469-480: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔴 Critical | ⚡ Quick winFix the non-exhaustive switch over
displayModeinreadSurfaceSelection().
MarkdownPanelDisplayModenow has three cases (preview,edit,text), added at lines 8-10 of this file. The switch inreadSurfaceSelection()only handles.textand.preview. Swift requires an exhaustive switch over an enum without adefaultcase. This switch does not compile once.editexists as a case.Add a case for
.edit. Since.editmode uses the rendered web view (same as.preview), route it through the same renderer-based selection read.🐛 Proposed fix

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Create a unique temporary directory.
(UUID().uuidString) is literal text. The test always uses the same directory path. A prior interrupted run or concurrent test can make createDirectory fail.

+ .appendingPathComponent("cmux-markdown-inline-edit-\(UUID().uuidString)", isDirectory: true)As per coding guidelines, tests must not depend on shared file state that is not reset per test.

<br> serializes to a literal backslash-n instead of a line break.
The string literal '\\n' produces the two characters \ and n. Every soft line break the editor inserts is therefore written into the panel buffer as the text \n, and that text is saved to the file. Compare Line 431 and Line 482, which use a single backslash for a real newline.
Use a markdown hard break instead.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
setEditing is not idempotent, so a routine SwiftUI update can discard one edit.
updateNSView runs on every SwiftUI update of MarkdownPanelView. Line 127 calls setEditing(isEditing) unconditionally, and setEditing always evaluates window.__cmuxSetMarkdownEditing(true). In the page, that call re-runs configureEditorLockedBlocks() and resets the serialization baseline with lastSerializedEdit = serializeMarkdownDocument().
While the user types, panel.content changes on every accepted edit, so these updates interleave with DOM mutations. If the baseline reset lands after a DOM mutation but before the pending requestAnimationFrame callback, that callback observes markdown === lastSerializedEdit and suppresses the editMarkdown post. The panel buffer then never receives that mutation. If the user stops typing and saves at that point, the last edit is lost.
The structural cause is ownership: lastSerializedEdit in the page is a second owner of "what the panel already knows", while lastEditedMarkdown in the coordinator owns the same fact. A lifecycle call for editing state must not mutate the change-detection baseline. Make the baseline reset happen only on a real editing transition or a fresh document load, and keep the page's de-duplication state owned by the serialization path alone.
♻️ Proposed first cut: make the toggle a real transition
func setEditing(_ editing: Bool) {
+ let changed = isEditing != editing
isEditing = editing
guard let webView else { return }
+ guard changed || !hasAppliedEditingToPage else { return }
+ hasAppliedEditingToPage = true
let value = editing ? "true" : "false"
webView.evaluateJavaScript(
"window.__cmuxSetMarkdownEditing && window.__cmuxSetMarkdownEditing(\(value));",
completionHandler: nil
)
}Reset hasAppliedEditingToPage to false in loadShell and in close(), so didFinish still re-applies the state to the new document.

Hi Lawrence, really waiting for this one 🙏 Editing right in the rendered markdown is the thing I miss most in cmux. Thanks for building it! |
Problem
Markdown preview was read-only, and the raw editor was a separate surface. Formatted editing, tables, links, and saving did not share one document state.
