Summary

Native-model discovery accepted JSON-escaped lone UTF-16 surrogates in model descriptions or nested metadata. Those rows could be persisted and published into a catalog that a strict downstream JSON consumer could not read.

After the existing bounded JSON round trip, reject a discovered row containing an unpaired surrogate in any string value or object key. Valid surrogate pairs remain accepted, and the existing row-count and byte-size limits still apply. This changes discovery-row validation only.

Source history includes 57703e2de4e51e44d36a13de954378cad3867a08. The local integration with dev at 0328373fb88fe0d019b29ae278e153d7fed4bcc7 preserved the three-file PR delta without changes to its behavior.

Verification

Current follow-up

Follow-up verification for c19b45df5f2c54665a445a4b2ddb6a5e51ee5ee4:

Extend the malformed roster-row regression with a lone-surrogate string nested in an array; validation and persistence assertions remain unchanged. No runtime change.

The complete synthetic catalog fixture passed 20 tests with 70 assertions.

Executed focused commands:

  • bun test ./tests/codex-integration/discovered-native-models.test.ts — passed.

Required typecheck, structure, privacy and file-size checks passed. Full local suite and unfiltered test:changed were not run; the documented focused/resource exception and remaining coverage limitations remain in effect. No blocked broad Kiro/SOCKS transport test or real-provider validation is claimed.

Cross-platform CI succeeded for this exact HEAD. Checkout 94d680e134365d0505efc885c6475836f1a6c3f0 and the PR HEAD share tree dce0509056deb9be116a37c7cd0867cced8119ad. Skipped jobs remain skipped.

Independent maintainer approval, explicit security review and any required sponsorship remain pending before merge.

Earlier integration evidence

Current upstream integration: a6114b62ed1b65dede802359ccd373d913979b24; published HEAD dda15f01f9aeae19e33e40c508b9cc0ef961cc9a. The source history through 66435b7aa757580c0c2bf7b03d31ca38bb12da2f is retained without rewriting authors or commits. The PR-specific change was checked again after this integration; typecheck, structure, privacy and file-size gates passed. Cross-platform CI succeeded for this exact HEAD; its checkout tree matches the published HEAD tree. Skipped jobs remain skipped.

Windows, Bun 1.4.0, isolated test temporary directory:

  • Earlier focused behavioral run: bun test tests/ci-workflows/file-size-ratchet.test.ts tests/codex-integration/discovered-native-models.test.ts — 29 passed, 0 failed, 153 assertions. Includes malformed descriptions, nested metadata keys, and valid surrogate pairs.
  • After integrating dev 0328373f: bun test tests/responses/responses-state-snapshot-select.test.ts --timeout 30000 — 4 passed, 0 failed, 7 assertions. This covers the newly integrated dev change; it is separate from the catalog regression evidence. The catalog files' added/deleted delta against dev was verified unchanged.
  • bun node_modules/typescript/bin/tsc --noEmit — passed after integration.
  • bun scripts/structure-ssot.ts — passed after integration.
  • bun scripts/privacy-scan.ts — passed after integration.
  • bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts — passed after integration.
  • git diff --cached --check 0328373fb88fe0d019b29ae278e153d7fed4bcc7 and git diff --check — passed.

The full local suite and test:changed were not run under the repository's focused-validation exception because of concurrent-worktree resource cost. Tests use synthetic roster data; no live discovery or credentials are claimed. The exact-HEAD CI result is recorded above.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • The catalog contract and regression tests are updated.
  • Independent review of untrusted catalog input handling is complete; any required security sponsorship remains pending.
  • Author validation is documented for c19b45df5f2c54665a445a4b2ddb6a5e51ee5ee4, known correct findings are addressed, and exact-HEAD CI is complete; author review readiness is confirmed.

Independent maintainer approval, explicit security review, and any required maintainer-sponsored decision remain pending before merge. These are separate from author review readiness; no approval or sponsorship is claimed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Roster discovery now rejects entries containing invalid Unicode characters, including in nested metadata, while continuing to accept valid Unicode and eligible existing entries.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Discovered native row validation now rejects rows with lone UTF-16 surrogates in string values or object keys. The validator checks nested arrays and objects after JSON cloning. Tests and catalog documentation reflect the rule.

Changes

Discovered Native Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and reject lone surrogates
src/codex/catalog/discovered-natives.ts, tests/codex-integration/discovered-native-models.test.ts, structure/catalog.md
The validator recursively checks strings, array elements, object keys, and nested values. It skips cloned rows that contain lone surrogates. Tests cover invalid surrogates and accept a valid surrogate pair. The catalog documentation describes the added rejection condition.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dda15

Current validation rejects lone surrogates in array-valued metadata, but a regression could admit malformed discovery rows without the focused test. This is a bounded test follow-up, so merging is reasonable.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to dda15

The change rejects malformed metadata without expanding access or privileges. The reviewed ingestion and recovery paths preserve existing safeguards.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected state is discovery metadata in the resolved configuration home and registries loading that state. Its effects extend beyond the fetching account's discovery projection, but publication does not itself grant account entitlement.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected roster fetch uses bearer credentials and an account header when available, rejects redirects, applies a timeout and bounded fatal-UTF-8 response reading, and requires usable parsed account-model evidence before recording discoveries. JSON-escaped lone surrogates receive the additional row-level check rather than weakening these controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Publication uses validated rows even when optional persistence fails. Reload also filters malformed persisted rows before publication, containing their effect on the inspected registry path despite possible retention of old bytes on disk.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add an array-element surrogate regression case.

parseAccountModels accepts string arrays in available_access_programs, and validateDiscoveredNativeRows retains that metadata. The current test does not place a lone surrogate inside an array. Removing array recursion would therefore pass the existing assertions.

Add this case to invalid:

Scoped correctness review at c19b45d: the surrogate check runs on the JSON-round-tripped, byte-bounded clone and traverses strings, object keys and array elements without changing the existing admission/store flow. My isolated Bun 1.4.0 run of tests/codex-integration/discovered-native-models.test.ts passed 20 tests / 71 assertions under CPUQuota=75%, MemoryMax=1536M and fresh temporary homes. The new nested-array case and valid-pair case execute; no new P0-P2 correctness finding in this three-file scope. Exact-head hosted CI 36842681829 is successful. This is not a repository security scan, comprehensive untrusted-input security signoff, live discovery proof, approval or sponsorship; the independent boundary-review condition in your description remains separate. No real catalog/configuration was modified.

  • PR fix(codex): reject unpaired surrogates in discovered model metadata #6368 by @luvs01: fix(codex): reject unpaired surrogates in discovered model metadata.
  • Exact head: c19b45df5f2c54665a445a4b2ddb6a5e51ee5ee4. PR base when CI ran: a6114b62ed. No file overlaps with later dev commits; git merge-tree against current dev is clean.
  • Hosted CI at this head: Cross-platform CI run 36842681829 passed on attempt 1 (pull_request). Jobs: test 1/4 through test 4/4, gates, structure gate, storage policy, docker smoke, api usage, keyring and npm-global legs, ci. React Doctor, hygiene and enforce-target also passed.
  • Local suites: not run, on explicit owner instruction. Hosted CI is the only execution evidence.
  • Review: @Ingwannu's scoped correctness review at this exact head found no P0–P2 issue. CodeRabbit's one trivial finding (add an array-element surrogate case) was fixed in c19b45df5f.
  • Security review (untrusted upstream input): an independent read-only review returned PASS bound to c19b45df5f2c54665a445a4b2ddb6a5e51ee5ee4. It checked that strings, keys, and array elements are covered, that the scan runs after the existing 256 KiB per-row bound and the 32-row cap, that deep nesting falls into the existing try and drops the row, that both the upstream and on-disk entry paths validate, and that no new logging is added.
  • Attribution: authored by @luvs01; not a carry.
