Summary

Managed persistent SSH sessions now use cmux-tui as the terminal owner and OpenSSH as the authentication/carrier transport. This PR completes the remaining native integration around that migration:

  • Preserve the selected TUI session and individual SSH arguments through the shared launcher.
  • Keep reconnect, restore, split, tab, attach, close, respawn, and projection ownership on the same TUI session.
  • Route SSH browser CONNECT/WebSocket traffic through authenticated loopback-only routes while preserving IPv6 loopback.
  • Keep remote file drops and image transfer on the SSH-owned remote upload path.
  • Make bootstrap uploads portable on macOS and retain same-platform fallback only when no verified companion target exists.
  • Package SwiftPM resource bundles beside the app-bundled CLI so cmux --help and --version work from an extracted app.
  • Move the pure private/loopback port policy into the existing CmuxCloud package with package-level tests.

Legacy relay configurations remain a compatibility path. New managed persistent cmux ssh sessions use the TUI backend; this PR does not add new cmuxd-remote agent execution.

Testing

  • Exact pushed head: 5a300665c5.
  • Hosted TUI browser-proxy verification was dispatched for the preceding source-equivalent head; its exact-head rerun is in progress after the final Swift import fix.
  • The bundled-resource regression suite passes, including real SwiftPM bundle copying and invalidation checks: bash tests/test_build_app_bundled_resources.sh.
  • Swift syntax, package-resolved policy, and workspace package grouping checks pass locally.
  • The first app-host compile attempt found a missing CmuxCloud import in CloudBrowserAccessState.swift; that is fixed in 5a300665c5 and the PR check is rerunning.
  • A tagged controller build for the current head is pending: the controller has rejected submission before job creation with HTTP 429 (320 registered instances). No SSH or untagged build bypass was used.

Demo Video

Pending the exact-head tagged app build. The authorized Mac runtime dogfood will cover CLI help/version, bootstrap, managed SSH creation, input/selection, splits/tabs, reconnect/carrier loss, restore, respawn, file/image transfer, browser IPv4/IPv6 routes, and ownership rejection cases.

Checklist

  • Managed SSH terminal ownership is cmux-tui.
  • Remote relay allowlist is unchanged.
  • Browser routes remain authenticated and LoopbackOnly.
  • SwiftPM CLI resource packaging has a behavioral regression test.
  • Exact-head tagged Mac artifact and live dogfood.
  • Required CI fully green.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

SSH TUI links now pass session and SSH arguments. SSH browser routing can allow loopback targets under an explicit policy. SSH TUI resource checks and reconnect handling use updated conditions. Unsupported SSH artifact targets return no bundled artifact.

Changes

SSH link and browser proxy

Layer / File(s) Summary
SSH link argument forwarding
Packages/macOS/CmuxCloud/Sources/CmuxCloud/Link/CloudMachineLink.swift, Packages/macOS/CmuxCloudTui/Sources/CmuxCloudTui/CloudTuiCommandLine.swift, cmuxTests/CmuxTuiSurfaceProviderTests+LinkCancellation.swift
SSH links pass the selected session and SSH arguments to the TUI command line. The test checks session and route arguments, separate SSH argument pairs, and the client exit status.
Loopback browser routing policy
Packages/macOS/CmuxCloud/Sources/CmuxCloud/Link/SSHTuiConnection.swift, Sources/Cloud/PortForward/CloudPortRoutePlan.swift, Sources/Surfaces/CmuxTuiSurfaceProvider+PortForward.swift, Sources/Surfaces/CmuxTuiSurfaceProviders.swift, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/remote_browser_proxy.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/remote_cli.rs
The SSH browser proxy enables loopback routing. Proxy validation applies the setting to CONNECT and WebSocket targets. SSH port routes permit loopback URLs; unspecified hosts remain rejected and non-loopback hosts must be private-network hosts.

SSH TUI workspace lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
SSH TUI resource checks and presentation
Sources/Surfaces/SurfaceCatalog+CloudDirectoryMetadata.swift, Sources/Surfaces/SurfaceCatalog+Groups.swift, Sources/Surfaces/SurfaceCatalog+NameAuthority.swift, Sources/TerminalSurface+ImageTransferTarget.swift, cmuxTests/SSHTuiMigrationTests.swift
Directory presentation, workspace matching, terminal reservation, binding upgrades, and image-target checks use tuiMachineID or SSH workspace state. Tests cover SSH terminal links, port previews, and saved-directory presentation.
Reconnect, selection, and respawn behavior
Sources/Workspace+RemoteSessionLifecycle.swift, cmuxTests/SSHTuiMigrationTests.swift, tests_v2/test_ssh_tui_workspace_selection.py
Pane-targeted reconnect requests do not start the workspace-wide SSH reconnect path. Tests cover reconnect and disconnected respawn behavior, plus managed workload selection, continued input, and respawn.

Remote SSH artifact selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Unsupported SSH artifact handling
cmux-tui/crates/cmux-remote/src/ssh_artifacts.rs
Unsupported operating-system and architecture pairs return None. Tests check unsupported targets, missing checksums, and mismatched build identities.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f8838

A retained SSH projection can be routed through the Cloud image-transfer path after a workspace switches away from SSHTui, potentially breaking image paste in that narrow transition. This is a bounded issue; merging with an owner-aware correction is reasonable.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f8838

SSH browser access now reaches services on the remote machine’s loopback addresses. Viewer authentication and an explicit host allowlist constrain that access, but the complete routing behavior has not been verified end to end.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An authenticated SSH viewer can request connections to services on the configured remote loopback hosts across ports other than the explicitly rejected ports. The source does not establish that access is limited to the port of the browser resource that initiated it.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — CONNECT requires proxy Basic authentication before route creation. Direct WebSocket bridging requires its token and checks the normalized destination against the same allowed-host policy before creating a route.
  • observed — The CONNECT-to-WebSocket branch enters the bridge before the outer host-allowlist check, but the bridge checks its own destination and token before creating a network route. Ordinary HTTP requests are not forwarded.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The proxy attempts to close created routes when tunnel opening or handshakes fail. Available parser tests cover loopback opt-in, but do not provide runtime proof for repeated requests, route cleanup, or accepted-authority routing.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Exercise authenticated CONNECT and WebSocket requests against allowed and disallowed destinations at runtime, including repeated and failed connections, to verify the host boundary and route cleanup.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR includes changes unrelated to [#12938]. The CloudMachineLink session and SSH-argument forwarding, SSH browser-proxy loopback policy, surface catalog identity changes, reconnect routing, and managed-SSH workspace-selection tests do not implement remote binary upload, daemon launch, handshake, or bootstrap diagnostics. The SSH artifact fallback is related to bootstrap; these other changes are not.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The diff expands Sources/Cloud/PortForward/CloudPortRoutePlan.swift with SSH loopback URL policy. CloudPortRoutePlan is pure Sendable domain logic with a dedicated unit-test suite, and multiple browser/port-forward paths call it. It remains in the app target and depends on BrowserPanel.swift, which imports AppKit and WebKit. The PR adds no SwiftPM target or extraction. The surrounding SurfaceCatalog and Workspace changes are app-lifecycle composition, but the route-planning feature violates the package boundary rule.

Resolution

Extract the route-planning boundary from the app target. Create a small package target such as CmuxCloudPortRouting (or move the feature into an existing suitable package), expose CloudPortRoutePlan as its first public type, and move the pure URL validation, loopback policy, and route-plan tests there. Replace the BrowserInsecureHTTPSettings app dependency with a package-level private/loopback host policy. Keep provider, browser-panel, and workspace wiring in the app target.

Packages/macOS/CmuxRemoteSession/Sources/CmuxRemoteSession/Session/RemoteSessionCoordinator+DaemonHello.swift:43
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject hello responses without a Boolean ok. helloRemoteDaemonLocked only rejects ok: false. If ok is absent or has another type, it reads result and defaults the name, version, and capabilities. Bootstrap can then report ready with no required capabilities or treat every required capability as missing and reinstall the daemon. The daemon hello handler emits OK: true, so reject invalid ok values before reading result.

🟡 Minor · Force the watchdog to enter its sleep path before… · RemoteDaemonUploadProcessTests.swift:30-137

Packages/macOS/CmuxRemoteSession/Tests/CmuxRemoteSessionTests/RemoteDaemonUploadProcessTests.swift:30-137
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Force the watchdog to enter its sleep path before completing the upload.

The test runs the actual remoteDaemonUploadScript, but it writes the complete binary and closes stdin immediately. cat and the watchdog run asynchronously. cat can finish before the watchdog reaches sleep, so a regression that removes the watchdog descriptor closes can pass without leaving a live descendant writer.

Keep stdin open with a partial payload until a bounded test sleep helper signals that the watchdog reached its loop. Then write the remaining payload and perform the existing promotion assertion.

Coordination from the #13648 SSH workspace-selection session: the user now requires every SSH-backed agent session to use cmux-tui, with no agent execution on cmuxd-remote. This PR already owns the shared SSH transport migration, so I am avoiding a competing implementation.

Current-main entrypoints to include in the migration:

  • Workspace.remotePTYAttachStartupCommand / SSHPTYAttachStartupCommandBuilder still construct the legacy attach path.
  • Workspace+RemoteSurfaceResumeBinding.swift routes approved agent resume through persistent daemon slot/PTY ownership.
  • Workspace+AgentLifecycle.swift reuses that attach command during restore/takeover; Workspace+RemotePTYRespawnRouting.swift uses it for respawn.
  • Agent fork into a new workspace, pane, or tab in Workspace.swift also carries the remote startup command/configuration.

Please keep creation, resume, fork, respawn, and reconnect on the same cmux-tui terminal owner, with no silent legacy-agent fallback. For #13648, selection verification must exercise a cmux-tui-backed SSH agent workspace and assert stable remote terminal identity plus continuing output across repeated selection. PR #14044 is renderer-only and does not establish this transport requirement.

I have no transport edits or running verification sessions in the #13648 worktree. Tagged runtime verification remains pending; the last fleet attempt failed before job creation with backend HTTP 507 (47 GiB available, 50 GiB required).

Attribution: unregistered; session issue-13648-ssh-workspace-selection; intention: coordinate shared transport ownership and preserve the SSH selection regression scope.

Coordinating #13205 / #13866 with this managed-SSH migration under the user's directive that all SSH-backed agent sessions run on cmux-tui.

The preview fix adds no cmuxd-remote calls and starts no agent sessions. It uses SSHFileExplorerProvider / ProcessSSHFileExplorerTransport for bounded one-shot file reads (test -f ... && cat -- ...). Its entrypoint consumes the source terminal's managed-SSH connection (destination, port, identity, SSH options), effective remote cwd, and lifecycle/attempt identity; completion is discarded if that source changes.

Please preserve or expose those connection/cwd/lifecycle contracts on the cmux-tui-backed native terminal projection, or identify the replacement API so #13866 can adapt. Session creation, bootstrap, reconnect, and agent execution remain owned by this migration; #13866 will not add or extend legacy-daemon execution. Its current loopback SSH click fixture verifies file transfer and pointer routing only, not cmux-tui-backed agent-session execution. Full session-path dogfood must exercise the migrated cmux-tui session before that claim is made.

@austinywang The user has explicitly directed continued implementation, not an audit/handoff, until managed SSH agent execution is cmux-tui-backed. I am actively taking a non-overlapping contribution in the #13648 worktree: a CLI/debug-socket runtime regression that launches a managed SSH workload, verifies remote cmux-tui process ownership (rejecting cmuxd-remote), and checks output/identity across workspace selection. Please continue owning the shared bootstrap/native projection/restore migration in this PR and report the implementation SHA when ready for integration. I will keep transport production files untouched while implementing this regression so the two changes can compose.

Concrete implementation request from #13205, following the user's explicit instruction to continue the migration rather than stop at dependency notes:

Please resume #12956 and identify the active workspace/session and integration SHA. Neither 12938-orbstack-daemon-bootstrap nor an issue-12938/12956 workspace exists on this host; #13648 is also being coordinated directly to prevent competing shared transport patches.

Exact legacy launch chain on current branch:

  1. CMUXCLI.runSSHWithOptions selects usesPersistentSSHPTY, allocates persistentDaemonSlot, and constructs buildReusableForegroundAuthThenSSHPTYAttachStartupCommand before workspace.create / workspace.remote.configure.
  2. Workspace.persistentSSHResumeContext and persistentSSHResumeCommand require that daemon slot and use SSHPTYAttachStartupCommandBuilder; restore/takeover, fork, respawn, and reconnect consume the same ownership.
  3. Rust already exposes remote_cli::connect_managed_ssh(ManagedSshOptions) and machine_runtime uses it. Please route native managed SSH creation through that cmux-tui owner and the existing native surface-provider projection, with no legacy agent fallback, rather than merely swapping executable names in the legacy protocol.

Required focused behavior: start a remote agent command in a cmux-tui terminal, capture terminal/session identity and output, lose/reestablish its SSH carrier, reattach to that same identity with continuing output, then resume/fork/respawn through shared creation and explicitly close it. Preserve SSH destination/options and effective remote cwd for #13205 file preview. Return code/test evidence and the concrete API to integrate; an audit-only reply does not satisfy the user's request.

Implementation contribution is now pushed: 3983f4c35e on issue-13648-ssh-workspace-selection adds tests_v2/test_ssh_tui_workspace_selection.py. It runs actual managed cmux ssh --command against an explicit Linux fixture, requires cmux-tui process ancestry and rejects cmuxd-remote, then checks the same process responds after six workspace selection cycles. It asserts tagged socket/bundle/bundled-CLI identity before every mutation and cleans up the workload and test window. This is not yet runtime-verified; no app artifact exists from the failed admission attempts.

The #13205 session and I have agreed: #13205 owns preview compatibility; #13648 will take shared launch/resume/fork/respawn migration if this PR has no reachable live owner. Your head advanced to 4ced8400f16d69d24d5cecbdf8372323463c4a55, so please identify the active session and current production files being edited to prevent overlap. I am continuing with the shared cmux-tui link/creation lifecycle and integration work, not handing off at this test commit. SSH remoteConfiguration/destination/options, effectivePanelDirectory, and lifecycle/attempt fencing remain required contracts.

The user and #13205 session have assigned #13648 shared managed-SSH implementation ownership unless a live owner here confirms otherwise; #13205 owns preview integration. No live ownership reply has arrived. I am continuing on the canonical PR branch, preserving its current 4ced8400f1 history and integrating it with current main plus focused tests/shared-link support via a normal fast-forward push (no force push).

Current contribution: 0b14eb013af5ee3ac6baafd3574119eac3b56281 merges this PR into the integration worktree; it includes process-level coverage and a fix forwarding selected session and SSH options to cmux-tui headless links, plus the managed-workspace ownership/selection runtime regression. It does NOT yet complete managed native creation/resume/fork/respawn migration. I remain actively implementing that path and will not mark it ready from these preparatory commits.

Disposable Linux fixture is now available in an owned container with dedicated fixture user/home, no host mounts, and loopback-only SSH via the existing jump host. #13205 has access metadata for compatibility tests. No credentials are published here.

Attribution: unregistered; session issue-13648-ssh-workspace-selection; intention: active shared migration implementation, retaining SSH connection/cwd/lifecycle contracts.

Current-head comment closeout on f8838dae1e1fffedd2f11ac5b7dd785d44047596:

  • IPv6 loopback review finding: fixed. Both CONNECT and WebSocket route creation now preserve the validated host (127.0.0.1 or ::1) instead of hardcoding IPv4. The proxy still requires per-process credentials, an explicit loopback opt-in, an allowlist, and RoutePolicy::LoopbackOnly.
  • Respawn fixture finding: fixed. The SSH selection test creates a disposable /tmp/cmux-ssh-respawn-<token> directory through the workload before respawn and asserts the replacement reports that exact cwd.
  • Native SSH file/drop routing: fixed. TUI-owned SSH surfaces now resolve both paste and drag/drop to the remote upload target, so local file paths are not inserted into the remote shell.

Validation after these repairs is running on the pushed head. The focused Swift run previously passed 70 tests; required CI passed 93 changed-suite tests on the prior head. The final-head rerun and updated TUI artifact run are in progress.

Security scope: the SSH browser proxy is intentionally host-loopback-only for the authenticated SSH session. It does not accept arbitrary private or public destinations; credentials are per proxy process, WebSocket access uses a separate token, and route creation preserves the validated loopback host.

Use the Cloud-only identity for projected resources.

When an SSH projection remains while the current configuration no longer routes through SSHTui, usesSSHTui is false. The projection still has a non-nil tuiMachineID, so line 39 can select .cloud and route paste through the Cloud image path. Check cloudMachineID instead.

Current-head follow-up on f90723f5a7d8878c0d6d258c21b014ed7a105611:

  • Addressed the stale-projection image-routing comment. The Cloud image path now requires cloudMachineID; SSH TUI projections route through the remote upload path only when the workspace actually uses SSHTui.
  • The earlier IPv6 route and fixture-directory comments remain fixed on the branch.

I’m rerunning the final-head static checks, focused Swift tests, and tagged build now.

Follow-up fix opened: #14755

Root cause: the TUI carrier was started before interactive SSH authentication. Password/host-key hosts could not answer the headless carrier's prompt, so nightly hung or surfaced the generic Cloud VM error. The follow-up adds bounded BatchMode=yes carrier startup so the existing auth_required foreground OpenSSH flow runs first, then retries through the shared ControlMaster. It also adds a regression test for the carrier arguments.

Correction: the proper follow-up PR is #14756. It targets main directly so the CLA policy guard can run. #14755 was an invalid-base draft and has been closed.
