Retain compiled program owners for prepared PCIe launchers, normalize RoCE one-shot dtypes, and distinguish plain Python launch closures from Triton launchers. Native allocator extension names include their source hash.

Add an optional PreparationSession(collective_barrier=...) callback before authorized collective priming. The callback runs on a daemon thread; B12X_COLLECTIVE_BARRIER_TIMEOUT sets a finite positive timeout (default 120 seconds). A timeout reports unknown arrivals honestly and blocks another preparation job until the callback drains. The default remains disabled.

Validation: 116 tests passed across session lifecycle, first-use compilation, and RoCE preparation compilation on SM120 with CUTLASS DSL 4.7.1. These cover ownership and host coordination; physical multi-rank communication was not exercised.

The preparation-session path (77351c1) resolves RoCE declarations
through _dtypes(), which normalizes caller strings like 'float16' to
torch.dtype objects, then compile_roce passes them straight into
get_launcher. get_launcher's signature is dtype_name: str and
_RoceOneshotLaunch rejects anything else against _DTYPE_PACK_ELEMS, so
every weights-stage RoCE preparation dies with "unsupported RoCE
one-shot dtype torch.float16" before the first collective. The old
runtime path converted objects to names via _DTYPE_NAMES in
roce_oneshot._launcher_key; the preparation path bypasses it.

Normalize torch.dtype objects to their names at get_launcher entry,
matching the conversion the runtime path already applies. Both call
forms now reach the kernel gate; string behavior is unchanged.
Reproduced and verified host-side: torch.float16 object clears the
dtype gate post-fix (raising only the orthogonal threads check), and
the string form is byte-identical in behavior. Pre-existing E501s and
stale PCIe comm tests are untouched by this change.
…alues

Eight PCIe compile surfaces return the plain launch closure over their
annotated native program without attaching the program identity:

  _dcp_a2a_cute: lse_reduce_scatter, all_gather_heads, all_gather_pair,
                 kimi_topk16
  _dcp_topk_cute: owner stage
  _hierarchical_cute: hierarchical launcher
  _island_rs_cute: island reduce-scatter launcher
  _vocab_argmax_cute: vocab argmax launcher

describe_compilation and every evict sweep call program_keys() over
those values; a plain function matches nothing, so any unit whose
CompileJob resolves one of these surfaces, or any evict_unretained pass
that reaches a cache holding one, dies with 'compile factory returned
an unannotated function'. On GB10 this surfaced mid norm.mhc racing
because the compile pool and eviction sweep span all registered caches,
not just the racing unit.

Wrap each closure with attach_programs(run, raw) so it carries its
program into retention and sweep keys. Additionally, program_keys now
treats plain functions as opaque retained values instead of raising:
a launcher closure produced outside a compile factory has no program
identity to lose, and eviction must never kill a live race. Factories
that return a carrierless closure still fail describe_compilation's
empty-carry guard, so the preparation contract is unchanged.

Verified host-side: plain function sweeps to (), wrapped closure
carries its ProgramKey, dict-of-annotated factories unchanged,
describe_compilation still rejects carrierless factories, exotic
unannotated objects still raise. Preparation host lane: 490 passed,
1 failed (test_device_reclaim selection-source assert) which fails
identically without this change.
compile_twoshot_surface resolves FP8 surfaces through
get_twoshot_launcher, which returned a bare closure, so
describe_compilation saw zero program carriers — same class as the RoCE
and PCIe one-shot gaps. The BF16 getters already attach.
A collective authorization is consumed in the round after the exchange,
and the local work before either rank launches (autotune races) is
unbounded, so the kernel-side spin window ended up covering round time
instead of launch jitter. Sessions now accept an optional
collective_barrier(key, ranks) hook; when a blocked CollectiveRequirement
is authorized, the job waits for every participant rank to enter before
resuming. Timeout budget defaults to 120s via
B12X_COLLECTIVE_BARRIER_TIMEOUT; timeouts raise CollectiveBarrierTimeout
carrying key, ranks, and arrived sets.
torch's cpp_extension staleness check is mtime-based and does not
survive a persisted TORCH_EXTENSIONS_DIR, so a changed _memory.cpp next
to an old cached .so loaded stale symbols (missing
release_graph_pool_cache). Key the extension name by the cpp content
hash so any source change gets a fresh build directory.
get_launcher accepts str or torch.dtype. The torch.dtype spelling went
through a bare dict lookup, so an unsupported dtype raised KeyError while
the string spelling raised the documented ValueError from
_RoceOneshotLaunch. Convert the lookup failure to the same ValueError.
Retain cross-rank collective priming and compiler program carriers while preserving master-scoped reclamation and RoCE shared-result ownership. Selected preparation, layout and RoCE tests pass (209 cases in the Kimi composition).

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change updates compiler-program discovery and selected launcher retention, adds collective-barrier coordination to preparation sessions, hashes preparation extension source into extension names, and extends RoCE launcher dtype handling.

Changes

Preparation and launch flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compiler identity and launcher retention
b12x/_lib/compile_plan.py, b12x/comm/pcie/*, tests/preparation/test_first_use_compile.py, .lil/changes/b12x-preparation-launch-ownership.json
program_keys returns an empty tuple for functions without program metadata. Selected PCIe launcher wrappers attach their compiled programs. Related docstrings, tests, and a change record are updated.
Collective barrier coordination
b12x/preparation/session.py, b12x/preparation/__init__.py, tests/preparation/test_session.py, .lil/changes/b12x-collective-barrier-timeout.json
Preparation sessions accept an optional collective-barrier callback. Matching authorization runs the callback on a daemon thread and waits up to the configured timeout. Callback failures close the active job, and a new job is blocked while the callback thread remains active. The timeout exception is exported.
RoCE dtype validation
b12x/comm/roce/_oneshot_cute.py, tests/comm/test_roce_preparation_compile.py
The one-shot launcher accepts supported torch.dtype values and maps them to internal dtype names. Unsupported Torch dtypes and dtype strings raise ValueError; tests cover both inputs.
Preparation extension naming
b12x/preparation/_memory.py
The preparation extension name includes a digest of its adjacent C++ source.

No actionable merge-blocking issue is established for this change. Normal checks and maintainer review can proceed; the reported tests do not qualify arbitrary RoCE hardware or process groups.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 138f4

The optional barrier preserves collective metadata and prevents another job in the same session while a timed-out callback remains active. No externally reachable authorization bypass is established. However, replacing or closing a session does not drain that callback, so safe recovery against a shared collective backend depends on the caller.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: A timed-out barrier callback can outlive job and session cleanup. The pending-event gate belongs only to its originating session, so recovery that creates another session against the same collective backend can overlap the old callback with new preparation. Backend-level draining or serialization is not established. Same-session repetition is contained and tested; the concern is replacement-session recovery and shared-backend failure containment.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Potential downstream exposure follows the collective participants and backend operated by the supplied callback, including resources captured by its closure. The inspected interface supplies neither prepared-resource handles nor new credentials. Tenant reachability and the maximum independently affected service or environment scope are unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The callback is an embedder extension point, not an independently established authorization boundary. Callability validation and matching collective metadata do not prove that a real barrier occurred. A no-op callable alone does not establish a vulnerability: an attacker-controlled path to supplying it, or a security guarantee delegated to it, has not been demonstrated.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The deadline bounds the foreground wait, not callback execution. Failure closes preparation resources, while the daemon callback may continue. The originating session prevents another job until completion, but session close has no callback cancellation or join operation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define callback draining and cancellation ownership across session replacement. If sessions share a collective backend, consider backend-scoped admission or attempt identities so a timed-out operation cannot overlap or satisfy a later attempt. Exercise replacement-session recovery against that contract.

Full details: Context-Independent Repository Prose

Explanation

The PR description contains development-history prose rather than a self-contained account of the resulting change. It says #384 was closed after a beta integration, compares master with #448, and describes merging the original head without conflicts or rewriting commits. Those details require repository history and do not state behavior, technical reason, compatibility impact, or validation, violating custom-check item 9. The merge commit subject, “Merge remote-tracking branch 'canonical/master' into review/kimi-preparation-publication,” also records branch history rather than the resulting behavior. The changed source docstrings and release records otherwise describe current behavior directly.

Resolution

Remove the PR description’s ancestry, prior-PR comparison, merge-process, and duplicate-work narrative. State the implemented launcher ownership and optional collective barrier behavior, compatibility, and validation as self-contained facts, with test conditions and results stated directly. Replace the merge commit subject with a behavior-focused subject, or omit that history-only message from the reviewed commit set.
