Summary

Refs #12537. This branch owns Cloud terminal creation latency, the connection card, optimistic pane creation, and the relaunch/open paths of Cloud panes. Renderer/first-frame work stays coordinated with #12478 and #12587.

No loading surfaces; optimistic panes and one actionable card

  • The "Starting Cloud terminal" pending pane and the top-right progress toast are gone. Cmd+D, Cmd+Shift+D, Cmd+T, the divider split button, and the sidebar New Terminal reserve the real pane at the requested spot the moment the user acts (Workspace+CloudTerminalReservation), create the terminal behind it, and adopt the pane when the attachment resolves (SurfaceCatalog.project(…, adopting:) → CmuxTuiSurfaceProvider.materialize(…, adopting:)). Keystrokes typed before adoption are relayed to the terminal. Nothing is shown while it waits: no card, no placeholder text, no tab spinner.
  • The reconnect card no longer flashes and never says "unavailable" for a pane that recovers. Every provider refresh re-runs reconnect, and every fence went .disconnected then .connecting; the card reacted to each sample. CloudTerminalConnectionPresentationPolicy shows no progress card at all: a connecting or reconnecting pane keeps its last frame and fills in when usable. The only card is Reconnect, after 8 s of continuously failing automatic recovery (or at once when recovery was given up), cleared the moment the attachment is usable. The legacy managed-workspace path is silent while connecting as well.
  • Relaunch restoration. Restored placeholders were re-projected one at a time, each after its own attach resolved, with a one-shot 3 s attach budget while the machine link was still coming up, then parked a "Cloud terminal could not start" card (the screenshot in the thread). reprojectRestoredPanes now swaps every placeholder synchronously for a reserved native pane in the same Bonsplit pane, so the whole layout is in place before any round trip, and each pane attaches in parallel through attachReservedTerminalPane: a retry loop on the background backoff (1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30 s) that keeps going while the link comes up. Reconnect appears only after four failed rounds and restarts the loop at once; closing the pane cancels it; an exited terminal closes its pane.
  • Opening a Cloud workspace shows the whole layout at once. LayoutProjectionWalk and projectGroup reserve every pane of the machine layout synchronously (same tree order as before, divider ratios applied immediately), record their projections up front so the bound-workspace coordinator never projects a duplicate, and attach all of them in parallel. The sidebar and nested-terminal navigation use the optimistic host; socket callers keep the awaited host so surface_ids stay authoritative.
  • Terminals detaching for no visible reason. A refresh pass re-resolves every session after any disconnect or socket change; the lookup rides the same link, so a transient "transport closed before response" (two in the dogfood log at 02:24:50 and 02:25:36) answered retryable for panes whose byte stream was healthy, and those were fenced and torn down. CloudAttachmentReconcileDecision keeps attached streams on retryable/noPlacement; a dead stream still reports itself.

Earlier slices on this branch (unchanged): one authoritative placement snapshot per create with a revision fence, one active attempt per intent with receipt-based retry, typed failure causes.

Not in this PR: the machine-provisioning "Opening Base" pane (CloudVMLoadingPanel) is a separate flow, and the root cause of the link transport closing mid-request needs daemon-side evidence (see the dogfood notes in the thread).

Testing

  • Red-first regression CloudTerminalCardFlashRegressionTests fails on the previous code at production grace: a card on the first connecting sample, and "unavailable" during automatic recovery. The fix commit makes it pass.
  • CloudTerminalConnectionPresentationPolicyTests: policy table (nothing while connecting or attaching, Reconnect only after the grace or when recovery stopped), first attach never shows a card, a surface-id refresh bounce shows nothing (three cycles), persistent failure offers Reconnect and a usable attachment clears it.
  • CloudAttachmentReconcileDecisionTests: attached streams survive lookups that cannot answer; unattached ones are fenced and retried; authoritative answers apply to every phase.
  • SurfaceCatalogTests: opening a workspace optimistically reserves the whole layout (order and focus asserted) before any attach and records every projection; groups with unknown resources fall back to the awaited path.
  • CloudTerminalPaneReservationTests: input relay ordering/bounds/discard, store inline failure + retry by request id, cancelling one request leaves another running.
  • Updated CloudManualMirrorPresentationTests, CloudTerminalCreationCoordinatorTests, WorkspaceRemoteReconnectPolicyTests.
  • Localization audit: the disconnected, suspended, and error card keys had no catalog entries (English defaults only); they now carry all nine macOS locales. The six dead cloudTerminal.creation.* keys were removed. python3 scripts/localization_catalog.py check and scripts/lint-xcstrings.py pass. Sidebar labels are unchanged.
  • pbxproj wiring, whitespace, and the repository lints pass.
  • Focused unit suites and the tagged build on the pushed HEAD: in progress; results appended when they land.

Checklist

  • Added behavior regression coverage (red-first commit)
  • Local deterministic checks and localization audit pass
  • Focused tests and tagged build pass on the pushed HEAD
  • Dogfood on the authenticated dev build with the GCP dev backend

A valid Cloud terminal that exceeds the handshake window can disconnect and retry before attaching, adding startup latency. Automatic recovery limits the impact, but this remaining risk should be tracked before merge.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 40.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 90 functions across 41 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

The PR adds cloudPaneCreationFailureStore.cancelAll() at Sources/Workspace.swift:10498. Workspace and teardownPanelResources are not marked @MainActor, while CloudPaneCreationFailureStore and cancelAll() are explicitly @MainActor (Sources/Surfaces/CloudPaneCreationFailureStore.swift:5,103). This creates a new UI-bound store access from a nonisolated teardown path without an explicit MainActor boundary. Other new mutable coordinators and request state have explicit MainActor isolation, and SwiftUI views are allowed cases.

Resolution

Keep teardown cancellation on the MainActor. Mark teardownAllPanels and teardownPanelResources (and any required caller chain) @MainActor, then update callers as needed. Alternatively, use an explicit, correctly justified MainActor hop for cancelAll(). Do not call the MainActor-isolated store directly from the nonisolated method.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

The new CloudTerminalCreationRequest.prepare(using:socketPath:) is @MainActor but performs the retry receipt command and JSON/receipt parsing at lines 27–52. Both changed provider creation paths call it from actor-isolated methods (CmuxTuiSurfaceProvider+LayoutCreation.swift:13 and CmuxTuiSurfaceProvider+TerminalCreation.swift:25). The coordinator also invokes the create closure from an @MainActor task. This puts the new retry network/parsing work on UI isolation without an explicit concurrent boundary. The separate CloudTerminalLayoutCreation.run operation correctly uses @concurrent, so that path does not remove the request lookup violation.

Resolution

Keep request state transitions on @MainActor, but move the receipt lookup and response parsing into a Sendable nonisolated helper with an @concurrent boundary (or an equivalent explicitly off-actor operation). Await that helper from prepare, then apply attemptKey and other state changes on MainActor. Ensure the standard terminal creation path also uses the same off-actor boundary for any newly added receipt lookup and parsing.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The PR adds core Cloud terminal creation logic to the app target without a SwiftPM boundary. CloudTerminalCreationRequest, CloudTerminalCreationRetryResolution, and CloudTerminalLayoutCreation contain protocol, receipt parsing, idempotency, snapshot, and revision-retry logic. They use injected CloudTuiCommandRunning fakes and have focused tests that do not require AppKit or SwiftUI. The request is shared by both standard and layout terminal creation paths. The reviewed range changes no Package.swift or Packages/ path. UI views and workspace composition are allowed, but this remote-creation core matches the rule's provider/protocol/parsing/workstream criteria.

Resolution

Create a small Packages/macOS/CmuxCloudTerminalCreation package and add its product to the app and test targets. The smallest extraction cut is the remote creation core: expose CloudTerminalCommandRunning first, then move CloudTerminalCreationRequest, CloudTerminalCreationRetryResolution, the package-owned creation receipt/value types, and the layout creation policy with its snapshot and revision-fence models. Keep CmuxTuiSurfaceProvider adapters, SurfaceResource recording, workspace stores/coordinators, and SwiftUI views in the app target. Add package-level unit tests for receipt parsing, idempotency transitions, snapshot validation, and bounded revision retry.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The new Swift UI uses localized APIs, but the edited catalog entries are incomplete. Resources/Localizable.xcstrings changes cloudTerminal.creation.failed.detail, cloudTerminal.creation.failed.title, and cloudPane.newTerminalFailed.title, but these entries omit bs, da, it, km, nb, pl, pt-BR, ru, th, tr, and uk, although those locale codes exist elsewhere in the touched catalog. The recovery entry is complete. The changed Swift text is therefore not translated for every supported catalog locale.

Resolution

Add translated entries for the 11 missing locales to the three changed catalog keys. Also verify the newly displayed cloudTerminal.creation.starting text has translations for all supported locales, rather than relying on the existing partial entry.

Reviewed the package-boundary suggestion. CloudTerminalLayoutCreation is the app provider's adapter over the existing app-owned CloudVMState, CmuxTuiSnapshotParser, SurfaceMachineID, ProviderError, and CloudOperationContext; import Foundation alone does not make that dependency graph independent. A new tiny CmuxCloudTerminalCore would either duplicate those graph/receipt contracts or require a broader Cloud-domain migration. The repository architecture skill requires a whole-domain package boundary, so I am keeping this adapter with its existing provider in this issue fix. The trade-off is that its integration tests remain app-host tests; the injected runner still gives behavioral coverage without live Cloud machines. A cohesive Cloud-domain extraction is separate follow-up work.

The two inline CodeRabbit findings are now answered and resolved: the fixed-duration negative wait was removed, and the obsolete startup deadline/gate no longer exists. The canonical HQ autoreview passed on 342fd7e with no actionable findings; the final test-only wait removal is being rechecked on current HEAD. Full runtime/video and median/tail evidence remain explicitly pending.

Consume the existing fixture correction from f2373f2 after the hosted test target reported the NSPoint/NSRect mismatch.
Consume the existing fixture corrections from 3fd8012. The provider schedules resolution retries; an idle session has no reconnect card until an unavailable state is established.
Consume the inline placement-failure and displayed-failure identity design from cmux114 commit b607869, adapted to the existing request coordinator. A production-source harness reproduces stale Retry affecting a newer request before the guard and leaving it untouched after.

Refs #12537. A native Cloud pane showed the reconnecting card on the first
connecting sample and switched to "Cloud session unavailable" on a
disconnect that automatic recovery repaired a moment later. Both tests use
the session's public API at production grace and fail on the current code.

Refs #12537.

The reconnect card flashed on every healthy handoff and announced
"unavailable" for disconnects that automatic recovery repaired within a
second: every provider refresh re-ran reconnect, and each fence went
disconnected then connecting with no grace anywhere. The session now runs
one presentation episode per unusable stretch: silent inside a grace,
progress after it while recovery is automatic, Reconnect only once recovery
has kept failing, and cleared the moment the attachment is usable. A first
attach says connecting; a pane that already showed content says
reconnecting. An explicit Reconnect shows progress at once.

Cloud terminal creation no longer shows a separate "Starting Cloud
terminal" pane or toast. Every entrypoint (Cmd+D, Cmd+Shift+D, Cmd+T, the
divider split button, the sidebar New Terminal) reserves the real pane at
the requested spot immediately, creates the terminal behind it, and adopts
the pane when the attachment resolves. Input typed before adoption is
relayed to the terminal. A failure is shown inside the pane with Retry on
the same request id; closing the pane cancels only that request.

Adds the nine-locale overlay strings the cards use and removes the dead
pending-panel keys.
