fix(claude): start the intercept pair on demand instead of asking for a restart - #6428
Conversation
… a restart Saving CLI or Desktop first-party settings refused with "restart needed" when the intercept pair had not bound at startup (Claude routing off, port busy, etc). The lifecycle now has a serialized ensure() that starts the pair in the running process through the same dispatch wrapper, records why a start failed (disabled, client role, ephemeral port, port in use, port mismatch) and is called by the first-party, Desktop picker and Claude routing toggles plus a new local-only POST /api/claude-intercept/start. The GUI shows the reason and a Start interception action; no copy asks for a restart.

Scoped CI reconciliation review at dbe86d0; not a complete 43-file UI/management/lifecycle approval.
Current-head run 36974599888 fails with concrete assertions, not only a generic timeout:
- Shard 2:
tests/cli/cli-headless-parity.test.ts:605reports/api/claude-intercept/startoutside the documented CLI resource coverage. - Shard 3: both reconciliation assertions in
tests/server/management-route-registry.test.tsfail forPOST /api/claude-intercept/start;src/server/management/route-registry.tshas no entry for the new ownerserver/management/claude-intercept-routes. - Shard 4: six cases in
tests/codex-integration/native-claude-code-toggle.test.tsfail, mostly receiving 403 before the expected toggle/persistence path. Some fixtures lack the newly required local-start context; the disable path also corresponds to the existing Codex comment about applying the start restriction only to enabling operations. These six fixture failures are not six independently proven production defects.
Please register the real route with accurate mutation/ownership/CLI-parity metadata and its supported CLI resource (or a narrowly justified existing exemption contract), update the corresponding documentation/surface where applicable, and reconcile the toggle tests with the intended authority contract. Retain the real disable/cleanup, idempotence, migration-sentinel and lock-refusal assertions; do not simply broaden trust or change all expected statuses to 403. Re-run these three regression files plus the on-demand lifecycle/authority tests on the corrected head, then require successful new associated CI.
I inspected the immutable new route, registry, toggle branch and failing hosted logs. The route is indeed missing from the registry, and the native Claude toggle applies interceptStartRefusal before deciding whether it is enabling. The previously posted port-mismatch and picker-retry findings remain separate review work. No local build, live intercept/account action, service restart or security scan was initiated for this triage.

Maintainer integration decision (dev, admin bypass per MAINTAINERS.md): merging at exact head 3aa4d42.
|
|
Follow-up on my scoped CI request: verified the final 3aa4d42 source and successful associated checks. The new route is declared in the registry, ocx claude intercept start and CLI coverage are present, and the native toggle retains its disable/idempotence/migration/lock paths without the unconditional start gate. I explicitly withdraw the substantive objections in my superseded dbe86d0 request. GitHub retained the historical CHANGES_REQUESTED review state after the post-merge dismissal attempt; I am not claiming that historical state was cleared. Owner integration 3d77e3d is in current dev ancestry. No local service/account operation was needed, and this is not a retrospective full 52-file UI/management approval. |
Summary
Saving Claude first-party settings refused with "Claude intercept is unavailable … restart needed" whenever the intercept pair (the CONNECT proxy on public port + 100, e.g. 10200, plus its TLS listener) had not bound at startup. That happens when Claude routing is off at launch, the port is busy, or the intercept is disabled. The GUI then told the user to restart OpenCodex. Restarting is not a fix the user should have to make.
The intercept now starts on demand in the running process:
ClaudeInterceptLifecyclegains a serializedensure()that starts the pair through the same dispatch wrapper startup uses, soownsListenerstill classifies the late listener as the intercept ingress. It joins a pending startup attempt, refuses afterstop(), and records why the last start failed:disabled,client_role,ephemeral_port,port_in_use(with the port),port_mismatchorfailed.PUT /api/claude-code {cliFirstParty}, the Desktop first-party and picker routes, and turning Claude routing on all call it. A newPOST /api/claude-intercept/start(src/server/management/claude-intercept-routes.ts) lets the GUI retry. All of these require local management authority (GUI session or admin token on the trusted loopback ingress). Hub-management and data-plane credentials are refused.interceptReason,interceptFailurePortandpickerReason.ClaudeInterceptStart) with a pending state. No intercept copy in any of the 10 locales asks for a restart any more. Claude Desktop's own "quit and reopen Desktop" copy is unchanged, because that one is correct.Verification
