Stop shared agent-index reloads from re-rendering every pane - #22748
SharedLiveAgentIndex reloads at most every 5 s while agent hooks write the hook store (~/.cmuxterm), and each full reload posts .sharedLiveAgentIndexDidChange without userInfo. Every Workspace answered with an unconditional objectWillChange.send(), so WorkspaceContentView re-ran and rebuilt every pane: one GhosttyTerminalView.updateNSView and portal reconciliation per terminal, while the user was idle. On a window with many panes that work, and the SwiftUI graph update it drives, is the main-thread time in the no-app-frame hang reports.
The publish was added (v0.64.18) so Bonsplit's tab bar re-read Fork Conversation availability. The tab context menu now reads availability through its provider and refresh handler when it opens, and restored-agent reconciliation mutates the @ObservableRestoredAgentLifecycleCoordinator, so no view needs the workspace publish. The observer keeps reconciling restored agents and no longer publishes.
Evidence
From Sentry (400 full events of CMUXTERM-MACOS-3ZVC, 3,000 light events, 14-day rates by release):
3ZVC, 3PAX, 1PTM and AZ are one bucket: App Hang events with no in-app frame, grouped by the entry culprit, which changed in 0.65.1. Devices hitting it in 14 days: 0.64.25 17.4%, 0.65.0 12.6%, 0.65.1 10.6%, 0.65.2 6.9%. It is not a 0.65 regression; it predates 0.65.
About a quarter of the events block in system IPC (LaunchServices _applicationNameChanged, SkyLight display state) and are outside cmux. The rest are SwiftUI graph updates, layout and display-list work.
82 of 146 multi-pane hang events show, in the 60 s before capture, a burst with one geometryPublication per surface within 200 ms: every pane's updateNSView ran. Bursts recur every few seconds at idle, then breadcrumbs stop and socket main-hop timeouts follow.
Ruled out: the issue's @AppStorage/UserDefaults lead. In a standalone check on macOS 26.6, @AppStorage views did not re-evaluate for unrelated-key or same-value writes, and 20k–40k observers cost milliseconds per write.
Scope
This PR stops the idle reload bursts. #22901 owns the other half of #22703: the Bonsplit split root leaked one withObservationTracking registration per render, so each burst re-rendered the tree many times (manaflow-ai/bonsplit#291). No files overlap. Defaults chosen here: keep this PR to the cmux-side publish rather than folding in the Bonsplit bump, because the Bonsplit pointer has its own merge order in the integration PR.
Testing
WorkspaceContentViewVisibilityTests/testSharedAgentIndexReloadDoesNotReevaluatePaneContent sets up three workspaces in a controlled project root and awaits each root's discovery. It then hosts the main window, waits for it to go quiet, and posts the full-reload .sharedLiveAgentIndexDidChange. It expects no workspace publish and no WorkspaceContentView or ContentView body evaluation. The observer now delivers on the main queue and handles the change before post returns (SharedLiveAgentIndex is @MainActor). The test therefore asserts at a causal point instead of draining for queued tasks, and production code has no test seam. WorkspaceProcessWideObserverRetirementTests checks that retirement removes the observer.
Regression proof: run 40394452100 executed one test with the unconditional publication restored and failed with workspacePublishes = 4 and workspaceContentBody = 1. The current test preserves those assertions, posts the real notification, waits for each workspace's project-root discovery, and explicitly displays the hosted window. It lives in an extension of the same serialized suite; it is wired into cmuxTests.
The previous verified main catch-up is 79671bf968545675f1788d8a8fc9326341df1eef. Its app, test and project diff is byte-identical to reviewed and fleet-built d319d3666397a91b7c850150c04b237eb405fb21; the catch-up only includes seven inherited CI/tooling commits. Focused run 40734289457 requests both WorkspaceContentViewVisibilityTests and WorkspaceProcessWideObserverRetirementTests on that code. It passed: 25 tests executed in two suites (23 visibility tests and 2 observer-retirement tests), including the agent-index reload regression in 0.571 seconds. No assertions were skipped or relaxed.
Latest base update: 6eb01e6d1ff55fce4bf773901107b12e0cca44df merges origin/main at aa4dcd453ce9a2ce5baa66c0863ef8d5758a4350 without rewriting history. The only conflict was cmux.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj; scripts/merge-main.sh --tip --no-guards --remote origin resolved it by combining added entries and normalizing the project. The fix and regression source files did not change. Current-head CI is pending.
Observed / Not run
Observed on the latest merge: project normalization, 13 app-source wiring-tool tests, app-source membership, test-source membership (1,319 files), and git diff --check pass. The local localization-defaults, full test-wiring recipe, and feature-flag checks hit the existing 60-second limit on the overloaded Mac; they are not recorded as passes. No local Swift or Xcode build was run.
Observed: the Sentry investigation recorded above; the historical red regression log; all six scoped static preflight checks (including 13 app-source wiring-tool tests, no skips); file-size budgets; clean merge-conflict checks; structured review with no actionable correctness findings (0.99 confidence).
Observed: native run 40734289457 compiled the app/test targets and passed all 25 tests on macOS 15. Previous-head CI run 40735909143 is green on 79671bf968545675f1788d8a8fc9326341df1eef. Its changed-suite job executed 34 tests across five suites on macOS 26, including the reload regression; app-host compilation, warning-budget validation and CLI binary smoke checks also passed. The agent-chat guard retry passed 125 tests with zero failures after its first attempt stalled in dependency installation.
Observed: controller build 99f8205f6a6f094176d77692 compiled and packaged d319d3666397a91b7c850150c04b237eb405fb21 on aws-m4pro-3 in 183 seconds, artifact sha256:4554140ac74d23a3851e390aba2578c608a3488ca5aa18687d519ac234995542. The tag is issue-22703-agent-index-reloads. HQ publication is blocked by the local certificate trust error; the verified build artifact exists.
Not run: no live capture of an idle window with many panes or release signing/notarization run. The native app build does not establish those results. No test assertion, timeout, retry policy, packaging, signing, or CLI behavior was weakened for this fix.
Changelog
Fixed: idle windows with many panes no longer hang when agent hooks refresh the shared agent index.

Correctness review (review subagent) of a3e0eba, code reading only:
No blocking findings.
Nothing sinks Workspace.objectWillChange for this notification. Views that need the agent index already observe the notification themselves (command palette fork availability, compact sidebar agent rows, SessionIndexStore, the Computer Use stores).
reconcileCompletedRestoredAgent mutates the @ObservableRestoredAgentLifecycleCoordinator, so its readers update without the workspace publish.
Bonsplit reads Fork Conversation availability when the menu is built and in menuNeedsUpdate/menuWillOpen. An open menu showing "refreshing" re-reads it after the refresh handler returns.
The only test that depended on the publish is the retirement test, now switched to the DEBUG seam. Its positive check still holds.
The new hosted-window test fails on the base (the observer is installed for loading-card workspaces too, and the old send ran even without a loaded index) and passes with the fix. drainMainRunLoop yields so the observer's MainActor task runs before the assertions.
Non-blocking, pre-existing, not changed here: Workspace+AgentLifecycle.swift:271 drops the Bool from reconcileCompletedAgent, so a restored agent that starts running again does not re-sync its tab icon. The removed publish never refreshed that icon either, so it is left for a separate change.

Walkthrough
The shared agent-index observer delegates notifications to a workspace handler. The handler reconciles applicable completed restored agents without publishing workspace-wide changes. Tests check retirement behavior and verify that refreshes do not cause workspace publications or content-view evaluations.
The observer delegates notifications to a handler on the main queue. The handler skips retired workspaces, reconciles applicable completed restored agents, and does not send objectWillChange.
Verify refresh and retirement behavior cmuxTests/ClosedMainWindowRoutingTests.swift, cmuxTests/WorkspaceContentViewVisibilityTests.swift
Tests verify observer cleanup after retirement and confirm that shared-index handling causes no workspace publications or content-view evaluations.
The shared-index change appears mergeable after normal checks; no concrete remaining issue is established by the supplied evidence.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
For [#22703], Sources/Workspace.swift removes the shared-agent-index observer's unconditional objectWillChange.send() and retains restored-agent reconciliation. The new WorkspaceContentViewVisibilityTests/testSharedAgentIndexReloadDoesNotReevaluatePaneContent requires all three workspace observers to handle a reload with zero workspace publishes and zero ContentView or WorkspaceContentView body evaluations. The existing testMinimalModeToggleDoesNotReevaluateChromeHeavyBodies settles an idle hosted window, performs a UserDefaults write, and checks body evaluations. These tests and the observer path identify the shared-agent-index publish as the cmux-side loop owner.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within [#22703]. Sources/Workspace.swift changes only shared-agent-index notification handling and adds a testable handler. WorkspaceContentViewVisibilityTests.swift adds regression coverage. ClosedMainWindowRoutingTests.swift updates retirement coverage for the removed publish. The separate Bonsplit observation-tracking work is not included.
Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input
Explanation
PASS. The reviewed diff changes only shared agent-index notification handling and related tests in Sources/Workspace.swift and cmuxTests/*. It does not change Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui clients, persistent transports, manual renderer admission, input routing, authentication, idempotency, revision fences, or attachment leases. The cloud persistent-session and early-input failure conditions are therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation
Explanation
No actor-isolation failure is introduced. The only production change is in Workspace.swift; it adds no value model, service protocol, or Sendable reference type. The observer now uses queue: .main and enters MainActor.assumeIsolated before calling handleSharedLiveAgentIndexChange. The handler therefore reads the UI-bound Workspace state and the @MainActorSharedLiveAgentIndex on the main actor. The shared index also posts from @MainActor tasks. The changed tests do not affect this check.
Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime
Explanation
The production diff adds a main-queue notification observer and synchronous MainActor.assumeIsolated handling, but it adds no semaphore, blocking wait, sleep, delayed dispatch, polling loop, main-queue sync, or manual lock. The new run-loop draining and time limit occur only in test code, which the check explicitly excludes when used as deterministic scaffolding.
Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only Sources/Workspace.swift and two workspace test files. The diff contains no browser socket commands, WebKit waits, worker-router changes, or ControlCommandExecutionPolicy changes. The browser automation off-main rule is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load
Explanation
The production diff adds no synchronous history loader, file read, JSON parse, directory scan, or transcript access. The new handler reads SharedLiveAgentIndex.shared.index, which is an in-memory cached accessor. SharedLiveAgentIndex starts its loader with Task.detached(priority: .utility). The restored-agent reconciliation already existed in the prior main-actor notification task, so this change does not introduce or worsen an expensive history load.
Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness
Explanation
PASS: The production diff does not replace a fresh authoritative read with a cache in a persistence, history, undo, or snapshot path. SharedLiveAgentIndex.shared.index and index.entry(...) were already used in the base handler and remain unchanged after the refactor. The change moves notification handling, removes objectWillChange.send(), and exposes the observer for tests. The retained read supports restored-agent reconciliation, not persisted history or undo data.
Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only Sources/Workspace.swift and Swift test files. The custom check covers TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, and non-Swift build/runtime scripts. No covered file or production fixed delay was introduced.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
PASS: The production diff moves the existing filter/compactMap reconciliation logic into handleSharedLiveAgentIndexChange; it does not add nested scans or per-target rescans. RestorableAgentSessionIndex.entry uses dictionary lookups. The changed notification dispatch does not worsen the algorithmic complexity, and the tests are not production paths.
Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency
Explanation
PASS. The changed runtime path replaces the prior fire-and-forget Task { @MainActor ... } with a synchronous handler invoked by a .main notification observer and MainActor.assumeIsolated. This is a permitted AppKit/SwiftUI-style main-queue boundary, not background async work. The added sink and async waits are test-only probes and XCTest synchronization, which the rule permits. The diff adds no background queues, DispatchGroup, new app-state Combine usage, or new completion-handler API.
Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`
Explanation
PASS. The Swift diff adds no nonisolated async work and no @concurrent annotations. The new handleSharedLiveAgentIndexChange is synchronous and accesses workspace and @MainActor state through a .main notification queue with MainActor.assumeIsolated; this is intentionally UI-bound work. The added async test is explicitly @MainActor and performs UI test coordination, not a heavy async helper requiring an actor hop. Existing async helpers and call sites are unchanged.
Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries
Explanation
PASS. The production diff changes Workspace notification wiring and adds handleSharedLiveAgentIndexChange in Sources/Workspace.swift. The handler is tightly coupled to Workspace state, SharedLiveAgentIndex.shared, RestorableAgentResumeState, and reconcileCompletedRestoredAgent; it is app-lifecycle composition, not reusable domain logic. The observer also coordinates MainActor and NotificationCenter behavior. The changed tests are test code. No independently compilable provider, parsing, persistence, protocol, or cross-surface logic was introduced that requires a new SwiftPM target.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
The reviewed range changes only Sources/Workspace.swift and two test files. It does not change a Package.swift, Package.resolved, cmux.xcodeproj package references, .gitignore, workflow, or dependency declaration. The SwiftPM lockfile policy is therefore not triggered.
Full details: Cmux Swift Logging
Explanation
The pull request changes only Sources/Workspace.swift and two test files. The diff adds no print, debugPrint, dump, NSLog, file/stdout logging, Logger declaration, or sensitive-data logging. Existing NSLog calls in Workspace.swift are outside the changed hunks and are not materially changed.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
The production diff only changes shared agent-index observer handling and adds developer comments. It removes a workspace publication and adds no user-facing error, alert, command output, API error body, or recovery copy. The added assertion and test messages are test-only and are explicitly allowed by the rule. No concrete path to a cmux end user exposes provider names, raw upstream messages, secrets, or internal details.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
The production diff only changes shared-agent-index observer handling and adds notification metadata keys. It adds no user-facing Swift text, localization keys, app catalogs, Info.plist entries, or web UI/data. The added test text and developer comments are explicitly allowed.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
The diff does not introduce any listed SwiftUI state/layout violation. Workspace remains the existing ObservableObject; the change removes its shared-agent-index objectWillChange publication and moves reconciliation into a notification handler. The added test only injects existing environment objects and probes view evaluation. The diff adds no @Published, @StateObject, @EnvironmentObject declarations, GeometryReader, lazy/list row store references, or render-time state mutation.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
The diff does not introduce an architectural-rethink violation. Workspace already owned the .sharedLiveAgentIndexDidChange observer; the change keeps that owner, routes the callback to one handleSharedLiveAgentIndexChange path, and removes the prior asynchronous Task and unconditional objectWillChange publish. The handler uses SharedLiveAgentIndex as the index source of truth and keeps restored-agent reconciliation in Workspace. The added run-loop waits are test-only synchronization, which the rule allows. No new production polling, delay, lock, cache, flag, side channel, duplicate action path, or split UI lifecycle owner is present.
Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts
Explanation
The PR does not add or materially change a user-visible standalone cmux-owned window. Its only added NSWindow is a test fixture in cmuxTests/WorkspaceContentViewVisibilityTests.swift, which the rule explicitly allows. Sources/Workspace.swift changes notification handling only. No auxiliary window identifier or close-shortcut ownership is required, and the CI lint scans Sources rather than this test fixture.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
The diff changes only Sources/Workspace.swift and two hand-written test files. These are intentional source and test changes for the shared agent-index behavior. No logs, screenshots, recordings, scratch directories, dependency checkouts, caches, build output, or other source-control artifacts enter the diff. The test creates a temporary directory at runtime, but does not add that directory to source control.
Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source
Explanation
No prohibited production test/debug seam was added. Sources/Workspace.swift adds the production-used handleSharedLiveAgentIndexChange(userInfo:) method and removes the publish from the real notification path. The observer changes from private to private(set) so tests can read its state directly through @testable import; no DEBUG block, test-named member, or wrapper accessor was added.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is complete and relevant. It includes a detailed Summary, Testing results, Observed / Not run details, and a Changelog entry. The Proof and Checklist sections are omitted, but the author explains that no live user-facing capture was run and documents extensive verification, so the missing sections are non-critical.

Readers of the shared agent index, checked for staleness after the workspace publish is removed:
Fork Conversation menu (vendor/bonsplitTabItemView.swift, TabContextMenuPresenter.swift): reads the provider when the menu is built, in menuNeedsUpdate/menuWillOpen, and after an async refresh. It never depended on a SwiftUI re-render.
Command palette and sidebar compact status (ContentView.swift): subscribe to .sharedLiveAgentIndexDidChange themselves.
Pane content (WorkspaceContentView.swift, terminalAgentContext): changes only when a .completedAgentExit panel is superseded. The kept observer reconciles that, and it mutates the @ObservableRestoredAgentLifecycleCoordinator.
Tab agent icon: pushed through syncTerminalTabAgentIconAsset, not computed during render. There is an existing gap: the completed-to-running reconcile doesn't resync the icon. The old publish didn't fix that either. Low severity, out of scope.
Findings:
Medium, fixed in 90edf27: the new pane test asserted only zeros, so it would also pass if the observers never ran. It now requires every workspace to handle the reload first.
ClosedMainWindowRoutingTests probe and the DEBUG seam: fine.

Every post of .sharedLiveAgentIndexDidChange is on the main actor. SharedLiveAgentIndex is @MainActor, and its dispatch-source path hops through Task { @MainActor }. So MainActor.assumeIsolated in the queue: .main observer can't trap.
No re-entrancy. reconcileCompletedRestoredAgent → RestoredAgentLifecycleCoordinator.reconcileCompletedAgent only reads the index and mutates the coordinator. Nothing reloads, refreshes or re-posts.
Ordering: the handler now runs before the index's changePending check after a post. It doesn't touch the index, so the behavior is the same. The other observers are unaffected.
Compiles: the app target is Swift 5 mode. The assumeIsolated closure is not @Sendable, so the captures are legal.
Low severity, fixed in 7afcf43: the retirement test's "queued/future publications" checks couldn't fail once handling is synchronous and never publishes. It is now named for, and checks, what retirement guarantees: the observer is removed.
CodeRabbit threads: all six are answered and resolved (seam removed; real notification posted; project root awaited).

burst before 82 of 146 multi-pane no-app-frame hangs (issue 22703).
The publish existed so Bonsplit's tab bar re-read Fork Conversation
availability. The tab context menu now reads it through its provider
when it opens, and restored-agent reconciliation mutates an
@observable coordinator, so no view needs the workspace publish.
The retirement test counted that publish as its probe; it now counts
handled notifications through a DEBUG seam.

Review: the zero-count assertions also passed if the observers never
ran. Count handled notifications through the DEBUG seam first.

… test seam
Review (CodeRabbit): the DEBUG closure in Workspace.swift was a test seam
in production source. The observer now calls handleSharedLiveAgentIndexChange,
which the pane test calls synchronously on every workspace instead of
draining the run loop for queued tasks. The retirement test checks the
observer is removed and that a queued change publishes nothing.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review (CodeRabbit): the reload test called the handler directly, so
it would miss an observer that published, and it could measure while
project-root discovery was still pending. The observer now delivers on
the main queue and handles the change before post returns (the index
is MainActor and posts on main), so the test posts the full-reload
notification and asserts with no queued work to wait for. Workspaces
use a controlled project root and the test awaits each root first.

Review: with the change handled synchronously and never publishing,
the queued and future publication counts could not fail. The test now
checks the one thing retirement guarantees here: the observer is gone.

Rebased on main 36540f6; the merge-conflict check passes.
The production fix still removes the unconditional Workspace publication caused by shared-index reloads and preserves restored-agent reconciliation. No retry, timeout, or assertion was relaxed.
Moved the handler and regression into focused files to satisfy the Swift file-size policy, wired both files into their existing targets, and installed workspace cleanup before the asynchronous setup. The regression remains in the same serialized suite.
All six affected preflight checks pass; the wiring-tool check executed 13 tests with no skips. Native execution and final-head CI are still pending.
Verified the historical red evidence in run 40394452100: one test executed and failed with workspacePublishes = 4 and workspaceContentBody = 1 when the broad publication was restored.
All six CodeRabbit findings have existing reasoned replies and are resolved; no unresolved human or Greptile thread was returned by the review-thread query. The local structured reviewer found no correctness defect before the extraction. Its generic legacy-observation policy finding is not applicable to this specific oracle: classic Workspace really is ObservableObject, and observing its publisher is required to detect a send without a property mutation, including hidden workspaces. An @observable mock would not exercise that production behavior. The assertion is retained, with its ownership rationale beside it. The low docstring-coverage suggestion does not justify changing unrelated APIs; the moved handler documents its lifecycle contract.
This is a progress record, not the ready-for-review sign-off. Final-head regression execution and CI must finish first.

Ready for review: root cause was every shared agent-index reload sending an unconditional Workspace publication, invalidating pane content while idle; fix removes that broad publication, retains synchronous MainActor restored-agent reconciliation, and keeps menu/index consumers on their existing targeted observation paths; tests include the historical red probe (one test executed, 4 workspace publications and 1 pane-body evaluation with the send restored), the macOS 15 native 25-test pass across visibility and observer-retirement suites and final-head macOS 26 CI pass of 34 tests across five suites, six scoped preflight checks, file-size/wiring checks, and the controller macOS build. Confidence high.
All current PR checks are green; GitHub reports CLEAN and MERGEABLE with no pending or failed checks.
Current head: 79671bf, including main ebe7366 without conflicts. Native source/tests/project are byte-identical to d319d36, which was independently reviewed (no actionable correctness findings), fleet-built, and tested in run 40734289457 (23 visibility + 2 retirement tests). All review threads are resolved. No assertion, timeout, retry policy, packaging, signing or CLI behavior was weakened.
Final-head macOS admission, warning-budget validation and CLI binary smoke checks passed. The agent-chat guard retry passed 125 tests with zero failures.
The initial agent-chat guard stalled during dependency installation and never reached type-checking; its CI retry retained the same code, lockfile, assertions and time limit. After all native work completed, I cancelled a runnerless late-placement job to permit that failed-job rerun; the successful compile was retained. The generic local observation-policy warning was reviewed and rejected for this oracle: the real classic Workspace is ObservableObject, and its publication-without-mutation bug cannot be exercised with an @observable mock. The actual production publisher and all body-evaluation assertions remain covered.

Verdict: PASS. There are no blocking findings.
Checked and fine:
Readers of the agent index. None of them depended on the removed Workspace publish:
The Bonsplit tab context menu (Fork Conversation) reads availability from its provider when it opens, and its refresh handler covers the "refreshing" state.
The command palette, the sidebar agent-profile tooltip and SessionIndexStore each observe the notification themselves.
Restored-agent state lives in the @ObservableRestoredAgentLifecycleCoordinator.
No pane-content view reads SharedLiveAgentIndex in its body.
Threading. Every post comes from the @MainActor index, and the observer uses queue: .main, so MainActor.assumeIsolated cannot trap. Running the handler synchronously inside the post does not re-enter.
Lifetime. The observer captures [weak self] and is removed both in deinit and on retirement.
pbxproj. The new source file is in the app target, the new test file is in cmuxTests, and no IDs are duplicated.
Regression test. It drives the real window, the real Workspace publisher and the real notification. It does not assert on source text, and it went red on the old code (run 40394452100).
Non-blocking findings and resolution:
The retirement test checks sharedLiveAgentIndexObserver == nil instead of behavior. Not changed. A behavioral version would need to seed the process-wide SharedLiveAgentIndex.shared with a completed-agent entry. The handler's isRetiredFromOwningTabManager guard also backs up the observer removal. Left as a follow-up.
sharedLiveAgentIndexObserver was widened from private to private(set) only for tests (REVIEW.md §8). Not changed, for the same reason as 1. It would go away with that follow-up.
No test drives restored-agent reconciliation through the notification. This gap predates the PR, and the handler moved line for line. Not changed.
The tab icon does not refresh after reconciliation flips a panel to running. This is pre-existing: the removed publish never refreshed the icon either. Not changed.
Not run locally: Swift build and tests. This Mac does not run heavy builds; the PR's CI on this head is the build and test evidence.
… pane
Ported from upstream manaflow-ai#22748 (ee50da9): "Stop shared agent-index reloads from re-rendering every pane (manaflow-ai#22748)".
Adapted: the fork's index posts no per-panel userInfo and its entry lookup takes the panel's affinity directory, so the extracted handler reconciles all completed restored agents as before, just without objectWillChange. Upstream's window-hosted test needs Cloud loading workspaces; replaced by WorkspaceSharedAgentIndexReloadTests (no publish after a reload, mutation-checked).

Fixes #22703.
Summary
SharedLiveAgentIndexreloads at most every 5 s while agent hooks write the hook store (~/.cmuxterm), and each full reload posts.sharedLiveAgentIndexDidChangewithoutuserInfo. EveryWorkspaceanswered with an unconditionalobjectWillChange.send(), soWorkspaceContentViewre-ran and rebuilt every pane: oneGhosttyTerminalView.updateNSViewand portal reconciliation per terminal, while the user was idle. On a window with many panes that work, and the SwiftUI graph update it drives, is the main-thread time in the no-app-frame hang reports. The publish was added (v0.64.18) so Bonsplit's tab bar re-read Fork Conversation availability. The tab context menu now reads availability through its provider and refresh handler when it opens, and restored-agent reconciliation mutates the
@ObservableRestoredAgentLifecycleCoordinator, so no view needs the workspace publish. The observer keeps reconciling restored agents and no longer publishes.Evidence
From Sentry (400 full events of CMUXTERM-MACOS-3ZVC, 3,000 light events, 14-day rates by release):
_applicationNameChanged, SkyLight display state) and are outside cmux. The rest are SwiftUI graph updates, layout and display-list work.geometryPublicationper surface within 200 ms: every pane'supdateNSViewran. Bursts recur every few seconds at idle, then breadcrumbs stop and socket main-hop timeouts follow.Ruled out: the issue's
@AppStorage/UserDefaults lead. In a standalone check on macOS 26.6,@AppStorageviews did not re-evaluate for unrelated-key or same-value writes, and 20k–40k observers cost milliseconds per write.Scope
This PR stops the idle reload bursts. #22901 owns the other half of #22703: the Bonsplit split root leaked one
withObservationTrackingregistration per render, so each burst re-rendered the tree many times (manaflow-ai/bonsplit#291). No files overlap. Defaults chosen here: keep this PR to the cmux-side publish rather than folding in the Bonsplit bump, because the Bonsplit pointer has its own merge order in the integration PR.Testing
WorkspaceContentViewVisibilityTests/testSharedAgentIndexReloadDoesNotReevaluatePaneContentsets up three workspaces in a controlled project root and awaits each root's discovery. It then hosts the main window, waits for it to go quiet, and posts the full-reload.sharedLiveAgentIndexDidChange. It expects no workspace publish and noWorkspaceContentVieworContentViewbody evaluation. The observer now delivers on the main queue and handles the change beforepostreturns (SharedLiveAgentIndexis@MainActor). The test therefore asserts at a causal point instead of draining for queued tasks, and production code has no test seam.WorkspaceProcessWideObserverRetirementTestschecks that retirement removes the observer.Regression proof: run 40394452100 executed one test with the unconditional publication restored and failed with
workspacePublishes = 4andworkspaceContentBody = 1. The current test preserves those assertions, posts the real notification, waits for each workspace's project-root discovery, and explicitly displays the hosted window. It lives in an extension of the same serialized suite; it is wired intocmuxTests. The previous verified
