes the stream (client.py:93-95, client.py:164-167). The daemon sends these events only to clients that advertise shared-sizing-v1 (server.rs:13835, server.rs:4555).

Regenerating the Python schema fixes only new SDK builds. Installed clients keep the strict schema.

Remedy: omit handheld_first from the wire policy object unless the client advertises a new capability, such as handheld-first-v1. Have the SDK send that capability only after its schema accepts the field. Apply the projection where the daemon builds each payload: the GetSizeState result, size_state_event_json, and the attach size_state response. Do not change the Serialize derive on TerminalSizingPolicy. That change would also alter the shape sent to capable clients. Add the new capability to advertised_capabilities in the same change that adds Python support.

Update the default-policy descriptions in cmux-tui/spec/commands.md to match the head default.

The spec gives two incompatible defaults. Line 2789 says the default policy has handheld_first set to true. Lines 141 and 2780 still say the default or fallback policy is latest. The head code uses the first description, so a client that follows lines 141 or 2780 gets the wrong owner rule.

Head code resolves an unset terminal policy to TerminalSizingPolicy::default(), which is Smallest with handheld_first: true. A client that follows line 141 or 2780 would expect the newest client to own the grid. The actual owner is the newest attached handheld, with smallest as the fallback when no handheld counts.

Change line 141 to describe the handheld-first default with smallest fallback. Change line 2780 so the fallback names that default instead of latest. Keep line 2789 unchanged, because it matches the code.

📝 Suggested spec edit

-`latest`. Every participant of an affected terminal receives `size-state`.

Add translations for the 11 missing locales to cli.surface.usage.

This PR changes the cli.surface.usage value to add the iphone-first size policy. The entry still has no values for bs, da, it, km, nb, pl, pt-BR, ru, th, tr, and uk. The full-internationalization rule requires translated values for every locale the catalog supports when an entry is materially changed. Add complete, non-placeholder translations for all 20 catalog locales to this entry.

Users in those 11 locales see the English usage text, not localized command help. This gap predates the PR. The PR's edit to the entry is what brings it under the rule.

Update the cli.surface.usage localization entry with complete, non-placeholder
values for all 20 catalog locales, including bs, da, it, km, nb, pl, pt-BR, ru,
th, tr, and uk. Preserve the usage content and command syntax in each
translation, including the iphone-first size policy.

Add translations for the 11 missing catalog locales to terminalSharing.sizeMode.handheldFirst.

The new terminalSharing.sizeMode.handheldFirst entry has translations for nine locales only: en, ar, de, es, fr, ja, ko, zh-Hans, and zh-Hant. The touched catalog defines 20 locales. Add translated values for uk, it, bs, nb, da, pl, pt-BR, ru, th, tr, and km. Use real translations, not English copies or placeholders. Until these entries exist, the "iPhone First" menu label can appear in English for those locales.

Review comment at @Resources/Localizable.xcstrings around lines 671655 - 671713:
In the terminalSharing.sizeMode.handheldFirst catalog entry, add translated
values for uk, it, bs, nb, da, pl, pt-BR, ru, th, tr, and km, matching the
existing localization structure and using genuine translations of “iPhone First”
rather than English copies or placeholders.
