Summary

  • replace the PdfDocumentState signals / stores / derived buckets with named document-scoped authorities for the model, persistence, tabs, navigation, viewer runtime, definitions, outline, interaction, markup, and annotations
  • localize narrow search and comment-layout state, and expose comments as a direct subtree projection instead of mirrored context state
  • migrate every PDF consumer and delete the legacy state factory, dead outline reducer, and obsolete popup/state paths

The production diff removes 2,596 net lines while adding focused characterization and authority tests.

Verification

  • nix develop --command just check
  • nix develop --command bun run type-check
  • nix develop --command bun run test src/features/block-pdf (16 files, 58 tests)
  • git range-diff confirms the 16 commits are patch-identical after rebasing onto current origin/main
  • Vite served the app successfully at http://localhost:3005/app; the available browser session redirected to the unauthenticated welcome page, so a PDF interaction walkthrough was blocked by login

Note

High Risk
Large refactor of PDF viewer state, comments, highlights, persistence, and navigation touches core editing and annotation flows across many components.

Overview
Replaces the deleted PdfDocumentState signal/store/derived monolith with document-scoped authorities on usePdfDocument() (model, persistence, tabs, outline, definitions, markup, annotations, selection/share location) plus separate PdfViewerProvider (viewer pair, overlays, zoom/page, local search UI) and PdfCommentsProvider (active/selected thread, scroll suppression).

Consumers across the PDF block now call those APIs instead of pdf.state.*; TermDataStore and TOC reducers give way to pdf.definitions and pdf.outline. Definition/reference UI resolves sections at render time via sectionReferenceMap, and definition popup state moves under signal/definitionPopup.

Behavioral tweaks: comment gutter RightMarginLayout mounts per page from Document with keyed threads and page layout hooks; modification autosave tracks model revision; selection popup drops the AI explanation toolbar path; navigation/hydration flows through PdfDocumentBehavior with imperative go-to queued on viewer readiness.

Adds characterization tests for annotations authority, RightMarginLayout thread stability, and SimpleSearch scoping per document.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Improved PDF viewer handling for tabs, navigation, annotations, comments, markup, definitions, and viewer state.
    • Added more consistent comment placement and per-page comment layout behavior.
  • Changes
    • Definition and reference panels now display page-based information without section labels.
    • Search queries persist when reopening search in the same document.
    • PDF bookmarks and table-of-contents editing are no longer available.
    • AI completion, text-copy, and “edit in Markdown” actions were removed from PDF selection popups.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved isolation of document, viewer, annotation, and comment state.

Walkthrough

The PDF feature replaces one centralized state object with independent document primitives for viewer state, navigation, annotations, definitions, markup, tabs, persistence, and comments. Components and hooks now use these APIs. Definition and table-of-contents state is simplified. Annotation and comment mutations use command methods. New tests cover primitive isolation, viewer behavior, annotations, comments, tabs, search, and placeables. AI actions were removed from the PDF popup.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 21806

PDF edits or bookmarks can be lost, while navigation and annotation failures can disrupt normal document use. These issues should be fixed before merge.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Make the PayloadMode dispatch exhaustive.

The frontend convention requires ts-pattern for exhaustive switch logic. PageOverlay calls createPlaceable for every mode except NoMode, and beginPlacement accepts every PayloadType except NoMode. This switch handles only Thread, Signature, and FreeTextAnnotation; other modes reach Placeable mode not implemented.

Use match(pdf.markup.mode()) with explicit branches for every mode that can reach this handler and end with .exhaustive(). A newly added mode must then fail type checking instead of reaching the runtime fallback.

SolidJS Show callback child keyed non-keyed accessor @once JSX compiler annotation semantics

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In SolidJS, the Show component provides conditional rendering with specific semantics regarding its children and the keyed prop [1]. Keyed vs. Non-Keyed Semantics: 1. Non-Keyed (Default): When keyed is omitted or set to false, Show monitors the truthiness of the when prop [1]. If the value changes but remains truthy, the child block is not recreated; instead, existing DOM nodes and component references are reused, and reactive updates are propagated internally [1][2]. If a function is provided as a child, it receives an accessor (a function) that provides the current value, allowing you to react to its internal changes [1][3]. 2. Keyed (keyed={true}): When enabled, Show treats the when value as a key [1]. If the value changes, the children are completely destroyed and recreated [1][2]. If a function is provided as a child, it receives the value directly (not an accessor) [1]. 3. Callback Argument Heuristic: Solid distinguishes between "accessor" children and "callback" children based on the presence of an argument [3]. A function child with an argument is treated as a callback [3]. If you provide a function without an argument, Solid assumes it is a reactive getter/accessor, which can lead to unexpected re-computation if not handled carefully [3][4]. Compiler Annotation @once: The /@once/ annotation is a JSX compiler marker used to signal that an expression should be treated as static [5][6]. 1. Behavior: It tells the compiler to opt the marked expression out of reactive tracking [5][6]. Once evaluated, it will not update when its dependencies change [5]. 2. Usage: It is typically used for performance optimization in scenarios where a value is known to be stable or when you explicitly want to prevent unnecessary reactive wrapping [5][6]. 3. Status: As of Solid 2.0, this marker is no longer part of the public JSX model [7]. Developers are encouraged to use standard reactive patterns or, if strictly necessary for one-time reads, use the untrack utility from the SolidJS core package to explicitly manage tracking outside of JSX [7]. Well not anymore since I&`#39`;ll explain everything. Let&`#39`;s talk why you should care and how to use it properly. I first met with `keyed` when I wanted to use ` ` in a more convenient way. So typically one uses Show like this: ``` <Show when={currentUser()}> {children} </Show> ``` And indeed if that&`#39`;s all you need, you don&`#39`;t have to care. The problem is that, if you are using any static type checking like TypeScript, the `currentUser()` part can at least in theory return falsy value. So if you plan to use it inside ` `, you&`#39`;d have to check for truthiness all the time. ``` <Show when={currentUser()}> <> <span>{currentUser()?.name}</span> <span>{currentUser()?.age}</span> </> </Show> ``` Which is inefficient and tedious, but even worse it&`#39`;s logically unnecessary because you already know inside the ` ` that the `currentUser()` exists, otherwise it wouldn&`#39`;t get displayed. But since the type system doesn&`#39`;t have the guarantee that each call to `currentUser()` returns the same value, ie. it can be impure, it has to assume that subsequent calls to `currentUser()` can still return falsy value. And calling it inside ` ` JSX tag doesn&`#39`;t change that fact in any way, because ` {currentUser()?.name} ` is not scoped to ` `, but rather to the whole component. ## Enter the `keyed` attribute There is actually great solution and that&`#39`;s using so called type narrowing render function, which looks like this: ``` <Show when={currentUser()}> {user => <> <span>{user().name}</span> <span>{user().age}</span> </>} </Show> ``` It narrows the type of `user` to truthy value since it already knows it&`#39`;s truthy by showing Show&`#39`;s children. Perfect! But wait a second, how&`#39`;s this connected to the `keyed` attribute? Well before Solid 1.7.0, it wasn&`#39`;t possible to use this render function without using `keyed` as well. ``` <Show when={currentUser()} keyed> {user => <> <span>{user.name}</span> ... ``` This, and the fact the docs don&`#39`;t explain `keyed` led to developers thinking this attribute is just about being able to use the render function, but that&`#39`;s wrong! Starting with Solid 1.7.0 the render function can be used also without `keyed`, but what&`#39`;s its purpose then? ## Purpose of `keyed` If you have experience with React, `keyed` is somewhat similar to React `key`. React uses it to keep track of DOM elements so that it can efficiently reuse them instead of destroying and recreating. And so does Solid. If you don&`#39`;t use `keyed`, when you change `currentUser` to someone else, Solid expects the Show&`#39`;s content not to have radically changed and it reuses the already existing component references and their respective DOM nodes instead of destroying and recreating them, but it of course updates the content based on the changed reactive properties. However if you use `keyed` and the value in `when` attribute has changed, Solid will actually recreate the Show&`#39`;s children from scratch. You can see it in this example: Every time you click &`#39`;Change current user&`#39`;, currentUser&`#39`;s reference changes, which causes Show&`#39`;s children to be recreated and ` ` prints &`#39`;mounted&`#39`; to the console. Yeah that&`#39`;s tricky.. mostly that Show doesn&`#39`;t treat the callback without arguments as a callback but instead as passing an accessor as a child. There just isn&`#39`;t a good way to differentiate. In which case it is just passing the function through which isn&`#39`;t memoized or an actual signal itself. This means that in the fragment context it is re-running without guards.. which happens because it&`#39`;s nested as the Show is memoized but the value it returns is just a function that isn&`#39`;t, and in theory this could be true to n-depth. > > The handling is imperfect but also I&`#39`;d argue this usage is incorrect since your intention isn&`#39`;t to return a non-memoized child and rather have it work like a callback form. Technically the correct solve is to run the `children` helper perhaps but this may have other implications. Hmm... the conceptual problem is that callback without argument behaves differently. In a sense that the helper is too overloaded. It&`#39`;s possible control flow should be returning `children(() =>)` instead of `createMemo(() =>)`. Keep PDFPopup anchored to the current selection.

When selectionMenuLocation() changes to another truthy object on the same page, Solid 1.9.7 reuses the non-keyed outer Show child. /*@once*/ prevents anchorRef from updating, so PopupPositioner can position the popup against the previous selection. Remove /*@once*/ so the anchor follows selectionMenuLocation().element.

Clear only the text box that lost focus.

The placeable’s on:mousedown handler activates the target before the previous textarea receives blur. The previous textarea then calls clearActive(), which clears the target’s active state. The target can become inactive and read-only until the user clicks it again.

Use the existing conditional command:

Guard against a thread with no comments before reading comments[0].

applyDeletedComment keeps a thread when response.thread.deleted is false, and it filters the deleted comment out (Lines 182-194). If the deleted comment was the only comment, the thread stays in the resource with comments: []. The projection effect then re-runs, matches that thread by threadId (Line 62), and reads commentThread.comments[0].commentId. That read throws a TypeError inside the reactive effect, so highlight projection stops.

Skip or drop the thread when it has no comments.

Do not mark a failed save as successful.

When storageServiceClient.pdfSave rejects, runSave catches the error and resolves normally. The autosave effect in Document.tsx then runs setSavedRevision(revision) despite the failed save. That revision does not trigger another autosave until the model revision changes.

Return an explicit save outcome and update savedRevision only after a successful save. Bounded retry or backoff is not required to fix this failure; preserving the rejection or returning an explicit failure result is the necessary correction.

Consume pending parameters before navigation.

isViewerReady() subscribes this effect to rootViewArea. Each updateviewarea event reruns the effect. Because pendingParams remains set, the effect starts the same navigation again. scrollTo() can emit another updateviewarea, which can create a repeated navigation cycle.

Add a command that atomically reads and clears the pending parameters, or clear them before calling goToLinkLocationFromParams.

Preserve persisted bookmarks during autosave. getSaveModificationData sets bookmarks: [], and pdfSave sends it unchanged. The server stores this JSON in a new DocumentInstance; document loading selects the newest instance and returns its modification data. An unrelated PDF edit can therefore make existing bookmarks disappear after reload. Preserve bookmarks from the document model or server snapshot instead of sending an empty array.

Document no longer passes live modificationData into this load. If hydrateFromServer runs after the check but before the final write, server-saved placeables are overwritten. When that load was started without a snapshot, the follow-up save can persist the extracted annotations and drop existing markup.

Draft threads skip auto-scroll

Medium Severity

Draft comment threads no longer scroll into view. createPdfDraftThreadId now assigns string ids, but useScrollToActiveThreadEffect still only scrolls when activeThreadId is a number. Previously the shared -1 draft id was numeric and did scroll, so a newly opened composer can remain off-screen after layout.
