Closes the visual gap to tmux/zellij status-bar and tab theming, and makes the vertical workspace buttons configurable, building on #10383.

Status bar: status_bar.left_separator / right_separator draw powerline transitions between segments — separator foreground from the previous segment's background, background from the next (the zjstatus/tmux-powerline scheme, mirrored on the right side). status_bar.screens_style (block/pill/slant) wraps the active screen chip in Nerd Font cap glyphs.

Tabs: tabs.style (block/pill/slant) gives solid tab chips catppuccin-style caps; cap cells participate in layout, scrolling, and click hit rects, and replace the ▎ rail accent when active.

Sidebar (vertical workspace buttons):

  • Pinned view actions accept {"action": "new-workspace", "label": "new"} objects to rename buttons, and "command:<id>" entries that pin a user command from commands as a button (labels resolve to the command's display name).
  • sidebar.views[].actions_position: "top" mounts the buttons directly under the view header instead of the bottom edge.
  • sidebar.row_height: 1 drops the subtitle line for dense one-line rows; sidebar.row_gap: 0 removes the padding row between entries (hit rects follow).
  • sidebar.rail_glyph replaces or removes ("none") the active-row accent; sidebar.workspace_label templates rows with {index}/{name}; theme.sidebar_fg/sidebar_selected_fg recolor rows.

Implementation notes: user commands now resolve before sidebar views so buttons can reference them by id, while chord binding still happens after keys overrides; RailPalette stays Copy (the rail glyph is a single char), so rendering never borrows the config; rail::viewport_positioned generalizes the existing bottom-pinned footer.

Docs: docs/configuration.md rows for every key. Tests: chip style and separator parsing, sidebar action objects with labels/positions/command references (including unknown-command rejection), row metrics and template parsing; suite green (1501 tests), fmt and clippy clean, hosted verification passed on Linux and macOS.

Dogfooded in tmux on the hosted binary: powerline bar with paired-color separators and pill screen chip, pill and slant tab caps rendered per chip, dense one-line numbered sidebar with top-mounted new/tab buttons plus a user-command button, all combined with rounded borders and dim-inactive.

Summary by cubic

Adds powerline separators, chip-cap styles, configurable “+” buttons (with right‑click menus), and sidebar button/layout customization. Improves status‑bar draw performance and validates the sidebar rail glyph to a single‑width character.

  • Status bar: status_bar.left_separator/right_separator render powerline transitions; status_bar.screens_style adds block/pill/slant caps to the active screen chip; status_bar.screens_plus sets the “+” label, optional left‑click action (action or command:<id>), and optional right‑click menu. Right‑click menus dispatch via a new MenuAction::RunConfigured into the existing run_action_for_pane.
  • Tabs: tabs.style adds block/pill/slant caps; cap cells participate in layout/scrolling/hit‑rects and replace the active ▎ rail; tabs.plus customizes the tab “+” label/left‑click action and adds an optional right‑click menu.
  • Sidebar: sidebar.views[].actions now accept {"action":"...","label":"..."} to rename buttons and "command:<id>" to pin user commands; sidebar.views[].actions_position can be "top" or "bottom". sidebar.row_height (1–2), sidebar.row_gap (0–2), sidebar.workspace_label supports {index}/{name}, and new theme.sidebar_fg/theme.sidebar_selected_fg recolor rows. Migration: sidebar.rail_glyph must be exactly one single‑width character or "none" (invalid values are ignored).
  • Ordering and perf: user commands resolve before sidebar views and plus menus so command:<id> can bind; command chords still bind after keys. The status bar draws without per‑frame allocations; the default workspace label path borrows without allocation. Caps, separators, and configurable labels/menus affect layout, scrolling, and click targets. Docs updated in docs/configuration.md.

Written for commit 09ab74a. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added customizable sidebar row height, spacing, active-row glyphs, workspace labels, and action placement.
    • Added labeled sidebar actions, configurable action menus, plus-button actions, and pane-specific actions.
    • Added configurable tab and screen chip styles, plus-button labels, and status-bar separators.
    • Expanded sidebar, tab, screen, and workspace labeling and color customization.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the new configuration options.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved sidebar hit areas and rendering for variable-height rows and subtitles.

Plus buttons: tabs.plus and status_bar.screens_plus customize the two + buttons — label (any text), action (left-click override: any action name or command:<id>), and menu (a right-click context menu using the sidebar action grammar with per-entry labels). Menu entries dispatch through the new MenuAction::RunConfigured variant into the shared run_action_for_pane path, registered in the menu inventory as composite. Dogfooded in tmux: a + ▾ tab-bar button and ⊕ screen strip button rendered, right-click opened the configured three-entry menu, and clicking the user-command entry spawned its tab.

…omization

Status bar: status_bar.left_separator/right_separator draw powerline
transitions between segments (separator foreground from the previous
segment's background, background from the next), and
status_bar.screens_style wraps the active screen chip in pill or slant
caps. tabs.style gives solid tab chips the same pill/slant caps, cap

Sidebar: pinned view actions accept object entries with a label override
({action, label}), command:<id> entries that pin a user command as a
button, and actions_position: top mounts the buttons under the header.
sidebar.row_height 1 drops the subtitle line, sidebar.row_gap 0 removes

resolve before sidebar views so buttons can reference them; chords still
bind after keys overrides.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 20316

This PR adds configurable menus, workspace actions, and new sidebar/status-bar rendering, but current behavior can leave some sidebar rows unclickable, overwrite dense-row text, render incorrect separator colors, block valid menu actions, and weaken configuration validation. The PR is not merge-ready until these bounded correctness issues are fixed or explicitly accepted.

P2 Badge Honor top action placement in projection views

When actions_position: "top" is configured on a multi-level view such as workspaces → agents, the setting is resolved here but has no effect: draw_projection still calls the bottom-only rail::viewport in ui/sidebar.rs, while only the legacy one-level workspace renderer uses viewport_positioned. Consequently, the documented option silently renders projection actions at the bottom; pass the resolved position through the projection renderer as well.

P2 Badge Apply sidebar foreground overrides to the file view

With sidebar.view: "files", these new theme settings are ignored: draw_files in ui/sidebar.rs still constructs unselected rows from Style::default() and selected rows from chrome.sidebar_selected_fg, whereas only RailPalette reads theme.sidebar_fg and theme.sidebar_selected_fg. Users therefore see the documented sidebar foreground customization in workspace/machine rails but not in the built-in file sidebar; apply the overrides in draw_files too.

Greptile Summary

This PR adds configurable powerline/chip rendering, customizable plus-button actions and menus, and denser, themed sidebar rows. It also introduces per-view sidebar action placement, but the projection renderer still does not honor top placement.

  • Adds status-bar separators and tab/screen chip styles.
  • Adds configurable tab and screen plus buttons with command-backed actions and menus.
  • Adds sidebar labels, row geometry, colors, rail glyphs, and action positioning.

Confidence Score: 4/5

The PR is not yet safe to merge because multi-level and non-legacy sidebar views still ignore top action placement.

The projection renderer continues to call the viewport wrapper that hardcodes bottom placement, so the previously reported configuration failure remains reachable despite the workspace-specific fix.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Template expansion is safe but stylistically diverges from the file's own one-pass pattern.

workspace_button_label performs two sequential, non-overlapping .replace() calls for {index} and {name}. Because str::replace scans only the original haystack per call and {index} is substituted before {name}, a workspace name containing literal {index} text cannot be rescanned, so this is not currently exploitable. expand_status_tokens in this same file documents and implements an explicit single left-to-right pass specifically to prevent an inserted value from being rescanned by a later token. Reusing that pattern here would make the two implementations consistent and remove the need to reason case-by-case about replace-order safety if a third token is ever added.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Register hit rectangles for all configured entry rows.

RailMetrics::height can exceed two. rail::entry renders every configured row. Lines 281, 373, 662, and 694 register hit rectangles for only the first two rows. Clicks on later rows do not select the displayed machine, tab, or workspace.

Replace each pair of one-row hit rectangles with one rectangle whose height is metrics.height. Add a regression test with row_height: 3.

Also applies to: 373-376, 662-665, 694-697

Do not draw the drag marker over an entry when row_gap is zero.

The configuration accepts row_gap: 0. For a dense rail, marker_row resolves to an entry row. The ─ marker then overwrites the first workspace row or the preceding workspace subtitle.

Draw the marker only in a gap row. Use a non-destructive visual state when no gap exists.

P2 Badge Propagate the configured rail stride to interactions

When sidebar.row_height or sidebar.row_gap differs from the default, rendering adopts this computed stride but the interaction geometry does not: handle_scroll_with_admission still adjusts machine/workspace/tab offsets by 3, rail_page_size still divides by 3, and workspace_drop_target_at still assumes three-row entries. For example, with row_height: 2 and row_gap: 0, one wheel notch produces an odd offset, leaving a blank row because partially visible entries are rejected, while workspace drag targets no longer align with the rendered rows. Route these consumers through the configured RailMetrics as well.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

tabs.plus and status_bar.screens_plus customize the two + buttons: label
text, a left-click action override (any action name or command:<id>), and
a right-click context menu whose entries use the sidebar action grammar,
labels included. Menu entries dispatch through the new
MenuAction::RunConfigured variant, which routes into the shared
run_action_for_pane path, so user commands and every catalog action work
from a plus menu; the variant is registered in the menu inventory.

Bound tabs.plus.label before converting its display width to u16.

tabs.min_width and tab labels are bounded, but tabs.plus.label is an unrestricted String. A label wider than u16::MAX wraps at pane.rs:319, so layout and hit rectangles use an incorrect width at pane.rs:409-410. Reject or clamp the label by display width before conversion, and add a boundary test.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Add test coverage for the new configurable plus-button dispatch.

This change adds MenuAction::RunConfigured, plus_menu_items, and wires configured actions into Hit::NewTab, Hit::NewScreen, and their right-click menus. No test in this file exercises a configured tabs.plus.action or status_bar.screens_plus.action overriding the default new-tab or new-screen behavior, or a right-click menu populated from plus_menu_items. This surface lets users run arbitrary configured actions from a click that previously always created a tab or screen. Add at least one test that configures a plus-button action and asserts the click runs that action instead of the default, and one test that verifies the right-click menu lists the configured items.

Represent the RunConfigured route as a referenced action.

RunConfigured executes its embedded Action, but menu_action_metadata() uses a fixed route string and the schema accepts only strings. A later Action route change can therefore leave the checker and inventory stale while validation passes. Add a structured referenced-action route and resolve it through action_metadata() in cmux-tui/scripts/check-spec-inventory.py; update cmux-tui/spec/inventory.json and its schema accordingly.

P2 Badge Keep keyboard order aligned with top actions

When a one-level workspace view sets actions_position: "top", this changes only the rendered viewport: workspace_rail_targets() still orders every workspace and recoverable workspace before the actions. Consequently, keyboard navigation does not follow the visual order—Home selects the first workspace rather than the top action, and Down from the last workspace jumps upward to an action. Build the navigation target order from the configured position as well.

P2 Badge Apply workspace labels to every workspace renderer

With sidebar.workspace_label configured, only live rows in the legacy workspace renderer pass through workspace_button_label; recoverable workspace rows below them still render workspace.name, and multi-level projection views render row.name directly. This produces mixed labels in the same rail and makes the documented template ineffective for workspace nodes in projection views. Apply the template wherever a workspace resource row is rendered.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Fix menu_action_prepares_pty_release so it does not block session-independent configured actions.

activate_menu gates every MenuAction on menu_action_prepares_pty_release(action) before dispatch. That function returns true for every MenuAction::RunConfigured { .. }, because RunConfigured is not in its exclusion list.

action_prepares_pty_release(Action) excludes ShowShortcuts, RenameWorkspace, RenameScreen, RenameTab, NewWorkspace, NewPaneRight, ScrollUp, ScrollDown, BrowserEditUrl, and SendPrefix from needing prepare_pty_input_before_mutation(). run_action_for_pane_with_prefix uses that Action-level check, so these actions run fine from a keyboard shortcut even when session_available() is false.

A + button right-click menu item built by plus_menu_items wraps its configured Action in MenuAction::RunConfigured. Because menu_action_prepares_pty_release treats RunConfigured as always needing an active session, clicking a configured menu entry for one of the excluded actions (for example a ShowShortcuts or RenameWorkspace entry) fails with "No active session" and never reaches run_action_for_pane whenever session_available() is false, such as during a machine switch or reconnect. The same action bound to a keyboard shortcut still works in that state.

Left-click dispatch of tabs.plus.action and status_bar.screens_plus.action (Hit::NewTab, Hit::NewScreen) calls run_action_for_pane directly and is not affected; only the right-click menu path through activate_menu is broken.

Bound configured plus-menu entries.

raw.menu is an unbounded collection. This resolver scans every entry, and cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/app.rs, Lines 9599-9615, allocates one MenuItem per entry whenever the menu opens. Add a shared maximum before resolution and test truncation with a diagnostic.

As per coding guidelines, avoid repeated full scans over scalable collections and use explicit size bounds for UI action lists.

Do not count duplicate chord entries as distinct bindings.

bind_user_command_chord removes and re-adds an existing chord, then returns true. A repeated chord therefore increments bound without adding a binding. After seven distinct chords and one duplicate, the eight-entry limit rejects the next distinct chord. Track accepted chords per command before incrementing bound, and add a regression test.

increment bound only for newly added chords, not duplicates that are removed and
re-added. Preserve the MAX_USER_COMMAND_CHORDS limit for distinct bindings, and
add a regression test covering seven unique chords, a duplicate, and a
subsequent eighth unique chord.

…glyph

The status bar borrows its separators and scans the bounded segment
slices in place instead of cloning strings and collecting vectors on
every draw. Workspace row labels return a borrowed name under the
default template, allocating only when a custom template expands.
sidebar.rail_glyph now requires exactly one single-width character (or
none), matching the single cell the renderer reserves.
