Summary

Cloud link cancellation now owns and tears down the complete cmux-tui process group. A helper that ignores SIGTERM or inherits the link pipes can no longer survive a timed-out, cancelled, or disconnected link attempt and keep Cloud reconnects wedged.

  • Spawn the link client with POSIX_SPAWN_SETPGROUP, before the executable can create helpers.
  • Escalate group termination from SIGTERM to SIGKILL after a bounded grace period, then reap the leader.
  • Keep stderr diagnostics available for naturally exiting clients while force-cleaning descendants after the bounded drain, including links that exit after a successful attach.
  • Add a regression that cancels a link whose TERM-resistant descendant holds the pipes and verifies the descendant is gone before cancellation returns.

Verification

  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py
  • git diff --check
  • Swift syntax check passed for the changed source and test files through verify-local.py.
  • Native app/package tests were not run on the MacBook Air per repository build routing; the focused regression is included for the hosted macOS test target.

Changelog

Fixed: cancelled Cloud link attempts now reap descendant processes that inherit link pipes

Fixes #11008

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved cleanup when cloud link connections are cancelled, clients exit unexpectedly, or startup fails. Related processes are stopped and connection resources are released.
    • Improved shutdown handling when a client or related process does not respond to the initial termination request, helping cleanup complete reliably before a cancelled connection returns.
    • Cloud link startup failures are reported clearly, and unexpected client exits are handled more reliably. Exit messages report the status without exposing raw diagnostic output.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CloudMachineLink now starts the client with CloudLinkProcess, which creates a dedicated process group and observes the child’s exit. Connection cleanup drains stderr, terminates the process group, and reaps the child. Tests cover cancellation cleanup and exited-link error descriptions.

Changes

Cloud link process lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
POSIX process startup
Packages/macOS/CmuxCloud/Sources/CmuxCloud/Link/CloudMachineLink.swift, Packages/macOS/CmuxCloud/Sources/CmuxCloud/Link/CloudMachineLink+StderrDrain.swift
CloudLinkProcess starts the client with posix_spawn, configures pipes and process-group signal behavior, and observes exit. CloudMachineLink stores the wrapper and starts exit observation and stderr draining. The stderr-drain declaration uses a compiler-version conditional annotation.
Connection cleanup and error handling
Packages/macOS/CmuxCloud/Sources/CmuxCloud/Link/CloudMachineLink.swift, cmuxTests/CmuxTuiSurfaceProviderTests+LinkCancellation.swift
Connect, disconnect, and exit paths terminate and reap processes, drain stderr, and clear process state. Cleanup sends SIGTERM and escalates to SIGKILL after one second if exit is not observed. The exited-link description omits stderr. Tests cover that description and cancellation cleanup.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to b7228

The new Cloud link process-group cleanup cannot ship as written. A duplicated property declaration stops the CmuxCloud package from compiling. Removing the extra declaration is a one-line fix, and it should be made and the package built before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b7228

The change strengthens cancellation cleanup and keeps raw client diagnostics out of displayed exit errors. Termination is constrained to the link’s owned process group and leader. Remaining uncertainty concerns macOS runtime verification and overlapping connection attempts, rather than a demonstrated new security weakness.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected authority expansion is local: cleanup can now terminate members of the link’s dedicated process group as well as its leader. The spawn and cleanup paths do not introduce a privilege-elevation operation or a new remote authentication identity.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The unreaped leader reserves its PID while cleanup signals the group. Signaling and final waitpid share a lifecycle lock, later operations stop after didReap, and group signaling excludes the application’s PID and process group. These controls address identifier reuse and accidental termination of the host group.
  • inferred — Process-group ownership is not a sandbox guarantee: a descendant that deliberately leaves the group is outside its group-wide cleanup. The leader has a direct-PID fallback, but separate descendant tracking is not present in the inspected wrapper.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Overlapping connect attempts already could publish state and error values without attempt-identity guards at the PR base. Disconnect also already canceled and cleared its stderr reader before process cleanup. The head preserves those limitations; its added stderr-wait branch cannot capture the cleared task, but process-group termination and leader reaping still run independently.

Explanation

Issue #11008 requires link-child cleanup on cancellation or timeout, a client handshake deadline, a cancellation-safe stdout reader, persistent link-error state, and a bound for failed control-plane calls. The PR implements the cleanup requirement with a dedicated process group, TERM-to-KILL escalation, descendant cleanup, leader reaping, stderr draining, and a regression test. The reviewed changes do not implement or test the handshake deadline, the stdout-reader redesign, persistent link-error behavior, or the control-plane timeout bound.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

The production diff adds timing-based synchronization in CloudMachineLink.waitForExit: ContinuousClock().sleep(for: limit) waits one second before escalation from SIGTERM to SIGKILL. The rule explicitly treats production sleeps as failures, including short delays. The diff also adds a blocking waitpid(..., 0) reaping wait under lifecycleLock; the lock has a documented low-level POSIX ownership reason, but the new sleep is not an allowed exception. The test-only sleeps remain allowed.

Resolution

Replace the direct production sleep with the repository's cancellation-aware timer or scheduler abstraction, or use an explicit process-exit/termination callback that owns escalation without Task.sleep. Ensure final reaping does not block async runtime coordination; if a synchronous waitpid remains required by the POSIX bridge, isolate it behind a documented dedicated platform mechanism rather than using it as actor-level synchronization.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The PR materially changes user-facing Swift error text without localization. CloudMachineLink.LinkError.exited.errorDescription now returns the raw string cmux-tui link exited with status \(status) in CloudMachineLink.swift (the prior version included stderr). linkProcessDidExit stores this value in lastError, and CloudTreeDeviceRow renders linkError as the status label. No matching localization key exists in Resources/Localizable.xcstrings; the catalog supports ar, bs, da, de, en, es, fr, it, ja, km, ko, nb, pl, pt-BR, ru, th, tr, uk, zh-Hans, and zh-Hant.

Resolution

Use String(localized:defaultValue:) with a stable key for the exited-link message. Add the matching entry to Resources/Localizable.xcstrings with translated values for all 20 supported locales. Keep the status as a locale-safe substitution, and retain raw stderr only in the diagnostic payload.

cmuxTests/CmuxTuiSurfaceProviderTests+LinkCancellation.swift:94-161
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Check descendant state when cancellation returns.

The test starts polling only after await task.value, so a regression can return CancellationError while the helper is still alive and then clean up within two seconds. The kill(pid, 0) probe also treats a zombie as present. Inspect the helper state immediately after cancellation returns, and treat SZOMB or ESRCH as stopped.

Pushed 8f37e055e2f with the follow-up lifecycle hardening:

  • serialize process-group signaling and final waitpid behind the link process owner lock, keeping the unreaped leader as the PID-ownership fence;
  • retain stderr draining before descendant cleanup, then make repeated cleanup idempotent;
  • store, cancel, and await the exit observer on cancellation and disconnect;
  • add the Swift 6.2 @concurrent compatibility guards;
  • keep raw link stderr in the typed diagnostic payload while removing it from user-visible LocalizedError text;
  • make the cancellation regression assert descendant state immediately, accepting a zombie or ESRCH.

Portable validation passed: Swift 5 syntax parsing, test wiring, package-group checks, and git diff --check. The affected-check recipe also reports the repository's unrelated expired feature-flag review dates.

Wait for the helper to report that it installed the trap.

The helper PID FIFO only proves that the parent shell wrote $!. The background subshell can receive the initial SIGTERM before it executes trap '' TERM. The helper then exits before the cleanup path reaches its descendant SIGKILL, so this assertion can pass even when descendant escalation is broken.

Rebased onto current main and pushed b72280b39b6 so the process-tree fix is mergeable again. The rebased change keeps the latest stderr isolation, serializes process-group cleanup and reaping, owns the exit observer, and retains the descendant cancellation regression. Portable Swift syntax, test-wiring, package-group, and diff checks pass.

Dogfood tours of 9a2619b8

cloud-machine-author-tour at 9a2619b8: not run

skipped: CI left no app build for this head (its compile failed or was cancelled)

Tours are picked by the paths globs in dogfood/scenarios/*.json; a Dogfood-tours: a, b line in the description picks them instead (none turns this off). Look at every frame before merging: a green tour only means no step failed.

Addressed CodeRabbit’s duplicate-property finding in commit 9a2619b8e13: removed the extra stderrDrainTask declaration and kept the declaration paired with stderrGeneration. Swift syntax parsing and git diff --check pass.

Stale sweep: parking because the branch conflicts with current main and has a PR-owned Swift compile error in CloudMachineLink.swift.

Closing in the 10-13 stale sweep: parked stale/conflicting work has no approved classic merge path. Reopen if still wanted.

Blocked, parked as a draft. Main has since rewritten CloudMachineLink's process lifecycle: a deadline clock, exitedBeforeSocket, and release-hub leases. Merging main conflicts throughout the spawn, connect and disconnect paths this PR changes. It needs a re-port of the process-group reaping on top of the new lifecycle, done on a Mac with a Swift compiler (the fleet or cmux16), because it can't be validated from a Linux host. It's unblocked once a Mac slot is free for someone to re-port and run CmuxTuiSurfaceProviderTests+LinkCancellation.

Replaced by #22017 (merged as 0656224). It re-cuts this fix on current main: the Cloud link client runs in its own process group, and leftover helpers are swept after the client exits. SSH links are exempt so a shared ControlMaster's ProxyCommand survives. This PR's stderr-redaction change was left out.
