Uploaded Excel and CSV files currently fall back to an unsupported-file screen, and spreadsheet cells lack the document interactions users expect. This change opens those uploads in the spreadsheet viewer, supports conversion to a collaborative Macro workbook while preserving the original, and adds cell comments, mentions, links, and context menus.

Changes

  • Strengthen XLSX and CSV import/export, including financial number formats, formulas, multiple sheets, styles, named ranges, merges, and workbook layout metadata. Add independent financial workbook fixtures and round-trip coverage.
  • Add row, column, and cell context menus with clipboard, formatting, sizing, visibility, and supported structural actions.
  • Support Macro mention pills through typing, pasted Macro links, and AI edits; reuse the existing link hover previews.
  • Reuse document discussion threads for cell/range comments, replies, live updates, and inbox navigation. Add cell markers, hover cards, and a toolbar Comment action. Keep the floating text-formatting toolbar above comment cards.
  • Keep the Files navigation panel open when opening spreadsheets, with the standard manual hide/show controls.
  • Extend shared workbook, AI tool, and Rust validation schemas for the preserved workbook metadata.

Validation

  • 507 frontend tests across 48 files passed.
  • 22 shared spreadsheet / AI worker tests passed.
  • All 22 Chromium spreadsheet browser tests passed, including local collaboration, financial XLSX import/edit/export with real workers, mention editing, and context menus.
  • 10 sync-service spreadsheet Rust tests passed.
  • Frontend TypeScript check and just check passed.
  • Manually checked Files sidebar persistence and hide/show, cell comments, and Bold/Highlight formatting in the floating comment composer. Browser comment drafts were discarded without posting.

Limits

  • Full documents Rust tests remain blocked by local SQLx/database compilation errors; the sync-service tests above passed. CI must verify the complete backend build.
  • Structural row/column insertion and deletion remain disabled for collaborative workbooks until they can safely coordinate concurrent/offline edits; local workbooks support them.
  • This is core workbook interoperability, not complete Excel feature parity (for example, SmartArt is outside scope).

Note

Medium Risk
Large surface area across grid editing, formula/calculation workers, and comment APIs; collaborative structural edits remain restricted but CSV/XLSX import and comment anchoring touch document metadata and user-generated content.

Overview
This PR turns uploaded .csv / .xlsx files into first-class spreadsheet experiences and layers collaboration-style editing on top of the grid.

Files & preview: When spreadsheet access is on, the code block for CSV files lazy-loads UploadedWorkbook instead of raw text. EntityDetail gains previewHeaderLeading so preview panels can customize the header, and spreadsheet is recognized as a detail block type.

Comments: Native spreadsheet blocks wrap the editor in SpreadsheetComments, wiring document discussion threads to sheet + cell ranges—sidebar list, URL deep links (comment_id), hover/pinned cell cards, markers, and toolbar/context-menu entry. Sidebar and floating composers stay independent.

Mentions & rich text cells: A SpreadsheetMentions adapter drives CellMentionEditor for @ mentions and link/email rendering in cells and the formula bar; FormulaInput switches between formula textarea and the mention editor when the value is not formula-first. Find/replace, trim, and CSV import treat mention pills as atomic via cellPlainText / cellTextParts.

Grid UX & structure: SpreadsheetGrid adds cell and row/column context menus (clipboard, fill, comment), hidden rows/columns, per-row heights, richer border styles, and comment hover/click without stealing selection. SpreadsheetHeaderMenu exposes insert/delete/hide/resize/sort (structure mutations gated for collaborative workbooks). Calculation/history gain change-axis handling and stricter undo when the workbook layout diverges after row/column moves.

Import/export: Safer CSV decode/export (csvCellValue, encodeCsv), decodeCsv for uploaded workbooks, extended calculation inputs (numberFormat, defined names metadata), and broad browser/e2e coverage for XLSX round-trip, mentions, and menus.

Walkthrough

This change expands spreadsheet support across the web app and spreadsheet package. It adds uploaded-workbook previews, comments, mentions, context menus, hidden-axis navigation, structural row and column editing, richer XLSX and CSV handling, workbook metadata, named-range calculation, and style preservation. It also updates routing, notifications, service validation, documentation, tests, and dependency metadata.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 6082f

Row deletion, named-range calculation, and XLSX export can produce incorrect or repair-required workbooks. These material spreadsheet workflows should be corrected before merge.

Files views skip spreadsheet viewer

High Severity

UploadedWorkbook is only mounted from the code and unknown Block components. Files/Drive still routes uploaded .xlsx through UnknownDetail and .csv through CodeDetail, which render UnknownContent and CodeContent. Opening those uploads from Files keeps the unsupported-file or text-editor screens this change set out to replace.

Inbox comments omit cell anchor

Medium Severity

Opening a comment from a comment_id link opens the sidebar and jumps the grid via navigate, but never calls selectAnchor. The composer stays on an empty anchor and labels itself Workbook comment, so a new thread is posted without spreadsheet range metadata unless the user clicks Use selection.

configuration otherwise.

In `@packages/spreadsheet/src/calculation.ts`:

Make the disabled value reactive.

item() resolves props.readonly, props.canFillDown, props.canFillRight, and props.canComment when the menu JSX is created. The grid can remain mounted while permissions, busy state, or selection changes. The existing items then keep stale disabled values, which can hide valid actions or show actions as enabled when they are no longer valid. The current grid guards still prevent readonly mutations.

Pass accessors and evaluate them through reactive MenuItem props.

@ironcalc/wasm 0.8.4 setUserInput leading apostrophe getFormattedCellValue

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In IronCalc, including @ironcalc/wasm version 0.8.4, the behavior for handling input with a leading apostrophe is designed to treat the cell value as literal text rather than a formula or number. This implementation aligns with standard spreadsheet software behavior where a leading single quote (') acts as a prefix to force text formatting. Specific relevant technical details: 1. User Input Handling: The setUserInput method is the standard API for simulating user typing into a spreadsheet cell [1]. Recent updates to the IronCalc engine (including those integrated by v0.8.4) explicitly include fixes to correctly handle quote prefixes [2]. 2. Leading Apostrophe: When a string starting with an apostrophe is passed to setUserInput, the engine interprets this as a directive to treat the remainder of the input as plain text. 3. Formatted Value: When you later retrieve the cell's content using getFormattedCellValue, the library returns the cell's value as a formatted string [1]. If the input was entered with a leading apostrophe, the leading apostrophe itself is typically consumed and not returned as part of the formatted cell value, as it is a formatting instruction rather than part of the stored data. If you encounter issues where the apostrophe is not being treated as expected or is being incorrectly parsed as part of a formula, ensure that your input string is being passed to setUserInput correctly and that your project is using a stable 0.8.x version, as recent maintenance has focused on refining string parsing and quote escaping (e.g., PR #645) [3].

Preserve existing CSV formula markers on import. The exporter writes '=1+1. csvCellValue adds another apostrophe during import, so the stored value becomes ''=1+1. The calculation path passes that value to setUserInput; IronCalc consumes only the first marker, so getFormattedCellValue returns '=1+1. The value remains formula-safe, but the CSV round trip adds an unwanted apostrophe.

Make csvCellValue leave an existing apostrophe before a formula-like value unchanged. Add a round-trip assertion that the rendered value remains =1+1 while the CSV output remains formula-safe.

Write definedNames before calcPr, not before </workbook>.

workbook.calcProperties.fullCalcOnLoad = true (Line 591) makes ExcelJS emit a <calcPr .../> element just before </workbook>. The replacement therefore inserts <definedNames> after <calcPr/>. The CT_Workbook sequence requires definedNames before calcPr, so Excel reports repairable content for every exported workbook that carries a defined name. The own-parser round trip in xlsx-financial.test.ts does not detect this, because decodeXlsx reads names position-independently.

Insert the block before <calcPr when that element exists.

Recompute the origin for each active sheet.

origin captures the hidden rows and columns of the initial sheet. When a new sheet has no saved selection, the sheet-change fallback reuses this stale position. The selection can land on a hidden cell or skip a visible A1.

Make origin an accessor and evaluate it when the sheet selection resets.

Handle column auto-fit separately from row auto-fit.

When axis is column, this branch deletes rowHeights[start..end]. It does not change the selected column widths. For example, fitting column C can reset row 3 and leave column C unchanged.

Call the column auto-fit implementation for columns. If column auto-fit is not supported, remove or disable that menu action.

-  if (options.enableDeleteHotkey !== false) {
-    registerHotkey({
-      hotkey: ['delete', 'backspace'],
+  registerHotkey({
+      hotkey:
+        options.enableDeleteHotkey === false
+          ? undefined
+          : ['delete', 'backspace'],
       hotkeyToken: TOKENS.entity.action.delete,
       // Existing command configuration remains unchanged.
-    }).withGroup(group);
-  }
+  }).withGroup(group);

Preserve the target sheet context when expanding a qualified name.

For example, if Inputs!LocalCell has the definition $A$1, this code replaces it with ($A$1). IronCalc then evaluates $A$1 on the formula's current sheet instead of Inputs.

Qualify references in the inserted definition against bounded[target].name, or evaluate the defined name through a mechanism that retains its original sheet scope.
