Update popover: show the top changes and a readable version line - #17452
teamleaderleo wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
The update popover showed the raw version string ("0.65.0-nightly.3737789529201")
and the download size, which do not help decide between Install and Later.
It now shows one line ("Nightly · Today at 12:20 PM · 23 changes", or
"0.65.1 · Oct 5" for stable), up to five changes from the feed's
<description> written by scripts/ci/nightly_release_notes.py, and
"and N more" linking to the full notes. The Size row is gone. Skip, Later,
and Install and Relaunch are unchanged.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not link nightly changes to a stable release.
If a nightly item has no fullReleaseNotesURL, this fallback extracts 0.65.0 from 0.65.0-nightly.3737789529201. It links “and N more” to the stable v0.65.0 tag, not to the nightly changes. Use the appcast URL as the source of truth for nightly release notes. As a first migration cut, show unlinked text when that URL is absent, and cover that case with a test. This prevents other nightly versions from inheriting the same wrong destination.
As per coding guidelines, a fix must “name the invariant, source of truth, or state transition that makes the whole class impossible.”

official Sparkle 2.8.1 SUAppcastItem itemDescription generate_appcast description HTML appcast format
💡 Result:
For **Sparkle 2.8.1**, `SUAppcastItem.itemDescription` is the inline release-note text parsed from an appcast item’s `<description>` element. Sparkle treats it as HTML by default; `itemDescriptionFormat` can be `html` or `plain-text`, and is read from `sparkle:descriptionFormat`. ([sparkle-project.org](https://sparkle-project.org/documentation/api-reference/Classes/SUAppcastItem.html?utm_source=openai))
That’s distinct from `generate_appcast`’s HTML-file convention: if an `.html` file has the same base name as an update archive, the tool adds it as a **`sparkle:releaseNotesLink`**—an external release-notes URL, not embedded `itemDescription` HTML. ([github.com](https://github.com/sparkle-project/sparkle-project.github.io/blob/master/documentation/index.md?utm_source=openai))
The current official API docs and generator docs aren’t version-pinned, so they don’t independently establish every implementation detail for 2.8.1. The 2.8.1 changelog confirms that release, but doesn’t mention a change to these release-notes behaviors. ([github.com](https://github.com/sparkle-project/Sparkle/blob/2.x/CHANGELOG?utm_source=openai))

Sparkle 2.8.1 tag SUAppcastItem itemDescription XML description HTML SUAppcastItem.m
💡 Result:
In **Sparkle tag `2.8.1`**, `SUAppcastItem.m` reads the appcast `<description>` into `itemDescription`; it does not inspect the contents and convert HTML to plain text. The parser accepts either a structured description—with `content` and an optional `format`—or a legacy string. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sparkle-project/Sparkle/2.8.1/Sparkle/SUAppcastItem.m))
- For structured descriptions, `sparkle:descriptionFormat` is lowercased. `html`, `plain-text`, and `markdown` are accepted; if omitted, the format defaults to `html`. An unrecognized format logs a warning and also defaults to `html`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sparkle-project/Sparkle/2.8.1/Sparkle/SUAppcastItem.m))
- A legacy string description is stored as-is, with format `html`. If there’s no description, both properties are `nil`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sparkle-project/Sparkle/2.8.1/Sparkle/SUAppcastItem.m))
- Thus HTML release notes can be embedded in `<description>`—commonly inside CDATA—and `itemDescriptionFormat` indicates how the description should be treated. ([github.com](https://github.com/sparkle-project/sparkle-project.github.io/blob/master/documentation/publishing/index.md?utm_source=openai))
This is based on the exact `2.8.1` source tag, not the current API documentation. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sparkle-project/Sparkle/2.8.1/Sparkle/SUAppcastItem.m))

Accept only nightly change-title lines.
Sparkle 2.8.1 can pass HTML in an appcast <description> through as itemDescription. If UpdateSummary.parse receives a non-nightly line such as <p>Release notes</p>, it appends the line and counts it as a change. UpdatePopoverView displays both the line and the count.
The nightly producer always appends (#number) to product titles. Require that suffix before appending a title; this preserves generated nightly titles and excludes other description formats.

What someone needs from this popover
The update popover opens when cmux finds a new build. The person reading it wants to know whether to install now or later, and three things decide that:
The popover on main shows
Version: 0.65.0-nightly.3737789529201,Size: 236.5 MB, andReleased: Oct 5, 2026. None of these answers the questions. The version is a build number, and the download size says nothing about what changed. To find out what changed, you have to open the release notes in a browser. What this changes
This is an exploration, not a merge proposal. Main went back to the 0.64.25 popover twice (#16357, #17368), so the diff stays small and easy to compare against that baseline.

Before (real release builds checking the real feeds):
In the nightly still, another app's "Configuration Errors" alert on the shared mini covers the right edge. The Version, Size, and Released rows are still readable.
After (this PR at da39c2f, a tagged Debug build from the fleet):
How the "after" stills were made. Debug builds never run a manual Sparkle check (#6292), so the popover is forced with
