Summary

When a Cloud terminal and a local terminal share a workspace, the Cloud composer can receive keyboard focus while the focus ring stays on the local pane during a SwiftUI host callback rebind. Composer focus now selects its live owning pane directly and preserves the composer as first responder. Background workspace callbacks cannot change selection.

This covers the composer path alongside the terminal input fix in #16271 and the middle-click fix in #16513.

Testing

  • Swift syntax check passed for all three changed files.
  • Test wiring and git diff --check passed.
  • Added regressions for mixed local/Cloud composer focus, draft and responder preservation through a run-loop turn, and background workspace selection. Native tests and live app verification have not run.
  • No new user-facing strings.

Changelog

Fixed: Focusing a Cloud terminal's text box also moves the pane focus ring to Cloud.

Demo Video

No live capture; the regression exercises AppKit composer focus without the SwiftUI host callback.

Checklist

  • Behavior changes have added or updated tests
  • Localization audited; no user-facing strings added

Summary by cubic

Fixes Cloud composer focus convergence so the pane focus ring follows the keyboard target when a Cloud terminal shares a workspace with a local one.

  • Composer focus now resolves its live owning pane directly and keeps the composer as first responder, instead of relying on a SwiftUI host callback that can be mid-rebind.
  • Routes selection through the workspace coordinator with a standard trigger so no terminal first-responder follow-up steals focus back from the text box; wires the new onFocusTextBox callback through docked, hosted, and remote tmux panels.
  • Background workspace callbacks can no longer change pane selection.
  • Adds regression tests that exercise the production composer callback for mixed local/Cloud focus, draft and responder preservation through a run-loop turn, and background workspace selection.

Written for commit babb42f. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Focusing a panel’s text box now selects the corresponding pane and keeps the text box ready for input, including in docked and hosted panels.
    • Cloud composer drafts are preserved when focusing the text box.
    • Focusing a Cloud composer in a background workspace no longer changes the selected workspace or source panel.
    • Text-box focus now activates the appropriate pane in remote tmux views as well.

Panel text-box focus now invokes a callback that surface hosts use to focus the relevant panel. Workspace routing checks input activity and panel existence before forwarding the requested trigger. Tests cover Cloud panel focus and background-workspace behavior.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 09b52

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated changed reachability is a local composer-focus event reaching its host's existing pane-focus operations. The inspected change does not establish new attacker control over terminal identities, credentials, or command submission.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — A captured input-active value alone cannot authorize focus in a switched workspace: the downstream method independently checks the owning manager's current selected workspace. Missing panel IDs are rejected, and repetition is a no-op after selection converges.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The ID-only callback check is not new, and the inspected same-ID browser and loading-panel replacements do not demonstrate replacement of a live composer by a different terminal owner. Stale callback cleanup remains a validation gap, not a demonstrated introduced security condition.

Addressed the architecture review in cd215e072e1.

Composer focus now crosses an explicit onFocusTextBox bridge. TerminalPanel only updates its text-box state; the workspace coordinator owns pane selection and uses the standard trigger so the follow-up terminal responder path cannot steal focus back. Canvas, dock, and remote-mirror hosts pass their own composer focus action as well. Swift syntax and diff checks pass.

cmuxTests/SurfacePaneFactoryFocusTests.swift:151-190
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Wire the foreground test to the host focus callback.

TextBoxInputTextView.becomeFirstResponder() invokes only its installed onFocusTextBox closure. The fixture installs only cloudPanel.textBoxDidBecomeFocused(), which does not select a workspace pane. The production pane-selection call is in WorkspaceContentView's host callback. Therefore the Cloud-pane assertions cannot pass through this fixture, and the test does not cover the new .standard route.

Mount TerminalPanelView or pass the equivalent production host callback into the fixture. Keep a separate no-host test only if that fallback behavior is required.

Follow-up 0530bef1f38 fixes the compile-admission error reported on cd215e072e1: the explicit composer-focus bridge now receives isWorkspaceInputActive from WorkspaceContentView instead of referencing an outer-scope property from the host view.

The seven touched Swift files pass the local syntax preflight and git diff --check.

🔵 Trivial · Exercise the active WorkspacePanelContentHostView… · SurfacePaneFactoryFocusTests.swift:151-190

cmuxTests/SurfacePaneFactoryFocusTests.swift:151-190
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Exercise the active WorkspacePanelContentHostView callback.

cloudComposerFocusSelectsItsPane assigns textView.onFocusTextBox directly to cloudPanel.textBoxDidBecomeFocused(). It does not invoke the new host callback. The background test also calls the panel method directly, so neither test covers workspace.focusPanelFromTerminalInput(..., trigger: .standard) for an active workspace.

Mount the real workspace/terminal host and focus its Cloud composer. Keep the existing draft, pane-selection, and first-responder assertions. Without this path, a wiring regression can leave the local panel selected while the Cloud composer still owns the draft and first responder.

Addressed both CodeRabbit focus-test findings in 453329c7416.

The foreground and background composer tests now exercise the equivalent WorkspacePanelContentHostView bridge: update the text-box state, guard active workspace ownership, and call focusPanelFromTerminalInput(..., trigger: .standard). This verifies the production selection route instead of calling the panel method alone.

Swift syntax, test wiring, and diff checks pass locally.

Follow-up pushed in 09b5293d65d.

  • Routed the host's composer callback through a production WorkspaceContentView.makeComposerFocusHandler helper.
  • Updated both foreground and background focus tests to use that production callback, including the panel text-box state transition.
  • This directly exercises the workspace selection guard and the .standard focus route called by the Cloud host.

Validation: Swift frontend parse for the modified source and test files, plus git diff --check. The targeted Swift test was not run on the MacBook Air per the native-build guard.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Add onFocusTextBox to the four test initializers.

PanelContentView requires onFocusTextBox, but the four initializers omit it. Because all four files are sources of the cmuxTests target, the test target cannot compile.

Follow-up pushed in babb42fc32c.

Added the required onFocusTextBox callback to the four remaining PanelContentView test fixtures, resolving the test-target compile gap identified in review.

Validation: Swift frontend parse for all affected source and test files, scripts/sync-test-wiring --check, and git diff --check. Native Swift tests remain delegated from the MacBook Air.
