Summary

Carries #6672 by @luvs01 (its three commits are kept unchanged) and adds two follow-up commits that fix GUI defects found in maintainer review. A new push to the contributor branch would reset its readiness gate, so the fixes land here.

From #6672: Revealing a stored API key now requires a dashboard session issued through pairing or a trusted Tailscale identity. Automatic loopback sessions and requests carrying only the admin token are refused, and the requirement is checked again after the request body is read. Creating, rotating, and deleting keys, and ordinary sign-in, work as before. A refused reveal explains the requirement and, on an eligible standalone loopback origin, offers the existing pairing form.

Follow-up fixes:

  • Session changes clear revealed values. A revealed value is now cleared whenever the shared dashboard session token is cleared or replaced. Before, an expired paired session could be silently replaced through 401 recovery with an automatic loopback session, and the revealed plaintext stayed on screen. gui/src/api.ts now emits opencodex:session-changed, which carries only the plane name.
  • Hiding the desktop window clears revealed values. The disclosure lifetime and completion checks use hostDocumentHidden() / onHostVisibilityChange(). Hiding the desktop window to the tray, where WebView2 still reports the document as visible, now clears displayed values and invalidates pending reveal and clipboard completions.
  • The key list stays correct after create or rotate. A successful create or rotation start always reconciles the key list, through the sequenced resource refresh. If the session or view changed mid-request, only the one-time value is dropped, and a notice explains it. If the server changed mid-request, the original server's resource is marked stale with the new invalidateClientResource, so it revalidates on its next activation. An older inventory response cannot overwrite a newer one, so it cannot bring back a committed or aborted rotation.
  • No guessed recovery URL, and translated guides now agree. The pairing form is still offered only on a same-origin standalone dashboard at a literal 127.0.0.1 or [::1] origin, which must match the server's configured bind. On localhost aliases or remote origins the dashboard cannot learn the bind, so it shows the generic denial without suggesting a URL. The English and Korean guides explain how to pick the right literal address. A localhost-configured server has no eligible local pairing origin. The ja/ru/zh-cn/fr/tr/zh-tw guides now document the stored-key reveal rules.

One new string, api.key.mutationHidden, is translated in all 11 locales.

Supersedes #6672.

Verification

  • Independent reviews: server authorization review APPROVE at 56bd0147. The GUI review requested the four fixes above. A review of 7a0f0d1d found a stale-inventory ordering race, fixed in 98dacd48. 98dacd48 was approved. Codex (P2, guessed loopback URL) and CodeRabbit (translated guides) findings are fixed in c03a0ddc. The final-head review at c03a0ddcf502b9a0f89d463338a23df051369bcd is APPROVE.
  • GUI: bun test --isolate tests/apikeys-*.test.tsx tests/i18n-locales.test.ts tests/locale-parity.test.ts: 115 pass / 0 fail. tests/client-resource-revalidate.test.tsx tests/client-resource-poll.test.tsx: 25 pass / 0 fail. tests/api-auth-memory.test.ts tests/api-auth-deadline.test.ts tests/host-visibility.test.ts: 29 pass / 0 fail. bun x tsc --noEmit -p ., bun run lint, bun run lint:i18n, and bun run build pass.
  • Root: bun run typecheck passes. bun test --isolate tests/server/api-keys-routes.test.ts tests/gui/gui-pair-http.test.ts passes, as do tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts and tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts. bun run structure:check and bun run privacy:scan pass.
  • The new regression tests failed on the pre-fix code: 19 failures at 56bd0147, all passing now. The deferred-response tests cover start → commit/abort → newer inventory → delayed older inventory, for both rotation and create.
  • A local merge of the PR head with dev was checked with typecheck, the focused tests, and the layout/ratchet/structure checks. It merges cleanly with the current dev.
  • docs-site build: 561 pages, pass. The full local suite was not run; hosted CI covers it. The cross-platform matrix will run once on the final integrated dev tip.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Stored API keys can be revealed only in a current dashboard session established through browser pairing or trusted Tailscale identity. Automatic local sessions and admin tokens cannot reveal keys.
    • On standalone dashboards opened from the server’s matching literal loopback address, denied reveal attempts offer browser pairing. Pairing does not reveal a key; select it again afterward.
  • Security & Reliability

    • Revealed and one-time key values, along with copy feedback, are cleared when the session, dashboard view, or server changes. Late operations still refresh the key list but won’t restore hidden values.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change restricts stored API-key reveals to current pairing or trusted Tailscale identity sessions. The dashboard adds pairing guidance and clears or withholds displayed secrets when sessions, views, or targets change. Resource invalidation, tests, and documentation cover these behaviors.

gui/src/api.ts, gui/src/use-key-disclosure.ts, gui/src/client-resource.ts, gui/tests/client-resource-revalidate.test.tsx, gui/tests/apikeys-reveal-session.test.tsx
Session token changes emit shared-plane events. Disclosure state invalidates on session or visibility changes. Explicit resource invalidation triggers a fetch for active subscribers or revalidation on a later subscription.

The dashboard distinguishes denied reveals from other failures and offers local pairing only under the documented loopback conditions. Stale operations cannot restore displayed secrets or copy feedback. Create and rotation operations refresh key inventories while hiding one-time values when disclosure state changes. Translations and documentation describe the restrictions and clearing behavior.

A revealed API key can remain visible and copyable on an idle dashboard after its pairing or trusted session expires. The exposure is bounded to that browser, but the disclosure should be cleared at expiry.

Keep generic reveal-denial guidance on localhost aliases because the dashboard
cannot establish the configured literal bind from its target or session origin.
Preserve literal same-origin pairing forms and remove the unused URL-hint string.

Document stored-key reveal authorization and disclosure lifetime in every
translated dashboard guide, including IPv4/IPv6 bind-specific pairing limits.

Reset revealed keys when the shared session TTL expires.

ApiKeysListPanel stores the plaintext in revealed and renders it while currentReveal(k) returns a value. The visible active state does not track session expiry. The server removes expired sessions only when a request is authorized, and the browser emits SESSION_UNAVAILABLE_EVENT only after a failed request.

Therefore, an idle visible dashboard can keep rendering the plaintext after the shared session expires. The copy button also remains available. Reset the disclosure when the session's actual expiresAt is reached. Dispatch the existing shared-session event or invoke invalidate("session") from the session layer, and reschedule the expiry when an authorized request renews the session. Do not use a fixed timer that ignores renewal.

Reopening to recompute the merge ref. The previous run merged against dev 1a8377d, which itself exceeded the layout.json file-size ratchet (2000 lines; fixed on current dev). That run also hit the #4956 multi-file spawn stall in ci-gui-typecheck-gate. The head is unchanged.

Deferred CodeRabbit's outside-diff minor on use-key-disclosure.ts, which asks that revealed keys be cleared exactly at shared-session TTL expiry. The GUI session state has no expiresAt today; the server keeps it in src/server/gui-session.ts. Doing this needs a new server→client expiry contract plus renewal rescheduling, which is outside this carry. With this PR, the first authorized-plane request after expiry clears displayed values through the new session-changed/unavailable events. The residual case is an idle, visible panel that keeps showing a value the operator was already authorized to see. A follow-up can add an explicit expiry contract.

Merge b1e1735 additively after the specified dev c0f8165. The four newer upstream commits are 18a8cda (lidge-jun#6731), 13348ce (lidge-jun#6729), 8d30945 (lidge-jun#6713) and b1e1735 (lidge-jun#6732); their history is preserved unchanged.

The only content conflict is src/combos/jev.ts, where lidge-jun#6731 edited the endpoint resolver that the P0 exchange extraction moved to src/combos/jev-service-exchange.ts. This merge keeps the P0 side of jev.ts byte for byte. The exchange resolver still applies the pre-lidge-jun#6731 trailing-slash normalization after this commit; carrying the shared endpoint authority into it is a separate follow-up commit.
