Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to Accepting larger filesystem identifiers removes a fail-closed check, but the comparison still uses numbers that can lose integer precision. A filesystem returning colliding rounded identifiers could allow a replaced directory to pass verification. This requires local directory-replacement capability and filesystem-specific conditions; no remote or cross-user privilege escalation was established. Existing ownership, configuration, deadline and lease controls remain intact. Retained concerns

Preserve exact file IDs above 2^53
When a filesystem reports IDs above Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER, distinct 64-bit IDs can map to the same JavaScript number—for example, Number(2n ** 60n) === Number(2n ** 60n + 1n). This check now admits those lossy values, and assertUpdateRestartHome later compares the same rounded numbers via JSON.stringify, so a config or Codex directory replaced during the handoff can be mistaken for the original and the child can start against an unexpected home. Preserve the IDs as bigint-derived decimal strings, or continue failing closed when exact identity cannot be represented; note that the production update path explicitly rejects Windows in src/cli/update-restart.ts, so relaxing the guard does not enable the claimed Windows restart path.

official Bun 1.4 node:fs statSync Stats ino default Number bigint option precision filesystem inode values
💡 Result:
In Bun 1.4, `node:fs` `statSync(path)` returns a `Stats` object by default, so `stats.ino` is a JavaScript `number`. Pass `{ bigint: true }` to get `BigIntStats` and `ino` as a `bigint`:
```js
import { statSync } from "node:fs";
const inoNumber = statSync(path).ino;
const inoBigInt = statSync(path, { bigint: true }).ino;
```
The Bun reference documents these overloads and types. ([bun.com](https://bun.com/reference/node/fs/statSync?utm_source=openai)) Bun 1.4’s release notes report expanded `node:fs` compatibility, but don’t specifically document inode precision or a `statSync` change; the default-versus-BigInt behavior above is what its API reference establishes. ([bun.com](https://bun.com/blog/bun-v1.4?utm_source=openai))
For inode values that may exceed JavaScript’s safe-integer range, use `{ bigint: true }` to avoid Number precision loss. The inode’s actual value and meaning remain filesystem-specific. ([nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/download/release/v17.0.1/docs/api/fs.html?utm_source=openai))

Linux kernel FUSE protocol inode number 64 bit ino attr official documentation
💡 Result:
Yes. In the Linux FUSE protocol, `struct fuse_attr` defines `ino` as `uint64_t`—a 64-bit unsigned integer. The protocol also uses a 64-bit `nodeid` in `struct fuse_entry_out`, labeled “Inode ID.” ([github.com](https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/include/uapi/linux/fuse.h?utm_source=openai))
That’s the field width in the protocol; it doesn’t guarantee every userspace interface or filesystem will preserve the full 64-bit value.

🌐 Web query:
Linux kernel FUSE implementation attr.ino inode i_ino fuse_iget stat st_ino source
💡 Result:
In the current Linux kernel source, the inode-number path is:
1. The FUSE protocol’s `struct fuse_attr` contains a 64-bit `ino`; lookup replies carry both `nodeid` and `attr`. ([github.com](https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/include/uapi/linux/fuse.h))
2. `fuse_lookup_name()` passes the reply’s `nodeid` and `attr` to `fuse_iget()`. ([github.com](https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/fs/fuse/dir.c))
3. When FUSE applies attributes, it sets **`inode->i_ino = fuse_squash_ino(attr->ino)`** and saves the original value in `fi->orig_ino`. ([github.com](https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/fs/fuse/inode.c))
So `attr.ino` supplies the VFS inode number, with `fuse_squash_ino()` potentially transforming it. It is distinct from FUSE’s `nodeid`, which the kernel stores as the FUSE inode’s internal identifier. `stat()`’s `st_ino` is therefore based on the VFS inode’s `i_ino`—not directly on `nodeid`. The sources here show the current `master` implementation; behavior in another kernel version may differ.

Linux kernel fs/fuse/inode.c fuse_squash_ino exact implementation ULONG_MAX 64-bit
💡 Result:
The implementation currently in `fs/fuse/inode.c` is:
```c
/*
* ino_t is 32-bits on 32-bit arch. We have to squash the 64-bit value
* so that it will fit.
*/
static ino_t fuse_squash_ino(u64 ino64)
{
ino_t ino = (ino_t) ino64;
if (sizeof(ino_t) < sizeof(u64))
ino ^= ino64 >> (sizeof(u64) - sizeof(ino_t)) * 8;
return ino;
}
```
On a **64-bit architecture**, `ino_t` and `u64` have the same size, so the condition is false. The function returns `(ino_t)ino64` unchanged—no squashing or `ULONG_MAX` check. On 32-bit architectures, it folds the upper 32 bits into the lower 32 bits with XOR. ([kernel.googlesource.com](https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux/%2B/8934827db5403eae57d4537114a9ff88b0a8460f/fs/fuse/inode.c))
The source says `ino_t` is 32-bit on 32-bit architectures; it does not mention `ULONG_MAX` explicitly. The function’s result is assigned to `inode->i_ino`. ([kernel.googlesource.com](https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux/%2B/8934827db5403eae57d4537114a9ff88b0a8460f/fs/fuse/inode.c))

Reject unsafe filesystem identities before starting the update child.
On 64-bit Linux FUSE, distinct inode values such as 2^53 and 2^53 + 1 can reach statSync, but Bun’s default API returns ino as a JavaScript number, which rounds both to 2^53. Number.isInteger accepts that value, so assertUpdateRestartHome() can compare equal identities after a same-path CODEX_HOME replacement. Because service-state records use OPENCODEX_HOME, replacing only CODEX_HOME can leave the ownership revision unchanged. The child can then pass its home check and start against the replacement directory.
Reject unsafe dev and ino values in physicalDirectory() before creating an update candidate, and retain safe-integer checks in the marker parser. The existing system-restart flow can then fall back before it stops the proxy.

Summary
On Windows, the update-restart child parser rejected the home identity marker at random with
update_restart_child_marker_invalid. The marker records the config and Codex home directories' identity (dev,ino), andparseMarkerrequired both to be JavaScript safe integers. NTFS file ids put the MFT sequence number in the high 16 bits, so a directory whose MFT record has been reused 32 or more times gets an id above 2^53. Whether the marker parsed therefore depended on which file id the directory happened to receive.The parser now accepts any finite integer for
devandino. The marker writer and the child read these values through the samestatSynccall, soassertUpdateRestartHomestill compares the token exactly, together with the canonical path and the ownership revision. NaN, infinities and fractions are still rejected, and the marker format is unchanged.Production impact is limited.
standalone()insrc/cli/update-restart.tsrefuses this restart path on Windows, so Windows users do not reach it today. The fix keeps the platform-neutral marker contract and its tests deterministic.This is the cause of the
