Summary

Fixes #15710.

The diagnostics CLI contract now includes the shipped iroh-diag command and the privileged sudo namespace, and the no-socket help probe list covers the diagnostics help output for those commands. I also added a small docs inventory guard so future contract edits catch the same omission without requiring a built macOS CLI binary.

Testing

Added:

  • tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py checks the diagnostics command rows and no-socket probe entries in docs/cli-contract.md.

Ran:

  • RED: python3 - <<'PY' ... test_diagnostics_commands_are_in_cli_contract_and_no_socket_probes() ... PY failed with AssertionError before the docs update because the diagnostics rows/probes were missing.
  • GREEN: python3 - <<'PY' ... test_diagnostics_commands_are_in_cli_contract_and_no_socket_probes() ... PY -> docs inventory passed.
  • PYTHONPATH=tests python3 - <<'PY' ... load_help_probes()/load_negative_help_probes() ... PY -> help probes 220, negative probes 1.
  • bash scripts/localize-changes -> localization ready, 0 new/changed localization keys, catalog validator passed.
  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --only localization --only feature-flags --only xcstrings -> 3/3 selected checks passed.
  • python3 -m py_compile tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py tests/test_cli_contract_help.py.
  • git diff --check HEAD~1..HEAD.

Not run:

  • Native compilation, app tests, app launch, or executable tests/test_cli_contract_help.py against a built cmux binary; this PR only changes docs plus a portable docs guard, and this Linux checkout has no CMUX_CLI_BIN.

Changelog

Changed the CLI contract docs to cover diagnostics commands.

Summary by cubic

Fixes #15710. The diagnostics CLI contract now covers the shipped iroh-diag command and the privileged sudo namespace, documenting sudo run input, timeout, approval, and exit-code behavior plus sudo pending and sudo setup-touch-id, with matching no-socket help probes.

  • Documents sudo run behavior in prose outside the command table and removes a duplicate diagnostics command row.
  • Replaces text-fragment assertions with executable no-socket CLI probes for the diagnostics help output, so the inventory guard runs without needing a built macOS CLI binary.

Written for commit 4bdf3e7. Summary will update on new commits.

Thanks for opening your first cmux pull request!

We're a small team and the outside-PR queue is long, so a reply can take a while, sometimes longer than we'd like. If this one goes quiet and you'd like eyes on it, comment here and we'll pick it up.

A few things that help:

  • Start here covers what reviewers look for, what CI runs for you, and what happens next.
  • If the CLA check asks, reply with the sentence it gives you.
  • The verification ladder shows which checks fit your change. Say in the description which ones you ran.
  • If we end up fixing the same problem another way, we'll credit you with a Co-authored-by trailer and link the fix here.

Addressed the CodeRabbit follow-up in 7de35820:

  • escaped the sudo run table pipes so GFM/markdownlint no longer split the row
  • expanded the sudo request contract with source validation, timeout bounds, approval lifecycle, result/denial/failure/timeout outcomes, and sudo pending queued-ID behavior
  • updated the deterministic CLI contract inventory guard to cover the escaped row and sudo contract text

Verification on the pushed head:

  • RED before docs update: uv run --with pytest pytest tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py -q failed with 7 missing fragments
  • GREEN: uv run --with pytest pytest tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py -q -> 1 passed
  • python3 -m py_compile tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py tests/test_cli_contract_help.py
  • ./scripts/localize-changes -> localization ready, 0 changed web English keys
  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --only localization --only feature-flags --only xcstrings -> 3/3 selected checks passed
  • git diff --check -> clean

Full markdownlint-cli2 docs/cli-contract.md still reports many pre-existing MD013 line-length issues across the file; the originally reported MD056 table-column issue is covered by the escaped-pipe guard above.

Addressed the latest CodeRabbit follow-up in 53b0587d: the docs inventory guard now checks that both sudo detail paragraphs stay below the final top-level command row (__tmux-compat), not just the first paragraph.

Verification:

  • RED proof: temporarily moved only the After queueing, cmux launches... paragraph above the command table; uv run --with pytest pytest tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py -q failed with assert 79 > 206.
  • GREEN: uv run --with pytest pytest tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py -q -> 1 passed.

Thanks @kocaemre, the rows all match the code :) However, CI doesn't run pytest, so test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py never actually runs. Could you add a __main__ block and a step for it in ci-guards.yml next to the other docs guards? Or drop it, the help probes already cover the CLI side. And the CLA still needs signing.

Addressed the __main__ wiring request so CI can execute the diagnostics inventory guard directly, not only through pytest.

Evidence on c5c6cfdf:

  • RED direct-script proof against the previous head: with the sudo pending docs row temporarily broken, python3 tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py exited 0 with no output.
  • GREEN negative proof after the change: with the same temporary docs break, python3 tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py exited 1 with the expected assertion failure.
  • uv run --with pytest pytest tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py -q — 1 passed
  • python3 tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py — cli contract diagnostics inventory ok
  • python3 -m py_compile tests/test_cli_contract_diagnostics_inventory.py tests/test_cli_contract_help.py
  • ./scripts/localize-changes — localization ready / strict catalog validator passed
  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --only localization --only feature-flags --only xcstrings — 3/3 selected checks passed
  • git diff --check — clean

I have not posted the CLA signature phrase because that is a contributor legal attestation and needs the account owner to do it.

Taking this: checking the diagnostics contract against the CLI and replacing the text-only test with the existing executable help coverage before review and CI. Thanks @kocaemre for documenting the diagnostics commands.
