fix(cloud): eliminate first-machine connection cold start - #16787
Conversation
Await one shared provider and database warm-up before create admission, reuse the per-process Freestyle client, and expose admission and provider initialization timings so an idle invocation cannot race its first paid request. Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. 📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe VM API now starts database and Freestyle warm-ups at defined points in request handling and records connection initialization and admission timings. The startup benchmark measures VM row readiness before endpoint issuance. The route also exports a 600-second maximum duration. ChangesVM Startup Flow

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to VM creation for non-Freestyle providers can be delayed by an unrelated Freestyle connection check, which may add seconds when that check is slow. The startup benchmark also reports empty attach-attempt counts. Resolve the create delay before merging. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to Authentication and tenant checks remain ahead of VM provisioning, and provider warm-up is moved behind authentication. The new shared client cache assumes provider credentials and account settings remain fixed within a running server process. That lifecycle assumption remains unverified; no externally exploitable authorization bypass was established. Retained concerns

Addressed the two actionable review comments in cb698ea: provider warm-up is awaited only after provider selection and only for the target provider, and the startup benchmark now summarizes attachEndpointAttempts. Focused tests, typecheck, and benchmark syntax checks pass. |

d06000d fix(cloud): eliminate first-machine connection cold start (manaflow-ai#16787) 091d870 fix(ci): remove stale Cloud row argument (manaflow-ai#16785)
Summary
The first Cloud machine after an idle period could spend several seconds establishing the provider connection while that latency was hidden inside VM provisioning. Subsequent machines reused the process connection and completed much faster.
This change warms the provider connection after authentication, coalesces concurrent probes, bounds reuse, caches provider clients, and records connection, provider, durable-row, and attach stages separately. Non-target providers do not wait behind the provider warm-up.
Testing
Executed:
bun test tests/freestyle-request-timing.test.ts tests/vm-timings.test.ts tests/vm-route-auth.test.ts(113 passed)bun run typechecknode --check scripts/cloud-vm/bench-vm-startup.mjsAdded regression coverage for single-flight warm-up, reuse expiry, timing boundaries, and authoritative VM row readiness.
Changelog
Fixed: reduce first-machine startup latency by warming the provider connection before provisioning.
Demo video
Not applicable. This is a backend timing change; the startup benchmark and Server-Timing response provide the reproducible evidence.
