Summary

Fixes #8359.

  • Retire read notification entries from the live sidebar preview when terminal input resumes in a workspace.
  • Retire the same stale read previews when a non-manual agent lifecycle transitions back to running.
  • Keep notification feed history durable and leave unrelated unread alerts visible.
  • Preserve the regression workflow as two commits: the failing behavior test first, then the fix.

Testing

  • swift test --package-path Packages/macOS/CmuxNotifications --disable-sandbox (115 tests passed)
  • swift test --package-path Packages/macOS/CmuxNotifications --disable-sandbox --filter NotificationDismissalModelTests (22 tests passed)
  • swiftc -parse on all changed Swift files
  • ./scripts/lint-pbxproj-test-wiring.sh
  • python3 scripts/check-package-resolved-policy.py
  • python3 scripts/check-workspace-package-groups.py --check
  • ./scripts/check-pbxproj.sh
  • git diff --check
  • Scoped test-determinism scan passed; the full scan retains one pre-existing finding in web/tests/vm-auth-cache.test.ts.

A local app build/launch and UI recording were not run because this recovery task does not authorize local Xcode/XCUITest or tagged launch builds. The requested scripts/swift_file_length_budget.py and .github/swift-file-length-budget.tsv are absent from this checkout.

Demo Video

Not captured; dogfood requires an authorized tagged build/remote verification.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds sidebar notification preview queries and clearing operations. Terminal interaction and non-manual agent resumption now retire read previews while preserving notification history. Tests cover selection gates, unread entries, and mutation publication.

Changes

Sidebar notification preview retirement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Notification preview store contract
Sources/TerminalNotificationStore.swift, Packages/macOS/CmuxNotifications/Sources/CmuxNotifications/NotificationDismissalHosting.swift, Sources/TabManager+NotificationDismissalHosting.swift, Packages/macOS/CmuxNotifications/Tests/CmuxNotificationsTests/UserNotificationCenterServiceTests.swift
The store detects read latest notifications and removes read previews while preserving unread entries. The removal path updates history, system notifications, and dismissal events. The hosting protocol and TabManager expose these operations.
Terminal interaction dismissal
Packages/macOS/CmuxNotifications/Sources/CmuxNotifications/NotificationDismissalModel.swift, Packages/macOS/CmuxNotifications/Tests/CmuxNotificationsTests/NotificationDismissalModelTests.swift, cmuxTests/TerminalNotificationDirectInteractionTests.swift
Terminal interaction clears eligible sidebar previews and returns whether dismissal or preview clearing changed state. Tests cover selection gates, mutation logging, publication, unread entries, and feed-history preservation.
Agent resume integration
Sources/ControlSidebarPanelOwner.swift
Non-manual transitions into .running resolve and validate the target panel, then clear its sidebar notification previews.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5aa95

The PR correctly retires stale read sidebar previews while preserving unread alerts and notification history. It is mergeable with owner awareness of a bounded cleanup issue: duplicate pending-notification removal work and a small risk that interrupted asynchronous cleanup could temporarily leave an OS notification stale.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes a clear summary and detailed testing results. It explains why UI verification and the demo video were not provided; the missing checklist and review-trigger sections are non-critical omissions.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

PASS: The changed production Swift declarations remain explicitly MainActor-isolated. NotificationDismissalHosting, NotificationDismissalModel, ControlSidebarPanelOwner, TabManager, and TerminalNotificationStore are all @MainActor; the new store methods inherit that boundary. Lifecycle mutations enter ControlSidebarPanelOwner through controlSidebarSchedulePanelOwnedMutation, whose callback is explicitly @MainActor. Terminal-input callbacks also invoke the existing @MainActor path. The diff adds no implicit MainActor value model, async service protocol, shared mutable Sendable reference, or background access to the UI-bound store. Existing isolation annotations and debt are not materially worsened.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS: The PR adds no blocking or timing-based synchronization in production Swift. The changed production code only adds synchronous state queries, filtering, and notification-store mutations. A zero-context diff scan found no added semaphores, waits, sleeps, delayed dispatch, timers, main-queue sync, polling, or manual locks. The semaphore, Task.sleep, lock, and DispatchQueue.main.asyncAfter matches are pre-existing context; the new synchronization-looking assertions are test-only state recording.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The PR does not change browser socket automation. The PR diff changes 11 notification/TUI/documentation files, while Sources/TerminalController.swift and Packages/macOS/CmuxControlSocket/Sources/CmuxControlSocket/Wire/ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift are unchanged. The diff contains no browser.*, worker-router, WebKit wait, or policy-routing changes. Therefore no stated failure condition applies.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

PASS: The diff adds no synchronous agent-history load. The new @MainActor terminal-input path reads the in-memory notification index and filters the active notification array, then calls NotificationFeedHistoryStore.markRead(ids:). That store only applies an in-memory mutation and schedules persistence through the existing NotificationFeedHistoryPersistence actor. The lifecycle path likewise calls only the in-memory clearSidebarNotificationPreviews operation. No added Swift lines reference RestorableAgentSessionIndex.load(), agent stores, transcripts, trajectory files, JSON decoding, directory scans, or syscalls. The existing notification-feed load remains in the actor-backed asynchronous initializer and is unchanged.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS. The PR does not replace a fresh persistence or history read with an opportunistic cache. NotificationIndexes.latestByTabId pre-dates the PR and is rebuilt from notifications in the didSet path. The new hasSidebarNotificationPreview read uses that event-driven index only to gate a transient live-sidebar hint. clearSidebarNotificationPreviews scans the current notifications array, then marks the removed IDs read in notificationFeedHistory; it does not derive persisted history data from the index. The history store is unchanged and already queues mutations before its load completes, then replays them after loading. No changed undo, snapshot, or persistence path has an unhandled cold or stale cache.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS — The diff adds no TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, or build/runtime script changes. The only changed non-Swift executable is Rust. Its timing-related additions are bounded handoff waits and process cleanup (recv_timeout, try_wait, and wait after kill), not fixed sleeps, delayed dispatch, timers, or polling used to hide a race. The Swift notification changes are outside this check’s scope.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

The new lifecycle path repeatedly filters an unbounded active notification collection. ControlSidebarPanelOwner.setAgentLifecycle calls clearSidebarNotificationPreviews for every non-manual transition into .running (Sources/ControlSidebarPanelOwner.swift:96-110). TerminalNotificationStore.clearSidebarNotificationPreviews scans all notifications with a predicate (Sources/TerminalNotificationStore.swift:1072-1073), even when the workspace has no read preview. Multiple agent/workspace transitions therefore rescan the full collection, which violates the rule for notification paths that filter unbounded collections on each event. The active notifications array has no production retention bound; the 1,000/2,000 limits apply to durable history. The new removeNotifications implementation itself is a linear one-pass batch removal, and the Set change improves complexity, so those parts do not fail the check.

Resolution

Use the existing indexed hasSidebarNotificationPreview(forTabId:) as a guard in ControlSidebarPanelOwner before calling clearSidebarNotificationPreviews, for both workspace and dock stores. This makes no-op lifecycle events O(1) and scans only when a candidate preview exists. If repeated candidate removals must also avoid a global scan, maintain a workspace-to-active-read-notification index and remove by that index, or batch multiple workspace targets into one pass over notifications.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

The diff does not introduce a prohibited production concurrency pattern. The new production paths are synchronous and actor-isolated: dismissNotificationOnTerminalInteraction, setAgentLifecycle, and clearSidebarNotificationPreviews add no DispatchQueue, Task, completion-handler, or async/await usage. TerminalNotificationStore remains the pre-existing @MainActor ObservableObject with the same @Published state declarations in the base and head. The only new Combine usage is objectWillChange.sink in an XCTest, with its cancellable cancelled in defer, to verify one existing store publication. This is test instrumentation of a legacy boundary, not new Combine app state or async flow.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

PASS: The PR diff adds no async, nonisolated async, or @concurrent declarations. The changed model, owner, and TerminalNotificationStore code is synchronous and @MainActor-isolated. The existing asynchronous UserNotifications calls remain unchanged and already cross the dedicated operationQueue worker boundary in UserNotificationCenterService; the PR does not introduce an unbounded heavy async call from UI isolation or an invalid annotation.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

PASS. The diff keeps the activity-boundary policy in the existing CmuxNotifications SwiftPM target: NotificationDismissalModel uses the package protocol and its behavior is covered by package tests. The app-target additions are composition and storage integration. TabManager+NotificationDismissalHosting adapts the package protocol, ControlSidebarPanelOwner handles app lifecycle state, and TerminalNotificationStore must perform AppKit/UserNotifications, mobile-event, persisted-history, and sidebar publication side effects through app-owned state. These changes do not introduce a separate reusable domain feature that is hidden in Sources/ without a package boundary.

Cancel pending notification requests in the batched removal.

clearSidebarNotificationPreviews reaches removeNotifications, which removes only delivered requests at line 1986. The notification request uses the same UUID string, so a pending request can survive and later display stale content. Also call removePendingNotificationRequests(withIdentifiers: removedIDStrings).

Addressed in b8e4c30. ControlSidebarPanelOwner now uses the indexed hasSidebarNotificationPreview gate for workspace and dock lifecycle resumes, avoiding a full active-notification scan when the latest preview is absent or unread. Added a focused regression proving an unread latest preview preserves older read entries and creates no tombstone. Focused validation: 30 CmuxNotifications tests passed, changed Swift files parsed, and the warning-budget check reports 0 actual warnings.
