Summary

The 0.65.2 RC was built, signed and notarized, but it never reached the RC feed. The feed still serves 0.65.0-rc.

The publish job of auto-resume-nightly-notarization.yml (run 38372915695) failed with source continuation is older than the published release; refusing stale replacement. Since #18553 (Oct 8), the job requires the published commit to be an ancestor of the new source commit. Each RC line is a new rc/vX.Y.Z branch cut from main, so the published 0.65.0 RC commit (on rc/v0.65.0) is never an ancestor of rc/v0.65.2. Every new RC line fails this check.

RC build numbers come from GITHUB_RUN_ID and only grow. The build-number check just before the ancestor check already refuses an older RC. The ancestor check now runs for nightly only.

Verification

  • actionlint on the workflow: the same 18 existing shellcheck notes as main, no new ones.
  • tests/test_nightly_publication_marker.py, test_nightly_resume_tracks.py, test_nightly_artifact_alias.py and test_nightly_notarization_poll_loop.py pass (run with PyYAML through uv).
  • After the merge, the next rc/v0.65.2 push (the sign-in fix, auth: send Hexclave header names to Stack; show sign-in error details #20270) runs the RC publish path.

Summary by cubic

Fixes the RC publish path so a new RC line (e.g. 0.65.2) can be released instead of being refused as stale. Each RC line is cut from main, so the published commit of a previous RC is never its ancestor; the build-number check already rejects older RCs, so the ancestry check now runs for nightly only.

  • RC lines compare MARKETING_VERSION instead of ancestry, refusing a source older than the published RC so a later push to an older RC branch cannot replace a newer line.
  • RC release notes collect from the merge base of the two lines when their compare diverges, and include PRs merged to both the RC branch and main.

Written for commit c525203. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • RC releases now check that version information is available and that the source version is not older than the published version before proceeding.
    • RC release notes now include relevant merged changes from both the RC branch and main, and can account for diverged commit histories when comparing changes.
    • Publication checks for other release channels continue to prevent publishing from a source that does not include the published commit.

The RC publish step required the published RC commit to be an ancestor of
the new source. Each RC line is a new rc/vX.Y.Z branch cut from main, so
the 0.65.2 RC (rc/v0.65.2 at 14879be) was refused because the published
0.65.0 RC came from rc/v0.65.0. RC build numbers are run-derived and only
grow, and the build check before it already refuses an older RC, so the
ancestry check now applies to nightly only.

📝 Walkthrough

RC continuation checks now compare marketing versions. Release-note collection retries qualifying diverged RC comparisons from their merge base and includes qualifying PRs targeting either the RC branch or main.

Changes: RC release handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
RC continuation validation
.github/workflows/auto-resume-nightly-notarization.yml
For RC continuations, the workflow rejects missing marketing versions or a source version below the published version. Other channels retain the ancestry check.
RC release-note collection
scripts/ci/nightly_release_notes.py
For a diverged comparison on the first page of an rc/ branch, collection retries from the merge base when it exists and differs from the published baseline. PR selection includes merged PRs targeting that branch or main when their merge commit is in the compared commit set.

Explanation

The PR materially changes user-facing rendered release notes without a locale-specific source. scripts/ci/nightly_release_notes.py:52-58 changes the comparison range, and :91-92 adds PRs merged to main; the workflow generates and publishes nightly-notes.published.md as GitHub release notes at .github/workflows/auto-resume-nightly-notarization.yml:959-963,1028-1031. No next-intl source or locale message updates accompany this change. The affected locale files are web/messages/{en,ja,zh-CN,zh-TW,ko,de,es,fr,it,da,pl,ru,bs,ar,no,pt-BR,th,tr,km,uk}.json.

Resolution

Route the changed release-note content and user-facing generated data through a locale-specific source. Add matching translations for every supported locale in all 20 listed web/messages/*.json files, or keep this PR from changing the rendered release-note output. CI comments and stderr diagnostics do not require localization.

Review findings on #20331:
- nightly_release_notes.py also required ancestry and would fail the RC
after the DMG aliases moved. For an rc/* branch whose compare is
diverged, it summarizes from the merge base of the two lines.
- Without ancestry, a later push to an older RC branch would replace a
newer RC line (its run-derived build number is higher). RC publication
now refuses a lower MARKETING_VERSION than the published RC.

Correctness review: findings and resolution

Reviewed by a subagent, correctness first, in 2 passes.

Severity Finding Resolution
High scripts/ci/nightly_release_notes.py also required ancestry (compare status ahead). It would have failed the RC after the DMG aliases had already moved, and every retry would fail the same way. 0a6d2ed: for an rc/* branch whose compare is diverged, notes are summarized from the merge base of the two lines (one recursion, guarded by merge_base != base).
Medium Without ancestry, a later push to an older RC branch would replace a newer RC line, because its run-derived build number is higher. 0a6d2ed: for an RC, publication refuses a source whose MARKETING_VERSION is lower than the published RC's. Nightly keeps the ancestry check.
Medium RC notes listed only PRs whose base is the rc branch. c525203: for rc/*, PRs merged to main in the compared range are included.
Low The git show | sed …;q pipe could exit 141 under pipefail if more output came after the match. c525203: the project file is read into a variable first.
Low An empty version gave a misleading message. c525203: the job prints that the version could not be read.
Medium (kept) The current rc release body has no cmux-published-build marker yet, so the build-number check does not run until one RC publishes through this path. Self-healing: the first publish writes the marker.

Checked against real commits by running the extracted step: published 0.65.0 (77eea5f) with source 0.65.2 (14879be) exits 0. The reverse exits 1 with the refusal message. Nightly with diverged commits exits 1. tests/test_nightly_*.py (7 files) pass. actionlint reports the same 18 existing notes as main.
