Summary

  • preserve the cursor-aware provisional render edge while the keyboard dock animates
  • fold live presentation translation into the renderer before an interrupted A→B→A reversal
  • measure the visible clip edge during the transition so the dock seam remains meaningful

Verification

  • swift test --package-path Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileTerminalKit --filter TerminalLetterboxGeometryTests
  • existing testTerminalDockStaysUnifiedAcrossRapidKeyboardReversals and testTerminalDockStaysPinnedForInPlaceKeyboardControlReversals cover the recorded interaction
  • tagged cloud build 31775619139 succeeded

Summary by cubic

Eliminates a one-frame snap when rapidly reversing the iOS keyboard dock. Previously the terminal wrapper resumed from its live position while the clip/dock stayed at the old target, exposing a seam; now the renderer pins a cursor-aware edge and folds the live translation before animations are cleared.

  • Host pins the visible render edge by computing a provisional keyboardTargetRenderBottom via hostedKeyboardTransitionRenderBottom(...).
  • Rebase path folds the wrapper’s presentation translation into the renderer with foldHostedKeyboardPresentationTranslation(...), resets the wrapper transform, and lays out the clip before removing animations so dock/clip/render share one visible edge.
  • Gap diagnostics now use the clip layer’s presentation bottom (terminalViewportPresentationBottom), matching the user-visible terminal edge.
  • Adds experiments/keyboard-dock-repro, a minimal UIKit repro: launch normally for the fixed transactional path; pass --buggy to reproduce the snap. The fixed path animates the dock in the keyboard’s transaction using .beginFromCurrentState.
  • Verification: swift test --package-path Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileTerminalKit --filter TerminalLetterboxGeometryTests (tests include testTerminalDockStaysUnifiedAcrossRapidKeyboardReversals and testTerminalDockStaysPinnedForInPlaceKeyboardControlReversals).

Written for commit ccce0f4. Summary will update on new commits.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The iOS terminal host now tracks rendered terminal boundaries during keyboard transitions. Presentation rebasing folds wrapper translation into renderer geometry. A UIKit reproduction app demonstrates keyboard dock constraint reversals in normal and buggy modes.

Changes

Keyboard Transition Geometry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rendered keyboard boundary and transition finalization
Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileTerminal/Sources/CmuxMobileTerminal/GhosttySurfaceHostView.swift, Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileTerminal/Sources/CmuxMobileTerminal/GhosttySurfaceView.swift
The host derives keyboard translation from the rendered terminal bottom. GhosttySurfaceView computes provisional render-bottom geometry and receives the rendered boundary during transition finalization.
Presentation translation rebase and dock-gap measurement
Packages/iOS/CmuxMobileTerminal/Sources/CmuxMobileTerminal/GhosttySurfaceHostView.swift
Presentation rebasing folds live wrapper translation into lastRenderRect, synchronizes renderer geometry, resets the wrapper transform, and measures the dock gap from the presented clip boundary.

Keyboard Dock Reproduction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reproduction app flow
experiments/keyboard-dock-repro/Sources/*
The app creates the root view, presents terminal and composer views, toggles text input, and updates the composer constraint from keyboard frame changes. Buggy mode applies layout immediately. Normal mode synchronizes the layout animation with the keyboard.
Reproduction project support
experiments/keyboard-dock-repro/project.yml, experiments/keyboard-dock-repro/Info.plist, experiments/keyboard-dock-repro/README.md
The project configuration and metadata define the iOS target. The README documents project generation, simulator builds, and both launch modes.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ccce0

The PR fixes keyboard reversal rendering and adds a reproduction target, but the reproduction can position the composer incorrectly on devices with a bottom safe-area inset, making the dock-seam behavior inaccurate. This bounded correctness issue should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge; the localization follow-up is minor.

Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main ✅ Passed The complete PR diff changes only iOS terminal and keyboard-repro files; the rule-scoped browser automation files are unchanged and no added browser/WebKit automation code appears.
Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load ✅ Passed The PR diff adds keyboard geometry, Core Animation, and UIKit repro code only; no agent-history loader, file/JSON parsing, directory scan, or synchronous load appears on an interactive path.
Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness ✅ Passed The PR changes only transient UIKit/render geometry and a repro app; no fresh persistence, history, undo, or durable snapshot read is replaced by a cache.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Measure overlap from the safe-area dock edge.

Line 77 measures from view.bounds.maxY, but bottomConstraint is relative to view.safeAreaLayoutGuide.bottomAnchor. On devices with a bottom safe-area inset, this moves the composer above the keyboard by that inset. The reproduction then does not preserve the actual dock seam.

Proposed fix
- let overlap = max(0, view.bounds.maxY - keyboardFrame.minY)
+ let overlap = max(0, view.safeAreaLayoutGuide.layoutFrame.maxY - keyboardFrame.minY)
