Summary

A transient cmux-tui control disconnect no longer permanently stops iOS topology observation. The provider now reconnects its existing session control with a single bounded backoff loop, keeps stable terminal ownership, and forces a fresh workspace snapshot after a generation gap so stale rows cannot win a race.

Testing

  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --all — passed.
  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --only swift-syntax --swift-changed origin/main — passed (4 files).
  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --only test-wiring — passed.
  • ./scripts/lint-ios-package-conventions.sh — passed with existing repository warnings only.
  • python3 scripts/localization_defaults.py — passed (0 mismatches).
  • Hosted iOS package, simulator build, iPhone, iPad, and aggregate iOS tests passed for the latest head.
  • Added provider-level stale-generation and bounded-churn tests; reconnect watcher handoff and post-open subscription backoff are covered.
  • python3 scripts/check-workspace-package-groups.py --check — passed.
  • python3 scripts/lint-feature-flags.py — passed.
  • Focused swift test --package-path Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileShell --filter MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnectTests was not run: the prescribed nx-remote host session failed before job start because cmux-lawrence-2 DNS was unavailable. The PR iOS package lane is the required compile/test evidence.

Issues

Issue lifecycle

Impact map

  • Source of truth and owner: MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider owns one reconnect coordinator and one active CmuxTUIControl per session; CmuxTUIControl.subscribe() remains the event source.
  • Direct callers and sibling paths inspected: MobileSSHHostProviders, MobileSSHComputers, and the separate tmux topology/restart provider path; cmux-tui workspace and terminal resource IDs remain the ownership keys.
  • Cross-surface effects: reconnect stays within the cached provider/session, closes superseded controls before installing a replacement, and cancels observation/backoff from close(); no UI strings, localization, persistence schema, or release metadata changed.
  • Tests and evidence: the new package tests simulate disconnect → automatic control replacement → later topology event, assert capped backoff, and prove stale generations cannot clear or admit a newer snapshot.
  • Residual risk: live SSH transport behavior still needs the hosted iOS package lane and the affected iOS connectivity-soak workload; no local app build was run because Swift jobs must use the hosted route.

Proof

No visual proof applies; this is an iOS connectivity and topology lifecycle change. Hosted iPhone and iPad simulator lanes exercise the affected package and test target.

Checklist

  • Reconnect ownership stays single-flight and closes superseded controls.
  • Stale generations cannot admit events or clear newer snapshots.
  • Recovery and generation-stability retries are bounded and cancellation-aware.
  • Hosted iOS package, build, simulator, and aggregate test lanes are required before merge.

Changelog

Fixed: iOS cmux-tui topology observation now reconnects after a transient control transport disconnect and refreshes from a current workspace snapshot.

Mergeability

  • Base SHA: 6dc229c
  • Head SHA: e22f1c5
  • Conflict-only gate: mergeable and clean; all required iOS lanes passed.

Summary by cubic

Fixes iOS cmux-tui topology observation so a transient control transport disconnect no longer permanently stops updates. The provider now reconnects its session control with a bounded backoff loop, shares in-flight reconnect attempts among concurrent callers, keeps stable terminal ownership, and forces a fresh workspace snapshot after a generation gap so stale rows cannot win a race.

  • Reconnecting caps retry delay at 30 seconds and stops after three attempts so dead owners fall out of discovery; a control is replaced only after the old one is closed, and backoff sleeps are injectable for fast tests.
  • Added an explicit handshake with a client name and 30-second timeout on session connect and 10-second on socket connect.
  • Tracks control generations so events and list results from superseded controls are discarded, and listWorkspaces retries up to three times when the generation changes mid-request before failing the snapshot.
  • Adds package tests covering disconnect → reconnection, bounded backoff, dead-owner recovery exhaustion, stale-generation gating, and snapshot retry bounds.

Closes #21001.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Reliability
    • The mobile SSH interface reconnects automatically after control-channel interruptions and resumes receiving workspace updates when the connection is restored.
    • Reconnection attempts use increasing delays, up to 30 seconds, and stop after a limited number of tries.
    • Failed operations trigger a reconnection attempt and are retried once.
    • Workspace listings retry if the connection changes mid-request, helping ensure results reflect a consistent connection.
    • Updates from replaced connections are ignored, and a fresh workspace snapshot is requested when needed.
    • Connection setup uses a bounded handshake timeout.

Explanation

Issue [#21001] requires automatic reconnect after disconnect, bounded cancellation-safe backoff, and generation-safe resnapshot behavior. MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect replaces disconnected controls, limits recovery attempts, shares in-flight connection work, and cancels watching and recovery in close(). MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyGate rejects stale generations and requests a fresh snapshot after a generation gap. The added tests cover later event delivery, retry bounds, cancellation, and stale-generation handling.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The provider, reconnect coordinator, topology gate, connection handshake, and tests directly support issue [#21001]. Operation-failure recovery uses the same session-owned reconnect behavior. The reviewed changes contain no unrelated UI, localization, persistence, release, or feature work.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

The diff does not introduce a prohibited Cloud session or manual-renderer path. MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect shares one current control and coalesces opening/recovery tasks (MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect.swift:73-111); recovery creates a replacement only after the current control fails (:158-229). The provider reuses its existing authenticated SSHConnection for session channels (MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider.swift:79-94), which matches the rule's allowance for reconnect after transport failure and multiplexed logical streams. Snapshot requests occur only after a generation gap (:100-107). No changed file adds local wrapper installation, PTY-readiness gating, manual Ghostty admission, input replay, or auth/idempotency/revision/lease changes.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only four iOS cmux-tui topology files. It does not modify the rule-scoped browser automation files, and the diff adds no browser commands, WebKit waits, worker-router changes, or policy-test changes.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

PASS. The reviewed production diff only adds @MainActor topology reconnect/generation logic and updates async cmux-tui control operations. It does not add or move RestorableAgentSessionIndex.load(), agent stores, transcripts, trajectories, JSON/JSONL history parsing, directory scans, or per-record syscalls onto an interactive path. The only JSONSerialization/Data(contentsOf:) code in the provider is unchanged installer code outside the diff.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

No cache substitution matches the rule. The changed provider still performs the authoritative server read through control.listWorkspaces() (MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider.swift:137-139); the cached control is only a live connection owner, and the base already cached that control. The new snapshot logic handles generation gaps by rejecting stale listings and retrying when the generation changes (lines 135-141), then requesting a fresh snapshot after recovery (lines 104-107). No changed persistence, history, or undo consumer trusts a cached value.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only four Swift files under Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileShell. The rule explicitly scopes this check to TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, and non-Swift build/runtime scripts, and states that Swift timing is covered by a separate check. Therefore this check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

Pass. The production diff adds no DispatchQueue/DispatchGroup, Combine state, or completion-handler API. Its new Tasks are stored as watchTask, openingTask, and recoveryTask, awaited where shared, and cancelled by close() or replacement. The provider uses async/await and AsyncStream for the reconnect flow.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

No Swift @concurrent violation is introduced. The new reconnect coordinator is intentionally @MainActor because it owns lifecycle state and UI callbacks. Its async work awaits actor-isolated CmuxTUIRemote and CmuxTUIControl operations, which provide explicit actor hops for network I/O. The diff adds no nonisolated async function requiring @concurrent, no synchronous @concurrent function, and no direct actor-isolated state access from an @concurrent function.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only four Swift source/test files. It does not modify Package.swift, Package.resolved, .gitignore, workflow files, or Xcode package references. The existing CmuxMobileShell manifest already references CmuxMobileSSH, so no new dependency pin requires a lockfile diff.

Full details: Cmux Swift Logging

Explanation

The Swift diff adds no print, debugPrint, dump, NSLog, file/stdout logging, or Logger declarations. The new reconnect and gate code only invokes control callbacks and backoff logic. Existing stderrString references in the provider are unchanged. The logging rule therefore has no violation.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

The production diff adds reconnect coordination, topology gating, and tests. It adds no alerts, command output, API error bodies, recovery copy, or error-to-string formatting. The new CmuxTUIError.closed is an internal control-flow error, and clientName: "cmux-ios" is a connection parameter, not user-facing text. No changed text creates a concrete path to a cmux end user or exposes prohibited details.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The PR adds no new user-facing Swift copy or localization keys. Its only added string literal, "cmux-ios", is an existing protocol client-name default and remains an exact metadata token. The changed files contain no string-catalog, web-message, or locale changes, and the existing L10n.string UI text is not materially changed.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only the cmux-tui provider, topology gate, reconnect coordinator, and tests. The changed Swift files import no SwiftUI and add no View, body, @Observable, ObservableObject, @Published, property-wrapper state, GeometryReader, lazy/list row, or ForEach code. The new Task calls are lifecycle and recovery operations, not render-time state writes. The check is therefore inapplicable.

Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts

Explanation

The pull request changes only iOS cmux-tui provider, topology gate, reconnect, and test code. The reviewed diff contains no NSWindow, NSPanel, NSWindowController, SwiftUI Window, WindowGroup, or auxiliary-window registration code. The auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

The PR changes four paths, all under the iOS source or test trees. The two added files are ASCII Swift source and test files with normal 100644 modes. No logs, media, caches, temp folders, build output, package downloads, or broad artifact directories appear in the diff.

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

No prohibited test/debug seam was added. The changed production Swift files contain no #if DEBUG or test-build guard, and no debug…, …ForTesting, …TestHook, or similar member. MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect uses injected operations for its production caller in MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider; its tests exercise behavior rather than read private state through a test-only accessor.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is on-topic and mostly complete. It includes the required Summary, Testing, Changelog, Proof, and Checklist sections, explains the behavior and implementation, records test results, and documents the unavailable focused test and remaining soak-workload limitation.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

The prior actor-isolation failure remains unresolved. The new MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect is explicitly @MainActor (line 12), so its pure retry-policy declarations at lines 21-30 are implicitly MainActor-isolated. initialBackoff, maximumBackoff, maximumRecoveryAttempts, and backoff(forAttempt:) only compute value-based retry policy and do not access coordinator state. This is a changed-code match for the repository rule covering pure helpers and value-only utilities. Nearby package code uses nonisolated static let and nonisolated static func for the same pattern.

Resolution

Keep MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect and its mutable coordinator state @MainActor. Mark initialBackoff, maximumBackoff, and maximumRecoveryAttempts as nonisolated static let constants, and mark backoff(forAttempt:) as nonisolated static func. Re-run the Swift actor-isolation and package compile checks.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

The production diff still injects ContinuousClock().sleep(for:) in MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider.makeTopologyReconnect() and awaits it between failed reconnect attempts in MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect.runRecovery(). This is shipped retry-backoff synchronization. The rule rejects sleep-based retry backoff, including async clock sleeps. The prior failure remains valid.

Resolution

Replace the production ContinuousClock().sleep(for:) retry loop with an approved cancellation-aware scheduler or timer abstraction that waits for retry delivery or transport closure. Keep cancellation tied to close() and transport state. Do not use ContinuousClock.sleep, Task.sleep, or an equivalent direct delay in this reconnect path.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

The previous complexity failure remains. MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider.swift:131-142 adds an unbounded while true; each retry calls control.listWorkspaces().map(Self.workspace). Self.workspace scans each workspace's screens, terminals, and browsers at lines 147-192. A generation change can repeat this full mapping indefinitely across successive reconnects. maximumRecoveryAttempts == 3 bounds one recovery sequence, not the outer listing loop. The base code performed one mapping pass, and the new tests do not cover listing retries or about 1000 workspaces.

Resolution

Bound generation-stability retries to a small documented count and throw an explicit transient error when stability is not reached. Prefer a generation-consistent snapshot API that maps the collection once. Add a test or benchmark with about 1000 workspaces that verifies the retry bound.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The PR still places independently testable topology domain logic in the broad CmuxMobileShell target. MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect is a 235-line generic coordinator that imports only Foundation and CmuxMobileSSH, injects open/subscribe/close/transport/sleep operations, and is tested with a UI-free FakeControl. MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyGate is a pure generation and snapshot state machine. Both remain under Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileShell/Sources/CmuxMobileShell, the tests use @testable import CmuxMobileShell, and the PR changes no Package.swift file. This matches the explicit package-boundary failure condition.

Resolution

Extract MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect and MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyGate, with their focused tests, into a small SwiftPM target such as CmuxMobileSSHTopology that depends on CmuxMobileSSH. Expose a reconnect coordinator or small control-operation protocol as the first public API. Keep MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider responsible for SSH/session wiring, workspace mapping, and callback composition.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

The diff introduces a production timing-based repair path. MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect.runRecovery loops over maximumRecoveryAttempts and awaits injected backoff sleeps. MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider supplies ContinuousClock().sleep, so this is not test-only synchronization. The path retries after fixed 1-, 2-, and capped-delay intervals instead of receiving an SSH/session owner readiness transition. This directly violates the rule's prohibition on timing repair paths and leaves delayed or exhausted recovery states representable. The coordinator is a clear control owner, but it does not remove the architectural timing dependency.

Resolution

Move reconnect readiness and retry policy to the single SSH/session recovery owner. Expose an event-driven owner/transport readiness transition to MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnect. Remove the production Sleep dependency and fixed-delay retry loop. Preserve control ownership, generation validation, cancellation, and bounded failure state in the coordinator. First migrate the current transportIsOpen and open-failure loop to owner state transitions, then test disconnect, owner-unavailable, recovery, and close transitions without wall-clock delays.

CI fast guards passes on e22f1c5dc3 (https://github.com/manaflow-ai/cmux/actions/runs/38871079773). This covers only the fast guards, not CI: CI's result is the ci-status check, and the CI failure attribution comment names any failing test.

Retry after waiting for an in-flight recovery.

When a replacement watcher fails while recoveryTask is active, it awaits that task and returns. It can therefore leave the current control installed without any watcher. Clear the task before it completes, then recheck the watcher’s cancellation, stopped, control, and generation state before starting recovery again.

Update recover(from:generation:) so a watcher that finds an active recovery
rechecks cancellation, stopped state, and control/generation validity after
awaiting it, then retries recovery if still current. Clear recoveryTask when
runRecovery completes, before its task finishes, so a replacement watcher can
start recovery rather than leaving the current control unwatched.

Carry post-open subscription failures into the reconnect backoff.

runRecovery resets its local attempt counter when connectFresh() installs a control. The new watcher can then fail in control.subscribe() and start another recovery before any backoff. Track consecutive post-open subscription failures separately, delay the next open with backoff(forAttempt:), and reset the count when the subscription produces a non-disconnect event. Keep this correction separate from the recoveryTask watcher handoff.

Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileShell/Sources/CmuxMobileShell/MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider.swift:126-137
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Add a provider-level generation-race test.

MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnectTests.FakeControl tests only the reconnect coordinator. staleGenerationCannotClearOrAdmitNewSnapshot tests only MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyGate. No package test invokes MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider.listWorkspaces() through the cmux-tui listing path.

Add the test in MobileSSHCmuxTUITopologyReconnectTests.swift. Suspend the first listing, advance the control generation, and assert that the provider discards the stale rows and returns rows from the current listing. Without this test, removing the guard at MobileSSHCmuxTUIProvider.swift:136 would not fail an existing assertion.
