Description

This branch implements PR 3 of the Spotlight pattern library (LS-1721 — trust, newsletter, and editorial-utility patterns), building the republish-notice and newsletter-signup/newsletter-signup-compact patterns, then wiring them into single.html, front-page.html, and sidebar-editorial.html. Along the way it also fixed a sitewide theme.json spacing-scale bug and two recurring block-validation/layout bugs that this PR's work exposed.

Changes

  • republish-notice: the in-article "Republish this article, for free" card, using the real CC Post Republisher plugin's expected button/modal markup (wrapped in wp:html, not a wp:cc/post-republisher block reference — that block's save() returns real content, and a self-closing reference stores none) so the site's existing modal JS actually works. Confirmed end-to-end via Playwright: click → modal opens → populates real license content → closes.
  • newsletter-signup / newsletter-signup-compact: front-page and sidebar size variants. The sidebar variant embeds the site's real Gravity Form (ID 1, "Sign up to get stories that matter in your inbox," already wired to Mailchimp) rather than static markup, restyled via CSS to match the design — the same "restyle the plugin's own markup" approach used for the Republish button. The front-page variant's 3-item "latest newsletters" list is static placeholder content for now; this site has real "Edition"/"Spotlight Edition" categories that could back a real query later, deferred pending Zared's feedback on whether it's needed.
  • Republish button root-cause chain: the button "doing nothing" traced to three stacked local-environment issues, not pattern code — Perfmatters serving the plugin's modal.js over an untrusted local HTTPS cert; Classic Editor forced as the site's default editor, silently triggering the plugin's own legacy fallback to auto-inject a second, differently-styled button into every post body; and the plugin's modal CSS only auto-enqueuing alongside a real registered block, which our wp:html-based button intentionally isn't. Fixed by deactivating both plugins locally and declaring the modal stylesheet as an explicit dependency.
  • Sitewide theme.json spacing bug: our custom spacing scale reuses slugs (20–80) that collide with WordPress core's own built-in default spacing scale; without defaultSpacingSizes:false, core's identically-slugged flat values were silently winning over our fluid clamp() ones everywhere a pattern used one of those sizes — not scoped to this PR's patterns. Fixed once in theme.json, then re-verified and corrected padding across republish-notice, newsletter-signup, all four custom button styles, trust-bar.html, and topic-band-compact.php (the front-page topic-band.php grid is flagged as likely affected too, but left unverified — see Deployment Notes).
  • Recurring "Block contains unexpected or invalid content" bug: a hand-typed border width+style+color+radius block-style attribute doesn't byte-match WordPress's own style-engine serialization (wrong property order, missing the auto-added has-border-color class) — found and fixed twice, in republish-notice.php and newsletter-signup.php, both times by moving the border into real CSS instead.
  • CSS Grid stretch + broken-image containment: story-card cards were stretching to match a taller row-mate (no block attribute exists for a grid item's own align-self), which cascaded into a card's aspect-ratio image rendering at the row's full height instead of its own ratio — inflating page height and, on /latest-news/, physically overlapping and blocking the pagination component from being clicked/hovered. Fixed with align-self: start plus overflow: hidden on the media container, the latter as a permanent defensive fix (a deleted/corrupted media file on staging or live would hit the exact same failure mode, not just local demo data).

Files Modified

Source files:

  • functions.php — republish/newsletter stylesheet enqueues, defensive render_block_cc/post-republisher filter
  • theme.json — defaultSpacingSizes:false
  • style.css — version bump (1.0.0 → 1.0.1)
  • styles/blocks/button/dashboard.json, secondary.json, republish-article.json, outline.json — padding corrected now that the spacing scale is trustworthy
  • assets/css/story-card.css — align-self: start (grid-stretch fix) and overflow: hidden (broken-image containment)
  • parts/trust-bar.html — padding/gap/divider-color corrected against a fresh Figma pull
  • patterns/topic-band-compact.php — tile padding corrected, redundant heading spacing removed
  • templates/single.html, front-page.html — placeholder markers replaced with real wp:pattern references
  • parts/sidebar-editorial.html — newsletter module replaced with a wp:pattern reference
  • .gitignore — ignore local Playwright MCP test artifacts
  • openspec/changes/spotlight-pattern-library/design.md, tasks.md — task completion notes and new Open Questions

New files:

  • patterns/republish-notice.php, newsletter-signup.php, newsletter-signup-compact.php
  • assets/css/republish-notice.css, newsletter-signup.css

Key Improvements

  • ✅ Republish button confirmed working end-to-end (open, populate, close) via live browser testing, not just visual inspection
  • ✅ Sidebar newsletter form is the real, Mailchimp-connected Gravity Form, not a static mockup
  • ✅ A sitewide spacing-scale bug affecting every pattern using spacing|20–spacing|80 is fixed at the root (theme.json), not patched per-pattern
  • ✅ The recurring hand-typed-border validation bug is now a documented, repeatable fix (moved to CSS) rather than a one-off
  • ✅ A defensive overflow: hidden on story-card media protects staging/live from the same broken-image layout bleed, not just local demo data
  • ✅ Duplicate Republish button (plugin auto-injection) fully understood and resolved — flagged to Zared given he'd previously asked to keep Classic Editor active

Related Issues

Closes LS-1721 — Trust, newsletter, and editorial-utility patterns

Part of LS-1706 — Spotlight pattern library (parent issue; PR 3 of 7)

Testing

  • npm run schema:validate passes
  • npm run theme:validate passes
  • composer run lint:php and composer run phpcs pass
  • openspec validate --strict spotlight-pattern-library passes
  • Verified in the Site Editor and on the front end via Playwright: Republish button end-to-end flow, newsletter forms on both front-page and sidebar placements, trust-bar and Explore-topics sidebar spacing, and the pagination overlap fix on /latest-news/

Deployment Notes

  • No breaking changes — new patterns, template wiring, and CSS/JSON fixes only
  • No build step required — HTML/CSS/JSON/PHP only
  • Local-environment changes made during testing, not part of this diff: Perfmatters and Classic Editor were deactivated on local dev (safe — caching/legacy-editor only, unrelated to staging/live which serve real trusted HTTPS certs); two demo posts' broken featured images were swapped to a working placeholder to stop them masking testing
  • Front-page topic-band.php grid likely has the same spacing-scale regression as trust-bar.html/topic-band-compact.php but is unverified — Figma access hit a hard View-seat rate limit mid-session — flagged in design.md for a follow-up PR rather than guessed at
  • Two items need Zared's input before further work: the front-page newsletter button's real destination, and whether the front-page newsletter list should become a dynamic query

Checklist

  • JSON schema validation passed
  • Theme consistency validation passed
  • PHP lint and PHPCS passed
  • OpenSpec strict validation passed
  • No conflicts with base branch (develop)
  • Editor and front-end spot-check of both new patterns, trust-bar, and Explore-topics sidebar spacing

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added newsletter signup sections for the homepage and editorial sidebar.
    • Added a newsletter subscription popup with improved form presentation.
    • Added republish notices with Creative Commons information and modal controls.
    • Integrated reusable content patterns into relevant page and post templates.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved story card image containment and prevented uneven card stretching.
    • Corrected topic-band and trust-bar spacing.
    • Prevented duplicate inline republish notices.
  • Style

    • Refined newsletter, republish, trust-bar, and button styling for improved consistency and responsiveness.

Investigated newsletter-signup (both size variants) and republish-notice
directly against Figma before building, confirming real integration
points instead of guessing: newsletter-signup-compact needs the site's
existing Gravity Form (ID 1), and the Republish button is powered by the
already-installed Creative Commons Post Republisher plugin, which opens
a modal rather than linking out or copying to clipboard.

Built patterns/republish-notice.php with the confirmed CC BY-ND 4.0 copy
and the plugin's own button/modal markup embedded as a wp:html block
(a self-closing block reference stored no content at all, breaking both
the front-end button and editor validation), reusing the theme's
existing republish-article button styling. Wired into single.html via
wp:pattern, replacing the placeholder.

Known issue, not yet resolved: the button renders but doesn't trigger
its modal on click — likely a script-loading issue on the environment,
to continue investigating Monday.
Republish-notice's button/modal now work end-to-end: enqueue the
plugin's modal CSS (only auto-loads with a real registered block,
which our wp:html markup intentionally isn't) and add a defensive
render filter against duplicate inline blocks. Also fix theme.json's
spacing sizes silently losing to WordPress core's identically-slugged
default scale (20-80) sitewide, via defaultSpacingSizes:false.
dashboard/secondary/republish-article used spacing|20/30 for
padding, tuned by eye against the broken flat scale from before
today's defaultSpacingSizes fix; now that spacing presets resolve
correctly, that rendered oversized. Standardized all four button
styles on spacing|10/20 (vertical/horizontal), matching the Figma
button spec (~8px/18px) that outline.json's vertical value already
matched by coincidence.
Front-page variant is static placeholder content pending Zared's
input on whether a dynamic query against real Edition categories is
needed. Sidebar variant embeds the real Gravity Form (already wired
to Mailchimp) restyled to match the design, same CSS-bridge approach
used for the CC Post Republisher plugin's button. Also fixes the same
border-block-attribute validation bug found this morning in
republish-notice.php, this time in newsletter-signup's outer card.
Replaces the whole placeholder heading+content group in each location
with a single wp:pattern reference, since both patterns already bake
in their own heading — same approach used for topic-band-compact.
Confirmed live: front-page shows the static issue list correctly,
sidebar renders the real Gravity Form with working styling.
trust-bar.html: outer bar padding was on all four sides instead of
vertical-only (spacing|30), items were missing vertical padding and
an explicit icon-to-text gap (spacing|10), and the heading/description
pairing relied on the sitewide default gap instead of Figma's
explicit spacing|5 — all confirmed against a fresh pull of the
"Stats Bar" component. Divider color corrected from neutral-100 to
base.

topic-band-compact.php: tile padding was spacing|40 instead of
Figma's spacing|20 (a pre-existing bug, not caused by today's fix,
just newly visible at its real size), and the heading had a redundant
padding-bottom double-counting the outer wrapper's own gap.
Sidebar variant's real Gravity Form embed is confirmed correct; the
front-page variant's button destination stays open pending Zared.
Marks tasks 3.8/3.9 done — PR 3 (LS-1721) is complete.

Set republish-notice's Inserter to false — single.html already
inserts it automatically, so leaving it inserter-visible let editors
drag a duplicate into post content and collide with the plugin's
fixed DOM IDs, the exact bug already fixed once. Corrected its
heading from h4 to h3, since it sits after arbitrary post content
with no guaranteed hierarchy above it. Clarified the pattern
description to reflect plain HTML rather than a real block instance.
Synced readme.txt's Stable tag with style.css's 1.0.1.

Looks good @josearmandoabreu

Content, popup theme, and trigger are authored in wp-admin per
Zared's direction to use Popup Maker natively rather than a theme
pattern; this covers everything the theme needs to support it —
restyled Gravity Form markup, AJAX submission so validation errors
render in place instead of closing the popup on a full-page postback,
a mobile width cap for Popup Maker's un-responsive fixed-width inline
style, and the button class wired to the popup's Click Open trigger.
