Summary

  • Keep already-minimized main windows in the Dock when the system-wide Show/Hide hotkey activates cmux while it is inactive but not hidden.
  • Reveal only currently visible, non-miniaturized main windows in that path; preserve the existing hidden-application fallback that restores minimized windows when no captured or dismissed targets exist.
  • Add behavior-level coverage for the reported visible-plus-minimized window state and correct the hidden fallback fixture.

The inactive path previously grouped visible and miniaturized windows together, then sent every target through reveal(), which deminiaturizes its window.

Fixes #9991

Testing

  • Red proof: test-only commit 13dcefdd in hosted run 32807694065 executed the exact regression test once and failed at the minimized-window assertion.
  • Fixed head 792917af: lifecycle suite passed 4 tests in 1 suite, including backgroundHotkeyLeavesMiniaturizedWindowsInTheDock().
  • Fixed head 792917af: controller suite passed 11 tests with 0 failures.
  • Passed git diff --check, Swift frontend parsing for all three changed Swift files, test wiring lint (703 files), pbxproj normalization check, Package.resolved policy, workspace package grouping, and strict test-determinism check.
  • No local xcodebuild, XCUITest, tagged reload, or app launch was run, per the task constraint.
  • The requested .github/swift-file-length-budget.tsv and scripts/swift_file_length_budget.py do not exist on current main. The production file remains 507 lines, the pre-existing 520-line XCTest file does not grow, and the lifecycle test file is 207 lines. No warning-budget file was changed.
  • Localization audit: no user-facing strings or message catalogs changed.

Demo Video

  • Not recorded: the task explicitly prohibited a tagged reload or launched build. Runtime dogfood remains for handoff.

Summary by cubic

Fixes #9991 by keeping minimized main windows in the Dock when the global Show/Hide hotkey activates cmux while the app is inactive but visible. Previously, the hotkey revealed both visible and minimized windows; now it reveals only visible windows and restores minimized windows only when no visible or dismissed targets exist.

  • Adds lifecycle coverage for mixed visible/minimized and all-minimized states, and corrects the hidden-app fallback fixture.
  • Routes the browser skill contract through configured LINUX_RUNNER, defaulting to the Blacksmith runner.

Written for commit 68435c7. Summary will update on new commits.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the change, rationale, testing results, demo-video limitation, issue reference, and checklist status. It is sufficiently complete despite the absence of a demo video and unchecked review-trigger items.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The implementation satisfies issue #9991 by revealing only visible, non-miniaturized windows in the non-hidden path and restoring a miniaturized window only when no other targets exist. The added tests cover both visible-plus-miniaturized and entirely miniaturized states.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

PASS. The only production edit changes target selection in showApplicationWindows; it adds no actor-sensitive declarations, async boundaries, Sendable conformances, protocols, models, or shared reference types. MainWindowVisibilityController remains explicitly @MainActor, and its WindowOperations and Dependencies remain main-actor isolated. The added lifecycle tests are also explicitly @MainActor, which the rule allows.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS: The production diff only changes window-target filtering and the minimized-window fallback in showApplicationWindows. It adds no semaphore, blocking wait, sleep, delayed dispatch, polling loop, main-queue sync, timer, or manual lock. The added Swift test scaffolding is deterministic and contains no prohibited timing primitive.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The PR diff changes only MainWindowVisibilityController.swift and two visibility test files. It adds no browser.* socket command, WebKit wait, cookie callback, screenshot callback, injected page hook, worker router, or execution-policy change. The changed code only selects and reveals application windows. The policy explicitly allows direct show/focus behavior and applies to browser socket automation commands.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

PASS: The production diff only changes window-target filtering and the miniaturized-window fallback in MainWindowVisibilityController.showApplicationWindows. It adds no RestorableAgentSessionIndex.load(), agent store, transcript, trajectory, JSON/JSONL parsing, directory scan, or per-record syscall. The existing @MainActor interactive path remains free of expensive synchronous agent-history loads.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS: The production diff does not replace a fresh persistence, history, undo, or durable snapshot read with a cache. It continues to evaluate live NSWindow state through windowOperations.isVisible and isMiniaturized. The new fallback reads allWindows.filter { isMiniaturized } when dismissedWindowRestoreTargets is empty. dismissedWindowRestoreTargets is transient in-memory UI restore state, captured on dismiss events, filtered against current windows, and cleared; no persistence consumer or durable cache write exists in the changed file.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS: The pull-request diff contains only three Swift files: Sources/App/MainWindowVisibilityController.swift and two Swift test files. It introduces no TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, or build/runtime-script changes, and the exact diff adds no sleep, timer, polling, delay, or timeout construct. The rule explicitly scopes Swift timing to the separate Swift check, so this check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASS. The production diff changes showApplicationWindows to one linear allWindows.filter for visible targets and adds one linear miniaturized-window fallback. These scans are sequential, not nested inside a per-target scan. The existing allWindows.contains scans for captured and dismissed targets, plus existing uniqueWindows deduplication, are not introduced or made asymptotically worse by this change. Test-only collection code does not apply to the rule.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

PASS: The PR diff adds no legacy asynchronous patterns covered by the rule. The production change only updates synchronous window-target filtering in showApplicationWindows; the added tests use synchronous dependency closures. The exact diff contains no DispatchQueue, DispatchGroup, Task, Combine, completion-handler, async, or await additions, and construct counts remain zero in all three changed Swift files.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

PASS — The Swift diff changes only synchronous window-selection logic and synchronous tests. MainWindowVisibilityController remains @MainActor; the changed methods are not async, nonisolated, or @concurrent. No CPU-, file-, parsing-, or network-heavy async helper or UI call-site was introduced. The lifecycle tests are also explicitly @MainActor.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

PASS — The production diff only changes target selection in MainWindowVisibilityController.showApplicationWindows. The controller is @MainActor AppKit lifecycle glue that directly manages NSWindow and NSApplication state, hiding, unhiding, activation, and window ordering. It does not introduce reusable domain logic, a cross-surface data model, or a new independently packageable feature. This matches the policy exception for AppKit glue and app-lifecycle composition.

Greptile Summary

This PR changes global-hotkey activation so an inactive, non-hidden cmux reveals only visible, non-miniaturized main windows and leaves minimized windows in the Dock.

  • Replaces the visible-or-miniaturized target set with visible, non-miniaturized targets.
  • Retains the hidden-application fallback that restores minimized windows when no captured or dismissed targets exist.
  • Adds lifecycle coverage for mixed visible and minimized windows and corrects the hidden fallback fixture.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge with no actionable defects identified in the changed behavior.

The target-selection change matches the stated minimized-window preservation contract, retains the hidden-application restoration fallback, and is covered by focused controller and lifecycle tests.

Important Files Changed

Filename Overview
Sources/App/MainWindowVisibilityController.swift Refines inactive application reveal-target selection to exclude minimized windows while retaining the existing hidden-application fallback.
cmuxTests/MainWindowVisibilityControllerTests.swift Corrects the fallback test to model a hidden application and verifies restoration of its minimized window.
cmuxTests/MainWindowVisibilityLifecycleTests.swift Adds behavior-level coverage proving that global-hotkey activation focuses the visible window without deminiaturizing its minimized sibling.

Reporter of #9991 here. Thanks for picking this up — the direction is right and the filter change fixes the case I reported. I built this branch's behaviour locally and confirmed the visible-plus-minimized case now works.

But it doesn't fully close #9991: it trades the original bug for a state where the hotkey does nothing at all.

The missing case

When every main window is minimized and the app is not hidden:

  • visibleTargets is empty, so the else if at L299 doesn't take.
  • The else at L301-L307 only considers dismissedWindowRestoreTargets, which is populated solely by titlebar dismiss and is normally empty.
  • So revealTargets == [], and reveal() hits its guard !windows.isEmpty at L378 and returns before activate() at L393.

Repro: minimize every cmux window, click into another app (don't Hide cmux), press the hotkey. Nothing happens — the app doesn't even come forward. Same dead end if you minimize your only window while cmux is still frontmost. Before this PR that state deminiaturized and activated.

The hotkey path is the only caller with no fallback: applicationShouldHandleReopen and showMainWindowFromMenuBar both fall through to ensureInitialMainWindowIfNeeded, which focuses a window and deminiaturizes it. toggleApplicationVisibility just does _ = showApplicationWindows(...).

Suggested fix

The hidden branch already has exactly the right last-resort at L297; it just needs to apply to the not-hidden branch too:

             dismissedWindowRestoreTargets.removeAll()
- revealTargets = dismissedTargets
+ revealTargets = dismissedTargets.isEmpty
+                ? allWindows.filter { dependencies.windowOperations.isMiniaturized($0) }
+ : dismissedTargets
         }

Preference order then reads the same in both branches — on-screen windows first, then dismissed, then minimized only when there is nothing else to show. Minimized windows stay in the Dock whenever anything else can be revealed, and the hotkey is never inert. (Worth pulling that filter into a small helper so the two branches don't duplicate the rule.)

The tell

testShowApplicationWindowsStillRestoresMiniaturizedWindowsWhenNoHiddenTargetsWereCaptured was exactly this scenario — one minimized window, isApplicationHidden: { false }, reason .globalHotkey, asserting deminiaturize + makeKey. This PR flips its fixture to isApplicationHidden: { true } and renames it. That retarget is the regression showing through at the test level: the old assertions describe the behaviour that is now lost.

With the fallback above, that test passes unmodified — which seems like the strongest signal that the fallback is the missing piece rather than the test being wrong.

Happy to send this as a PR against your branch if that's easier than patching it yourself.

Since this was closed, I've opened #18533 to carry the fix forward: #18533.

It's your approach — the visible && !miniaturized reveal set plus the minimized-windows-as-last-resort fallback you arrived at in e966954e9 — so both commits there carry your Co-authored-by. The only differences are that the duplicated last-resort filter is pulled into a miniaturizedTargetsOfLastResort helper, and the regression lives in MainWindowVisibilityLifecycleTests so testShowApplicationWindowsStillRestoresMiniaturizedWindowsWhenNoHiddenTargetsWereCaptured can stay on its original isApplicationHidden: { false } fixture.

Thanks for the original diagnosis and for taking the review feedback on board — that saved me the hard part. Happy to hand it back if you'd rather reopen this one instead.
