Behavior

Kimi-K3 models with AttnRes reserve one block-major prefill workspace during post-load processing. Every forward pass slices that retained allocation for the active token rows.

Technical reason

Allocating the maximum AttnRes residual tensor during a large prefill after explicit KV-cache allocation can require a late contiguous block and fragment memory needed by persistent runtime state. Early reservation fixes the workspace address and makes its memory cost visible before KV-cache initialization.

Compatibility

  • Models without AttnRes are unchanged.
  • The tensor dtype, layout, and active shape match the existing per-forward allocation.
  • The workspace is non-persistent and is not written to checkpoints.
  • The allocation size follows scheduler_config.max_num_batched_tokens.

Validation

  • ruff check and ruff format --check pass for the changed files.
  • Six Kimi Eagle3/AttnRes unit tests pass.
  • Tests verify storage reuse, active-row slicing, capacity growth, dtype, and early reservation.
  • Integrated runtime condition: official Kimi-K3 MXFP4 target, TP16/DCP16, 4102 maximum batched tokens, explicit 4096 maximum scheduled tokens, and 1.325 GB of KV memory per rank.
  • Integrated result: the model starts with 1,057,049 physical KV-cache tokens and completes 8k, 32k, and 64k prefill measurements.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance Improvements
    • Improved Kimi model attention-residual workspace management for faster, more consistent inference.
    • Reuses preallocated workspace during forward passes and adjusts capacity when needed.
    • Improved CUDA memory handling before workspace allocation.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Added coverage for workspace reuse, slicing, capacity growth, data types, and storage behavior.

Retain a block-major AttnRes workspace sized for the scheduler token limit during post-load processing. Prefill calls slice the retained allocation instead of requesting a late contiguous block after explicit KV cache allocation. Models without AttnRes are unchanged. Tests cover storage reuse, slicing, growth, and early reservation.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits within each organization.

For paid Pro and Pro+ reviews, CodeRabbit uses a developer's included PR review attempts over the past 7 days to set the current hourly allowance. At typical activity levels, the full plan allowance applies. Higher sustained activity can lower the allowance until earlier attempts leave the 7-day window.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Kimi K3 models now preallocate and retain attention-residual workspace after weight loading. Forward passes reuse workspace slices, while larger requests trigger replacement allocation. Tests cover capacity, dtype, device, storage reuse, and CUDA allocator ordering.

Declare the optional tensor type before registering the non-persistent buffer so static analysis can verify allocation, reuse, and logging operations. Buffer registration and runtime storage behavior are unchanged.

Add the required Google-style docstring sections. Both new functions accept parameters, and _get_attn_res_workspace returns a tensor. Document these interfaces with Args: and Returns: sections.

  • vllm/models/kimi_k3/nvidia/model.py#L1500-L1501: add Args: for hidden_states and Returns: for the active workspace view.
