Summary

When a mini refuses a DEV compile, the owned-pool rescue is supposed to re-run it until it lands somewhere. Two gaps meant it could be lost.

1. cmux-bot re-runs were treated as a person's. The rescue re-runs with the cmux-bot App's token, but owned_rerun() and sweep_target() compared the triggering actor only against github-actions[bot]. So every bot re-run of cmux-next.yml looked manual. It stayed minis-first and was watched again at any attempt, which looped on the side label. Run 40444295785, a DEV daily, went through 10 cmux-bot attempts and a mini refused every one. RESCUE_ACTORS = {"github-actions[bot]", "cmux-bot[bot]"} replaces RESCUE_ACTOR for cmux-next.yml. Bot attempt 3 is now refusals-only, and attempt 4 takes Blacksmith. ci.yml keeps CI_RESCUE_ACTOR = "github-actions[bot]", because its placement (pr_runner_pool.py, ci-macos.yml) still moves only that actor's attempt 3 off the minis, so a cmux-bot re-run of CI still needs its watch.

A re-run POST that GitHub refuses for a rate limit used to be sent again after the wait without re-reading the run. Now it is re-sent only while the run is still the finished attempt it re-runs (before_retry). Two watches can own one failed attempt: the new completed one and the sweeper's. Without this check, a delayed retry could start one attempt more than either watch meant.

2. A refused cmux-next DEV run depended only on the sweeper. cmux-next was not a workflow_run source. The sweeper reads with the cmux-bot token, and its listings run out of the hour's API budget, returning 403 for several ticks each hour. cmux-next (its name: on main and feat-cmux-next) is now a source. The job's new completed branch admits it only when:

  • the run's conclusion is failure,
  • the path is .github/workflows/cmux-next.yml from this repository,
  • and it is either a workflow_dispatch whose display_title starts with cmux NEXT DEV daily, or a push to feat-cmux-next.

That branch has no run_attempt == 1 check. The script resolves the event with completed_target(), which calls sweep_target() the way the sweeper does: attempt 2 is watched, bot attempt 3 is refusals-only, and a bot attempt past 3 is left alone. Each failed attempt gets its own concurrency group. A completed event's group carries a -completed suffix (owned-pool-rescue-<id>-<attempt>-completed). Without the suffix, a nightly's or DEV daily's completed run would join the group of that attempt's still-running requested watch and cancel it (cancel-in-progress) just as the run ends, which is exactly when a refusal is found.

The three existing sources (iOS screenshots, nightly, DEV daily) behave as before. The old branch now also requires github.event.action == 'requested' and a path other than cmux-next.yml, because types is shared by every workflow in one workflow_run block. Without that, a cmux-next requested event would match the generic side-lane clause.

Risk

  • .github/workflows change. It adds no new permissions, secrets or triggers beyond the extra workflow_run source.
  • types: [requested, completed] applies to all four sources, so every cmux-next run and every completed run of the other three now creates a rescue workflow run whose job is skipped. That adds Actions-list noise but costs no runner time.
  • Each run re-reads the failed attempt's jobs: about 3 to 5 API calls per failed DEV run.
  • A sweeper watch and this new per-run rescue can both see the same failed attempt. rescue() re-reads run_attempt before it re-runs, a duplicate POST on a re-queued run is refused by GitHub, and a re-run delayed by a rate-limit wait checks the run again (above).

Out of scope (follow-ups)

  • feat-cmux-next's cmux-next.yml runs-on expressions still check github.triggering_actor == 'github-actions[bot]'. A cmux-bot attempt 4 is routed to Blacksmith by those expressions, not by this script, so that file needs the same two-actor check in its own PR.
  • scripts/ci/pr_runner_pool.py and ci-macos.yml still treat only github-actions[bot] as the rescue for ci.yml. This PR leaves that route alone and keeps watching cmux-bot CI re-runs.

Tests

tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py:

  • A cmux-bot attempt 3 gives refusals_only=True, and next_attempt says attempt 4 takes Blacksmith. A cmux-bot attempt 4 is not watched. A person's attempt 3 is not refusals-only.
  • main() gets a completed event: cmux-next.yml, dispatch, attempt 2, failure, and "cmux NEXT DEV Release compile" failed in "Set up runner" after 68 s. It re-runs every job as attempt 3 on the fake GitHub, with no cancel.
  • A completed event for another workflow, for a bot attempt 4, or for a successful run is not watched and makes no API call.
  • YAML: cmux-next is in the source list with types: [requested, completed] and in SOURCE_WORKFLOW_PATHS. The if admits the completed failed DEV event. The requested branch excludes cmux-next.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Failed cmux-next daily development runs can trigger automated recovery, including eligible runs on the designated development branch and reruns beyond the first attempt.
    • Recovery handling recognizes reruns initiated by either supported automation bot.
    • Completed-run recovery is tracked separately from requested-run recovery, with existing eligibility checks preserved for requested runs.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Recovery avoids submitting a rerun if another attempt has already started while waiting for a rate-limit reset.

…DEV run

The owned-pool rescue re-runs with the cmux-bot App's token, but owned_rerun()
and sweep_target() only counted github-actions[bot] as the bot. Every bot
re-run of cmux-next.yml looked like a person's, stayed minis-first, and was
watched again at any attempt: run 40444295785, a DEV daily, went through 10
cmux-bot attempts, each refused by a mini. RESCUE_ACTORS now names both, so
bot attempt 3 is refusals only and attempt 4 takes Blacksmith.

cmux-next was not a workflow_run source, so a refused DEV compile waited for
the sweeper, whose listings run out of the hour's API budget. cmux-next is now
a `completed` source: a failed DEV daily dispatch or feat-cmux-next push wakes
its own rescue at any attempt, resolved like the sweeper's
(completed_target() -> sweep_target()). The three existing sources still act
on `requested` only, and a cmux-next `requested` event never matches.

Walkthrough

The rescue workflow now handles selected failed cmux-next completion events. The rescue script selects targets for those events, recognizes both rescue bot actors, and rechecks run state before sending a rerun request delayed by rate limiting.

Changes: cmux-next owned-pool rescue

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow event filtering and routing
.github/workflows/ci-owned-pool-rescue.yml, tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py
The workflow listens for requested and completed events. Its completed-event condition selects failed cmux-next DEV daily dispatches with the specified title prefix or pushes on feat-cmux-next. Completed runs use a separate run-name suffix and concurrency group. Tests assert these conditions.
Completed-run target selection and actor rules
scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py, tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py
main routes completed events through completed_target, which accepts only cmux-next.yml and delegates target selection to sweep_target. Both bot actors count as rescue actors, with tests covering attempt limits and refusals-only handling.
Delayed rerun state validation
scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py, tests/test_ci_owned_pool_rescue.py
After a rate-limit wait, rerun requests verify that the run remains completed at the expected prior attempt. Tests check that a queued or advanced attempt prevents a second POST.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names two changes: cmux-bot re-runs now count as the rescue's, and a rescue is woken per failed DEV run. Both match the diff and the stated objectives. It is a long single sentence (76 characters, 14 words) and uses the terse 'ci:' prefix, but it is specific and readable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Summary, Testing, Changelog, Proof and Checklist. The Summary explains the problem, the mechanism and the resulting behavior in detail, and it includes a Risk section and follow-ups. The Testing section lists the new tests but gives no command or run result, and the template asks for that. The Changelog section is missing, and the Proof section has no one-line reason. The Checklist is not addressed. Bug-fix Observed/Not run section is also absent. These gaps are non-critical, so the check passes.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

PASS. The authoritative diff changes only the CI rescue workflow, scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py, and its tests. The changes add workflow_run completion handling, actor classification, GitHub API retry checks, and concurrency naming. No changed path or changed behavior creates a cmux-tui client, Ghostty runtime, PTY or shell readiness gate, physical transport/carrier, input-routing path, snapshot path, or Cloud session auth/lease/revision mechanism. Therefore the Cloud persistent-session and early-input rule does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

The pull request changes only CI workflow, Python rescue logic, and related tests. The rule-scoped Swift files are unchanged, and no added lines contain browser automation, WebKit/AppKit, or worker-router changes. The custom check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions YAML workflow, Python rescue logic, and Python tests. It introduces no production Swift, TypeScript, or JavaScript changes, so the cache-substitution correctness condition does not apply.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS. The production Python diff adds actor classification, completed-event target selection, and a pre-retry state check. It does not add sleep, timers, fixed backoff, or polling logic. Existing rate-limit and watch waits remain unchanged, and the workflow YAML is out of scope under the rule.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

No algorithmic-complexity violation is introduced. The production changes use constant-size actor membership in scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py:497-520, add one completed-event target dispatch at :1352-1364, and add a single validation read before a rate-limit retry at :1218-1238. The diff adds no nested scalable-collection scan, per-target batch rescan, repeated sort/filter in a hot path, or unbenchmarked slower algorithm. Existing collection scans remain unchanged.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

The pull request changes only a GitHub workflow, a Python script, and Python tests. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift code, so it does not introduce or expand the legacy Swift concurrency patterns covered by this check.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

The PR changes only the rescue workflow, Python rescue logic, and its tests. It does not change a cmux-owned Package.swift, any .gitignore, an Xcode project package reference, or any Package.resolved file. The workflow diff contains no SwiftPM, Xcode, or dependency-resolution change, so the lockfile policy is not violated.

Full details: Cmux Swift Logging

Explanation

The pull request changes only one workflow YAML file, one Python script, and one Python test file. It adds no Swift changes and therefore introduces no logging covered by .github/review-bot-rules/swift-logging.md.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

PASS. The diff changes an internal GitHub Actions rescue workflow and its operator script. Added notices and abort messages are emitted to workflow logs or the GitHub Actions step summary, not to a cmux app UI, product CLI, or product API. The rule permits provider names and diagnostics in internal CI tools. Tests and comments add no user-facing text.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only CI workflow configuration, an internal rescue script, and tests. Added comments, docstrings, run names, and rescue error text are operational/developer-facing, not product UI, web content, API copy, or localization data. No Swift, web, message, or string-catalog files changed, and no locale-dependent user-facing text was introduced.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only .github/workflows/ci-owned-pool-rescue.yml, scripts/ci/owned_pool_rescue.py, and its Python tests. No Swift files or SwiftUI state/layout constructs are changed.

Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts

Explanation

The pull request changes only CI workflow, Python rescue logic, and Python tests. It introduces no Swift changes and no standalone cmux-owned window code. The auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

The PR changes only three intentional source-control paths: a GitHub Actions workflow, a Python rescue script, and its tests. The diff adds workflow configuration, hand-written logic, comments, and test fixtures/assertions. It adds no logs, screenshots, recordings, caches, build output, dependency checkout, temporary directory, or broad artifact directory.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 20.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 25 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

ci.yml's placement still moves only github-actions[bot]'s attempt 3 off the
minis, so a cmux-bot re-run of CI stays watched. A re-run refused for a rate
limit is sent again only while the run is still the finished attempt it
re-runs: a cmux-next completed watch and the sweeper can own one attempt.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Treat an already rerun attempt as a successful no-op.

When the sweeper reruns the attempt during this rate-limit wait, _still_finished raises Aborted. main then reports “gave up” and returns 1, so the completed-event rescue fails even though the competing rescue succeeded. Use a distinct already-rerun outcome that stops the POST without failing the rescue workflow. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
