web: re-land instant dashboard navigation with SDK-accurate session cookies - #12191
Conversation
…on gate The edge gate and the private session key looked only for stack-refresh-<project>. Current Stack SDKs store the refresh token under hexclave-refresh-<project>--<suffix>, optionally with a __Host- prefix, and treat the old name as legacy, so signed-in users looped between sign-in and the dashboard. One shared resolver mirrors the SDK's cookie name patterns for both the middleware and the session key.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe PR centralizes dashboard session handling, gates dashboard routes with Stack refresh cookies, streams private sections behind static shells, and adds recovery states. It also scopes client message catalogs so the docs namespace loads in its route layout. ChangesDashboard session and streaming

The refresh-cookie name depends on an unpinned environment variable. Both requests build stack-refresh-${process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_STACK_PROJECT_ID ?? "none"}. hasStackSessionCookie in web/proxy.ts returns true without cookie matching when that variable is unset, so both assertions pass even if refresh-cookie matching breaks. Set the variable for the suite with beforeAll/afterAll and use TEST_STACK_PROJECT_ID from ./helpers/dashboard-session-mock.

Remove the mutable module-level currentUser.
Each test assigns currentUser before passing it as the explicit user prop. The signed-out test passes null, so its render is not order-dependent. Replace these assignments with local values such as user={sessionUser()} or user={null}. This removes shared test state and satisfies the test-isolation contract.

Assert the exact sign-in redirect target.
The current substring checks accept an incorrect return path such as /dashboard/teams. Assert the complete mocked redirect target.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Make unstable_rethrow preserve notFound errors. createNextNavigationMock.notFound throws Error("notFound"), but the helper only rethrows errors beginning with "redirect:". In dashboard-auth.ts, caught errors that pass through this mock can become { kind: "unavailable" } or null instead of propagating as navigation control flow. Re-throw the "notFound" marker from the shared helper.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Pass a render-error handler from the streaming-error test. DashboardSessionGuard runs inside Suspense, and the rejected-session test’s mocked redirect throws after the shell. React 19.2.3 calls onError and can still resolve allReady, so the current one-argument call can pass after only checking redirectedTo. Add the optional callback and use it in this test to assert the expected redirect error and reject unexpected errors. Adding the callback alone does not affect any current caller because all callers pass only node.

Re-lands #12121 (reverted in #12189) with the sign-in loop fixed.
The loop: the edge gate and the private session key only looked for
stack-refresh-<project>. Current Stack SDKs store the refresh token ashexclave-refresh-<project>--<suffix>(with a__Host-prefix on secure origins) and treat the old name as legacy, so every signed-in visitor was sent to sign-in and back. The fix: one resolver in
app/lib/stack-session-cookies.tsmirrors the SDK's refresh cookie name patterns and is used by both the middleware and the session key. Unit tests cover every name variant.Proof this time used a real browser, not hand-built cookies: headless Chromium signed in through Stack's own password form against a local production build with the dev Stack project. The browser received
hexclave-refresh-<project>--default, then loaded /dashboard/coderouter, /dashboard/cloud, /dashboard/coderouter and /dashboard, staying on each page with the account email rendered and zero visits to /handler/sign-in.Everything else is the reviewed content of the original PR: private session cache, static shell with Suspense sections, edge redirect for cookieless visitors, prefetch opt-outs removed, docs namespace dropped from the shared client catalog.
