Summary

Restored My Devices workspaces now recover when the control plane closes an in-flight dial, and their sidebar badge stays a computer throughout restore and reconnect. The link state machine treats only owner cancellation as teardown; an engine-originated cancellation enters the existing reconnect backoff. Device session enforcement leaves a waiting dial alive until its own admission checks see the authoritative directory, while still releasing sessions on an explicit stop or confirmed authorization loss. Sidebar presentation also reads staged catalog projections, so a saved device machine remains durable before live resources are hydrated.

Closes #15437

Testing

  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --swift-changed origin/main — passed Swift syntax, app-source wiring, test wiring, and feature-flag checks.
  • python3 scripts/swift_file_length_budget.py — passed for all six changed Swift files; no budget TSV changed.
  • Focused app-host E2E runs for cmuxTests/DeviceLinkReconnectPolicyTests and cmuxTests/SidebarCloudWorkspaceBadgeTests are dispatched on the exact pushed commits:
  • Native compilation and test execution are intentionally delegated to the GitHub Mac lane; this Mac was not used for xcodebuild.
  • The regression exercises the reconnect reducer and the saved-projection sidebar snapshot. A direct DeviceIrxClient transport integration test would require a real IROH endpoint and would not provide a stable behavioral oracle, so the enforcement fix is covered by the same state-machine repro and the focused app-host lane.

Changelog

Fixed: Restored My Devices workspaces retry interrupted connections and keep their computer sidebar icon while loading

Checklist

  • Behavior changes have added or updated tests, or Testing says why not
  • UI, settings, menu, schema, help-text or user-facing docs change: localization audited; no new user-facing strings were added
  • New or changed v2 socket method allowlisted for cmux ssh: no socket methods changed
  • iOS connectivity, auth, lifecycle, workspace action, terminal I/O or mobile RPC contract change: no iOS or mobile RPC contract changed
  • User-facing docs updated if needed
  • Reviewed with a subagent before merge; this PR is left for Austin's dogfood and merge review

Summary by cubic

Fixes interrupted My Devices restores so they retry with backoff, keeps the sidebar computer badge for saved device machines until live resources hydrate, and releases device dials only on confirmed loss of authority.

Bug Fixes

  • The link state machine treats only owner cancellation as teardown; engine or lower-layer cancellation enters the existing reconnect backoff.
  • Waiting dials stay alive while the control snapshot is missing or stale, releasing only on an explicit stop, confirmed revocation, or a host switch; verified dials retire when the current directory removes their endpoint but survive stale snapshots.
  • Sidebar badges read staged catalog projections indexed by workspace, so restored device machines keep their computer icon and device label while loading; the machine index is maintained incrementally per workspace, so removing one of several panels with the same machine does not drop the badge.

Closes #15437

Written for commit 1bde822. Summary will update on new commits.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes update device-session release rules, route interrupted device dials through reconnect backoff, and include restored device projections in sidebar workspace presentation. Tests cover session release, retry behavior, and device badges during loading.

Changes

Device restore handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session authorization retention
Sources/Devices/DeviceIrxClient.swift, Sources/Mobile/MobileHostIrxRuntime.swift, cmuxTests/DeviceLinkFailureTests.swift
Session enforcement applies separate release rules to waiting and verified sessions. Mobile host transitions release all outgoing sessions. Tests cover cache and authorization outcomes.
Interrupted dial retry
Sources/Devices/DeviceLink.swift, Sources/Devices/DeviceLinkReconnectPolicy.swift, cmuxTests/DeviceLinkReconnectPolicyTests.swift
DeviceLink reports cancellation as an interrupted connection. The reconnect policy schedules backoff when the device remains dialable. A test checks the delay and next attempt.

Sidebar device badge

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restored projection machine index
Sources/Surfaces/SurfaceProjectionRestoreStore.swift, Sources/Surfaces/SurfaceCatalog+ProjectionQueries.swift, cmuxTests/SidebarCloudWorkspaceBadgeTests.swift
The restore store maintains a workspace-to-machine index as projections change. Projection queries use the index to retrieve restored machine IDs. Tests cover the index after removing a panel and the badge during loading.
Device badge presentation
Sources/Cloud/CloudWorkspaceSidebarPresentation.swift, Sources/SidebarWorkspaceSnapshotFactory.swift, cmuxTests/SidebarCloudWorkspaceBadgeTests.swift
The sidebar combines device IDs from cloud-binding resources and workspace catalog projections. It resolves names from binding-state names, catalog machine information, then raw IDs. The snapshot uses the device label from the presentation.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 9fefa

The restored-device index change contains an expression that does not compile, so the app cannot build until it is fixed. The fix is a one-line change. Session retention for missing caches and the duplicate-machine badge handling now look correct. Two earlier concerns remain open: sidebar refresh cost and verified sessions kept after their endpoint disappears. Fix the build error and resolve or accept those concerns before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9fefa

Device connections can now remain open while directory information is unavailable. The inspected data paths recheck authorization, but coverage of every operation on a retained connection is not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Retaining a verified connection through directory uncertainty shifts revocation assurance from immediate session closure to authorization checks on subsequent operations. The inspected paths fail closed, but enforcement across every operation on that connection is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed session decision applies to device endpoint connections owned by the client. The indexed machine set can affect eligibility for a workspace-bound cloud file-explorer target, but does not itself select the target VM.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No unauthorized operation is demonstrated. During directory uncertainty, a previously verified connection can persist, but the inspected control and event paths require fresh authorization before I/O; coverage of every operation on that connection remains unestablished.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The file-explorer eligibility guard requires a workspace-bound VM, current connected provider state, team and capability checks, and projected machines limited to local or that VM. Restored-projection resolution separately checks workspace ownership.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Explicit stop clears client sessions, host transition requests release of outgoing sessions, and link teardown cancels owner tasks. Endpoint release retains its slot until engine shutdown and checks the owner before clearing it.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish that every operation on a retained device connection applies the current-authorization check, and document the authenticated provenance of machine IDs in restored projection records.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

The PR introduces a production complexity violation in Sources/Surfaces/SurfaceProjectionRestoreStore.swift:122. Batch paths takeResolvable (line 93) and remove(machine:) (line 66) call removeIndexedMachine once per removed projection. removeIndexedMachine rebuilds the full machineIDsByWorkspace set through Set(machineCountsByWorkspace[workspaceID]?.keys ?? []) on every call. This is O(R × M), where R is removed projections and M is distinct machines in the workspace, and can become quadratic for roughly 1000 restored records. The PR provides no benchmark or documented bound.

Resolution

Update machineIDsByWorkspace incrementally. When a machine count reaches zero, remove only that machine from the workspace set and delete the workspace indexes if they become empty. Alternatively, collect all removals and rebuild each affected workspace index once after the batch. Add a scale-focused test or benchmark for large restore and removal batches.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The PR materially expands independently testable domain logic in the app target. Sources/Devices/DeviceLinkReconnectPolicy.swift is explicitly a pure reducer, has no AppKit or lifecycle dependency, and the diff adds the new connectInterrupted event and transition used by the fix. Its tests remain in cmuxTests, while the type is compiled from the app target in cmux.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj. Sources/Surfaces/SurfaceProjectionRestoreStore.swift also gains workspace indexes, reference counts, and restore-state transitions. This is persistence/workstream logic based on CmuxSurfaceCatalogModel values, but it remains in the app target and calls the process-wide StartupBreadcrumbLog; the new duplicate-machine test also remains in the app test target. The repository already demonstrates this boundary pattern by placing the pure RemoteReconnectPolicy in the CmuxRemoteSession SwiftPM package.

Resolution

Extract the reconnect reducer into a small CmuxDeviceLinkCore package target. Expose DeviceLinkReconnectPolicy as the first public type, together with the minimal failure-kind/value API required by Phase.blocked; keep transport error classification and localized app presentation in the app target. Extract the restore state and index into a small CmuxSurfaceProjectionRestoreCore target that depends on CmuxSurfaceCatalogModel, exposing SurfaceProjectionRestoreStore as its first public type. Inject a breadcrumb callback or return restore events from that package, and keep StartupBreadcrumbLog wiring in the app target. Move the reducer and restore-store unit tests into the corresponding package test targets.

CodeRabbit’s two inline findings are addressed in af2f0f46c0:

  • Sidebar provenance uses SurfaceCatalog.projectionMachines(forWorkspace:), which includes pending restores, and the presentation reuses one computed device label.
  • A missing cache no longer releases waiting sessions; explicit lifecycle shutdown passes releaseAll: true, and DeviceLinkFailureTests.waitingSessionSurvivesMissingControlSnapshot covers the policy.

I left the package-boundary suggestion unapplied intentionally. DeviceLinkReconnectPolicy is an existing app-target reducer; this fix adds one event to that established owner. Creating a new SwiftPM target for a single corrective case would expand package wiring and the public API without a second consumer or dependency inversion need. The local verification and current CI lane cover the existing app target directly.
