Fixes #12936.

When cmux reconnects to an existing remote tmux session, it rebinds the current relay environment but leaves the session's cmux-managed default-command unchanged. User-created panes can therefore keep launching through a deleted relay rcfile and lose the normal login-shell PATH.

The reconnect command now reads the existing default command and refreshes it only when it contains cmux's managed helper or integration markers. User-authored tmux defaults remain untouched. Added a regression test proving a stale managed command is replaced before attach, while the existing test continues to cover preservation of unrecognized options.

Testing

  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --affected mf/main
  • Swift parse of the changed source and tests
  • git diff --check
  • SwiftPM test attempt was blocked by unrelated compiler type-check timeouts in existing CmuxFoundation tests

Changelog

Remote tmux user-created panes regain the current cmux shell integration after reconnect instead of retaining a stale relay rcfile.

Demo Video

Not included. The reconnect command and guarded option update are covered by deterministic command-builder tests.

Checklist

  • Refreshes only cmux-managed defaults
  • Preserves user-authored tmux options
  • Adds reconnect regression coverage

Summary by cubic

Fixes #12936 so reconnecting to an existing remote tmux session refreshes a stale cmux-managed default-command, keeping user-created panes on the current shell integration instead of a deleted relay rcfile.

  • Reconnect reads the session's default-command and resets it only when it contains cmux's managed helper or shell integration markers; a failed refresh aborts before attach with remote diagnostics suppressed.
  • User-authored tmux defaults remain untouched.
  • Adds regression coverage for the replace-before-attach and abort-on-failure paths; an existing test covers preservation of unrecognized options.

Written for commit d77e389. Summary will update on new commits.

View guided diff Turn on auto-fix

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed attachment to existing tmux sessions by refreshing outdated cmux-managed shell commands before connecting. Existing custom commands remain unchanged. If the refresh fails, attachment stops and returns the tmux failure status rather than continuing with an outdated command.

📝 Walkthrough

When attaching to an existing tmux session, the launcher checks its session-level default-command. If the value contains a cmux-managed marker, the launcher replaces it with the supplied shell command. A failed update returns tmux’s status and prevents attachment.

Changes: Existing tmux session command

Layer / File(s) Summary
Refresh managed default command before attach
Packages/macOS/CmuxFoundation/Sources/CmuxFoundation/RemoteTmuxSessionCommandBuilder.swift, Packages/macOS/CmuxFoundation/Tests/CmuxFoundationTests/RemoteTmuxSessionCommandBuilderTests.swift
The attach script conditionally replaces a managed default-command and exits with the tmux status if the update fails. Tests check that a stale managed command is replaced before attachment and that a failed update returns status 23 without exposing stderr or attaching. The fake tmux supports show-options and configurable set-option failures.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: austinywang

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7547b

The change refreshes managed commands while preserving unmanaged defaults and stops attachment when refresh fails.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7547b

The change is limited to the selected remote tmux session and preserves unmarked commands during ordinary sequential execution. Command replacement is not atomic with its ownership check, so a concurrent user edit can be overwritten. No new privilege escalation was demonstrated, but shared-session coordination remains uncertain.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: The managed-only ownership check and persistent command replacement are separate operations. If an authorized user replaces the marked command with an unmarked command between those operations, reconnect can still overwrite that user-owned pane-launch configuration. This write to existing sessions is new; application-level serialization would not by itself exclude independent tmux edits. The impact is bounded to the selected session’s future panes, with no demonstrated privilege escalation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The added persistent mutation affects default-command for the exact selected session and consequently future panes using that option. Its effective authority remains the remote process’s existing tmux access; the inspected change adds no credential or privilege-grant mechanism. Isolation between workspaces sharing that tmux session was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected production path does not forward configuredRemoteCommand as the tmux pane command, and the existing default’s contents are not executed by the ownership check. This counters a new arbitrary-command injection interpretation, but does not establish the authorization policy of every application entrypoint.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected entrypoint validates the terminal profile, and session-name validation rejects tmux separators and control characters. The builder passes arguments through shell quoting and uses exact session targets, limiting target ambiguity without proving workspace ownership.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Replacement failure blocks attachment and suppresses the remote diagnostic. Option-read failure is ignored, so attachment can proceed without refreshing a stale command. That degraded outcome preserves the prior no-refresh behavior rather than demonstrating a newly introduced security bypass.
  • observed — The generated fish initialization hook consumes an initial-command payload only when its file is readable and an atomic claim succeeds. Existing-session rebinding clears CMUX_INITIAL_COMMAND_FILE before installing the pane command, providing counterevidence to automatic startup-command replay through the added refresh.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For concurrently edited sessions, couple the managed-value check and replacement in a serialized operation that also accounts for independent tmux writers, or explicitly define concurrent edits as outside the ownership-preservation guarantee.

Passes: CI passes on d77e3894a8.

CI passes on d77e3894a8 (run 39130335622 attempt 1).

Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.

CI fast guards passes on d77e3894a8 (https://github.com/manaflow-ai/cmux/actions/runs/39130335622). This covers only the fast guards, not CI: CI's result is the ci-status check, and the CI failure attribution comment names any failing test.
