Summary

Fixes #15729.

Browser profile mutations previously parsed known options and then used a non-flag filter, which silently dropped unknown flags and in several forms ignored extra positionals.

This change:

  • validates profile-mutation argv before any socket request;
  • rejects unknown option-like tokens for create/rename/clear/delete;
  • rejects truly surplus positionals when selectors/names were already supplied by options;
  • preserves multi-word positional profile names/new names where the existing grammar relied on them;
  • treats -- as a real terminator so a literal profile name such as --literal-profile remains valid;
  • keeps --all / --force scoped to clear only;
  • reuses the existing fully-localized unexpected-arguments message.

The regression test commit precedes the implementation.

Testing

Added process-level coverage that malformed create/rename/clear/delete commands fail before reaching the socket, plus a positive -- terminator case.

I could not run the macOS bundled CLI suite from this connector environment, so exact-head CI remains the execution gate. No local pass is claimed.

Changelog

Fixed browser profile mutation argument validation.

Demo Video

Not applicable; CLI parsing only.

Summary by cubic

Fixes #15729. Browser profile mutation commands previously parsed known options and then filtered non-flag tokens, silently dropping unknown flags and ignoring surplus positional arguments; they now validate all arguments before any socket request.

  • Unknown option-like tokens are rejected for clear, create, delete, and rename using the existing localized "unexpected arguments" message.
  • Surplus positionals are rejected when selectors or names were already provided via options, while multi-word positional names still work where the grammar relied on them.
  • Value options reject missing values and values that look like flags; --surface is validated up front and stripped before the profile args are parsed.
  • -- is treated as a real terminator, so a literal profile name such as --literal-profile remains valid.
  • --all and --force stay scoped to clear only, with --all taking precedence over a supplied profile.
  • Added process-level tests that malformed commands fail before reaching the socket, plus a positive -- terminator case.

Written for commit be8098a. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Browser-profile commands reject unknown flags and unexpected extra arguments, with clearer errors for invalid usage.
    • Options that require values reject missing or empty values. Surface options also reject values that look like flags.
    • Use -- to end option parsing and pass following text as arguments, including profile names that begin with --.
    • The clear command recognizes --all and --force; --all takes precedence over a supplied profile, and extra positional arguments are rejected.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Browser-profile create, rename, clear, and delete commands now validate arguments before socket use. The parser recognizes supported options, rejects unknown flags and surplus positional arguments, and treats -- as the end of option parsing. Tests cover malformed arguments and a profile name beginning with a dash.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: teamleaderleo

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to be809

Profile mutation parsing has no demonstrated targeting failure, but duplicated parsing should be consolidated. The malformed-command test can fail under a non-English locale; fix its locale before relying on that test across environments.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to be809

The change rejects malformed commands earlier without adding mutation privileges or broadening destructive targeting. No material security regression was identified in the changed command path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant exposure remains mutation of an addressed browser profile, or the existing all-profile clear operation available through the socket. The comparison does not show added caller authority or broader destructive selection. Downstream tenant, datastore and environment boundaries were not independently established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled argv is checked before crossing the socket boundary. Unknown option-like tokens and surplus operands are rejected, while tokens after -- remain profile data rather than acquiring --all or --force authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Malformed commands terminate before mutation initiation. For accepted commands, the comparison shows no new retry, cancellation, rollback or multi-request transition; request and response handling remain unchanged. Server-side atomicity, idempotency and interruption recovery remain outside the inspected implementation.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 4 functions across 2 files. (1 skipped: 1 too large.)

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

The diff adds user-facing diagnostics that echo the original invalid argument. validateBrowserProfileMutationArguments and browserProfileArguments interpolate value into unexpected arguments, and rejectBrowserProfileExtras prints joined positional values (CLI/cmux.swift:16644-16652, 16659-16668, 16709-16717). For example, an invalid argument such as --token=secret is included in the error. The CLI entry point writes thrown errors to standard error (CLI/cmux.swift:43280-43287), so this reaches cmux CLI users. This exposes credentials or tokens, which the custom check forbids.

Resolution

Do not include raw arguments or positionals in browser-profile validation errors. Return a localized generic unexpected-arguments diagnostic, or otherwise redact secret-bearing values before formatting the message. Apply this to both unknown-option and surplus-positional validation paths.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The diff adds untranslated user-facing CLI errors in CLI/cmux.swift: "\(value) requires a value" and "--surface requires a value" (added at lines 16704 and 16736–16748). These strings are not routed through a localized API, and no matching entries exist in Resources/Localizable.xcstrings. The diff changes no resource catalogs. The reused cli.readSelection.error.unexpectedArguments key is already present and translated for its existing locales, so it is not the cause of this failure.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

The diff adds a second owner for browser-profile mutation validation. validateBrowserProfileMutationCommandBeforeSocket independently parses and validates create, rename, clear, and delete at lines 16754–16903. runBrowserCommand repeats those checks and parsing in the corresponding mutation branches at lines 17152–17268. This split can make pre-socket acceptance differ from handler behavior as either copy changes. The command parser should be the single source of truth for the mutation grammar.

Resolution

Create one browser-profile mutation parser that normalizes the verb and returns a validated typed request, including the profile/name values and clear flags. Run it before socket connection and pass its result to the command handler. Remove the duplicate command-specific validation from runBrowserCommand. Start with create and delete, then apply the same parser path to rename and clear; retain tests that prove malformed requests fail before socket use and valid requests reach the intended socket operation.

Review: adversarial pass on the diff

Verdict: LAND. The strongest tests of your five. These are integration tests that spawn the bundled CLI against a mock socket, so they pin the production call sites rather than a helper, which is exactly the difference that makes #15978 weak.

Replayed the 9 new cases plus 4 pre-existing accept cases from the same function against five mutants. All five died:

pr:unmutated                              ALL PASS
mut: drop -- terminator handling KILLED
mut: drop hasPrefix("-") rejection KILLED (accepted name="Work --typo")
mut: rejectBrowserProfileExtras no-op KILLED by 4 cases
mut: allow 1 extra operand KILLED by 4 cases
mut: clear allowedFlags = [] KILLED

One note on that last one: your 8 new reject cases alone do not kill it, because clear --all --typo still rejects, just on --all instead of --typo. What catches it is the pre-existing clear-force accept case in the same function. Fine as it stands, but that coverage is incidental rather than designed.

No over-rejection found. 33 invocations executed across create, rename, clear and delete. Every documented form and every previously working form behaves identically to main, including --name=Work, --json on either side of the command, multi-word positional names, and --profile / --name mixes. browserUsage documents only profiles <list|add|rename|clear|delete> [...] with no per-verb flags, so the allowlist matches the docs. The PR also adds working -- terminator support to create and delete, which main got wrong: nonFlagArgs filtered -- and the argument after it, yielding "requires a profile".

Two nits

The new tests are appended to cmuxTests/CLINotifyProcessIntegrationRegressionTests.swift, which is about tmux notify-process behaviour. Wrong home, and it puts them in the expensive app-host target while your other three PRs correctly use cmuxCLITests.

The error text reuses the cli.readSelection.error.unexpectedArguments localization key for browser-profile errors, so the key namespace no longer matches its consumers.

Neither blocks.

Verification

Executed: 33 invocations and 5 mutants in a Foundation-only harness on Linux carrying verbatim copies of main's parsing helpers. Not executed: no real test target ran, so pass and fail are the harness replaying each test's inputs. Your tests spawn the bundled CLI over a socket; I replicated the argument-parsing layer only, so the socket round trip and the bundledCLIPath() fixture are unverified here.

Thanks @soyeladice-svg, the browser profile argument coverage is useful. However, create-flag still reaches the socket instead of rejecting the extra flag first; fix that path, then push and we’ll run CI.

Addressed the maintainer-reported create-flag path. Browser-profile mutations now validate the original argv before option extraction, so unknown flags cannot be hidden by later parsing and no socket request should occur for malformed input. The existing process-level reject cases remain the regression gate. Ready for CI/re-review when convenient.

Fix the locale for the English error assertion.

The CLI localizes "unexpected arguments". Set AppleLanguages to (en) for this child process so the assertion does not depend on the test runner's locale.

Follow-up on the maintainer review: browser-profile mutation commands now validate the original argv shape before extracting options, so unknown flags / missing values cannot be silently consumed and forwarded to the socket. The existing no-request regressions remain in place. Current infra/CLA checks are green; ready for re-review when convenient.

Thank you @soyeladice-svg. I merged main in and resolved the test-file conflict. However, browser connects to the socket in run() (CLI/cmux.swift:5417) before it reaches this validation, so these cases still fail with "Socket not found". Could you move the check into a pre-socket hook like validateWorkspaceLoadingCommandBeforeSocket, and put the tests in cmuxCLITests?

Centralize browser-profile mutation parsing.

The pre-socket validator receives the same commandArgs that runBrowserCommand receives. Both paths strip display flags, extract the surface, normalize aliases, and apply the same mutation rules. Shared helpers already remove low-level parsing duplication, but each path still constructs its own mutation operands and RPC parameters.

The current code does not establish a reachable delete command that targets different profiles. The issue is architectural duplication, which violates the rule requiring one shared action path and can regress when only one branch changes.

Make parseBrowserProfileMutation(command:commandArgs:) throws -> BrowserProfileMutation the source of truth. Use its result for pre-socket validation and RPC parameters. Start with the delete branch, then migrate the remaining mutation branches. Add no-socket parser tests.

Review comment at @CLI/cmux.swift around lines 16754 - 16903:
The pre-socket validator and runBrowserCommand independently construct
browser-profile mutation operands, risking inconsistent parsing. Make
parseBrowserProfileMutation(command:commandArgs:) the shared source of truth:
use its result in validateBrowserProfileMutationCommandBeforeSocket for
validation and in runBrowserCommand for RPC parameters, migrating delete first
and then the remaining mutation branches. Add parser tests that verify invalid
mutations are rejected before socket access.
