Closes #11481

Add a Browser setting for choosing the application used when cmux opens URLs outside its embedded browser. The value accepts an application name, bundle identifier, or .app path; empty or unresolved values fall back to the macOS default browser. The shared opener is used by browser fallbacks, terminal links, browser actions, sidebar links, auth/browser handoffs, and the open wrapper. Settings, cmux.json, schema, search, docs, and macOS/localized strings are wired through.

Validation: focused CmuxSettings package build, Swift syntax checks, localization parity, PBX test wiring, tests/test_open_wrapper.py, and git diff --check.

Summary by cubic

Adds a Browser setting that chooses the external app cmux uses for HTTP(S) URLs opened outside its embedded browser. The value accepts an app name, bundle identifier, or .app path; empty or unresolvable values fall back to the macOS default browser. Closes #11481.

  • Routes external URL opening through BrowserExternalAppOpener across browser fallbacks, terminal links, auth/browser handoffs, pricing screens, help and sidebar links, the session index, context menus, and the open shell wrapper; the wrapper keeps mixed argument lists intact while sending HTTP(S) URLs to the configured app and other targets to their system handlers.
  • Leaves non-web schemes (mailto, file URLs, custom schemes) on their own system handlers.
  • Wires the setting into the Settings UI, cmux.json (browser.externalApplication), schema, search index, docs, and localized strings; the insecure HTTP warning now refers to the external browser.
  • Adds unit tests for the opener, settings mirroring, the settings row anchor, and the open wrapper, and stabilizes shared macOS regression fixtures including CLI socket autodiscovery, nushell hook, and workspace recovery tests.

Bug Fixes

  • Closes a Codex monitor wake gap: a transcript append during the notification-delivery window could be missed, leaving the monitor asleep until its next parse. The monitor is now reused within a turn so post-parse appends wake the next parse.

Written for commit 25087b5. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Choose an external browser for HTTP(S) links opened outside cmux by entering an app name, bundle identifier, or .app path. If the setting is empty or the app can’t be resolved, links open with the system default.
    • Configure the browser in Settings or with the browser.externalApplication setting.
  • Improvements
    • Links opened from sign-in flows, panels, menus, and other parts of the app now follow your external browser setting.
    • Updated the plain-HTTP warning to refer to opening links in an external browser.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to fa76b

The configured browser preference is applied in the reviewed fallback paths, and the setting descriptions and warning text match that behavior. No known issue remains that should block merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to fa76b

External browser selection now also applies to sign-in links. The setting is local and the sign-in callback remains separately checked, but a configured application that is not a trustworthy browser can receive the sign-in URL.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The authentication handoff now sends its state-bearing HTTPS sign-in URL to the configured application, which need only resolve as an application, not be a browser. An unsuitable or malicious locally selected application could observe the URL or fail to complete the handoff. The callback-state check limits, but does not eliminate, this change in recipient trust.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed recipient for sign-in URLs is the selected application on the local installation. Evidence does not establish remote control of that selection or exposure across users or tenants.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If an unsuitable or malicious application is locally selected, it can receive the sign-in initiation URL through the new handoff. This does not establish that it can satisfy the separately validated callback or take over an account.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The opener limits configured-application delivery to HTTP(S) and checks that application identifiers resolve; browser external-navigation policy also excludes app-owned callback schemes. Resolution does not establish that an application is a trustworthy browser.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Removed imported settings restore backed-up ownership values, while absent or blank effective selections return web URLs to the system handler. An interrupted write sequence was not exercised.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider making use of the configured application for authentication an explicit choice, or retaining the system browser for that handoff, so ordinary link preferences do not implicitly change the recipient of sign-in URLs.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the feature and lists validation, but it does not follow the required template fully. It lacks an explicit Testing section with commands and results, a Demo Video or screenshot attachment, and the required Checklist responses.

Resolution

Add the missing template sections. Document each executed test command and its result under Testing. Include a demo video or screenshots for the UI and behavior changes. Complete the Checklist, including localization audit status, documentation and changelog status, review status, and any applicable exemptions or confirmations.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR retains changes to Packages/macOS/CmuxControlSocket/Sources/CmuxControlSocket/Wire/EventStreamReconnectPolicy.swift. The reported lint exemption and related comments concern reconnect handling. The available evidence does not connect these changes to external browser selection or issue #11481.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 26.98% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 63 functions across 42 files. (6 skipped: 3 unsupported, 3 too large.)

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

The PR adds a test-observability seam to shipping source in Packages/macOS/CmuxBrowser/Sources/CmuxBrowser/ExternalBrowser/BrowserExternalAppOpener.swift. Its internal initializer accepts injected resolver, configured-opener, and system-default-opener closures (lines 30-44), while no production caller supplies those parameters. The new test target calls that initializer through @testable import CmuxBrowser and replaces the Launch Services operations (lines 17-131 of BrowserExternalAppOpenerTests.swift). This is a changed production test seam.

Resolution

Remove the test-only injected-closure initializer and its production-only hook storage/typealiases. Keep the public initializer and real Launch Services implementation in production. Move test doubles and observation into the test target; use @testable import with only the smallest necessary private to internal widening, without leaving a test accessor or hook in production. If a genuinely debug-only facility is required, isolate it in a dedicated debug file or folder. See #6452.

Addressed the remaining review findings on 3bf7419 (with behavioral fixes in 3ee0ec9):\n\n- added completion-confirmed async opening for CloudGuestURLService, retaining configured-browser and system-default routing;\n- aligned the generated schema fallback wording;\n- corrected the Russian external-browser prepositions;\n- removed the unrelated EventStreamReconnectPolicy annotation;\n- verified the catalog with python3 scripts/localization_catalog.py check and the focused CmuxBrowser suite (5 tests passed).\n\nThe earlier locale and wrapper findings were fixed in 3ec71b9 and are resolved in their review threads.

Follow-up on the reconnect-policy note: removing the annotation caused the repository package-conventions guard to fail on the existing pure namespace (), which also failed the dependent iOS routing check. Commit 70f39ff restores the required lint exemption; this is retained solely for that guard and remains unrelated to browser behavior.

Automatic catch-up couldn't merge main (551a923a7a1b): CLI/cmux.swift (both sides changed the same lines). Nothing was pushed; merge it by hand. A new push or /catch-up tries again.
