Description

This branch closes LS-1704's two remaining sub-issues — LS-1712 (editor/front-end styling parity) and LS-1713 (foundation exceptions documentation) — and, since verifying parity meant actually looking at the real templates against the Figma design for the first time, also carries a front-end fidelity pass on the header, footer, and trust bar template parts, plus a site-wide content-width fix.

Changes

  • LS-1712 — editor styling parity: verified typography, spacing, width, and core reusable styles between the front end and the block editor across all real templates and parts. Written up as .github/reports/2026-08-12-editor-styling-parity-verification.md

  • LS-1713 — foundation exceptions: documented every custom CSS exception still needed beyond native theme.json/block support, why each exists, and where it lives, as docs/foundation-exceptions.md

  • Site-wide content width: every template's outer <main> group, plus its direct content children, now correctly use align:"wide" instead of silently defaulting to the 800px contentSize column

  • parts/header.html: rebuilt to the actual design — one row (utility links, logo, search, "Dashboards" button) via a real core/columns layout, then the nav menu as its own row below, boxed in a top-and-bottom border

  • parts/footer.html: rebuilt as a core/columns layout (logo | nav links | FAIR badge), plus a bordered copyright row (copyright text | social links); the FAIR certification badge is now a real wp:image block instead of an empty, CSS-background-styled paragraph

  • parts/trust-bar.html: rebuilt as a core/columns block — the divider between items is each column's native border-left instead of custom CSS, and the "10 years of impact" item's numeral is now a real inline SVG icon (matching its four sibling icons) instead of styled text; wrapped in a contentSize:"1320px" constraint so the row no longer stretches unbounded on large screens

  • assets/css/template-parts.css: pared down to a single remaining exception (the header search-button border) — the trust-bar divider, vertical-centering helper, and numeral-sizing rules are all gone, superseded by native block attributes

Files Modified

Source files:

  • parts/header.html, parts/footer.html, parts/trust-bar.html — rebuilt
  • templates/home.html, archive.html, single.html, page.html, search.html, 404.html, front-page.html, index.html — align:"wide" content-width fix
  • assets/css/template-parts.css — pared down
  • functions.php — stylesheet cache-busting via filemtime() instead of the static theme version string
  • CHANGELOG.md — new [Unreleased] entries

New files:

  • docs/foundation-exceptions.md
  • .github/reports/2026-08-12-editor-styling-parity-verification.md

Key Improvements

  • ✅ Confirmed the enqueue_block_assets strategy from LS-1709–1711 holds up correctly against real templates — no editor-specific style adjustments were actually needed, only documentation
  • ✅ Header, footer, and trust bar now structurally match the Figma design rather than the earlier placeholder-era approximation
  • ✅ Content width bug fixed at its root cause once, across every template, rather than patched per-page
  • ✅ docs/foundation-exceptions.md gives future contributors a single place to check before reaching for custom CSS
  • ✅ Custom CSS footprint reduced to one rule, down from several — native block attributes cover the rest

Related Issues

Closes LS-1712 — align Spotlight editor styling with front-end foundations
Closes LS-1713 — document Spotlight foundation exceptions and controlled custom CSS

Part of LS-1704 — establish Spotlight theme.json foundations and design tokens (parent issue; both of its remaining sub-issues are closed by this PR)

Testing

  • npm run schema:validate passes
  • npm run theme:validate passes
  • Verified in the Site Editor and on the front end: header, footer, and trust bar match the design at both default and wide viewport widths; page content no longer clips to the narrow default column

Deployment Notes

  • No breaking changes — structural/styling revisions to existing template parts and templates, no new dependencies
  • No build step required — HTML/CSS/JSON only

Checklist

  • JSON schema validation passed
  • Theme consistency validation passed
  • No conflicts with base branch (develop)
  • Editor and front-end spot-check of header, footer, trust bar, and general page width across templates

The current changes can override user-selected navigation colors and may leave the footer certification badge pointing to a local development URL after deployment; accessibility metadata and footer semantics also remain incomplete. These bounded correctness and accessibility issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Pull request overview

This PR aligns editor and front-end styling foundations for the Spotlight block theme, documents the remaining non-theme.json styling exceptions, and widens the theme’s template/layout composition so real templates and key chrome (header/footer/trust bar) match the intended design more closely.

Changes:

  • Applies a site-wide content-width fix by moving templates and key child blocks to align:"wide", and sets align:"wide" on header/footer template-part invocations.
  • Rebuilds parts/header.html, parts/footer.html, and parts/trust-bar.html to better match the design using native block structures, while reducing assets/css/template-parts.css to a single remaining exception.
  • Adds/updates documentation and specs (foundation exceptions + OpenSpec specs/archive) and improves stylesheet cache-busting via filemtime().

Correct the related-post query contract.

Set query.excludeCurrent: true instead of query.exclude_current. Use the existing namespace:"advanced-query-loop" to identify this loop in a query_loop_block_query_vars callback, and constrain results to categories shared with the current post. A separate className is not required.

Reduce the selector specificity.

Render the certification image with a dynamic theme URL.

Reduce the selector specificity.

.wp-block-search is redundant because .wp-block-search__button already identifies the button sub-element. Keep the .site-header scope with a lower-specificity selector.

Render the certification image with a dynamic theme URL.

The src in parts/footer.html hard-codes the theme and content paths. Standard Image blocks do not support file:./... in src. Move this image to a PHP-rendered pattern or dynamic block and generate its URL with get_theme_file_uri( 'assets/logos/fair-logo.png' ).

Remove explore-topics-list from the shared sidebar contract.

This line says that sidebar-editorial contains Explore topics and is reused by both templates. The design contract keeps Explore topics in single.html; only the dashboard and newsletter modules are shared. Update this line so page.html does not receive the single-post-only module.

Proposed wording

WordPress block template part tagName wrapper render_block_core_template_part template-part documentation

💡 Result:

The tagName attribute in a WordPress core/template-part block controls the HTML tag used for the wrapper element that encases the template part's content when rendered on the frontend [1][2][3]. ### How it Works When WordPress renders a template part, the render_block_core_template_part function determines which HTML tag to use as the wrapper [4][5][6]. 1. If a tagName is provided in the block attributes (e.g., <!-- wp:template-part {"slug":"header","tagName":"header"} /-->), WordPress uses that value as the wrapper tag, provided it is a valid, escaped HTML tag [4][7][2]. 2. If tagName is empty or invalid, the system defaults to a div element, unless a specific tag is defined for that template part's area (e.g., a "header" area might default to <header>) [4][6][3]. 3. The function get_block_wrapper_attributes() is called to generate any necessary attributes (like classes) for this wrapper [4][5][6]. ### Server-Side Implementation The rendering process is handled by render_block_core_template_part, which performs the following logic [4][6]: * It identifies the area of the template part (e.g., header, footer) and looks up any associated default area tag [4][7]. * It filters the content (including shortcodes and block parsing) [4][5][7]. * It constructs the final HTML string by wrapping the processed content in the determined tag and applying the wrapper attributes [4][8]. ### Important Considerations * Dynamic Rendering: The Template Part block is a dynamic block [1]. It is rendered on the server, meaning it does not save its HTML in the post content; rather, it parses the template file and generates the markup at runtime [1][2]. * Limitations of block_template_part(): If you use the block_template_part() PHP function to output a template part in a traditional PHP theme, it does not honor the tagName attribute or other block-level attributes assigned to a core/template-part block; it simply outputs the content of the template part [9]. * Design Intent: The tagName wrapper is used to ensure blocks are properly aligned and handled by the editor, which is why it is difficult to remove the wrapper entirely [10]. Define one header landmark and a working skip link in both specifications.

parts/header.html emits <header>, and all eight templates invoke it with {"tagName":"header"}. WordPress therefore renders nested <header> elements. No template contains a skip link or a matching main target.

  • Require one semantic wrapper owner, a skip link, and a matching main-content target in the archived specification.
  • Mirror these requirements in openspec/specs/template-parts/spec.md.

WordPress core/categories block taxonomy attribute category tag post_tag documentation

💡 Result:

The WordPress core/categories block is a dynamic, server-rendered block used to display a list of terms from a specific taxonomy [1][2]. Attributes The block includes a taxonomy attribute, which determines the taxonomy from which terms are displayed [1]. Attribute Details: - Name: taxonomy [1] - Type: string [1] - Default: "category" [1] - Description: Defines the slug of the taxonomy to be listed (e.g., "category" or "post_tag") [1][2][3]. Functionality and Taxonomy Support While the default value is "category," the attribute can be set to "post_tag" or any other registered taxonomy slug to display those respective terms [1][3]. The block uses this attribute on the server side to fetch the appropriate terms using functions like wp_list_categories or wp_dropdown_categories [4]. Important Considerations: - Block Variations: WordPress provides block variations for this component, such as "Categories List" (defaulting to the 'category' taxonomy) and "Terms List" (which can be configured for other taxonomies like 'post_tag') [3]. - Post Terms Block: For displaying terms specifically associated with the current post within a Query Loop, WordPress also provides the Post Terms block (core/post-terms), which is specifically designed to handle taxonomy terms tied to post objects [5]. For developers, the block structure in post content stores the taxonomy selection in the block attributes, for example: [1][2]

Add a server-rendered tag filter to templates/home.html. The current core/categories block defaults to the category taxonomy, so it does not provide the required post_tag links. 🌐 Web query:

WordPress Advanced Query Loop plugin exclude_current query block option

💡 Result:

The "exclude current post" functionality in the WordPress Query Loop block is managed through the excludeCurrent attribute [1][2][3]. As of August 2026, this feature is tracked for native core implementation in WordPress 7.1 [4][5]. Historically and prior to its native core availability, this functionality has been commonly implemented via third-party plugins (such as "Query Loop Exclude Posts") or custom code [6][7][8]. Key aspects of the excludeCurrent option include: 1. Functionality: When enabled (set to true), it instructs the Query Loop block to automatically exclude the post currently being viewed from the query results [2][3]. This is primarily used for creating "related posts" sections on single-post templates without the current post appearing in its own list [3][7]. 2. Technical Implementation: The attribute excludeCurrent is stored within the query object of the Query Loop block [1][2]. It dynamically checks the current post ID based on the block context and modifies the query to exclude that ID [2][3]. 3. Current Status: While code references and Pull Requests exist for adding excludeCurrent natively to core (e.g., Gutenberg PR #64916) [2][3], as of mid-2026, it is associated with development milestones for WordPress 7.1 [4][5]. If you do not see this option natively in your version of WordPress, it is because your installation is not yet using a version that includes this native feature. 4. Workarounds: If you are on an older version of WordPress, you can achieve this by using a filter in your functions.php file: add_filter( 'query_loop_block_query_vars', function( $query_vars, $block) { // Replace 'Your-Block-Name' with the specific name assigned in the block's Advanced settings if needed if ( isset( $block->attributes['metadata']['name']) && $block->attributes['metadata']['name'] === 'Your-Block-Name') { $query_vars['postnot_in'] = array( get_the_ID); } return $query_vars; }, 10, 2); Note that using postnot_in can be performance-intensive on large sites [6]. Using a dedicated plugin or waiting for the native 7.1 implementation is generally recommended for site performance and ease of use [7][8].

Add category scoping to the related-posts query or revise the requirement.

templates/single.html defines a core/query with the advanced-query-loop namespace and exclude_current: true, but it returns plain latest posts and does not filter by categories shared with the current post. Align query.excludeCurrent with the serialized exclude_current option, or change the requirement to describe the current exclude-only behavior.

Replace placeholder social URLs before release.

All three social links use url":"#". They do not lead to the X, Facebook, or Bluesky profiles. Set each URL to the real profile destination. If a profile is not ready, remove that item instead of shipping a dead control.

Based on learnings: placeholder # links in parts/footer.html must be replaced with real destinations before release.

Use one semantic <footer> wrapper.

parts/footer.html declares a <footer>, and all footer template-part calls also use tagName:"footer". WordPress renders nested footer landmarks. Change the root group in parts/footer.html to a div, including its opening and closing tags. Removing tagName from callers is insufficient because the footer area defaults to a <footer> wrapper.

The collapsed search input (core/search, isSearchFieldHidden) had no
styling of its own and stayed in normal flex flow, so opening it pushed
the "Dashboards" button around and broke onto two lines.

Adds a header-search.css component styled after ati-theme-2026's
is-style-header-search: the input opens out of flow via position, sized
per breakpoint. Above 1000px it slides out to the left of the icon,
tiered narrower at each step to stay clear of the site logo as the
available gap shrinks. At 1000px and below that gap is too tight for a
usable inline input, so it instead drops open as a full-width bar below
the whole header (utility row + logo + nav), anchored to .site-header
so it clears both.
