Why

Focused test-e2e.yml runs (dispatch-focused-test.py, run-e2e.sh) almost never start warm. The build job adopts only the DerivedData a 6-hourly main dispatch publishes, and #14098 refuses that whenever any app source changed, because a producer hours back recompiles nearly everything anyway. Any pull request that touches Sources/ therefore compiles cold.

For #14216 on blacksmith-6vcpu-macos-15:

Lane DerivedData Compile
Compile admission seed at distance 0, 46 changed inputs, adopted in 5.7 s 416 s
Focused E2E run 1 no-main-derived-data 995 s
Focused E2E run 2 app-build-changed-since-producer (2 files) 809 s

Compile admission already solved this with per-push seeds (#14081) and picking the seed nearest the tested commit (#14190). Those seeds can only hit at the paths they were built at, and E2E built in the checkout.

What changed

The E2E build job now follows compile admission:

  • Paths. It builds at the canonical root under admission's DerivedData name ($CMUX_CI_CANONICAL_ROOT/derived-data-compile-admission), using compile-app-host-test-product.sh canonical-resolve and canonical-build. The build still covers the same three schemes as before.
  • Seed key. It computes the key exactly as ci-macos.yml does: admission-derived-data-v1-<os>-<arch>-<canonical fingerprint>-.
  • Download. The seed download starts while packages resolve (seed_derived_data.py start). adopt then takes the seed of TEST_REF, or of its nearest ancestor that has one, and swaps it in only after a complete restore. Any miss or failure is still a cold build. The step respects CI_ADMISSION_SEED_DERIVED_DATA=0 and CI_CACHE_BACKEND.
  • Packaging. A fresh product is stamped from the canonical tree and relocated before sealing, the same way admission packages it. The test job already sets the runtime source alias through restore-app-host-test-product.sh, which admission products rely on.
  • Removed. The warm DerivedData restore, input recording and publish steps. Nothing else read their artifacts.
  • Tests. Guard tests updated, plus a new check that pins the canonical path, the admission key, and the start → resolve → adopt → build order.

Not in this PR

e2e-derived-data-seed.yml still dispatches a main build every 6 hours. The only reason it existed was to publish the warm artifact this PR stops using, so it can be deleted in a follow-up. e2e_warm_derived_data.py stays, because seed_derived_data.py imports its record and replay helpers.

Verification

  • Local: test_ci_e2e_compilation_cache (16), test_e2e_warm_derived_data, test_reuse_app_host_products (95), test_run_e2e (87), test_ci_focused_test_selectors, test_ci_self_hosted_guard.sh, and actionlint all pass. test_a_missing_manifest_fails_instead_of_silently_compiling fails locally on unchanged main too, because of the Mac's bash 3.2.
  • CI (macOS 15, workflow from this branch): results pending.

Summary by cubic

Makes focused E2E runs start warm by adopting the per-push DerivedData seeds compile admission publishes, instead of a 6-hourly main seed the admission guard rejects whenever app sources change.

Deletes the 6-hourly e2e-derived-data-seed.yml dispatch, whose only purpose was publishing the artifact this PR stops using.

  • Builds at the canonical root under admission's DerivedData name and CAS path, and keys, downloads, and adopts the seed with the same logic ci-macos.yml uses. The CAS path is a compiler argument, so it must match admission's or every compile the seed carries re-runs.
  • Adopts the seed of the tested revision or its nearest ancestor, replacing the warm restore, input recording, and publish steps.
  • Pins the Xcode admission uses (CMUX_CI_XCODE_APP_PR) on macOS 26 runners, where that Xcode exists, because the seed key hashes xcodebuild -version; other pools keep their default, and the pin travels to the test job.
  • Clears the adopted-build inode override whenever seed adoption ran, not only on a hit, so a reused runner does not keep it set.
  • Seed misses or failures still fall back to a cold build; a fresh product is stamped from the canonical tree before sealing.

Written for commit 6afc2cb. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated end-to-end test builds to reuse prepared build data when available, while continuing with a fresh build if reuse fails.
    • Updated Xcode selection and build-cost reporting for end-to-end runs.
    • Removed the scheduled workflow that periodically triggered end-to-end builds.
    • Updated automated checks to verify build-data adoption, build ordering, and workflow behavior.

test-e2e.yml built in the checkout and adopted only a 6-hourly main
DerivedData, and #14098 refuses that whenever an app source changed, since
a producer hours back recompiles everything anyway. So any focused run on a
pull request that touches Sources/ compiled cold: 809-995 s on the macOS 15
pool for #14216, whose compile admission adopted a distance-0 seed in 5.7 s
and compiled in 416 s.

The build job now does what compile admission does. It builds at the
canonical root under admission's DerivedData name, keys the seed the same
way, starts the download while packages resolve, and adopts the seed of the
tested revision or its nearest ancestor with one (seed_derived_data.py, the
per-push seeds from seed-derived-data.yml). A fresh product is stamped from
the canonical tree and relocated, as admission packages it. The warm
DerivedData restore, input recording and publishing steps go away; every
seed miss or failure is still a cold build.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The E2E workflow now uses canonical compile-admission paths and attempts to adopt a DerivedData seed before building. It updates product handling, Xcode selection, reporting, and cleanup. It removes the prior DerivedData packaging and publishing steps and the scheduled seed-dispatch workflow.

Changes

E2E DerivedData Seed Build

Layer / File(s) Summary
Canonical build setup
.github/workflows/test-e2e.yml, tests/test_ci_e2e_compilation_cache.py
The workflow uses canonical DerivedData and CAS paths, selects and forwards the Xcode app, and exposes the Swift package cache output. Tests configure the canonical root and verify the paths.
DerivedData seed adoption
.github/workflows/test-e2e.yml, .github/workflows/ci-macos.yml, .github/workflows/e2e-derived-data-seed.yml, tests/test_ci_e2e_compilation_cache.py, tests/test_e2e_warm_derived_data.py, tests/test_reuse_app_host_products.py, tests/test_seed_derived_data.py
The workflow computes a seed key, starts the download, resolves packages, and attempts seed adoption before building. It clears the inode override after adoption runs. Tests check the sequence, cleanup condition, and helper reference. The scheduled seed-dispatch workflow and interrupted-adoption test were removed.
Product build and reporting
.github/workflows/test-e2e.yml, tests/test_ci_e2e_compilation_cache.py, tests/test_ci_self_hosted_guard.sh
The workflow uses canonical-build, stamps and restores newly built products, restricts cleanup to canonical paths, and reports seed details. The DerivedData packaging and publishing steps were removed. Tests update the build-command check and continuation-step allowlist.

A failed seed adoption can leave the E2E build using seeded data instead of the intended clean fallback. The product impact is unproven, but this narrow failure path remains a bounded risk.

Discard the adopted seed after a post-swap failure.

If warm.replay() or the Darwin defaults command fails after .seed is renamed to derived, the exception handler reports hit=false but keeps the adopted directory. The workflow ignores that failure and canonical-build uses the retained seed instead of the documented cold-build fallback.

The staged restore is complete, and partial replay is conservative for input timestamps, so this does not establish invalid build products. It does violate the failure fallback contract.

Comment thread .github/workflows/test-e2e.yml
The first dispatches through this branch missed with no-seed: the seed key
hashes xcodebuild -version, and E2E selected the default macOS 15 pin
(Xcode 26.3, key 4901ab49...) while admission builds pull requests with
CMUX_CI_XCODE_APP_PR (Xcode 26.6, key bac52776...). The build job now takes
the same pin and hands it to the test job, as ci-macos.yml hands its pin to
the app-host shards.

The CAS path is a compiler argument, so the workspace-local path gave
every compile the adopted seed carried a different command line. The

Adopt sets IgnoreFileSystemDeviceInodeChanges before it can time out, so
gating the cleanup on a reported hit could leave it set on a self-hosted
runner. Also let the seed wiring test accept test-e2e.yml as a read-only
consumer of the admission seed.

Measured after merge (read-only; test-e2e.yml, step "Build the app-host and UI test product").

Pool Before (nothing adopted) After, seed hit After, no-seed
6 vCPU macOS 26 n=20, median 1,021 s n=16, 435 s none
12 vCPU macOS 26 n=9, 553 s n=14, 367.5 s n=8, 675 s
6 vCPU macOS 15 n=16, 880 s none n=8, 1,249 s
  • macOS 26: the seed cuts the build by 57% on 6 vCPU and 34% on 12 vCPU.
  • macOS 15: gets nothing. Every macOS 15 run logged "reason": "no-seed", which is the pool the PR body's 995 s / 809 s baseline came from. ci: seed the macOS 15 pool with its own Xcode #14315 adds a macOS 15 seed.
  • Unexplained: 8 of 22 builds on 12 vCPU also missed with no-seed.
  • Examples: hits on jobs 107752567724 and 107821710699; macOS 15 misses on jobs 107742629367 and 107752382166.

Correction to my measurement above. The before column counted only cold builds. Over all builds:

  • 6 vCPU macOS 26: 888 s (n=27) to 435 s (n=16, all seed hits), a 453 s gain.
  • 12 vCPU macOS 26: 553 s (n=15) to 518.5 s (n=22), a 34.5 s gain. A seed hit builds in 367.5 s, but 8 of the 22 builds missed with no-seed.
