fix(service): write-probe bundled Bun before baking it into durable launchers - #6695

…aunchers Windows app-sandbox/WDAC policies can deny profile writes to executables under sandbox-tagged trees: identical bun binary bytes pass from one path and get EPERM from another (observed: the service wrapper crash-looping on mkdir of its ownership lease since the policy began tagging the checkout). cliEntry() (Task Scheduler wrapper, Codex autostart shim) now write-probes the bundled binary against the opencodex config dir before baking it, and falls back to a demonstrably-writable runtime (current runtime, PATH bun, npm/official install locations) when the probe fails. Off Windows and for non-bundled provenance the behavior is unchanged.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughOn Windows, the new runtime selector probes whether a bundled Bun binary can write to the configuration directory. If it cannot, the selector checks alternate candidates. Both CLI entry points now use the resolved runtime. ChangesBun runtime selection

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to On a fresh Windows profile, the new check may fail to detect a blocked bundled Bun and may slow shim installation with extra probe processes. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
The probe reports "denied" when targetDir does not exist yet.
- Line 210 calls
mkdirSync(probe)withoutrecursive. - Both callers pass
getConfigDir()(src/service/state.tsLine 60,src/codex/shim.tsLine 116).getConfigDir()only computes~/.opencodexorOPENCODEX_HOME. It does not create the directory. - On a first install, the parent directory is missing.
mkdirSyncthen throwsENOENT, the child exits 1, andgrantedbecomesfalse.
What happens next:
sandboxAwareBunRuntimetreats the bundled binary as sandbox-blocked, although nothing denied the write.- It then probes every candidate synchronously:
process.execPath, eachwhere.exehit, theAPPDATAnpm path, and~/.bun. Each probe runs a child process with a timeout of up to 20 seconds. - Every candidate fails for the same
ENOENTreason, so the function returns the bundled runtime anyway. - As a result, the probe cannot detect a real sandbox block on a fresh profile, which is the state where the service gets installed. Every
ocxservice install or shim build also pays for N extra spawned processes.
Fix: probe a directory that exists. One option is to create targetDir from the parent process first. The other is to have the child use mkdirSync(probe, { recursive: true }) and then remove only the leaf it created. Path-dependent policies apply to the child's writes anywhere in the profile, so probing the nearest existing ancestor also works.
Proposed fix
- if (isRealBunBinary(bunPath)) {
+ if (isRealBunBinary(bunPath)) {
+ try { mkdirSync(targetDir, { recursive: true }); } catch { /* the child probe will report it */ }
const probe = join(targetDir, `.ocx-bun-write-probe-${process.pid}-${Date.now().toString(36)}`);Add mkdirSync to the node:fs import on Line 15.

Maintainer review (compat sweep, gpt-6.1-sol adversarial review, not a merge decision). When the bundled-Bun write probe fails, This is held for explicit security review and a trusted-candidate policy decision. Deterministic denial/fallback tests (exhausted candidates, preserved explicit runtime selection) would be needed either way. |

Held for now: automatic discovery and persistence of a runtime from PATH or install locations changes the runtime trust contract. A selected-runtime preflight that refuses with guidance (no alternate discovery) would be acceptable. |
…s launchers (replaces #6695) (#6812) * fix(service): preflight the selected Bun before baking it into Windows launchers Under a Windows application-control policy the same Bun bytes can write the profile from one path and get EPERM from another. A durable launcher that bakes a denied path crash-loops. Before a Windows service install, repair, or Codex shim install/refresh changes anything, run the already selected runtime itself to create and remove a probe entry in the config directory. On failure refuse with OCX_RUNTIME_PREFLIGHT_FAILED and guidance (reinstall through a permitted npm global install, or select a trusted Bun with OPENCODEX_BUN_PATH). No alternate runtime is discovered or persisted. An orchestrated install admits the runtime once before the existing service is stopped and passes that frozen selection to rendering and the install record. Direct installer calls keep their own admission. The preflight never deletes the config root. Shim auto-restore defers with guidance and startup continues. Other platforms are untouched. Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com> * fix(service): explain the probe child's deliberate catch blocks Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com> * test(service): allow the preflight's empty config root during fresh scheduler staging On Windows the runtime preflight runs before staging and may create the absent config root. It never deletes it and leaves it empty, so ownership initialization still claims it; assert emptiness instead of absence. Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com> * fix(service): claim fresh scheduler ownership before runtime preflight Admit the frozen runtime after registration and ownership initialization, before preparation, so fresh installs clear cached ownership refusals and denied probes roll back the new registration. Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com> * docs(service): document the fresh scheduler preflight order and the published package name A first-time scheduler install registers and claims the config root before the runtime check, and a refusal rolls back that registration. The reinstall guidance now names the published @bitkyc08/opencodex package. Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com> * test(service): cover Desktop refusal before runtime admission Keep repair admission after ownership and auth checks, preserve the admitted runtime through install and repair, and verify Desktop refusal never spawns the runtime probe. Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com> * docs(structure): fit the restart and runtime preflight contracts in the service doc budget Both the guarded update restart section (#6808) and the Windows selected-runtime preflight section landed in structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md. Keep both contracts and reflow them so the doc stays within the 600-line structure budget. Thank you @ismell0992-afk for this work. Following the maintainer direction (preflight the selected runtime and refuse with guidance, without searching for an alternate runtime), it was carried in #6812 and landed on |
