Fixes #26640: guest DNS fallback for the platform resolver's SERVFAILs - #26661
New Cloud machines use a guest DNS stub on 127.0.0.2:53 over UDP and TCP. It asks the platform resolver first and preserves authoritative NXDOMAIN responses. On SERVFAIL, REFUSED, or timeout, it can return the last successful platform answer for that question. Resolver rewrites invalidate the cache and fence in-flight results, so an answer cannot survive a TLS routing change.
While TLS steering is active, cold misses return SERVFAIL. Freestyle exposes resolver IPs but no steered-name list to the guest, so substituting a public address could bypass routing or credential injection. DNS-over-HTTPS fallback is available only when steering is inactive. This means cached names survive brief platform outages; new names still depend on the platform while steering is enabled.
The stub tries IPv4 first, cancels timed-out queued work, and signals systemd readiness after binding both sockets. A path unit restores the stub after the platform rewrites resolv.conf. The image source fingerprint covers the resolver and its units.
The manifest promotes a real bake from ce47d83051fb49adbe44f5b28405b0a02b054290 for both desktop and base machines at all six sizes. Master: sh-ae52f310550b46bd8083c0cfb11b88a0. Each derived size was rebooted and checked. Shared snapshot pointers were left unchanged. Existing machines receive this through normal image replacement; this PR does not upgrade running guests.
Validation
Focused regression command, run remotely from web/: bun test tests/vm-devbox-dns.test.ts.
At b14bd068, the binary-record-type regression fails; the fix at 2d85f8cf passes.
At 8e1439ed, the resolver-rewrite regression fails because old platform/cache/DoH answers escape; 802c4bc4 passes all 25 DNS tests.
The initial base has no DNS fallback. The behavioral red/green evidence above uses the failing regression commits immediately before their repairs, rather than treating a missing export on main as proof of the symptom.
Observed / Not run
Remote DNS/image/desktop suite: 85 passed. Expanded final suite: 116 passed, with the unchanged agent PTY cancellation test timing out during guest login-shell startup. All 25 DNS tests, manifest tests, and network-policy tests passed. Manifest/source check and complexity gate passed separately. The agent-launch test and supervisor have no diff from main; hosted CI remains the final check for that environment.
Scoped ESLint: no errors, two existing unused-import warnings. Static checks passed, including a remote rerun of the feature flag check after it timed out on the overloaded Mac. Localization audit: zero changed keys or parity errors.
Canonical image bake and full verify-devbox-image.ts: all checks passed. Six-size derivation verified shape, identity, units, and daemon availability after reboot.
Fresh clone with a real TLS rule: resolver SHA256 matches the repaired source, systemd reports Type=notify, a cached steered answer works with external UDP/TCP port 53 dropped, an uncached lookup returns SERVFAIL, and DNS works after pause/resume. Disposable guests were deleted.
No new native app build: this repair changes guest code and image metadata. The runtime evidence is from the actual baked guest image. Hosted CI results are checked on the final pushed SHA.
Changelog
Fixed: New Cloud machines reuse cached platform DNS answers during brief resolver outages while preserving TLS routing.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Freestyle devboxes now include a DNS fallback that can help resolve domains when platform DNS responses are unavailable or incomplete.
DNS configuration is checked during image builds and verification.
Documentation
Updated devbox and network policy documentation to describe DNS-based domain steering. Devboxes baked before this change are not affected.
Behavioral tests for a guest stub resolver and resolv.conf guard: the
platform's answer wins, a SERVFAIL or silence falls back to the last good
platform answer and then DNS-over-HTTPS, never to a fallback NXDOMAIN.
Red on the base: the stub does not exist.

…26640)
Every cmux machine has TLS rules, so Freestyle points resolv.conf at its
forwarding resolver (10.32.0.28) and intercepts all guest port-53 traffic.
That forwarder intermittently answers SERVFAIL or nothing for every name on
every machine at once; changing resolv.conf cannot route around it, and the
guest agent rewrites the file on every TLS rule change and on resume.
Bake a stdlib-only stub (cmux-dns) on 127.0.0.2:53: platform resolver
first (steered names still resolve to the edge), then the last good
platform answer, then DNS-over-HTTPS to 1.1.1.1/8.8.8.8 by IP, accepting
only NOERROR. A path unit re-points resolv.conf at the stub whenever the
platform rewrites it, keeping the platform's resolvers after it.

Adds a DNS stub and resolver guard to Freestyle devbox images. The stub tries platform resolvers, uses cached platform answers, and can fall back to DNS-over-HTTPS. The image build installs and verifies the service. Resolver documentation now describes forwarding-resolver edge steering.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: a guest-side DNS fallback that answers when the platform resolver returns SERVFAIL. It also references issue #26640. The changeset adds the cmux-dns stub, its guard and systemd units, and the image wiring, which match the title's stated purpose.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections (Summary, Testing, Changelog, Proof, Checklist). The Summary explains the problem, the stub mechanism, and the TLS steering behavior, and it links the issue with Fixes #26640. The Testing section separates commands run from those not run and includes an Observed / Not run subsection. The Changelog has a user-facing line. The Proof section is missing: it gives no screenshot or one-line reason why none applies, although the template asks for one. The Checklist is not addressed, and the description does not say whether user-facing docs were updated, though the README change suggests they were.
Resolution
Optional: add a one-line Proof entry (for example, that the change is CI and image-only, so no screenshot applies). Mark the Checklist items as applicable or not, and state whether the localization audit and cmux-review steps were run.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #26640 asks for a root-cause fix or a reliable guest-side fallback for intermittent SERVFAIL from the platform resolver at 10.32.0.28. The coding requirement is the fallback. The reviewed head (8bd203b) provides it. Source read at head, web/services/vms/images/devbox/cmux-dns: serve listens on 127.0.0.2:53 over UDP and TCP. Resolver.resolve queries platform resolvers first, IPv4 first, with two tries inside a 3.5 s budget. NXDOMAIN is passed through as authoritative. On SERVFAIL, REFUSED, or silence, it returns the last usable platform answer for the same question. The cache is scoped to the resolv.conf generation (inode and mtime plus upstreams), and in-flight results are fenced by a generation check. The stale answer is limited to 24 h. On a cold miss with TLS steering active (platform_steering), it returns SERVFAIL. Otherwise it queries DoH at 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 by IP, accepting only NOERROR, and never returns NXDOMAIN on a platform failure. guard re-points resolv.conf at the stub and keeps platform resolvers after it. The README and verifier wiring cover the units and checks. Limits: (1) While steering is active, names never resolved before a platform outage still fail. The PR states this trade-off: the platform does not expose the steered-name list, so public DoH could bypass TLS routing. The issue does not state that new names must resolve in that case, so this is not counted as an unmet requirement. (2) The incremental diff since 2120cc6 was not readable in this pass. Changes since the prior review were checked only through the head source read and the whole-PR summary. (3) The upstream Freestyle report is non-coding and was not assessed. The live A/B and reboot measurements are PR-reported and were not rerun. (4) The objectives report that the manifest promotion was pending at 9723782. Promotion state at 8bd203b is not confirmed here. This affects delivery of the image, not the coding requirement.

Explanation
All changed areas support the DNS fallback for #26640. These are: the cmux-dns resolver, guard, and probe; the systemd units and install/check commands in devbox-image-common.ts; the bake wiring in build-devbox-freestyle.ts; verify-devbox-image.ts; the DNS test suite and the template-file inventory tests; the devbox README 'DNS fallback' section; and the freestyle.ts, freestyleNetworkPolicy.ts, and networkPolicy.ts comments that describe the platform steering behind the failure. The manifest change promotes the DNS-repaired image set as the delivery path for the fix, as the PR description states. The side effect on the prior sm-base default entry is a minor consequence of that promotion, not a demonstrated unrelated change. The merge of origin/main at 8bd203b brings in no PR-external file: mergeBase 877b6b4 is main's tip, so the #27152 commits are already in the base. The incremental diff since 2120cc6 was not read in full. The head state was checked through the source read and the whole-PR summary only.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only VM DNS, devbox image, network-policy documentation, and related tests. It does not modify the scoped browser automation files or add browser socket commands, WebKit/AppKit access, worker routing, or policy tests. The check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load
Explanation
PASS: The reviewed PR changes only TypeScript, Python, Markdown, and image-test files. It adds no Swift files and no diff references to the expensive synchronous-load identifiers or paths. The Swift-specific failure condition is not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness
Explanation
No changed Swift, JavaScript, or TypeScript path replaces a fresh persistence, history, undo, or snapshot read with an unchecked cache. The TypeScript changes only install and verify the DNS fallback. The DNS cache first queries the platform, clears on resolver-generation changes, expires entries after 24 hours, and has cold-cache fallbacks or SERVFAIL. Tests cover stale entries, resolver rewrites, and snapshot-resumed cache state.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
The pull request does not introduce a prohibited scalable scan. The new DNS resolver uses bounded work: two platform attempts, two fixed DoH endpoints, a cache capped at 8192 entries, and a 64-worker pool. Resolver configuration is a small system file; the code documents the two-upstream libc bound and sorts only that resolver list. The TypeScript loops cover the fixed DNS unit inventory, and manifest/template scans use fixed image metadata. Tests and documentation are excluded by the rule.
Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency
Explanation
The PR changes only TypeScript, Python, Markdown, and test files. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift concurrency constructs such as DispatchQueue, Combine app state, or fire-and-forget Swift Tasks. The Swift concurrency check is not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries
Explanation
The pull request changes TypeScript, Python, Markdown, and test files only. The authoritative diff contains no Swift source, Package.swift, or Swift package target changes. Therefore, the Swift package boundary rule does not apply.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
The reviewed diff changes only web Cloud DNS scripts, documentation, the cmux-dns asset, and tests. It contains no SwiftPM package, Package.swift, Package.resolved, Xcode project, .gitignore, workflow, or dependency changes. The SwiftPM lockfile policy therefore does not apply.
Full details: Cmux Swift Logging
Explanation
The pull request changes only web TypeScript, Markdown, a DNS script, and tests. It changes no Swift files and adds no Swift logging statements. The Swift logging rule therefore has no applicable violation.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
The production path is the guest cmux-dns DNS service. It returns DNS protocol responses such as SERVFAIL or validated DNS answers, but it does not expose provider names, raw HTTP errors, credentials, headers, tokens, or payload dumps. Provider references appear only in comments, documentation, image metadata, and build or verification commands. The guard and probe output is limited to internal image installation and diagnostics.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes guest-image DNS behavior, build scripts, tests, systemd configuration, developer comments, and the operational devbox README. It adds no Swift text, app catalogs, web UI copy, API responses, user-facing metadata, changelog, or locale/message files. The README is under web/services/vms/images/devbox/ and documents image operations, which the rule explicitly allows when not shown to end users. web/i18n/routing.ts and all locale message files remain unchanged.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
The pull request changes only TypeScript, Python-like DNS, Markdown, and test files. It adds no Swift or SwiftUI files and the diff contains no SwiftUI state, layout, or render-time mutation constructs. The SwiftUI-specific check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes TypeScript, Python, Markdown, and tests only. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift architecture changes, so the Swift-specific failure conditions do not apply.

The auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule and scripts/lint_auxiliary_window_close_shortcuts.py are not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
All changed paths are intentional product, build, documentation, or test sources. The new web/services/vms/images/devbox/cmux-dns script is a deployed image asset, and web/tests/vm-devbox-dns.test.ts is a focused test fixture. The remaining changes update image build/verification logic, source manifests, documentation, and comments. No artifact directories, logs, media, caches, build output, dependency checkouts, or scratch paths appear in the diff.
Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps
Explanation
The prior failure remains unresolved. The reviewed diff adds RestartSec=1 to the production cmux-dns.service in web/scripts/devbox-image-common.ts, together with Restart=always. This fixed restart delay makes service recovery depend on elapsed wall-clock time, which matches the rule's lifecycle failure condition. The added Type=notify readiness signal does not remove this delay. The readiness test covers READY=1, but no test covers restart behavior without a fixed delay.
Resolution
Remove RestartSec=1 from cmux-dns.service. Keep Type=notify and READY=1 after both listeners bind. Use systemd service state and notification handling for recovery, and add or retain a test for readiness and restart behavior without a fixed elapsed delay.

- cache key is the wire question, so label boundaries cannot collide
- stale answers expire after a day and start over on every resolv.conf
write (TLS rule, resume), not only when the resolver list changes
- every exchange runs under a wall-clock deadline; two platform tries at
most, so DoH keeps its budget
- UDP truncation follows the client's size (512 or EDNS up to 1232)
- replies for another question are dropped; responses and queries without
exactly one question get no answer
- guard re-reads before replacing, keeps search and other options, lists
IPv4 fallbacks first, and sets attempts:1 (the stub retries itself)
- bake and verifier probe the stub directly (libc would hide a dead one)
- driver comments: steering is now DNS-based, not /etc/hosts

Each incomplete TCP connection creates a handler thread and can occupy it for up to 10 seconds. The service has no application-level connection limit. This can consume task and memory capacity and cause new DNS connections to be rejected. ThreadingMixIn handles thread-start failure by closing the accepted connection and continuing the serving loop, so listener termination is not established.

Update the TCPServer configuration to enforce a finite limit on concurrent TCP
handler threads, closing or rejecting excess connections while allowing the
serving loop to continue.
No test makes 1.1.1.1 fail while budget remains and then checks that 8.8.8.8 returns a successful answer. Removing the second endpoint would therefore leave the current assertions passing. Add a local test that forces platform resolution to fail, makes the first DoH endpoint time out, returns an answer from 8.8.8.8, and asserts both the successful response and the second-endpoint call.

Guard can overwrite a platform rewrite of resolv.conf.
guard reads /etc/resolv.conf, re-reads it at line 204 to confirm it is unchanged, then calls os.replace at line 206. A platform write that lands after the re-read and before the replace is discarded. Later guard runs return early on the marker, so the stub keeps the stale # cmux-dns upstream list until the platform rewrites the file again. Closing this window needs a design change, because os.replace cannot exclude concurrent writers.

Deferred to the follow-up (finding 5 in the head-972378204f8e review). The re-read narrows this race but doesn't close it. The follow-up loops until guarded() returns None. Impact is low: if a platform write is lost, the guest still has the platform resolver as a fallback. Any change to cmux-dns changes the devbox source digest, which forces a full re-bake and re-promotion of the image ladder. This PR is being re-baked now to absorb #27152, so this is not folded in here.

Bound each upstream exchange by one total deadline.
read_exact applies the socket timeout to each recv, so a peer that sends a byte before each timeout keeps a _POOL worker busy past the caller's budget. bounded cannot stop that worker. Enough such workers block cold-miss queries. Enforce one deadline per exchange, covering TCP and DoH reads.

Deferred to the follow-up (finding 3 in the head-972378204f8e review): run UDP/TCP exchanges inline and give DoH its own bounded pool. Stale answers keep their original record TTLs, so clients can cache them past the 24-hour window.
The resolver stores the complete upstream wire response. On an upstream failure, it returns that response unchanged through with_id(stale, query), so every record keeps the TTL it had when it was fetched. A client that receives a stale answer late in the window can cache it for that full TTL. Clearing the resolver's cache on a resolv.conf change does not clear copies already held by clients.
The resolver stops serving an entry 24 hours after it was stored. The risk is the TTL that clients receive.
On the stale-answer path, set the TTL of each non-OPT resource record in the answer, authority, and additional sections to a short value, such as 30 seconds. RFC 8767 recommends this for stale data. Leave the OPT pseudo-record (type 41) unchanged. Its TTL field carries the extended RCODE, EDNS version, and DO flag, so zeroing it changes the meaning of the response. Do not set all TTLs to zero. Keep the documented one-day stale fallback.

Valid point, deferred to the same follow-up: on the stale path, clamp the TTL of every non-OPT record to 30 s (RFC 8767) and leave OPT alone. Give the second DoH endpoint a chance when the first one is silent.
The DoH loop in Resolver.resolve shares one deadline across both endpoints. When the platform resolver is silent, its two attempts use about 2.0 s of the 3.5 s budget. That leaves about 1.5 s. If 1.1.1.1 is also silent, its request waits the full min(DOH_TIMEOUT, remaining), which is about 1.5 s. The deadline then passes, the loop breaks, and 8.8.8.8 is never attempted. The lookup returns SERVFAIL even though the second DoH endpoint is configured to answer.
Give each DoH endpoint its own bounded window, or reserve part of the budget for later endpoints. Update tests/vm-devbox-dns.test.ts at lines 160-172, which currently asserts that 8.8.8.8 is never called in this case.

Deferred to the same follow-up: give each DoH endpoint its own share of the deadline. In production, TLS-rule steering is active on every machine, so DoH doesn't run there (the PR body documents that cold misses get SERVFAIL while steering is active). @austinywang Understood. Deferring this to the follow-up is reasonable. When TLS steering is active, the resolver returns SERVFAIL on cold misses before it reaches DoH. The deadline-sharing issue remains valid when steering is inactive, but it does not affect the production configuration you described.

## 6. Fixed sleeps, timeouts and polling (228)
- **Wait for the signal, not the clock.** Replace `sleep N`, fixed yields and polling loops with a
readiness signal, a completion callback or an explicit condition (#13351, #18457, #19617,
#20441). This is the most common test-flake fix. In production code it's a correctness bug.

This is not a daemon-readiness handshake: terminal and SQLite journal writes continue after the daemon binds port 1337, and no guest signal establishes that the disk has warmed up. The window matches cmux-devbox-boot's HOUSEKEEPING_DELAY. The attach-time script reaches running machines without a new image bake. Do not recommend replacing this resource-contention deferral with a daemon-readiness signal merely because it uses sleep.

Check that a nonempty or unreadable marker blocks public DoH on cache misses while allowing generation-scoped cached platform answers. An absent or empty marker permits DoH, but steering and resolver generation must be rechecked before returning a public answer.

No blockers. Every failure path below falls back to the platform resolver, which is how guests resolve today.
#
Severity
Finding
Resolution
1
should-fix
cmux-dns-guard.service keeps systemd's default start limit (5 starts in 10 s). A burst of platform rewrites can trip it, and later rewrites then stay unguarded until reboot.
Deferred to a follow-up: add StartLimitIntervalSec=0. Changing the units needs a re-bake and re-promotion, because the source-digest drift test pins the images to the source.
2
should-fix
guarded() keeps a platform options rotate, which would make libc skip the stub for most queries.
Deferred to the same follow-up. Latent: Freestyle's resolv.conf has no rotate.
3
should-fix
The shared exchange pool can fill with stuck DoH calls under a sustained outage, so new platform tries SERVFAIL in the queue.
Deferred to the same follow-up: run UDP/TCP exchanges inline and give DoH its own bounded pool.
4
doc
With TLS rules on every machine, DoH never runs in production, so cold misses during an outage get SERVFAIL.
Already stated in the PR body: cold misses return SERVFAIL while steering is active.
5
nit
The guard's re-read narrows the platform-write race but does not close it.
Follow-up: loop until guarded() returns None. Low impact: the platform still answers port 53.
6
nit
A resolv.conf rewrite SERVFAILs in-flight answers (generation fence).
Accepted: libc retries the platform directly, so the cost is only latency.
7
nit
The verify check on the resolv.conf marker can race a rewrite that happens right before it runs.
Follow-up: bounded retry.
8
nit
No WatchdogSec= for a stub that is alive but wedged.
Follow-up.
Checked correct: failure() and truncated() flags, question bounds, EDNS size capping, TC replies not cached, Type=notify readiness after both listeners bind, and the bake order (the stub is in place before the later bake steps).
Tests: the reviewer only read code and ran small python3 -I checks against the script. Hosted CI on 972378204f8e covers the bun DNS, image and manifest tests.
gh-merge-green on 972378204f8e (71/71 checks green, review posted above) was refused: the PR now conflicts with main at 877b6b401ecf.
The conflict is in web/services/vms/images/manifest.json. #27152 changed the Dockerfile and bake scripts and promoted its own images.
main's images (sh-f6cf988a… ladder) were baked without cmux-dns.
This PR's images (sh-ae52f310… ladder) were baked without the bubblewrap change.
devboxSourceDriftProblems requires the default entries to match the checkout's source digest, so neither side's entries can be kept.
The source files merge cleanly. The manifest needs a fresh bun run devbox:promote -- freestyle from the merged commit, under the production Freestyle account.
I could not run it: the Freestyle key available to the landing session was rejected as invalid. The head is left at 972378204f8e.

Default Freestyle manifest rows no longer match the devbox source fingerprint.
The source manifest now always records a dns entry, and DEVBOX_TEMPLATE_FILES now includes cmux-dns. The default rows were baked from ce1717b6, whose shell object has no dns key. Their recorded digests therefore differ from the digest computed at head. devboxSourceDriftProblems reports each default schema-2 row. This makes web/scripts/validate-devbox-ladder.ts exit with an error. It also fails the expect(devboxSourceDriftProblems(readImageManifest())).toEqual([]) assertion in web/tests/vm-image-manifest.test.ts.
Regenerate the default images from the merged sources with bun run devbox:promote -- freestyle, so the manifest records digests for the current sources. Do not change the fingerprint or the drift check to make the existing rows pass. The check's own remedy text says to promote a new bake or revert the sources with the manifest.

Add StartLimitIntervalSec=0 to the guard service.
Each platform rewrite of /etc/resolv.conf starts the guard, and the guard's own rewrite starts it again. systemd's default limit allows five starts in 10 seconds. Once a burst exceeds that, the start is refused and nothing retries it until the next rewrite or reboot. Set StartLimitIntervalSec=0 in the [Unit] section.

Update the guard service unit definition to include StartLimitIntervalSec=0 in
its [Unit] section, before [Service], so systemd does not refuse repeated guard
starts.

Make the DNS gate fail only on stub readiness, or retry the public-name lookup.
A platform resolver outage during bake or verification fails the github.com checks. The stub returns SERVFAIL for a cold miss while TLS steering is active, so the bake or verifier exits 1 and the image cannot be promoted, even when the stub is installed correctly.
Whether steering is active on the bake and verification machines is not established. The failure also needs DoH to be unreachable when steering is inactive, so the trigger is narrow.

Update the DNS checks around DEVBOX_DNS_PATH so transient failure resolving
github.com does not by itself fail the bake or verification; establish whether
DNS steering is active in those environments, then make the gate validate stub
readiness or retry the public-name lookup as appropriate. Preserve the
requirement that DoH is unreachable when steering is inactive.

The images on main (#27152) were baked
without cmux-dns, and this branch's images were baked without the bubblewrap
change, so neither ladder matched the merged sources. Re-baked, verified and
derived from 8bd203b by Cloud VM image contract run 41579771241
(dns-fallback-ok at bake and verify).

Re-promotion and correctness review, head 3394aca1e81e
What changed since 972378204f8e: merged main (now 21dcc2b27b) and re-promoted the devbox images. This clears the blocker from #27152. The source files merged cleanly, and the only conflict was manifest.json.
Images: baked, verified and derived from merge commit 8bd203bf55 by Cloud VM image contract promote run https://github.com/manaflow-ai/cmux/actions/runs/41579771241. That run used the cloud-vm-image-checks Freestyle key, so no personal key was needed. The new ladder is freestyle-cmux-devbox-41579771241-1-* (sm sh-8e30265b…, md sh-9489bb2e…, lg sh-4a6af063…, lgx sh-0f76b6ef…, xl sh-37b38237…, 2xl sh-f89d6197…).
DNS stub: the bake log shows dns-fallback-ok at bake and again at verify.
Later merge: main's changes between 877b6b40 and 21dcc2b2 touch no devbox image inputs, and devbox:manifest:check passes at HEAD.
Review (subagent, read-only): no blockers, no should-fix.
Manifest: all 712 of main's entries are kept. The 12 new entries take defaultForKind, plus defaultForLocalDev on -sm-base. There is exactly one default per kind and size, and every new entry records repoCommit8bd203bf55 and source digest e4e1bf79….
Daemon: the new cmuxTuiCommit6da40f7e59 is a descendant of main's.
Merge: for every PR file, the merge with 21dcc2b2 matches main's own change. The Freestyle SDK bump (0.2.10 to 0.2.21) runs only on the host and does not change the image.
Nit: each desktop entry and its -base entry share an imageId. Main's ladder does the same.
CodeRabbit threads: the four open threads on cmux-dns (guard race, DoH pool, stale TTLs, per-endpoint DoH deadline) are replied to and deferred to the follow-up listed in the previous review. Changing cmux-dns would force another full bake.
Flake:preflight-agent-chat failed once (codex-recovery.test.ts) and passed on rerun.
Local tests:bun run devbox:manifest:check passes. bun test tests/vm-devbox-dns.test.ts and the image/manifest tests pass on hosted CI. Locally on macOS, 10 agent-config shell tests time out at 5 s; those scripts target Linux and pass on CI.
Ready for review at head 3394aca1e81e3d321a18ea80a87fba324c4c0db2.
Merged with current main (21dcc2b27); mergeable.
Devbox images were re-promoted from the merged source by the Cloud VM image contract promote workflow. The bake and verify logs both show dns-fallback-ok, and bun run devbox:manifest:check passes.

Fixes #26640.
New Cloud machines use a guest DNS stub on
127.0.0.2:53over UDP and TCP.
A path unit restores the stub after the platform rewrites
resolv.conf. The image source fingerprint covers the resolver and its units. The manifest promotes a real bake from
ce47d83051fb49adbe44f5b28405b0a02b054290for both desktop and base machines at all six sizes. Master:sh-ae52f310550b46bd8083c0cfb11b88a0. Each derived size was rebooted and checked. Shared snapshot pointers were left unchanged. Existing machines receive this through normal image replacement; this PR does not upgrade running guests.Validation
